| Nuclear Throne sells 10K, Ridiculous Fishing goes Android Posted: 17 Nov 2013 10:00 AM PST It's been a little while since we've heard anything from Vlambeer about their upcoming projects Luftrausers and Nuclear Throne. Looks like we'll have to wait a little longer for news on the former. The game is still without a release date, largely due to the lengthy certification process. On the bright side, it sounds like plenty of new content is headed to Nuclear Throne. The dev team sounds extremely encouraged by the response to the game so far (10K in pre-release beta sales so far) and are working to take all the feedback they receive from players into the continued design of the final product. The biggest news here is that Vlambeer's mobile classic Ridiculous Fishing is headed to Android. When can we expect the game to head to the popular smart phone consumer base? According to Vlambeer "It might be sooner than you think". As Jimmy Durante once said "Ha chachachacha!"

| Posted: 17 Nov 2013 09:30 AM PST For those of you who don't know, I love to break games. As a hobby I like to push the boundaries of games and do the unthinkable. Be it Dark Souls where I have 9093093039039024241 hit points or make 15 foot tall basketball players. Well, after playing around with WWE 2K14, I've unlocked some NPC's as characters. Technically, you're not suppose to play with ring announcer Howard Finkel, but by hell we're gonna play with him. |
| No hands needed when using Internet Explorer on Xbox One Posted: 17 Nov 2013 09:00 AM PST There's been a recent surge in the power of next-generation Internet browsers as of late and if the specs on Internet Explorer for Xbox One are any indication, then this generation's console war may have already been decided. Through the power of voice commands with the newest Kinect, users can browse the web while keeping both hands completely free to do amazing things like eating sandwiches or really anything the heart desires. On a more serious note, IE for Xbox One does look pretty impressive. Voice commands and hand gesture control aside, the ability to snap walkthroughs or some of our own Chris Carter's quick tips into a window, while playing Dead Rising 3, could be pretty useful. The added functionality with Smart Glass -- for navigating and to send websites back and forth between devices -- adds even more control to the user. Having watched football all morning, it's quite evident that Microsoft is going full force to deliver the Xbox One as a true "all in one" home entertainment device -- thanks to commercials that have yet to show many games, let alone actual gameplay. My favorite advert of the day goes to the their NFL and fantasy football on Xbox One commercial that completely neglects that Xbox One even plays video games. Sure we may all know here that the Xbox One plays games, but maybe to your Mom and Dad, or crazy Uncle Larry, Internet Explorer; Skype; and fantasy football are the tools needed for Microsoft to be the big winner this holiday season. Who knows, crazier things have happened. |
| Trademark surfaces for Fallout 4 in Europe Posted: 17 Nov 2013 08:00 AM PST Hot off the discovery of the website, thesurvivor2299, comes further proof that the fourth installment of Bethesda's Fallout series might be right around the corner. Surfacing on the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Markets' (OHIM) website, the official trademark office of the European Union, is a registration for Fallout 4 by Bethesda Softworks LLC. The previously discovered teaser site beeps Morse code that corresponds to the sites countdown to December 11 -- which written in European dating style would be11-12-13. Hopefully both these signs point to the highly anticipated sequel. We all know Bethesda is working on something and a new Fallout title seems like a likely candidate. |
| PS4-to-Vita Remote Play setup is super easy Posted: 17 Nov 2013 07:31 AM PST It'll take you longer to watch this video than it will to set up Remote Play between your PS4 and your PlayStationVita. Here's how it goes:
That's really it. We'll go over all the neat things that Remote Play does for both systems in our upcoming PS4 hardware review, but at a bare minimum you can play PS4 games on the pooper, so that's good. Just remember the proper bathroom game system handling protocol if you choose to use your Vita in there. |
| Why is Japan's McDonald's Happy Meal so much cooler? Posted: 17 Nov 2013 07:00 AM PST Take a look at these amazingly adorable Super Mario toys that will be included in Japan's McDonald's Happy Meal equivalent, the Happy Set, beginning on November 22. Two sets, which sadly in the year of Luigi are absent of Mario's green overall wearing brother, will both come in a special edition Christmas box that folds out to reveal a Christmas tree. Additionally, those who purchase the Happy Set on December 23 or 24 will get a special Mario themed dice game. Now this is some poor eating I can get behind for the US. Buy a Happy Meal then get an awesome toy like the good old days; who could resist? I mean its like a million times better than stuffing your face with Taco Bell or guzzling down Slurpees till ones body explodes to, maybe, win a new console. Am I right... yeah I'm right. |
| Sup Holmes explodes with protoplasm thanks to Porpentine Posted: 17 Nov 2013 06:30 AM PST A lot of people first heard of Porpentine earlier this year when IGF winner Richard Hofmeier spray painted the name of her game Howling Dogs over the marquee for his own nominee, Cart Life. It was like if Kanye West spray painted Beyonce's name over his own at the Grammys. But who is Porpentine? Today on Sup Holmes, we'll endeavor to find out. We'll be talking to Porpentine about her work at blogs like Rock Paper Shotgun and Free Indie Games, her new game Armada (scroll down to download), the power of Patreon, and a whole lot more. The show starts at 1pm PST/4pm EST so don't be late! |
