PS4 vs. Xbox One: A comparison gallery Posted: 19 Nov 2013 03:15 PM PST We couldn't resist putting the Xbox One and PS4 side by side for some photos. They've been running side by side in our offices for awhile now, so we thought we'd clean them up and pose them for you. Aside from the consoles, you'll see the system, their controllers, and some of their accessories posed in our gallery. If there are any other shots you'd like to see, let us know.
My first attempt at using Xbox One's voice commands Posted: 19 Nov 2013 03:10 PM PST After reading up a bit, I tried to see how I'd fare at controlling the Xbox One with voice commands. Above, you'll find a video of me trying out various system commands for about five minutes. As you'll see, it works fairly well, though it does get hung up in places. Now that I've spent more time using Xbox One's voice commands, I've learned that the system is teaching you more than you're teaching it. A voice training app helps out a bit, but what really bumps up the success rate is brushing up on the commands and when they can be used. Even with my improved success rate, there are still times when Xbox One refuses to act on a command. Of course, success rate is at 100 percent with the controller. Curiously, while playing back this video, Kinect heard and acted on some of the commands that it didn't the first time. Yeah, I don't know either.
Posted: 19 Nov 2013 03:00 PM PST Microsoft's Xbox 360 grew from being a simple game console to an all-in-one entertainment box over the last eight years or so, somehow squeezing in everything from multiplayer gaming to streaming movies and television. And now that they're on a roll, their new console, the Xbox One, embraces that complete system idea. They've packed the Xbox One with the technology and features needed to give us the games and other entertainment forms we'll seek out in this next generation, while adding in new control schemes and television support. In other words, they've built a big box for their big push into our living rooms.
Titanfall line of K'NEX toys is a thing that is happening Posted: 19 Nov 2013 02:00 PM PST Respawn Entertainment has teamed up with K'NEX to make Titanfall based toys. Toys we can expect include stuff based on the pilots, Titans, Spectres, and other key elements from the game. K'NEX teased that they'll have a sneak peek of the new toy line at the upcoming New York Toy Fair. And that's all the news on that ... LEGO > K'NEX
Walmart price matching Black Friday deals a week early Posted: 19 Nov 2013 01:00 PM PST Starting this Friday, Walmart will price match select competitor Black Friday deals, both in-store and online. Walmart is price matching specific items though, so it doesn't look like you can get anything you want that offers will be offering for dirt cheap. Walmart will be revealing all the deals starting Friday, but until then we do know a few specific discounts. Skylanders and Infinity Starter Packs will run for $37, plus various Xbox One and PlayStation 4 titles will be $10 off. Plus, there's a LG 50-inch HDTV going for $448. Check out our Black Friday page to see all the deals various stores will be offering for games and more.
| Renegade Kids' Mutant Mudds Deluxe hits Steam Thursday Posted: 19 Nov 2013 12:00 PM PST Funny how these things turn out. The long-awaited Steam version of Mutant Mudds Deluxe is actually releasing earlier than expected -- it's now ready to launch on November 21, 2013. The Wii U version's 20 new ghost levels are making it in, and the price has been set at $9.99. Glad to see this finally come through after being stuck in the Steam Greenlight process for over a year. There are still the pending PlayStation 3 / PS Vita versions coming later this year, and nothing against those (quite the opposite!), but Steam can be crucial for a game like this. | What if Doom were produced today? Posted: 19 Nov 2013 11:00 AM PST Doom was an immensely popular and genre-defining game back when it was released in 1993. It paved the way for many titles that followed and is still seen as one of the purest forms of first-person shooter gameplay. But things have clearly changed since then and it raises the question; what would the original Doom be like if it were made today? Well, one person has given us the answer by creating a video series showing what Doom would be like if it took advantage of many tropes and cliches that 'modern' FPS games employ. Watch as our hero has to take cover from enemy combatants as his health recharges, and look how skillful he is at breaching rooms and taking out enemies with precision using iron-sight aiming. But be careful! This incarnation of Doom has replaced the dark and gloomy horror atmosphere with inaccessible DLC specific areas. Ooohhh, so scary! But in all seriousness, this video series does an exceptional job of showing the disparity between the generations when it comes to game design. The only thing scary about it is seeing how accurate it is when it comes to modern shooter titles. |
