This Team Fortress 2 short is absolutely brilliant

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 02:00 PM PST

Ever been so inspired by something that you want to take up that hobby immediately in an attempt to inspire future generations in the same way, only to then realize that it's way too much freaking work to even come close? Well, this Source Filmmaker Team Fortress 2 short titled "Lil Guardian Pyro" has done just that to me. It's....amazing. Incredible animation detail, an original soundtrack, and a theme that appeals to the Toy Story lover in all of us.

Just watch it. Seriously. And be sure to check out their other videos, they're equally as astounding!

The Mighty Quest For Epic Loot now available on Steam

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 01:30 PM PST

Ubisoft's upcoming free-to-play title The Mighty Quest For Epic Loot, which is currently in closed beta, has made its way onto Steam -- those wishing to join the beta via Steam, hold your horses; you may not like what's coming next.

On the game's website, there are currently two ways to gain access to the beta: either register and hope you receive an invitation or purchase a pack from the 'Original Opulencian' program which gives you instant access to the beta along with in-game items.

However on Steam there is no option to register. The only way to gain access to Mighty Quest's beta is by purchasing one of the four Original Opulencian packs; these range from $19.99 to a whopping $99.99.

I remember being excited about what Ubisoft were doing with this game several months ago, but now I really don't like where any of this is going. How on earth do they plan on keeping this game balanced when you can buy a pack containing all of this?

3DS holiday ad will make you wish you were a kid again

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 01:00 PM PST

I've always been a fan of Nintendo's advertising, from Pokemon's link trading commercials to Wayne Brady rapping about Wii Party U -- it's always been spot on. Don't question my unironic love for Wayne Brady. I suppose it comes as no surprise that this year's holiday TV commercial for the 3DS is extremely well done.

It captures that Christmas morning magic: snow piling up outside, awesome decorations, family, and spending all day playing that sweet new Nintendo handheld you just received as a gift. I don't think I'm alone in saying those are my favorite gaming memories I have.

I'm super jealous kids get to grow up with the 3DS (arguably the most important system to own this year). Although, I had the immense privilege of growing up with the Game Boy Pocket and Game Boy Advance. So that was pretty cool.

Stealth-action game Republique coming December

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 12:30 PM PST

Republique hit its half-million-dollar Kickstarter goal almost a year and a half ago now. While it's looking at its projected June 2013 release date in the rear view, a RedBull (I know, right?) chat with former Metal Gear Solid producer and Republique head Ryan Payton revealed that the game is "probably going to be coming out in December."

Initially announced as an iOS exclusive, Republique is also getting, "a unique version of République specifically designed for PC and Mac with new features, gameplay and story elements that speak to the strengths of the platform."

It's always nice to see a Kickstarter deliver. Despite platform reservations -- how good it could be on iOS, how it might translate in the PC version -- Republique looks pretty neat. I'm excited to stealth my way through its repu-bleak, 1984-styled world. Any proud backers before us today? You helped make this.

Suda51: The games matter, not the platform

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 12:00 PM PST

In this hurricane of emotions and hype during the release of the next-gen consoles, it's easy to get caught up in fandom and want to stick with what you know most. Because of this, Suda51 spoke his mind about the current situation, and why people should try to play more games outside of the big brands and what they're normally used to.

In a talk with GamesIndustry International, Suda51 explains how at the end of the day, the games are what matter. "I guess what's more important is the video game itself and not the platform it's on, and I think it's really important to be able to have the chance to play all kinds of different games -- not just mega AAA titles but indie games too."

He also offers some praise and confidence towards indie development. "You know, indie games are not necessarily poorly made, I think nowadays we are shifting towards the era where you get to play all kinds of different games of different sizes -- but they are all equally as good."

It's definitely a good thing to try and broaden your horizons. While the console drama over the last year has left some people disinterested, it's important to know that there's always going to be games coming. The last decade has certainly shown us that good games can exist even on platforms you'd least expect.

i Live is a creepy baby simulator for iOS

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 11:30 AM PST

Words cannot express how deeply unsettled I am by this video for i Live, a forthcoming iOS game from Italian developer LGD Studio. It has a room full of squishy, mottled, 3D-rendered baby things and tutorial instructions from a spermatozoon wearing glasses and a bowtie. There is nothing about this situation which does not make me uncomfortable.

