Lilly Looking Through looks delightful

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 04:00 PM PDT

I love me a charming, colorful adventure game, so when I saw the trailer for Lilly Looking Through, I was hooked. Coming off the back of a successful Kickstarter that saw the game funded at the end of July, the title is now on Greenlight for your discerning votes.

Developed by Geeta Games, Lilly Looking Through is an adventure game "for all ages" and has you controlling the titular Lilly. Whilst story details aren't clear at this stage, the trailer gives a good sense of the shifting and varied environments the game has to offer. A demo is free to download for PC, Mac, and Linux on the developer's website which I'm sure to try.

Batman: Arkham Origins Collector's Edition looks awesome

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 03:00 PM PDT

So I'm pretty sick of Collector's Editions for the most part, but I have to admit I want this one for Batman: Arkham Origins. Largely because the Batman and Joker statue looks pretty awesome.

The package also contains an 80-page hardcover artbook, files on the eight assassins plus Black Mask's contract, the first appearance Batman skin, Deathstroke challenge pack that includes two challenge maps and two Deathstroke skins, and a 3D metal pack. That's for the both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, while the PS3 version will also include the Knightfall pack as an exclusive.

This will be available on October 25, 2013 in the United Kingdom, and will retail for £79.99. The North American Collector's Edition will be announced next week.

Nintendo files suit against Florida flashcart distributor

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 02:00 PM PDT

Piracy on the DS was kind of a big deal, which is why Nintendo has been taking measures to ensure that the same filth doesn't infect the 3DS ecosystem. The 3D handheld has remained more or less untainted thus far, but the only thing stopping hackers from breaking down those barricades is time. It's in Nintendo's best interest to go on an early offensive.

Earlier today, Nintendo announced that it has filed suit against a South Florida-based website called HackYourConsole.com. In addition to selling various brands of DS flashcarts, the site is also accepting pre-orders for the Gateway 3DS, the very first 3DS flashcart. Further firmware updates will likely kill the Gateway, sure, but Nintendo is not about to let this business stay in business.

The press release also repeats the words of Renegade Kid's Jools Watsham: "Piracy on the Nintendo DS system has a huge impact on games sales. It can affect everyone involved, including the many honest players out there. If independent studios, like ours, are unable to recoup the money they invest into game development, through the sales of their games, we will unfortunately see fewer independent games developed in the future."

For people who argue "but what if I only want it for homebrew," we all know what these devices are primarily intended for. I understand people's desire to use the handheld they've purchased however they see fit, but these kinds of devices do nothing to improve the health of the machine. And with the 3DS only just starting to see a global turnaround, it doesn't need anything impeding its progress.

DuckTales: The coolest lunchbox in the universe

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 01:06 PM PDT

I just got the coolest lunchbox in the universe in the mail. Really, a DuckTales lunchbox is good enough to win me over (thanks, Capcom!), but what was inside was as good as gold. Under a bunch of shredded money I found a golden DuckTales NES cartridge. These babies are numbered (my certificate reads 113 out of 150 total), so I'm guessing these are pretty rare.

This is, of course, to promote the upcoming release of DuckTales Remastered

I'll dig out my NES tomorrow, but from what I hear, the cartridge works perfectly. It looks brand new.

Arma III's campaign will be released as free DLC

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 01:00 PM PDT

Bohemia Interactive plans on releasing Arma III's campaign in three free episodic downloadable content releases. The first episode is called Survive, and will be released within a month of the main game's actual release. The following two episodes, Adapt and Win, will come out a few months later.

“This was not a decision we made lightly," project lead Joris-Jan van 't Land stated. "As game creators, we love developing and playing through campaigns so, to those awaiting ours, we say: sorry for the delay. After talking a lot about a focus on quality over the last year, it simply did not feel right to compromise now. Rather than pushing back the entire game, we launch this year with an awesome package – a splendid kick off for the Arma III experience.”

I feel like most fans of the Arma series are mainly interested in the multiplayer anyway. It's certainly a smarter decision doing it like this rather than pulling a Battlefield 3 with its horribly rushed campaign.

Two Worlds II and Oddworld are your daily deals

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 12:00 PM PDT

The middle of the week usually brings a slight lull to the deals we're hunting for but there's still a few new bargains to be had. This Horror Fest Bundle caught my eye, offering Steam keys for Scratches, Vigil: Blood Bitterness, and Avencast: Rise of the Mage for just £0.79/$1.01.