| You can now play Assassin's Creed IV in 1080p on PS4 Posted: 19 Nov 2013 10:30 AM PST Ubisoft has given out notice that the promised Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag update for 1080p and better anti-aliasing is now available for download on PlayStation 4. It's still something of a shock to my system that such functionality has to come in the form of a title update, but when RAM requirements are being lowered through patches, anything's possible! | Amazon's opening up Xbox One pre-orders again tomorrow Posted: 19 Nov 2013 10:20 AM PST You've had a solid five months to make the arrangements to get an Xbox One. If you want the console immediately but have somehow neglected to pre-order it, Amazon's giving you one last shot. Take advantage of it. Starting tomorrow, November 20, at 8 a.m. EST/5 a.m. PST, Amazon's opening up a final round of pre-ordering for the Xbox One. Of course, quantities will probably be incredibly limited, so you'll want to make sure you're prompt. Afterward, you can do productive morning stuff, like try to fall back asleep with the excitement of your impending new console. |
Persona 4, Vol. 2 listed on voice actress' resume Posted: 19 Nov 2013 10:15 AM PST Atlus is planning to unveil something big this Sunday, but the cat might already be out of the bag. The online resume of Nanako Dojima voice actress Karen Strassman indicates a pair of titles called "Persona 4, Vol. 2" and "Golden 2 Persona 4" are in the works. Has Atlus' surprise reveal just been spoiled? I suppose we'll have to wait and see to find out for sure. Credits [Karen Strassman via Gematsu]
CoD: Ghosts PC patch reduces required RAM amount Posted: 19 Nov 2013 10:00 AM PST A new update for Call of Duty: Ghosts has been rolled out by Infinity Ward on PC, which intends to fix numerous stability issues and provide improved performance for Nvidia and AMD users. Ghosts' third update on PC has also added a '#CODeSports' option, which gives extra MLG support for the game through the inclusion of a Broadcast mode and the latest MLG rules which can be accessed in either online Private Matches or System Link. Arguably one of the most significant aspects of this update, however, has got to be the reduced RAM requirement. Previously, those attempting to launch Ghosts using a PC with anything less than 6GB of RAM were greeted with a 'blocking error' preventing them from playing, but this is no longer the case as the required amount has gone down to 4GB. Coming in at over 400MB, this update is quite a big one; be sure to check out the full patch notes posted up by Infinity Ward.
Live show: Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag Posted: 19 Nov 2013 09:30 AM PST [Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.] While I've missed out on every Assassin's Creed title except for the first one, and haven't really been bothered enough to go back and play them, there is no way that I'm missing out on Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. I guess that the lure of being a pirate, dominating the seas, exploring it's depths, and of course, spearing the holy hell out of some sharks is just too damn strong. Well, that and I hear this title is a great place to jump back in if you've been missing out. So grab your rum, and your favorite eye-patch, because we're on a quest for booty tonight on Mash Tactics. QotD: Tell me what you think a pirate would smell like in two words or less.
Black Mesa to be sold on Steam alongside free version Posted: 19 Nov 2013 09:00 AM PST Having already been long cleared for release on Steam through Greenlight, the team behind Black Mesa has now announced that Valve is allowing this Half-Life remake to be sold on the platform. That'll be happening soon in addition to a new free version, which will release shortly afterwards. "Our decision to sell Black Mesa rests on two key points," writes the team. "One is we believe we can make the game even better by having full access to the Source engine. This lets us tackle and fix limitations instead of working around them. The second is because frankly, our team could really use the financial help." This paid Steam version is said to include "features that the free version simply can not have" and there's plans to open source maps and some game assets. As for finishing Black Mesa, "Xen is still a ways off," according to the developers. "Over the past year, we have spent a HUGE amount of time porting the game to a new engine and fixing hundreds of bugs. The work to port to the new engine was not because of the decision to go retail, this was work that had to be done to get Black Mesa onto Steam and support our future plans." It's encouraging to see Valve give approval for this, and I like that there will be an easy way for players to compensate the Black Mesa team for its work. If you're worried about the cost, however, know that it's supposed to be "a relatively low price." HAPPY 15TH BIRTHDAY HALF-LIFE! We here at Black Mesa have some big news! [Black Mesa Source]
Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon gets a launch trailer Posted: 19 Nov 2013 08:30 AM PST In case it slipped under your radars, Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON'T KNOW! has a quick new launch trailer to remind you that this is a thing that came out today among all the awesome stuff launching these days. It's nothing we haven't seen up this point, but another montage of gameplay never hurt anyone. It shows off the Gauntlet-esque dungeon crawling, loot collecting, and co-op action. Unfortunately this one isn't out on your sweet new next-gen consoles (with the exception of the Wii U), but it's on just about everything else, including PC. I'm super psyched because my collector's edition for the 3DS came in the mail today, and I'm going to go play so much of it right this second. Who else is jumping on this?