The game was originally scheduled to release today, but has since been pushed back so that LGD can make the gameplay, "truly unique." I don't think they need to worry too much about that.

Daily Humble Store deal has Fez and Guacamelee! for cheap

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 11:15 AM PST

The Humble Store has a set of daily deals going on right now that I hope you'll see before it's too late. Most notably, there's Fez for $3.99. If not for the sense of discovery or lovely pixel art, do it for Disasterpeace's sublime soundtrack (you've heard Side F and Side Z, right?).

I've also got to give shout-outs to the 2D god game Reus ($3.39) and the excellent co-op brawler Guacamelee! Gold Edition ($7.49). Some fine games these are.

I'm sure it's been said before, but I do quite like how the Humble Store shows a hard number for the amount of money raised for charity -- $130,000 and counting. It feels good to be a gamer.

There's a prototype Xbox One controller that emits scents

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 10:30 AM PST

In the first of a series of behind-the-scenes articles on the development of the Xbox One controller, GamesBeat covers the work that went into the new and improved gamepad. "When we started this program, I went and said, 'Hey, we need to think about redesigning the Xbox 360 controller.' The reaction was vociferously negative," said Xbox general manager for accessories Zulfi Alam. "'Are you guys crazy? This is the best-in-class controller. People love this.'"

The end result is not drastically different from the Xbox 360 controller but there were substantially more experimental designs along the way, as is often the case. "We looked at concepts like adding displays to the controller. We looked at concepts like adding smell." According to Alam, "as you walked through a jungle [in-game], you'd smell the flora."

Ideas involving screens and the like on the gamepad itself were eventually ditched -- Microsoft wanted to keep the focus on TV and there were also concerns over battery life. All told, over $100 million was spent on the Xbox One controller.

"For any company, when you spend that much money, you have to make sure that the output is amazing," he said. "This team bet its careers on this. We were all in. When we went in and said we wanted to do this, we didn’t anticipate it was going to be tweaking a little bit of plastic here or there. That was not the intent. My management team said, 'Either you're going to make changes, and you're going to believe in the changes you make, and you're going to make sure that they're amazing -- or you're not touching this thing.'"

Nice moves: NBA Live 14 next-gen demo drops tomorrow

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 10:15 AM PST

Feeling a bit hesitant about lacing up your high-top Nikes and returning to the virtual hardwood? It's tough to blame you; a lot can go wrong when you step on that virtual court. You might pull a virtual Kevin Ware and shatter your virtual leg in one of the most gruesome virtual accidents anyone's ever seen.

Fortunately, NBA Live 14 will let you ease into it slowly, if you'd like. On November 19, a demo is releasing for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, so potential consumers can give the no-longer defunct basketball franchise the ol' college try. Well, PS4 owners can; those that are getting Xbox One's have to wait until the console's actually out.

The demo will include a full game with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Oklahoma City Thunder, New York Knicks, and Golden State Warriors being available teams. Also available are five Big Moments in which the player tries to recreate real life performances, and a few Live Ultimate Team fantasy challenges.

Ubisoft explains how launch games can be underwhelming

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 10:00 AM PST

It's always about the games when it comes to the console, and with the release of the new systems, it's easy to take for granted how much effort goes into the making of the titles. For many, the games available at launch can be somewhat disappointing and even underwhelming. Which is a fair assessment, considering people are paying top dollar for new hardware. With all this work going into the consoles, why is it that the lineup sometimes has to suffer? Well, the senior vice president of sales and marketing at Ubisoft, Tony Key, might have an answer for you.

In an interview with GamesIndustry International, Key talks about the amount of work that goes into developing for new consoles, and how it can lead to some growing pains. "Right now, all publishers are transitioning their development resources," he says. "For a game like Assassin's Creed: Black Flag, most of the sales are still going to be on current generation platforms. We can't make a version for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One that's so wildly different that we can't market them together. So, for now, developers and designers are focused on making a game that works really well on all of the systems -- but as we transition resources to the next gen, it's going to be more difficult to do that because the power of these machines is going to allow so much more creativity."

In a lot of these cases, cross-gen titles can be either hit or miss. While Assassin's Creed IV turned out to be one of the better cross-gen releases, it does serves as an interesting example of AAA game development during the transitional period.

Live show: Chivalry: Deadliest Warrior

[Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.]