GOG.com has one off promo on Two Worlds II: Epic Edition, knocking $12 off the regular price down to just $7.99 and on Steam, your daily deal is the wonderful music game, Audiosurf which is just £1.49/$2.49. I didn't realize Big Picture mode had been added to that game so I'll need to give that a try.

Indie Week continues on GamersGate with new daily deals like Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath for £3.98/$4.98, Krater is reduced to £2.49/$3.74, Age of Conquest is just £3.73/$4.98, and Beware Planet Earth is is a paltry £2.38/3.40.

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 11:30 AM PDT

A new system update for the PlayStation Vita has added a number of new features. The biggest being the ability to quickly access PlayStation Network servers so you can now upload/download save data from the cloud, so long as you have a PlayStation Plus subscription.

Update 2.60 has also added shortcuts to your network settings to quickly access things like your WiFi setting, plus stream music and videos from your PlayStation 3 or PC without having to copy the content over first. System update news is so exciting!

Contest: Win a signed postcard from Nobuo Uematsu!

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 11:00 AM PDT

Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu is an amazing man. In addition to his musical prowess, he's also just released his first e-book, titled Blik-0 1946. The book looks fantastic and is set to Uematsu's own original score, and you can buy it right here if you'd like!

When our own Jayson Napolitano talked to him at SDCC last month, he was kind enough to sign three Blik-0 1946 postcards to give away to the Destructoid community. Sweet! For a chance at one of these collector's items, just leave a comment below. You have until this Friday, August 9 at 11:59 PM Pacific to enter. Oh, and we'll mail these to anyone in the world!

Good luck!

Live show: Divinity: Dragon Commander

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 10:30 AM PDT

[Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.]

Yeesh, how do I even begin to explain Divinity: Dragon Commander to someone that's never heard of it before? Well, let's start with the easy part first. The game has a jetpack wearing-dragon in it that you control, and an undead princess that you're able to marry if you can get on her good side. If that alone has you a bit curious, just wait until I try to explain what type of game this is. Really the best I can do is to tell you to imagine something that is one part RISK, one part real-time strategy, one part role-playing game, one part Panzer Dragoon, one part political sim, and one part collectible card game to boot. Well, something like that anyways.

If that sounds like a mess of styles that would never work together, trust me, I was thinking the same thing until I played Dragon Commander. While the various parts are nothing mind blowing on their own, everything comes together to form a truly entertaining and unique experience. This is one of those games that you really have to see in action for yourself to fully understand what it's all about, so be sure to come by and check it out tonight at Dtoid.TV!

Nintendo reveals combined sales of ALL hardware, software

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT

Nintendo's latest fiscal report is not all that hot. But the general annual report does a much better job of putting a positive spin on the company's present and future.

The first dozen or so pages of the report are incredible collages and promotional pieces that would work quite well as computer wallpaper. It's almost as though Nintendo realized that fans and media outlets would be among the most eager to read the report and decided to give them a little something extra. I especially love the page with all the logos for every single piece of hardware Nintendo released over the past three decades.

The two most notable pages reveal the total combined hardware and software sales across almost every Nintendo console and handheld as of March 31, 2013. From the Famicom (NES) to the Wii U, 268.97 million units of hardware and 2195.09 million units of software were sold. From the Game Boy to the 3DS, 385.15 million units of hardware and 1907.25 million units of software were sold. These totals include all SKUs as well as bundled and digital software.

What can we draw from this data? Despite handheld hardware selling much better, consoles are much better software drivers. It is interesting to note that a certain failed virtual reality machine was left out of these considerations, though I wonder if Nintendo factored in hardware attachments like the Famicom Disk System and the 64DD, both which had exclusive software.

Black Ops II 'Origins' trailer shows off giant robot

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 09:30 AM PDT

We know this trailer is for Call of Duty: Black Ops II, but that's about it. Featuring the phrase "Every story has a beginning...and an end," the video seems to hint at a new Zombies map with a giant killer robot for reasons that don't need to be explained. Because, y'know, killer robot. My attention is all yours.

Whatever this content ends up being, I have to hand it to Treyarch for being unafraid to have a little fun with its games. It's ridiculous, and kind of dumb, but sometimes that's exactly what you need most. Nothing wrong with that.

Amazon.co.uk launches digital game sales

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT

I've long looked at Amazon.com's more expansive videogame selection with envy compared to the selection at Amazon.co.uk; digital titles were the thing I wanted most and now Amazon in the UK has finally stepped into the ring.