Shadowrun Returns Berlin expansion dubbed 'Dragonfall' Posted: 19 Nov 2013 08:00 AM PST The massively successful Kickstarter for Shadowrun Returns reached lofty numbers, achieving a stretch goal which would add a second setting and campaign to the game as DLC, with the backers selecting Berlin as the locale. Today, Harebrained Schemes dropped a boatload of information on this Berlin expansion, titling it, Shadowrun: Dragonfall. Before I go any further, as a fan of the Shadowrun setting, that title gives me chills. You don't screw around with dragons. You just don't. It's just about the easiest way to guarantee a short and miserable life (or a very, very long and excruciating one, depending on the dragon you annoy). Along with the campaign comes new cyberware, new guns and new environments, all of which will be available in the game's editor to make new adventures with. The editor is also getting new features, including a scripting system to manage things such as lighting and dialog to offer greater flexibility. And, perhaps best of all, the expansion will feature a "save anywhere" system. It's one of the biggest issues with Shadowrun Returns, as some missions can be quite lengthy and having to retread progress due to an interruption could be annoying. This functionality will also be added to the original campaign. Shadowrun: Dragonfall is planned to release in January 2014. I want it yesterday.
| Investigate mysterious kidnappings in Witchmarsh Posted: 19 Nov 2013 07:45 AM PST I'll admit that I often look at a game's setting and world before I start caring about mechanics; if your game takes place in an interesting time period or uniquely fantastical world, then that's far more likely to get my interest. Witchmarsh is an action-RPG that takes place in Massachusetts in the 1920s; players will control a group of characters investigating a series of mysterious kidnappings. Witchmarsh is currently being worked on by just two developers but there's already a great-looking pixel art style in place, which you can see on the duo's development blog. Speaking to Indie Statik, lead writer and designer Lou Sgarbi said that the real-time combat system would be influenced by the likes of Diablo and Dark Souls and that the game will be structured like semi-linear RPGs such as Baldur's Gate. Sounds pretty good to me. Whilst there's no release date yet, Witchmarsh will launch a Kickstarter in January 2014, so keep your eyes peeled for that. | Metal Gear Ground Zeroes features custom soundtracks Posted: 19 Nov 2013 07:30 AM PST Hideo Kojima has tweeted a photo showing a menu option for Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes which allows players to import their own music and listen to it on an in-game Walkman. In the tweet, Kojima comments that he's playing along to the soundtrack for Pacific Rim. Back when I had a really healthy collection of digital music, custom soundtracks were my absolute favorite feature of the Xbox platform. I don't have much need of it now that I rely primarily on streaming services to enjoy music but I always appreciate the presence of the idea. |
Amazon selling PC components for up to 40 percent off Posted: 19 Nov 2013 07:15 AM PST For all the PC enthusiasts that are due for an upgrade, Amazon is having a sale of up to 40 percent off select DIY components. It's a pretty good mix of items that are on sale too: Corsair tower cases for $300; Intel i5 and i7 quad-core processors starting at $200; and even a 240GB Intel Solid State Drive for only $150. If accessories are more what you're looking for, there is a short list of headsets, keyboards, and gaming mice to choose from. You won't be find enough parts on sale to make the Large Pixel Collider, but the sale remains a short and sweet list of mid- to high-end PC components. You can click here to see the full catalog.
GaymerX organizers reveal Read Only Memories Posted: 19 Nov 2013 07:00 AM PST You say the term "adventure game" and you'll get my attention. Say the word "cyberpunk" and you'll really have my attention. Say "cyberpunk adventure game" and I'll be begging for more info. Read Only Memories is a new game from Midboss Games, a studio formed by the organizers of GaymerX. Their Kickstarter campaign is looking for just over $60,000 to develop the game for PC, Mac, iOS and Android devices, and Ouya -- indeed the latter is matching each dollar raised with a dollar of their own. Set in Neo San-Francisco (see, adding 'Neo' to your city makes it immediately cyberpunk; it's the law), you'll control a journalist that is given a ROM -- think smartphone, Google Glass, and R2-D2 all in one -- by a friend before they mysteriously disappear. Heavily influenced by the seminal Snatcher, Read Only Memories will offer branching paths, puzzles, and fleshed-out characters. Midboss game are keen to get community feedback to make the characters, both queer and non-queer, ring true. Considering I missed out on Snatcher when it came out, Read Only Memories looks like a chance to experience that type of 16-bit era adventure game.
