Kenichi Ebina wows the crowd on America's Got Talent

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 04:00 PM PDT

Normally you wouldn't find content related to a show like America's Got Talent on Destructoid, but I think this one deserves a special mention. On tonight's semi-finals round, Japanese dancer Kenichi Ebina did something different -- he performed a dance in which he fought various videogame characters, all the way to a "final boss round."

But what's amazing about this act, as judge Howie Mandel points out, is that Kenichi actually performs both the live version on the show, and the characters in the "game." Not only does this require a ton of precision (which he nails), but the concept itself is incredible.

Multiple judges called it the best thing they've seen on the show, ever. I'd easily agree.

Square Enix reduces losses but still in the red

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 03:30 PM PDT

To say that Square Enix appears to be in a confusing position would be putting it mildly. It seems that includes the company's financial situation, as the publisher posted its financial results for the second quarter of 2013 and whilst the losses are reduced, the company still booked a ¥1.6 billion ($16.2 million) loss.

The company has "implemented a change in its development policy, and conducted a comprehensive review on work-in-progress game titles for the three-month period ended June 30, 2013." There's no word on whether this review will affect any games currently in development but it seems likely Square Enix will keep trucking on as is, still developing on consoles, PC, and the mobile market.

Ten By Eight is Japanese ESPN that'll put you in jail

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 03:00 PM PDT

Puzzle games can be so great. Even those guys who are all like "Gunz an multiplayur orr GTFO" can't deny the simple joys of Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo or Planet Puzzle League. That said, no one knows why puzzle games can be so great or so bad.

This mystery kept young Tim Rogers (of Action Button Entertainment) up at night. "Why the heck are good puzzle games so enthralling, and why are bad puzzle games so dang boring?" he'd ask himself, staring into the darkness, "Most of them are just moving colored squares around a rectangular playfield, yet some are genius and others are garbage. How can I conquer the puzzle of the puzzle game design puzzle?!?"

Luckily for us, Tim's late night pondering paid off. Those haunting questions lead him and his team of upstart game developers (at Action Button Entertainment) to create Ten By Eight (available now on PS Vita and other PS Mobile compatible devices). Their goal was to design a game that felt endlessly and effortless fun forever. ZiGGURAT is proof that they have some skill in achieving that pursuit, but can lightening strike twice?

If you've played Ten by Eight, come back and tell us if it's so great or so bad.

Oculus Rift and Virtuix Omni used in virtual walk on Mars

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 02:30 PM PDT

If the slew of recent and upcoming games on the red planet are any indication, there is a significant amount of interest in exploring Earth's second-closest neighbor. Nobody knows this better than the engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who have put together a virtual tour of Mars using the latest tech gadgets alongside images from the Curiosity rover and terrain data collected via satellite.

It started with the Oculus Rift headset being used to view panoramic images taken by Curiosity, and eventually led to using the Virtuix Omni to simulate an actual walk on the surface of Mars. Sadly, watching a YouTube video of somebody else taking a virtual tour is probably the closest most of us will ever get to actually traveling to Mars. At the very least, we can all sit around listening to "The Case for Mars" while hoping that JPL makes this project publicly available at some point.

Japan Expo to host Ace Attorney art director

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 12:15 PM PDT

[As originally posted on Japanator]

With the first North American event set to take place later this month, Japan Expo has announced their Video Game Guest of Honor for the show -- freelance illustrator Tatsuro Iwamoto, perhaps best known for his role as the art director for the much-beloved Ace Attorney series. Iwamoto's designs really define the look and the feel of those games, and I couldn't imagine how any of them would look without him.

'No one is doing what we're doing,' says thatgamecompany

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 12:00 PM PDT

In a New Yorker piece covering Journey, Flower, and Flow developer thatgamecompany, the publication got a few more tidbits out of co-founder Jenova Chen regarding the team's next game. In line with his prior comments about it being a "natural evolution," Chen referred to the project as "the bastard child" of the aforementioned titles and compared it to seeing E.T. for the first time. Themes like self-reflection and nostalgia are said to be present.