The online giant now offers digital games for both PC and Mac, as well as selling Microsoft Points which seems kinda redundant, to be honest. There's a great selection of launch deals including Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon for £6.99, Borderlands 2 and Civilization V for £9.99 each, and Trials Evolution Gold for £8.49.

Mark of the Ninja Special Edition DLC out next week

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 08:30 AM PDT

On Friday, August 16, we'll have a good reason to boot up Mark of the Ninja again. That's when Klei Entertainment's masterful stealth game is getting its Special Edition DLC on Steam and Xbox Live Arcade for $4.99 / 400 Microsoft Points, it's been announced.

Personally, I'm most interested in the in-game developer commentary, but there's also another level, two more items, and a new playstyle which features the option to perform non-lethal takedowns. Can't wait to get insight into the team's design decisions.

Xbox One Game DVR feature exclusive to Xbox Live Gold

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 08:15 AM PDT

Yesterday, we heard that the Xbox One's Game DVR -- which records your last five minutes of game time onto the console's hard drive -- will capture in 720p at 30 frames per second. In other disappointing and not entirely unexpected news, it's come to light that this neat little addition will, similar to other new features, be gated behind Xbox Live Gold.

Because of course it will.

How to watch Valve's 'The International' Dota2 tournament

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Though it may sound silly, it's not easy to understand all there is to Valve's "The International." It's even hard to understand just what the hell is happening on screen while watching a Dota 2 match. That's why I've put together this guide: to hopefully ease new players and spectators into the world of competitive Dota 2. Even if you have no interest whatsoever in the game, it's hard not to get caught up in the excitement.

You thought EVO was full of hype? Get ready for The International.

Saints Row IV Romance Options - Now Bloody Playing!

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 07:30 AM PDT

It is with no small amount of delight that I bring you a new episode of Now Bloody Playing -- featuring an early look at the world of Saints Row IV. In this video, I walk you through all the teased "Romance Options" found in the game. It's like Mass Effect, but with more fun-making.

It's a neat tip of the hat to BioWare games and the sometimes cynical way in which "romance" is set up, and it also lets you pretty much bang whoever you want. That is always a plus.

Enjoy, but of course be aware that it's a little bit spoilerish.

Platinum Games discusses relationship with Nintendo

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 07:00 AM PDT

Nintendo has enlisted Platinum Games in its endeavor to provide the Wii U with unique exclusives such as The Wonderful 101 in order to entice the ever-elusive core gamer. The match may seem like an odd one, considering Nintendo's family-friendly mien and Platinum's history of creating edgy action titles.

Speaking with Gamasutra, however, Bayonetta 2 director Yusuke Hashimoto and producer Atsushi Inaba had nothing but kind things to say about Nintendo and its impact on the development process, describing the partnership as a "great experience."

"They're not standing in our way," Hashimoto said of the platform holder. "Nintendo has been more as an observer, and really good to just let us do our work, but to point out some minor things throughout the course of development."

"It's almost as if they are a very critical player that can sit back and give us great advice on how we're creating the game," he said. That isn't to say that the relationship doesn't have its unique pressures, however.

"Working with Nintendo, one thing that comes out of that is that we're not able to cover up weaknesses in the core gameplay by making the graphics prettier or adding cutscenes, or whatever. The concern, first and foremost, is the core of the game and the quality of the gameplay. They really have our back in that sense. And that's actually a little bit unnerving, working with people who are such perfectionists in that sense."

Given that Bayonetta is so focused on gameplay as the highlight of the experience, perhaps the pairing isn't as strange as it initially may seem. If Platinum Games is trying to create the best follow-up it possibly can, Nintendo certainly seems like a good choice of partners. Few have mastered the art of reiteration more so than they.

Sources say Left 4 Dead 3 leak is the real deal

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 06:30 AM PDT

Recent evidence has pointed to Left 4 Dead 3's existence, as if such a thing were ever truly in question. Of course there's going to be another one, eventually. A photograph of a change log that mentioned "L4D3" and "Source 2" taken during a Valve studio tour has been deemed legitimate by multiple sources who spoke with Rock, Paper, Shotgun.

One of the outlet's anonymous sources also suggested we collectively take another look at a leak from earlier this year which referenced both Left 4 Dead 3 and Source 2 as well as -- wait for it, because that's all we know what to do any more -- Half-Life 3. This doesn't really change anything until we get some actual announcements, but, good to know.

Free-to-play MOBA Dead Island: Epidemic announced

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 06:00 AM PDT

It sounds like parody, doesn't it? The seemingly unstoppable Dead Island series is moving in a strange new direction with Epidemic, a free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena game for PC made public today in an oh-so-brief announcement.