Ridiculous Fishing headlines Humble Mobile Bundle 3 Posted: 19 Nov 2013 06:45 AM PST I previously said that I was a little disappointed with Humble Mobile Bundle 2, so my expectations for the future of Humble Bundle's Android spinoff have been tempered. Today, the Humble Mobile Bundle 3 was announced, and I am once again riding high on my new options for mobile gaming. We heard just two days ago that Ridiculous Fishing would be available on Android "sooner than you think," and now it is here as one of the "pay more than the average" titles in the bundle. Though it is probably the star of the show, its backup is looking pretty great too. Rymdkapsel and SpellTower both look great and are part of the standard bundle, along with EPOCH and Swordigo. Joining Ridiculous Fishing for those who pay more than the average is Kingdom Rush. Naturally, the bundle also includes soundtracks. Swordigo's and Rymdkapsel's soundtracks are available with the basic bundle, while Ridiculous Fishing's and Kingdom Rush's soundtracks can be downloaded by those who put up more money. And of course, while this bundle looks great now, it can only get better when the Humble people "surprise" us with more additions in a week.
Smash Bros. mod Project M 3.0 gets one heck of a trailer Posted: 19 Nov 2013 06:30 AM PST Project M is one of the most impressive mods I've ever seen and this trailer for the upcoming 3.0 release on December 9, 2013 serves as a terrific introduction. The talent and dedication of these people -- my goodness! It's simply remarkable. While the PMBR hasn't come out with the full list of additions, expect new characters like Mewtwo and Samus, the crazy-sounding Turbo mode, alternate costumes including Dr. Mario, and new/revised stages. That's to say nothing of the countless tweaks to gameplay. If this is all sounding new to you and you're more of a Super Smash Bros. Melee fan than Brawl, you've got some reading to do.
Kojima wants to play Knack with Mark Cerny Posted: 19 Nov 2013 06:15 AM PST To accompany a bunch of straight PS4 gameplay for Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, Hideo Kojima sat down with the PlayStation Blog to talk about things like the less linear nature of Ground Zeroes, where the, "the player will put a story together." It's sounding almost Hitman-esque. Kojima also explained why Metal Gear Solid V is two games, with Ground Zeroes acting as a prologue: "PS4 is launching now and it’s big. A lot of people have been asking for a new Metal Gear Solid experience, so we at least wanted to release a prologue so that people get to know what people will be, experience a chunk of the story." He also talked about his pride in Ground Zeroes lighting -- the searchlights, in particular. "Twenty six years ago, I wanted to originally put this in the game: moving through searchlights without being spotted." Oh, and he wants to play Knack with Mark Cerny. Me too, Kojima. Me too.
The Core! The beginning of the end, part 1 Posted: 19 Nov 2013 06:00 AM PST Yeehaw. If you remember back to last week you know that there's a new sheriff in town. And by new I mean old. Now it's time for our plucky band of losers to get promoted up into deputy status. That metaphor was fairly inaccurate. Oh well, some news happened today: Fallout 4 is probably definitely coming, indies are cool, and the Ouya still isn't dead. Want to join in on the madness? Check us out over on Dtoid.tv at 3pm PST!