"A lot of people asked us why Journey didn't let them play with friends or family, and obviously we had a reason -- because that would have defeated the purpose of the game," said Chen. "But for a game to be truly be accessible, to both children and adults and to men and women, it has to allow people to play with the ones they love." The new game will do exactly that.

Conservatively, this is still two years off and thatgamecompany hasn't pinned down how players will interact with one another (though a system of non-verbal communication will be implemented). Regardless, I'm very much looking forward to it. After attending E3 2013, Chen said he was "proud to see that no one is doing what we're doing, but also worried because I know why. It's risky."

Peek into the development of Final Fantasy VI

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 11:30 AM PDT

Final Fantasy VI on the Super Nintendo marked a grand change in direction and tone for the series. The shift wasn't as noticeable out West, which didn't receive the second, third, and fifth games and thus didn't have much of a foundation to build expectations on. Japanese players, however, were surprised to find a steampunk world drastically different than the pure fantasy settings they'd been accustomed to, along with a greater focus on individual characterization.

As part of its "The Making Of" feature series, Edge magazine interviewed Yoshinori Kitase, FFVI co-director in charge of event planning. He explains that each of the character vignettes were conceived by various team members and he helped tie them together -- Kitase himself fleshed out the stories for Celes and Gau. He also goes into detail about how the team decided on having each of the principal cast be a lead character in turn, giving players an opportunity to hop into their shoes and learn their backstories one by one.

Despite the demanding debug phase towards the end, development of Final Fantasy VI lasted only one year, and it was able to launch on schedule and within budget. My favorite nugget comes straight from Kitase: "I miss the limitations of making games in those days. The cartridge capacity was so much smaller, of course, and therefore the challenges were that much greater. But nowadays you can do almost anything in a game. It's a paradox, but this can be more creatively limiting than having hard technical limitations to work within. There is a certain freedom to be found in working within strict boundaries, one clearly evident in Final Fantasy VI."

The Square of today could definitely learn a thing or two from its younger self, wouldn't you say? Check out the full article below for more wonderful insight.

What the? There's a Pilotwings stage in Smash Bros.?

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 11:00 AM PDT

This screenshot from the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. was taken by director Masahiro Sakurai and uploaded to the game's official site today. Does it look familiar? That's the island from Lesson 3 of Pilotwings for the Super Nintendo -- in other words, one of those classic locations permanently burned into your memory if you're a fan.

Apparently, it's a stage in Smash. I mean, what else could it be? My guess is that the actual fighting itself will take place at a higher altitude. Either way, cool game for Nintendo to highlight.

Review: Sky Tourist

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT

Sometimes, you'll come across a game that has no business on a mobile device, utilizing a shoe-horned control scheme that was seemingly crammed into somewhere it didn't belong. Even still, it's not hard to find a game that truly works best on the platform, with touch controls that are executed quite flawlessly -- the iOS-exclusive Sky Tourist included.

But as we all know, good controls don't make an entire game.

Ghost Song is like Super Metroid, but with ghosts

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 09:30 AM PDT

There has been a resurgence of great Metroidvania titles coming out in recent times, but none have been quite as, well, heavily inspired by the Metroid series as Ghost Song: A Journey of Hope. Take a look at the Kickstarter video above and you'll see it too. Dark, alien planet? Check. Eerie, atmospheric music? Check. Creature that demonstrates an ability? Check. Shooting doors to open them? Gigantic boss monsters? Storytelling without cutscenes? Check, check, and check.

Ghost Song wears its inspiration on its sleeve, with designer Matt White proudly citing Super Metroid as a clear influence on his design perspective. What isn't quite as obvious from the trailer is his other inspiration: Dark Souls. Though the game isn't intended to be punishingly difficult, it will take some cues from the cult classic. Apparently, this is something the public desperately wants; the campaign reached over a third of its funding goal within the first twelve hours.