Try to imagine a group of ninjas, spartans, vikings, pirates, samurais, and knights, running around like madmen, yelling nonsensical jibber-jabber at the top of their lungs, all the while trying to brutally dismember one another. Did you imagine it? Good, now you have an idea of what's about to go down on Mash Tactics tonight, as I invite the community to a few rounds of the always hilarious, always bloody, and always obnoxiously loud, Chivalry: Deadliest Warrior.

A couple of weeks ago we dove in and tried out the beta for this game, and it instantaneously became a fan favorite. I mean, what's not to love about chopping up your opponent, and kicking their body parts all over the map before running off screaming like a crazed banshee? If you missed out on all the insanely entertaining madness the first time around, fret not, as the game is now fully released on Steam, and we'll be returning to the battle this evening. Get there and get in!

See some of the changes in A Link Between Worlds

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 09:15 AM PST

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is out this Friday. Anyone who wants their hit of nostalgia early can scope this direct comparison video that places A Link Between Worlds' recreated world side by side with the original A Link to the Past.

I wonder if Chris is still catching enough flak for his "alright" review that I can mention that I prefer A Link to the Past's art style without starting a million comment thread. I appreciate Between Worlds' pretty interiors, but I'm not crazy about its outdoors or 3D characters.

Anyone picking this and Super Mario 3D World up this Friday, or is the Xbox One and its apparently good launch games too tempting?

Frozenbyte 'Huge Seal' promotion offers Steam coupons

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 08:45 AM PST

FrozenByte is attempting to give people a head-start on their holiday Steam purchases with a new "Huge Seal" promotion. By visiting hugeseal.com and signing in with a Steam account, you can receive coupons for five games (from a list of 35), with discounts ranging from 40-80% off. And for every three purchased (for your own account; no gifts), you'll get rewarded with a code for a free copy of one of the other games on the list. Neat.

That list of available titles is pretty excellent, too. La-Mulana, Skulls of the Shogun, Thomas Was Alone, Antichamber... it goes on and on. The "Huge Seal" event runs through this week and the offers are pretty sweet. Of course, there's also a Steam Winter Sale looming out there, somewhere in the distance, waiting to strike at your wallet. Spend wisely.

Wadjet Eye's debut The Shivah get's a re-release

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 08:30 AM PST

Despite enjoying the recent Wadjet Eye Games adventure titles, like Gemeni Rue and Resonance, I didn't know anything about the studio's first game The Shivah until now. First released in 2006, the game is being remastered and re-released as Shivah: Kosher Edition on November 21.

Costing just $3.99 for a pre-order, Kosher Edition will feature new graphics and new music and will be available on Steam, PC DRM-free, and iOS. The story centers around New York rabbi Russell Stone whose synagogue has fallen on hard times but when bequeathed a large amount of money by a deceased member of his congregation, Russell embarks on a mission to uncover the reasons behind his good luck. Wadjet Eye adventure games are some of the best point 'n click games around so I'm really interested to see where it all began for them.

First two episodes of localized Pokemon Origins are live

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 08:15 AM PST

Well, it's finally here guys. The first episode of the localized Pokemon Origins went live this past Friday, the second went live today, and it's all free to watch on Pokemon TV. If you're not up to speed, Origins is an anime completely separate from the main one as it's a retelling of Pokemon Red/Blue. In fact, it completely follows the games to the point that each episode starts and ends with loading and saving, respectively. Those kinds of details don't stop there. It's super awesome.

The English voice talent does a pretty good job, but I've never been one to be picky about dubs or localization jobs or anything. I will say Professor Oak's actor isn't how I exactly imagined him sounding, but I can forgive it. Oh, and that awful clip of Charmander screaming bloody f**king murder was censored for the US version. Let's all be happy about that.

Anyway, if you played Red or Blue pretty extensively back in the day, your nostalgia meters will go off the charts. This is an homage to your childhood in all the right ways.

Warhammer 40K: Eternal Crusade doesn't seem so bad

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 08:00 AM PST

I cannot keep these Warhammer 40,000 games straight, and I say that as a fan of the property. There's an MMO in the works called Eternal Crusade which looks halfway decent, as evidenced by the snippet of early gameplay footage found in this developer diary.

Let's be frank -- it looks like Space Marine. I am okay with this. More than okay, actually, since we never did get a sequel to that game and its mechanics deserved one.

