The best and worst games of the week

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 10:00 AM PST

The Playstation 4 dominated this weeks review schedule and rightfully so. Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack, Resogun, and Contrast dominated our postings -- and as of last night my Facebook wall (please turn off your notifications friends) -- but they were not the only games worth talking about this week.

Perhaps the biggest individual release of the week was Nintendo's latest in The Legend Zelda franchise, A Link Between Worlds. It was by far our most popular story of the week with tons of amazing comments. There was also the new Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus and the long awaited DLC to BioShock Infinite that brought us back to Rapture: Burial at Sea Episode One.

All in all it was a pretty exciting weeks for games. This year is quickly coming to an end, but we still have the Xbox One's looming release and one of the Destructoid's staff's most anticipated titles Super Mario 3D World right around the corner.

Chill with Phil! So I have this PlayStation 4...

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 09:30 AM PST

Hey guys, I know we are in the middle of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty right now, but something big happened. This new thing that all the kids are super excited about happened and somehow I have found myself knee deep in the next generation of video game consoles. And since I finally got my retail games in I thought it may be a good idea to share the new console with you all. Got questions about the UI? How pretty is Killzone? What makes Knack tick? Can you please stop playing Resogun and show us something else already? All these questions and more, for you to ask, on tonight's episode of Chill with Phil over on our very own Twitch Channel.

Goombas almost never made it into Super Mario Bros.

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 09:00 AM PST

For many, the Goomba was the very first enemy they ever encountered in a video game. The squishy mushroom-eque adversary of Mario has been famously trying to thwart the Italian plumber for over 25 years to little success -- though I'm sure we've  all died a few times in the opening moments of the Nintendo original.

But how well do you actually know the goomba? Did you know their Japanese name "kuribo" means chestnut? How about the fact that they almost never made it into the original Super Mario Bros.?

Take a look at this interesting video from the folks over at GameXplain to learn a little something about the stompable saboteur's history.

Sony expects PS4 price drops to be less frequent than PS3

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 08:00 AM PST

Releasing the PlayStation 4 at $399, with more standardized components, will likely keep the system from any kind of price drop in the near future according Sony's Shuhei Yoshida.

"Our hardware teams have chosen more standardized components to create PlayStation 4 and that's contributing to our launch price of $399 versus $599 for the PS3," Yoshida said. "Because we're already using more standardized components, the room for costs to come down might actually be slower than when we were starting with cutting edge stuff."

Sony's previous home console, the PlayStation 3, saw its first price drop, as well as internal redesign, a mere nine months after release to cut costs. The system notoriously launched at two price points (a 20gb and 60gb version) with the more expensive costing $599 and was later replaced with an 80gb version that removed full PS2 compatibility, the built-in flash card reader, and was bundled with Metal Gear Solid IV

If the PlayStation 4 is already at its most affordable price, for the foreseeable future, then it lends to believe that Sony will make their new console appear more attractive, to later adopters, by either increasing hard drive size or bundling software like the upcoming rumored inFamous: Second Son pack-in.

Catequesis is the next cute and creepy horror adventure

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 07:00 AM PST

Frequent readers of Destructoid already know how beloved Lone Survivor to many of our staff. It's an amazing example of how the interplay between simple iconography-based visuals, horrific concepts and powerlessness-focused gameplay can make for an experience that's as tense and disturbing as any big budget horror title.

The trend towards that formula seems to be picking up, with games like Death Road to Canada, Lisa, and Confederate Express. We can now add Catequesis to their ranks. The game has been in the works for a while, thought it has recently grown in size and scope. That's given its developers reason to start talking about it more publicly, which is good news for us. Seeing that their inspirations include two Davids (Lynch and Cronenberg), Deadly Premonition, and Jesus, provides plenty of cause for optimism.

While I may never get my idea sprite-based horror game (a Metal Slug 3 spin-off about surviving a blood vomiting zombie outbreak), it's still great to know that a lot of developers are headed in that direction.

System Seller: Pornhub pledges to fully support the PS4

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 05:00 AM PST

The PS4 has been out for a day or so now and people seem to be having a good time with the handful of launch titles. What about next week, when they've beaten all their ... PS4 games? What will they get a handful of then?

If you are one of these at-risk PS4 owners, and you're one of the few people in the world who enjoy videogames and pornography, then Pornhub has you covered. According to this probably NSFW tweet (the object in her mouth is hard to make out), Pornhub is the first porn site to fully support the PS4. This is the kind of 3rd party console support that matters in 2013.