F2P Dragon's Dogma Quest coming to Vita December 19 Posted: 19 Nov 2013 05:45 AM PST Dragon's Dogma Quest was originally announced as a Vita game. Perhaps it isn't surprising that the free-to-play, 2D, online-only RPG ended up coming to iOS (in Japan) much sooner. Still, a Vita version is still in the works. According to Siliconera, it is coming December 19, though a Western release hasn't been announced. Like Dragon's Dogma, Quest stars an unlucky son of a gun whose heart was stolen by a dragon. Let's call him "No Heart" Anthony. He proves that Dragonheart movie is a load and dragons won't give you their hearts, but would rather take yours. The 2D art is actually rather nice, but given the free-to-play model, who knows if this will be any good. Hopefully this is a stopgap between a next gen sequel to the surprisingly beloved game. Or maybe it's the future, given that Deep Down is also free-to-play. Dragon’s Dogma Quest Adventures To Vita On December 19 [Siliconera]
Sony expects to meet demand for PS4 through the holidays Posted: 19 Nov 2013 05:30 AM PST Speaking to Game Informer, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House commented on the supply of PlayStation 4 for the holiday season. The console is launching in 32 territories by the end of this year, but he's confident in the company's ability to meet demand. "[This is] the first platform launch that I've ever been involved with where we've had such a good production ramp up and a good sense of supply," he said. "I think that we will be in good supply in the countries that we've launched in. "We are ensuring that we have the broadest reach to ensure that people are satisfied, especially when they've been loyal to brand for so long," House continued. "On the other hand, we're not engendering frustration by having a shortage of supply. I think through the holiday season that we'll be in good supply. The sales target that I announced for the company is five million units sold by the end of our fiscal year. March 31, 2014." One million consoles units were sold within the first 24 hours of the PS4 being available in North America, for context. Something tells me that the markups on eBay and the like won't be as absurd as they were for the prior generation of consoles. Let's hope not. I'm having terrible flashbacks. Sony's Andrew House Expects 'Sufficient Supply' Of PlayStation 4 Through Holiday [Game Informer]
Fight for the survival of Rome in Ryse later this week Posted: 19 Nov 2013 05:15 AM PST There's no argument that Ryse: Son of Rome is pretty, and more evidence of that has been made available through the launch trailer released today. Visually, it's downright gorgeous, but doesn't look like it's particularly fun. Based on what Dale had to say in his most recent preview, the combat sounds unrelenting (normally a good thing) and stiff (less good). As a dude who likes the pace of a game to feel like it's accelerating, the methodical combat Ryse seems to feature is probably not going to be my bag. At least it isn't the total QTE-fest some of us feared and maybe we'll get surprised by the final review, but I'm not holding out hope.
Ueda feels 'terribly sorry' about Last Guardian delays Posted: 19 Nov 2013 05:00 AM PST The Last Guardian director Fumito Ueda issued an apology to fans over the long wait for Team Ico's eternally forthcoming effort. “Putting aside the short-term output, more than anything I feel terribly sorry that for various reasons I have kept my audience waiting for such a long time,” Ueda shared in the latest issue of Edge magazine. "I always want to create quickly, and I always want to increase the rate of production," he added. "In the case of The Last Guardian, my creative work was mostly finished a long time ago, but the details of when, where and how it will be completed are beyond my control." The Last Guardian has been hit with a number of delays since its reveal at E3 2009. ony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida asserts the game is currently undergoing a redesign and is cagey about when and for what platform the title will release. Ueda left Sony following the release of The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection in late 2011, but has continued development on The Last Guardian as a freelancer. Ueda also confirmed he's contributing to other projects, but those are all secret for now. Ueda ‘terribly sorry’ for The Last Guardian delay [Edge]
| League of Legends event breaks record with 32M viewers Posted: 19 Nov 2013 04:45 AM PST It was clear that the League of Legends Season 3 World Championship pulled in a huge crowd, but Riot Games has only now come out with its final numbers for the event. And they are as outlandish as you'd imagine. Possibly more so. 32 million people watched the World Championship, with the peak concurrent viewer count topping out at 8.5 million. During Season 2, those numbers were 8.2 million and 1.1 million, respectively. It's good to be Riot right now. What's next? World domination? | Dead Rising 3 zombies are like snowflakes Posted: 19 Nov 2013 04:30 AM PST Microsoft has released the launch trailer for Dead Rising 3, launching with the Xbox One console this week. Are there zombies? You bet there are. This is, right now, the only title the Xbox One has on offer that I feel a burning desire to play. I adore the Dead Rising series. Its endless supply of undead and ridiculous killing implements are a joy, and I appreciate the time-sensitive mission structure that forces players to prioritize activities and race from one objective to the next. That passion isn't enough to get me to actually buy the console. But I'm certain it'll be the among the first games I pick up when that day comes. |
How to unlock Super Mario 3D World's secret character Posted: 19 Nov 2013 04:05 AM PST Super Mario 3D World has a secret playable fifth character, and it's not unlocked through normal means. Watch the above video to find out who it is, and how to go about obtaining the secret. Be warned -- the video spoils the new character after the 1:00 mark with some gameplay. For everything else, I have a few tips below that should help you out come launch day.