The fact that Behaviour Interactive is handling development has me cautious given the studio's prior work, but what's shown here has convinced me to at least keep an eye on Eternal Crusade.

Techland has something it wants to show you. It's been working super hard to make sure you're impressed by the lighting effects in Dying Light. You gotta throw all these next-gen resources at something, after all.

So, take a moment to soak it all in -- the way that the sunlight glimmers through the leaves and showers the screen with a radiant warmth as a zombie pukes out its guts six feet to your left. It's the little things.

These are the nominees for Spike's VGX awards

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 07:15 AM PST

I wasn't so sure about the Spike VGAs being rebranded as VGX, but then I came to my senses and realized such things really don't matter. Some of you will argue that the show's awards don't matter, either. At any rate, this stuff is not going anywhere.

The list of nominees is now accessible and for Game of the Year, it's between BioShock Infinite, Grand Theft Auto V, Super Mario 3D World, The Last of Us, and Tomb Raider. My guess is that Nintendo or Naughty Dog will come out on top. Then again, Rockstar could just as easily take it.

Viewers can also vote on their most anticipated game, with the options being Destiny, Titanfall, South Park: The Stick of Truth, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and Watch Dogs. That's a tough call.

Get Gone Home and four music albums for $25

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 07:00 AM PST

Gone Home, one of the most lauded games of 2013, has re-released with a bundle package that includes albums from indie artists whose music was featured in the main game. For $5 more than the standalone cost of Gone Home you'll be getting download codes for Gone Home’s original soundtrack, Calculated by Heavens to Betsy, The Youngins are Hardcore by The Youngins, Pottymouth by Bratmobile, as well as the full game.

I'm not even going to pretend like I know who any of these bands are, or what their sound is like, but for five bucks more, it really can't hurt to try some new tunes. I'm mean, it's five bucks. Don't try to act like you haven't done dumber things with more money

Limited holiday edition Ouya comes in white

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 06:45 AM PST

Ouya is trying its damnedest to appeal to those looking to put a little gaming under their tree this holiday. Today, a special, exclusive holiday edition of the console has been announced which comes in bright, white case and features 16GB of storage capacity, twice that of the standard version. The limited run is only available in North America and can be ordered now direct from Ouya for $129.99.

For a long time, I considered the possibility of picking up an Ouya because of the low price, but it simply doesn't excite me when effectively everything I'd want to play seems to be coming to PC eventually. This white version is even more of a dealbreaker, in part because it's more expensive but also due to the color itself. I would be so much more depressed by an unused Ouya if it were easier to tell at a glance how much dust it was collecting.

You ought to download Binary Domain on PS Plus this week

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 06:30 AM PST

Yes, we've covered this month's PlayStation Plus games for North America already. But I can't pass on having just one more opportunity to represent Binary Domain, which joins the PS Vita version of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath in the Instant Game Collection tomorrow.

Not to hype up this goofy third-person shooter as the best thing ever or anything, but, yeah -- you need to download this if you're a Plus member. It's got robots who believe they are humans, which is pretty cool, and the actual enemies you're fighting are some of the most satisfying to take down in -- dare I say it? -- all of gaming. Worth your time, definitely.

As for discounts, there's only one planned for this week: Worms 2: Armageddon will be $4.50 for PS Plus subscribers, down from its regular price of $14.99.

Review: Legends of Aethereus

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 06:00 AM PST

I really love role-playing games, and I will usually put up with some flaws if the overall experience is interesting. A bad game can have a couple of good mechanics, and I will probably play it longer than I should. When I started up Legends of Aethereus I thought it would be a mediocre role-playing game with a weird steampunk fantasy setting. After playing it for a few hours I realized that it was actually a bad game cleverly disguised as a mediocre game.

Sure, it has some cute tricks up its sleeve, but after the first mission I felt like I had seen everything the game had to offer. Fifteen hours later I realized that I was right -- the first mission does have everything this game has to offer

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition listed for next gen

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 05:45 AM PST

On Amazon's Italian site, there is a PlayStation 4 listing for something called Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition that's said to be releasing on January 24 for €59.99. According to the description, this re-release includes all of the game's DLC, most of which is geared toward multiplayer. And, presumably, we'll be able to see Lara's flowing hair in all its glory.