As you (and Tim Curry) already know, the Wii U is also fully compatible with Pornhub and its related sites like Youporn and PornMD. What about Microsoft? Will they do what it takes to grasp onto the streaming porn audience, or will they let Xbox One lose that bone to the other dogs? Stay tuned to Destructoid for the latest on this evolving story.

Wii Fit U weekly weigh-in: Week 2

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 04:30 AM PST

[Every week, from early November through the end of 2013, I'll report on my use of Wii Fit U and how it benefits my health.]

Read Week 1's weigh-in here.

If you follow me on Twitter, you know that I'm always on the quest for good food. I'm one of those a-holes that tweets pictures of his food all day. After one post earlier this week, one of my followers asked me if I ever ate anything healthy. I told him that I wouldn't want to waste my life doing that.

But now I look at my stomach...

I was in New York all week, covering the PS4 launch as well as meeting with Microsoft on Xbox One. I'm in the city about 5 or 6 times a year, and when I'm there I eat a lot. So this week's weigh-in should be interesting.

Collector's Corner: Should you sell your current console?

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 04:00 AM PST

[Welcome to Collector's Corner -- a community-centric series headlined by Destructoid's Chris Carter and Bill Platt. We'll not only be looking at various topics within the collecting scene, but we'll also share our own experiences, and occasionally highlight community collections too! -- Chris & Bill]

With every "next" generation of consoles comes an important decision -- what are you going to do with your old systems? While the PS4 and Xbox One loom over our heads this month, most of us can't help but give our PS3s and Xbox 360s second glances, wondering if we should sell them off to help pay for an upgrade.

But in our experience, it only ends in regret. If you're thinking of selling off something you've created so many memories with, stop and think for a bit. Because in the end, you can wait.

Joining the likes of Samurai Showdown 2, SNK Playmore has ported another one of its iconic fighting games,The King of Fighters '97, to Android and iOS platforms.

Sony needs Nintendo to be very successful to thrive

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 02:00 AM PST

Speaking recently with IGN, Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Worldwide Studios, shared his thoughts on why he believes Nintendo needs to succeed for both the sake of Sony and traditional gaming.

“When you look at the situation around Nintendo that way, do you characterize Nintendo as our competition? I think in the bigger scale of things happening in the industry or tech or people’s lives, how they play games on what device, and how they start to learn to play games, I think Nintendo and us are pretty much in the same group, and we need Nintendo to be very successful to help induct as many consumers who like to play games with controllers, right?” Yoshida said.

It's interesting to consider that Sony and Nintendo are sort of unofficially working together to keep gamers playing games with controllers. As mobile games continue to grow, the accessibility parents have to sharing simple touch-based games from their phones with their children is becoming more prevalent.

For the first time, we face a potential new generation of gamers that  are growing up with systems that don't have any dedicated controllers and buttons. Yoshida plays Wii U with his daughters because of the "fun family friendly games." Does he consider Nintendo's consoles the perfect gateway into Sony's? Who knows for sure, but one thing for sure: it's hard to find a gamer that wasn't first raised on the house of Mario.

Meet Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate Arcade's new Gothic Lolita

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 01:00 AM PST

[Update: I've included a video showing off Marie in action, as well as screens, in the gallery below, of her alternate costume.]

Tecmo's Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate Arcade's most recent trailer gives a small glimpse of its newest fighter: a Gothic Lolita named Marie Rose.

The mysterious blonde specializes in the Russian martial arts known as systema -- a hand-to-hand combat technique that focuses on controlling the six body levers (neck, elbows, waist, knees, shoulders, and ankles) through striking and pressure point application.

Currently, the latest iteration of Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate is set to release in Japanese arcades this winter. While there is no confirmation that the latest edition to the game's roster will come to home consoles -- either in another version of the game or as DLC -- if Tecmo's track record for releasing additional content for the series is any indication, then I'm willing to bet we'll see Marie Rose in our homes soon enough.

Nintendo buys stake in mobile content company

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 12:00 AM PST

Nintendo stock rose over five percent on Thursday, following an announcement that the platform holder acquired a significant stake in Japanese telecommunications company Dwango. The 612,000 share purchase resulted in a healthy boost for the mobile content producer as well, inciting a 21 percent increase on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

While Nintendo uses Dwango's popular NicoNico platform as a means of promotion for its software, the company maintains it has no plans to distribute software on mobile devices. Nintendo spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa asserts the move stemmed from a personal request made by Dwango chairman Nobuo Kawakami, rather than any sort of machinations of targeting the smartphone market.