The full reveal is happening in a couple weeks at gamescom, but Deep Silver has said that three teams -- not the typical two for the genre -- will fight to survive. The game is said to "feature all the trademark elements that are part of a Dead Island experience."

There's also a bare-bones website with a newsletter sign-up. Not that I'm expecting much of anything from Epidemic, but I'm beyond curious to see what this thing actually looks like.

Free Animal Crossing Plaza out now on Wii U

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 05:30 AM PDT

While it's no Super Mario Bros. 3 on 3DS, darn it, the newly-announced Animal Crossing Plaza is cool in its own right. As demonstrated during this morning's Nintendo Direct, this free app gives series fans a place to congregate on Wii U. Images taken in Animal Crossing: New Leaf can be imported to the Plaza, and custom designs can be easily shared via QR codes.

Interestingly, the app is only going to run through the end of 2014 after which point Nintendo will shut it down. Better go try it out now before you forget, then. In other AC news, exclusive items for New Leaf will be available every two weeks at any Nintendo Zone location. This starts on August 11 with a pumpkin pie. While at a Nintendo Zone, simply head to your in-game post office and ask about a present. How quaint.

Review: Mario & Luigi: Dream Team

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 05:00 AM PDT

It's hard not to love the Mario & Luigi series. A simple set of role-playing games that have, over the course of its installments, given us some of the best new characters in the Mario universe, it's a light and often quite funny franchise. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team is the fourth in the set, and it retains much of what makes the series so difficult to dislike.

That said, Dream Team is perhaps the most formulaic game in the series to date, despite the addition of a new "Dream World" and the changes it brings to the battle system. After following the wonderful Bowser's Inside Story, this latest chapter is a less surprising, less amusing, altogether less endearing prospect than previous entries in the series.

That doesn't mean it's bad, though. After all, it's following some damn fine performances.

id co-founder John Carmack joins Oculus VR as CTO

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 04:30 AM PDT

When you think of id Software, you think of studio co-founder John Carmack. It's wild to imagine the company without him and, for a brief moment this morning when the news came in that he'd joined Oculus VR to work on the virtual-reality Oculus Rift headset "full time," I didn't know what to think. Yes, the renowned programmer of games like Doom and Quake has taken a position as chief technology officer, it's true -- but he's not leaving id behind.

Carmack's take on the situation is that his "time division is now Oculus over Id over Armadillo [Aerospace]," while id Software says he isn't leaving the studio and "will continue to provide leadership for our games in development." In a press release, Carmack noted that "The dream of VR has been simmering in the background for decades, but now, the people and technologies are finally aligning to allow it to reach the potential we imagined."

Over on the Kickstarter page for the Oculus Rift, he also wrote a message to the community which reads: "Now is a special time. I believe that VR will have a huge impact in the coming years, but everyone working today is a pioneer. The paradigms that everyone will take for granted in the future are being figured out today; probably by people reading this message. It's certainly not there yet. There is a lot more work to do, and there are problems we don't even know about that will need to be solved, but I am eager to work on them. It's going to be awesome!"

Considering how vocal he's been about virtual reality and how his support of the Rift in its early days gave the headset that extra push it needed, it makes sense that Carmack would take on this additional role. Even with all of the unknowns, it's hard not to feel a bit more confident about the future of virtual reality with him on board.

Attack on Titan anime gets a proper 3DS game

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 04:15 AM PDT

If you're into watching anime, you may know that Attack on Titan is the new hotness this season. The story of a bunch of angry kids chopping up funny-faced giants while using weird Spider-Man grappling hooks has captured the minds of many a fan. Unfortunately, the game offerings for the popular series haven't quite been up to snuff, mainly covered by fan productions and browser-based titles. Until now.

Spike Chunsoft (makers of 999, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, and Conception) are developing an Attack on Titan game for the 3DS, due sometime this year. And that's about it for information, though additional reveals are promised by September 9th.

If I had a 3DS I'd be pretty stoked, though if you ask me my ideal Attack on Titan videogame would play  a lot like Spider-Man 2 for the PlayStation 2, but with more swords and anime goodness.

A bunch of titles coming to Nintendo's Virtual Console

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 02:30 AM PDT

Nintendo has announced today that a number of games will be coming to the North American Virtual Console, most notably the ultra rare shoot 'em up Summer Carnival '92: Recca. Recca was known to be one of the biggest technical achievements at the time, and copies now go for upwards of $400 or more.