The site doesn't explicitly mention an Xbox One version, though there has been talk of exactly that after GameStop's German site previously listed "Tomb Raider" for the platform. I quite liked the current version on PC and, come to think of it, it was the first game in the series that I played to completion. Would you be down for a double dip, or was once enough?

Nintendo to show off games in nationwide mall tour

Nintendo's taking to the road this holiday shopping season, embarking on a 23-stop mall tour across the United States, to get families hooked on the idea of bringing gaming home for Christmas. They're bringing a whole lot of games with them too, with hands-on play expected to be available for more than a dozen Wii U titles (including Wii Party U, Windwaker HD, and Rayman Legends) and an equally impressive number of 3DS games (such as Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, and Pokémon X/Y). They'll also have suffering people in costumes you can take pictures with in most locations.

The tour begins next week on November 25th and continues through December 22nd. A full schedule of mall appearances can be found on Nintendo's website.

Xbox One achievement interface shown in photos

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 05:15 AM PST

Over the weekend, Microsoft Studios' Mike Ybarra tweeted out a pair of photos demonstrating how achievements will be represented on the Xbox One. Instead of a simple list, there is a less helpful grouping of huge images, allowing a rather limited number of achievements to be displayed on screen at one time. The second image shows a full-screen view of a single achievement, presented as a massive wallpaper-style image with the award conditions overlayed.

Pretty? I suppose. Isn't this really impractical for the people who seem to most appreciate the act of earning achievements? I would think it much more useful to have a list option if I were going to attempt to maximize my Gamerscore.

How do you like those achievements! [Twitter via CVG]

Sigh, Puzzle & Dragons now has Angry Birds dungeons

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 05:00 AM PST

The plague that is Angry Birds is infecting everything. Even the cocaine-coated fusion of Pokemon and Bejeweled that is Puzzle & Dragons cannot resist the avian epidemic. The feverishly popular role-playing puzzle game now features ephemeral Angry Birds-themed content, GungHo Online has confessed.

Puzzle & Dragons now includes a dungeon called Piggy Island, where players can fight and capture Rovio's contagious creations until December 1. Also, as previously reported, the Finnish developer is holding a contest asking fans to submit illustrations of the mobile game crossover. Should you wish to enter an image of monsters doing horribly violent things to the cartoon birds, the deadline is this Wednesday, November 20.

Review: PlayStation 4

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 04:00 AM PST

Remember daydreaming about a system that would let you buy and download games online, and then let you share your experiences socially? There was a day when the concept seemed so far off, but now that system is finally here. We've been talking about Sony's next game console for years, so it feels kind of weird to actually have one now.

The PS4 is a blend of technologies we expected and features we didn't. It's a clear step forward from where the PlayStation brand has come, and a statement on where Sony thinks games are going. It's less about what it is and more about what it does.

Star Citizen is a PC game and 'will never be dumbed down'

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 03:30 AM PST

There were some rumors popping up that Chris Roberts' space behemoth, Star Citizen, would be coming to the PlayStation 4. Robert's wrote up a post stating that "Star Citizen IS a PC game. It will NEVER be dumbed down for a lesser platform. We will NOT limit the input options or supported peripherals to the lowest common denominator. We will NOT pass on features and technology just because they will only run on some hardware configurations."

He goes on to talk to clarify that he has no current plans to bring Star Citizen  to any consoles, how the game will use AMD's Mantle technology, and how he's playing games on 4k monitors.

In an interview with VG24/7, CCP went into some details on the future direction of EVE Online. CCP want to begin bringing in elements into EVE that will allow players to construct their own stargates, leading to new systems for pilots to colonize.

X Rebirth devs are sorry about bugs, fixes coming soon

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 02:30 AM PST

X Rebirth came out on Friday, and it is facing the usual bugs that games from Egosoft suffer from at launch. On the Steam forums, they have listed the known issues, and some plans on fixing them. Essentially what has happened is that the game wasn't optimized for high-end PCs, so everyone with a decent gaming rig is suffering from terrible frame rates.

I started playing it on Friday, and I'll have a full review up soon. It's a big game, and I don't want to rush through it. The game is playable for most people, but if you are worried about bad performance and low framerates, you might want to hold off until a few patches come out. Egosoft is good at fixing the most glaring bugs quickly, and it's capable of smoothing out the bumps in its games.