Posted: 19 Nov 2013 04:00 AM PST Mario and I go way back. Although I had dabbled in a few Atari games when I was younger, Super Mario Bros. for the NES was my first real game that I sat down and played from start to finish. Since then, I've collected and played every main series Mario game, adding a steady stable of all time favorites to my list. Why am I telling you all this, you may ask? Because I want you to know that I have a basis for comparison for the newly released Super Mario 3D World for the Wii U -- so when I say it's one of the greatest Mario games ever made, I mean it. It's one of the greatest Mario games ever made.
| UK deal: Register a 3DS and game for free Mario 3D Land Posted: 19 Nov 2013 03:45 AM PST Nintendo has a nice deal this holiday season for gamers in the United Kingdom. Register a 3DS or 3DS XL and a participating game between November 27 - January 13, and you'll receive a free copy of Super Mario 3D Land via eShop download. Given the sheer quality of the applicable games, that shouldn't be too difficult to manage:
Super Mario 3D Land is a must-own for the system and, in my humble opinion, one of the first titles new 3DS owners should try out. That said, almost everything on this list is worth grabbing as well. |
Microsoft shows off Xbox One's recording and sharing Posted: 19 Nov 2013 03:30 AM PST Major Nelson, the poster child for the Xbox, posted a video showing how the recording function will work on the Xbox One. In it, Kyle Lampe uses his voice to command the Xbox One to record gameplay, edit the clip, and upload it to SkyDrive. Once on SkyDrive, you'll be able to share it to YouTube or Facebook. This looks like a pretty sweet-looking feature, and it will be interesting to see people share more of their gaming clips.
Assassin's Creed series could have a shared open-world Posted: 19 Nov 2013 03:00 AM PST Gamereactor interviewed Jean-Sebestien Decant, the lead game designer on Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, and they talked about the possible future of the Assassin's Creed series. Decant explained that Black Flag wasn't truly a next-gen game, and that the future games in the series will really be next-gen. For reals this time. He described next-gen as "going toward a gaming place where the open world will be shared with other players." If that sounds a little bit like Watch Dogs, that's because Decant admits that Watch Dogs "is kind of showing us the path for the future." Personally, I hate the idea of other people walking around in my single-player game. If I want to play multiplayer, I'll go play multiplayer. If I want to play alone, just let me play alone. Next Assassin's Creed to feature "shared world with other players"? [Gamereactor]
Need something to do? Play Leaf Me Alone Posted: 19 Nov 2013 02:45 AM PST The Ludum Dare game jam series has been going on for a while now, with its 28th iteration coming up next month. Ludum Dare 26's theme was "minimalism," and one of the titles to come out of that event was Leaf Me Alone, a 2D exploration-based platformer starring a little tree person (or something). Set against serene music and chirping birds, Leaf Me Alone puts the player in the environment with only the basic controls of moving and jumping explained. Within a few minutes, I was on top of a tree where I found a leaf that could be used as a sort of parachute, Wind Waker style. Though it started as a small game jam title, Leaf Me Alone was added to since the competition, and is now an adventure that takes a couple hours to complete. If you're bored at work and can hide a browser game from your superiors, then you might want to take a look. Leaf Me Alone can be found on AddictingGames.com.
Sony confirms micro-transactions for Gran Turismo 6 Posted: 19 Nov 2013 02:30 AM PST Sony was really excited to show off its new "in-game credits" for Gran Turismo 6 in a recent blog post. These credits "will be purchasable through PS Store or your friendly local retailer". It's a system of made up currency that "you’ll be able to apply in-game for cars and parts." What do you think? Will you buy cars with your hard-earned cash? Yes, Gran Turismo 6 has micro-transactions [Eurogamer]
| Xbox One Twitch broadcasting not available at launch Posted: 19 Nov 2013 02:00 AM PST Unfortunately, Twitch broadcasting from Xbox One will not be supported at launch. Microsoft says that they want to ensure the broadcasting experience "meets the expectations of the Twitch community," so the feature is still in the works. It won't be ready until the first part of 2014, they say. Welp. But! Twitch on Xbox One will let Xbox Live Gold members view the streams all of the console and PC broadcasters, and earn Achievements doing so. The 10 launch Achievements at launch are as follows:
The Twitch app supports Xbox One's snap mode, which means that you can watch Twitch streams while doing something else, like watching television. Twitch supports OneGuide, meaning that you can view what's new in the Twitch catalog alongside your television listings. |
Atlus delivers! Conception 2 due in North America in 2014 Posted: 19 Nov 2013 02:00 AM PST Atlus is pregnant. And Spike Chunsoft is the daddy. Together, the proud parents-to-be have unveiled a little bundle of joy named Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars is on its way to North America sometime next spring. The Persona-esque PlayStation Vita and Nintendo 3DS role-player follows the story of a young man with special powers. In order to save the day from the monsters that plague his world, the protagonist will need to join forces with seven heroines. Together, they'll create ethereal creatures called 'Star Children' to help turn the tide of battle. Yes, it's baby-making time. The announcement follows the birth of a strange teaser site, which launched last week. The page displayed a sonogram astride and Atlus logo and little else. It was pretty mysterious at the time. However, in hindsight, it all seems to make perfect sense. Well, everything aside from the outlandish plot, anyway.