It hit the Japanese 3DS Virtual Console late last year, and now, it's coming here with the timeline of "soon." As a shmup fan, I'm really excited to try it out. In other news, Donkey Kong (NES) is coming soon, as is the great Wario Land 3, which is hitting the 3DS VC on August 29th. Super Mario Bros. 3 (3DS, Wii U) and Tecmo Bowl are coming later this year.

In today's Nintendo Direct, Satoru Iwata was proud to announce yet another development in the "Year of Luigi" campaign -- Luigi is confirmed for the 3DS and Wii U Smash Bros. game that's currently in development.

Considering Luigi was one of my mains in Melee, I'm really excited for this news. It's not like we really doubted he would be in anyway, but still, it's great news, as he's an excellent addition to the franchise.

Rayman Legends Wii U to feature Mario and Luigi costumes

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 02:10 AM PDT

During today's Nintendo Direct, Satoru Iwata confirmed that Rayman Legends will feature exclusive Mario and Luigi costumes for Rayman and Globox. This is basically Nintendo's answer to the platform specific costumes of Splinter Cell and Assassin's Creed (although the latter is still coming to the Wii U).

Rayman Legends is still thankfully on track for an August 30th release date in Europe, and September 3rd in North America.

She'll be the sixth DLC character, after Lobo, Batgirl, Scorpion, Zod, and Martian Manhunter.

Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons Achievement Guide

Posted: 07 Aug 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons is an anomaly when it comes to Achievements. Not a single one will be unlocked through normal gameplay. However, every last one takes only seconds to get and isn't dependent on anything other than traveling a bit off the beaten path.

No, there's nothing strenuous about this list, but most of the Achievements are pretty cryptic in their description. If you're stuck on some or simply want to take all of the mystery out of it, I've put together a guide to unlocking all of them in the order that they appear. I've tried to keep it as spoiler-free as possible, but you probably shouldn't check it out if you want the purest experience possible.

That being said, 400/400 Gamerscore is right around the corner!

Volition weren't fans of THQ's porn star marketing push

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 10:00 PM PDT

Volition's associate producer Kate Nelson spoke with Edge Online about all things Saints Row, and specifically brought up how the team weren't fans of THQ's marketing push using porn stars.

“I did not always love how much THQ put an emphasis on porn stars,” Kate told Edge. “In Saints Row 2 and Saints Row 3 there was an emphasis on the penthouse girls, and earlier Tera Patrick. I think it’s important in marketing games to make sure that the essence of the game is what’s being marketed, and I think the porn star angle didn’t really fit in with what Saints Row is at heart, which is a parody. We like to poke fun.”

It was especially THQ's use of porn star Tera Patrick that bothered the team, specifically how she was credited as a "special producer."

“Saying that someone who had no industry experience was in a role that is sexualised as a producer of our project, or saying the penthouse girls are our QA staff – I just…I can see the humour in that angle of promotion but for me that’s the line where it gets into reality."

Also for those of you that care about the soundtrack, we can expect 80 minutes of original music on top of seven radio stations sporting over 100 tracks in Saints Row IV

Review: Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 05:01 PM PDT

It all starts innocently enough with a pair of brothers making their way through town. Sure, there's a task at hand, but urgency isn't an issue. It should be, but it isn't. Soaking in the warm glow of the sun and playing with some bunnies feel like more pertinent matters.

Before long, it's not apparent where the siblings are, but it's obvious that they took an unexpected turn toward Crazyville. Thinking back to just a few hours prior, it's remarkable that this is even the same adventure -- how far things have come.

That's when it hits you. Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons isn't about the destination; it's about the journey, cliché be damned. And, oh, what a journey it is.

The Daily Hotness: Give me MediEvil 3

If I have one bone to pick with Sony, it's that I've been waiting over a decade for MediEvil 3. I half-heartedly joked Sir Daniel Fortesque's appearance in PlayStation: All Stars Battle Royale could lend the hilarious, endearing series an arm in finally getting the sequel it deserves. With the announcement that Bluepoint is bringing a Sony classic to current hardware, my heart is a flutter. I'd commit all kinds of skullduggery to make it true, though there are obviously a lot of games ripe to be brought back from the dead. None so charming and valiant, though.

Today, Chris Carter delivered a quick guide to the excellent Dragon's Crown, we launched a contest to get Dragon's Crown and a bunch of extras, Hidden Path unveiled the new, amazing-looking Windborne, we had some Tales cosplay for you to peep, Hamza hunted sharks in an Assassin's Creed preview, and more!