| Review: Need for Speed: Rivals Posted: 17 Nov 2013 06:00 AM PST Like any good racer, the Need for Speed franchise never stops moving. They've come a long way since the early '90s, though the last few years' releases have been more about refinement of the formula than anything else, moving more towards an open world structure. The latest in the franchise, Need for Speed: Rivals, takes a big step by going all-in on one mode that combines a single-player campaign with online multiplayer. The rest -- including the cops, the cars, and the crashing -- stay the same. In a sense, they've made it so players can jump in and go fast without having to worry about the details. And it's all the better for it. |
| Zoe Quinn launches Tidbytes: Biweekly free games for you Posted: 17 Nov 2013 05:00 AM PST Some people want to make videogames. A lot of want to play videogames. Everyone wants to get something for free. Tidbytes brings all those wants over one roof. Zoe Quinn (Depression Quest) latest project pledges to provide you, the player, with a new videogame every two weeks. So far we've gotten Clone and Win R.L. Stien's Money. If you're a fan of Zoe's prior games like Crystal Crashers and Jeff Goldblum Staring Contest, then you'll find a lot to love here. The plan is to release a new Tidbyte ever other Thursday, which puts us out until November 28th for the next installment. It will be interesting to see how long Zoe can keep up this pace, and what she puts out next. |
| Game Center CX 3 better get localized Posted: 17 Nov 2013 04:00 AM PST XSeed took a chance on localizing Game Center CX (the game based on the popular Japanese Lets Play TV show) in the form of Retro Game Challenge, and they suffered for it. Despite great reviews, the DS's huge install base, and being released during the big retro craze from 4-5 years ago, the game failed to sell up to expectation. That hurt the sequel's chances of finding localization, which was the real tragedy. As great as the original is, the second game is better in just about every way. Many suspected that piracy was to blame. The DS was incredibly easy to pirate on, and Retro Game Challenge is a collection of games that are sure to appeal to experts of game emulation, -- the exact group who would be most knowledgeable about pirating games. It's easy to guess that a lot of people who were interested in Retro Game Challenge just downloaded it an never looked back. The good news for publishers is that the 3DS is a lot less piracy-friendly, and has been a successful home for a lot of smaller, stranger releases. Could Game Center CX 3 ever make it out of Japan? Package is with the fan translated Game Center CX 2, and release it at both retail and the eShop, and I'm sure it would find a sizable audience. |
| Upcoming Sega Genesis/Megadrive art book looks marvelous Posted: 17 Nov 2013 03:00 AM PST SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis: Collected Works, an officially licensed 25th anniversary commemorative compilation of artwork, development sketches, hardware manufacturing plans, and interviews from Sega's golden years looks to be the definitive book for long time fans. The hard backed book, at the time of this article has nearly doubled, its Kickstarter goal. It's slated to contain over 20 interviews from Sega team members that include the likes of Yuji Naka (Sonic the Hedgehog), Yu Suzuki (Shenmue and Virtua Fighter), and Yuzo Koshiro (Streets of Rage). Additionally, the approximately 300 page book will also feature a foreword from Earthworm Jim creator Dave Perry. I practically grew up a Sega kind in the 90s and I have to say I'm itching to pledge my share for copy of this book. The collection of design docs and hand-drawn sketches from some of my all-time favorite games makes this something destined for my coffee table. Hopefully the interviews contain just as many memorable facts, that have yet to be shared, to truly make this book something special. |
| Mobile & console gaming different as cheap and fine wine Posted: 17 Nov 2013 02:00 AM PST I'm just going to let this little quote from Sony Computer Entertainment of America president and CEO Jack Trenton, regarding his thoughts about what he calls “good-enough gaming,” breathe like a fine bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon recently poured into a decanter. "It’s like wine. Your first wine tastes good, and you start drinking more of it. You go from white to red, and you go from $10 bottles to $50 bottles. Some people just stop at $10, but some people become wine aficionados and, all of a sudden, if it’s not Screaming Eagle, it’s not good enough. People don’t drink Screaming Eagle because it’s $800 and they want to throw away $790. They perceive that that’s a much better wine than the $10 bottle. Smartphone gaming might be good enough for somebody. For other people, they find themselves wanting more, and they're looking for better controls, more technology and a more immersive experience," Trenton said. So how does that taste? Is console gaming that vastly superior to the experiences on iOS and Android platforms? Do controllers and fancy high-definition graphics make a game more fulfilling? Personally, I'm not sure. To me, first and foremost, games are about fun. Not to mention cell phones and tablets are just, if not more, expensive than Sony's PlayStation 4. |
| Wake up to this live-action Lightning Returns commercial Posted: 17 Nov 2013 01:00 AM PST Set to release next week in Japan, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII latest 15 second TV spot showcases a live-action version of the titular character. Albeit extremely brief, the model portraying Lightning, intermixed with the in-game character model, does look quite spot on. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, a game where Lighting returns, presumably strikes, then plays dress-up, will be available on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The conclusion (hopefully) and third act of the Final Fantasy XIII saga hits Japan on November 21, and follows up in North America and Europe early next February. |