Valve have a VR prototype to show off in January Posted: 19 Nov 2013 01:30 AM PST Valve sent out information on their upcoming Steam Dev Days event, and one of the planned panels will cover the future of virtual reality hardware. Just talking about it would be too simple for Valve, so they decided to make a working prototype to show off what they see as an affordable version of virtual reality. Here's what Valve has to say about the panel, "We’ve figured out what affordable Virtual Reality (VR) hardware will be capable of within a couple of years, and assembled a prototype which demonstrates that such VR hardware is capable of stunning experiences. This type of hardware is almost certainly going to appear in short order, and the time to starting developing for it is now. This talk will discuss what the hardware is like, and the kinds of experiences it makes possible. A few attendees will be randomly selected to try out the prototype following the talk."
The Large Pixel Collider is better than your gaming PC Posted: 19 Nov 2013 01:00 AM PST Look out PC master race, there's a new custom gaming PC looking to put your rig to shame. Known as The Large Pixel Collider, the passionate, and possibly demented, folks at PC Gamer have put together a monster rig that will not only keep them on top for years to come, but will push the limits of what a powerful gaming PC can accomplish. To recap the key components, this beast has a custom PC case to house 64GB of RAM, four GTX Titan GPUs (those by themselves are worth about 4-5 modestly priced gaming computers), an ASUS X79 motherboard, and a i7-4960x CPU, just to name a few. It certainly looks like it's a handful to maintain, and I don't what to know how much power this thing consumes; but I'll admit to feeling a twinge of envy when they first powered on this creation. What do you think? Is this a massive overkill that only supremely hardcore PC gamers will want, or perhaps this is something you'd invest in if you had the means. And by means, I'm talking about thousands of dollars in disposable income.
Latest Tropes vs Women in Games is all very reasonable Posted: 19 Nov 2013 12:30 AM PST "Ms. Male" is not a comfortable thing to say. Really, "Ms." isn't, either. I've just always pronounced it closer to "Miss." Stupid prefixes. Anyway, the newest Tropes vs Women in games -- it's been a while since the last one -- is out. We're finally out of the three part "Damsel in Distress" section and on to a new thing, though a few legacy terms pop up. Mostly, it's about arbitrarily exclusive visual iconography and why it's a bad thing. More than in past videos, Anita Sarkeesian seems to make a point to emphasize that you can be critical of certain aspects of a game without demonizing the medium. She really seems to be trying to nip any easy, dumb counter arguments in the bud, like at 9:00, where she explains there is nothing inherently wrong with the aforementioned design elements on an individual level. Though I doubt that will cool any hot fingers just itching to yell angrily at her per usual. To quote myself from last time we posted one of these, "The video makes pretty straight forward and non-controversial claims in its 25 minutes, but I'll leave the seething internet community to nitpick the minute bits that offend it and then extrapolate from there the series' cogency and validity."
Persona teaser site reveals Teddie hiding in the boxes! Posted: 19 Nov 2013 12:00 AM PST I'm convinced Atlus really must enjoy tormenting its fans. Back in September, the recondite publisher launched mysterious teaser site. That's become something of a trend. Last week, Atlus unveiled an equally cryptic page featuring a sonogram of a pregnancy. And now the company has returned with a new puzzle piece to slowly drive us all insane. Since then, the initial portal of madness has been updated with images of Teddie from Persona 4. A click of the mouse reveals the anthropomorphic bear has been hiding behind the site's enigmatic wiggling rectangles. The plot thickens. But what does it all mean? I suppose we'll have to wait for Atlus to spill its guts on Sunday. And engage in rampant speculation in the meantime, of course. [Thanks, DV2FOX]
EVE Online: Rubicon out today with 1.29GB patch Posted: 18 Nov 2013 11:30 PM PST EVE Online: Rubicon, the 20th free expansion for EVE Online, is here at last with a hefty patch. The 1.21GB download has a crap ton of new features and bug fixes. I'm downloading it right now, and I should have impressions on it for you guys soon. Also, here's the Rubicon soundtrack on Soundcloud. You can read all of the patch notes right here, but I listed the most notable changes below.