Dyscourse's bonus story is a who's who of indie devs

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 02:15 AM PST

Progress on Dyscourse has been moving along, though perhaps a bit slowly. The Kickstarter campaign is about one-third funded with 18 days remaining. Hoping to spark some more interest in the project, developer Owlchemy Labs has announced the Indie Plane Crash, an additional story featuring ten independent game developers.

The ten personalities to be included are Tim Schafer (Psychonauts), Edmund McMillen (Super Meat Boy), Phil Tibitoski (Octodad), Alexander Bruce (Antichamber), Ron Carmel (World of Goo), Robin Hunicke (Journey), Ichiro Lambe (AaAaAA!), Adam Saltsman (Canabalt), Will Stallwood (Auditorium), and Rami Ismail (Ridiculous Fishing).

The best part about this addition is that it is neither a backer exclusive reward nor a stretch goal. Should Dycourse be funded, it will be included in all copies of the game.

Very Quick Tips: LocoCycle

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 02:00 AM PST

LocoCycle is a pretty insane game. In some ways it's wrong, in others, it's oh so right. But one thing's for sure -- if you love cheesy action films and want something completely different in a videogame, Loco might be your huckleberry.

Here are some tips to facilitate said craziness.

Destructoid's Xbox One exclusive launch title guide

The Xbox One has a large variety of launch titles, including shooters, action games, a fighting game, and even a racer. I would contend that this is one of the strongest launch lineups of all time, but you can dig into our full launch coverage and find out yourself.

Here, you'll find a quick rundown of the exclusives launching with the Xbox One, or when to expect coverage (due to embargos or other limiting factors). If you're looking for multi-platform game coverage, you can find it at our PlayStation 4 launch area.

Review: Dead Rising 3

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 12:00 AM PST

A lot of doubts filled the air when Dead Rising 3 was announced. As both an Xbox One exclusive and a Capcom-produced title, not a whole lot of excitement was abound when the game was first announced. Then you add in the "We're going for a Call of Duty audience" developer comments, and you have one certified shit-storm of a release.

But nothing compares to actually playing it for yourself, and I'm pleased to say that the third iteration of this now famous franchise has risen (ha!) to the occasion. In fact, Dead Rising 3 is the first game I've seen that really harnesses the power of next-gen consoles.

Oh, and it's also a phenomenal game as well.

Review: Crimson Dragon

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 12:00 AM PST

As the spiritual successor to the Panzer Dragoon franchise, Crimson Dragon has some big shoes to fill. The talent is there, as the former director of the first three Panzer games and a Panzer composer are attached, but the prospect of Kinect gameplay and an Xbox One exclusivity deal made things a bit hard to swallow.

The forced Kinect scheme has since been dropped, and as time went on, the game looked better and better. Although it may not be quite up to par with some of the masterful games it takes inspiration from, it's a fine successor all the same for old and new fans alike.

Review: LocoCycle (Xbox One)

Posted: 18 Nov 2013 12:00 AM PST

I've always had a soft spot for SpyHunter. Although Twisted Metal and other arena-based shooters are great in their own right, there's something special about an action racing game that lets you hit the open road.

LocoCyle is kind of like that. But add in a few sentient talking motorcycles, crazy biker gangs, a plot for world domination, and an innocent mechanic forced along for the ride. Yep, it's pretty hard to explain, but I'll try.

Dota 2 is adding a Stanley Parable announcer pack

Posted: 17 Nov 2013 11:30 PM PST

Davey Wreden, the writer for The Stanley Parable, tweeted out that he is writing an announcer pack for Dota 2. We don't have any more details on it right now, but just the fact that it's coming is enough to get me excited.

I love DLC like this. It's simple and fun, and it adds something interesting to the existing game. I would much rather buy a narration pack than a gun of +1 rampage.

Crucial announces that DDR4 RAM is coming out soon

Posted: 17 Nov 2013 11:00 PM PST

Crucial are rolling out the next-generation of memory, and it might be available as early as the end of 2013. Crucial has a promo up on their site for the new DDR4 memory, and there are lots of fancy graphics showing you just how much faster it will be, and how bad you will feel if you still have DDR3 instead of DDR4.

DDR4 will be double the speed of DDR3, which came out back in 2007. It will also use 20% less power,  and each stick of RAM will be able to have double the amount of memory on it.

It could be a few months before this becomes widely available, but if you had plans to build a new PC you might want to wait until DDR4 is out, at least to see if the prices of DDR3 go down.