The DualShock 4 can be made to work on the PC Posted: 18 Nov 2013 11:00 PM PST Thanks to some software created by InhexSTER, the PlayStation 4's DualShock 4 can be used with a PC. The guys over at PC Gamer have tested it out, and they explain how you can get it working. Right now the wireless functions seem to only work well with Windows 8, but with the cable attached it will work with Windows 7. Would you game on your PC with a DualShock 4? If you have a PlayStation 4, it can't hurt to try it, but I think I'll just wait for the Steam Controller.
Video guide: The new PlayStation 4 user interface Posted: 18 Nov 2013 10:00 PM PST I was sold on the PlayStation 4 long ago. Sony's promise of indie games for the console got me all hot and bothered, but there was always something lurking at the back of my mind: The UI. I hated the UI on the PS3. The XMB was boring to look at and it took forever to load the stupid video icons for everything. Fortunately the PS4 fixes all of that jank thankfully. Phil and I thought it would be helpful for you guys to see all of the ins and outs of the brand new interface.
Major League Gaming launches dedicated streaming platform Posted: 18 Nov 2013 09:00 PM PST The original eSports network, Major League Gaming, has launched a new premium online video streaming platform called MLG.TV. The new site offers a 1080p HD player, along with a Twitter-driven chat feature. MLG.TV has eSports programming daily, on top of streaming events like the upcoming Columbus, Ohio MLG Championship taking place November 22-24. MLG.TV is also airing a regular show called eSports Report every Thursday at 7PM Eastern. Sports Center, basically. So MLG is getting into the whole streaming business, butting up against Twitch and UStream. Except in this case it's all MLG produced only, and it's just for eSports content.
Stick It to the Man looks proper nuts, out today Posted: 18 Nov 2013 08:00 PM PST Stick It to the Man is out today, November 19, on PS3. The Vita version is dropping sometime in December and it will be crossbuy, so you'll get both versions regardless of which you buy. When this got on my radar earlier this year, I dug it. Nice and grimy, like Rocko's Modern Life and cartoons of that ilk. This trailer turns up the weird and crazy factor even higher, somehow, and gives a few glimpses at gameplay. That geriatric clown was creepy, and then got out-creeped by the cannibalistic cook slowly suckling on a finger. We've got a review coming this week, but you can always stick it to us and buy it before we weigh in.
Swappurtunity: Check out AquaPazza's alternative costumes Posted: 18 Nov 2013 06:00 PM PST Someone's been drinking l'acqua pazza, if AquaPazza: Aquaplus Dream Match is any indication. The wacky 2D fighter, in which you can drop bookshelves on your opponents using a cast that consists of 13 different visual novel and JRPG characters (plus their partners), is out today, November 19, on PS3. You can nab it at retail or download it through the PlayStation Network for $30. You can also check out some of the palette swaps if those do anything for you. Some of the names are great, like "Dreamy Miracle Prism," "Preppy Othello," and "The Fox and the Grapes." Our review is coming just as soon as we can test the net code so look out for that, too.
Barney (the dinosaur) voices lead in Crying is Not Enough Posted: 18 Nov 2013 04:00 PM PST Crying is Not Enough is trying to get itself Greenlit on Steam. It's like an unwitting spiritual successor to Deadly Premonition, if that trailer is any indication. It's full of amusingly stilted voice acting and features some preternatural elements as its lead tries to bring his wife out of a coma. Side note, does anyone actually call their doctor, "doctor?" Like, "Thank you, doctor." Sounds like something York would say, though. Jacob, Crying is Not Enough's lead, is voiced by the guy who has apparently voiced Barney the Dinosaur for the last ten years. Maybe some of you parents will recognize him. Remember to click the "Greenlight" button if you want in on this madness.
Aaron Paul cocks his head in this Need for Speed trailer Posted: 18 Nov 2013 03:00 PM PST I've watched Meth Dad, so I know Aaron Paul can do a bit of acting. If this trailer is any indication, though, the director just kept asking him to cock his head and read his awful lines in as gritty a voice as possible. Who has been Michael Keaton's agent over the last 15 years? I do not understand his career trajectory. Did Jack Frost ruin him that badly? At least he occasionally pops up somewhere cool these days, like The Other Guys or Toy Story 3. Also, is it just me for does the villain look like a baby? Maybe this Need for Speed film will be a new generation's Fast & Furious, but given that they are still making (surprisingly good!) Fast & Furious movies, this looks more like another Torque. Just weird.