Paradox and Fatshark team up again for War of the Vikings

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Fatshark is applying the War of the Roses framework to a related -- but standalone, it should be pointed out -- combat game called War of the Vikings. Yes, the name pretty much says it all. You in? Skirmishes will take place during ninth- and tenth-century England with support for up to 64 players at once. There's also talk of a Pitched Arena mode where 32 players fight without respawns. Those hardcore modes are always so tense.

War of the Vikings is releasing sometime in the first quarter of 2014 and will similarly be published by Paradox Interactive. Fatshark is already accepting alpha sign-ups, if you're interested. After the last War game, I'm curious to see how the team can improve on the formula.

Dragon Age Inquisition is September's Game Informer cover

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Dragon Age: Inquisition will be the cover of September's issue of Game Informer but you can also take a sneak peek of some alpha-build gameplay in the trailer above. Whilst it's still early in development, BioWare has revealed some details about the story: players will reform the Inquisition following the breakdown between the existing factions after demonic entities invade.

I'm glad BioWare is taking its time for the third game in the series, especially after Dragon Age II's obviously rushed development cycle. What I'm interested in is the split in the PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 and PS4/Xbox One versions. The studio promises a larger world and the return of more playable races and those are two things that have got my interest straight away.

The next Nintendo Direct is happening tomorrow

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 07:30 AM PDT

Tomorrow's Nintendo Direct is scheduled for 7:00am Pacific and North America, Europe, and Japan are all getting some love. For this presentation, the topic of choice will be 3DS and Wii U games that are launching later this year. I'm hoping we'll hear about some of those 20-30 indie games that are supposed to grace the Wii U eShop in 2013.

Here's the official site where you can catch the Direct. Alternatively, check in with Destructoid as I'm sure Chris will be wide awake and covering any major news to come out of the event.

Bluepoint is bringing a 'Sony classic' to current-gen

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 06:30 AM PDT

The team behind Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, God of War Collection, ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection, and the PlayStation Vita port of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale says it is "currently bringing a Sony classic to current game systems." That's our cue to freak out and list every possible game we'd like to see receive such a treatment. And ... go!

Bluepoint Games also states that the studio is "teaming [its] technical expertise with an industry leading developer on a next-gen, blockbuster franchise." Another intriguing prospect for the Austin, Texas-based company. On behalf of Jim, I'd like to cast my non-existent "Sony classic" vote for MediEvil. It's a tough call to make, though.

These Tales inspired cosplays will soothe your soul

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 06:00 AM PDT

It only took two years for the thirteenth flagship title in the Tales series to reach western shores, but now that Tales of Xillia has finally arrived what better way to celebrate than with a collection of some fantastic cosplay traversing the series' lineage.

From the PlayStation classic Tales of Destiny, to the soon to be remastered Tales of Symphonia, all the way to the present with Tales of Xillia; there definitely is no shortage of breathtaking cosplays to admire. To narrow it down we've limited this week's entries to a few characters from the most prominent games in the series. Even this was near impossible.

So let us know below which one is your favorite. And as always, if you have any spectacular cosplays you'd like to show off here, send them in to tips@destructoid.com.

Until next time!

Create your Saints Row IV character now

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 05:30 AM PDT

The Inauguration Station for Saints Row IV is out now on Steam and Xbox 360 with a PlayStation Network release set for Tuesday, August 13 (or tomorrow, if you're in the UK). This is the game's standalone character creator, which lets you build your own custom president now and import them into the full game. You can even download your Saints Row: The Third character. My metallic samurai man is going to the White House!

Love when they do this. I appreciate character customization, but at the same time there's this balance you have to strike between getting all of the facial features just right and actually playing the game you've been dying to get your hands on for months if not years.

Xbox One records games in 720p at 30 frames per second

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 05:00 AM PDT

Microsoft has collaborated with IGN to do an Ask Me Anything concerning the Xbox One because it's come to that. In it, someone -- I'm guessing former Destructoid editor Maurice Tan -- wondered if it'll be possible to earn separate Xbox 360 and Xbox One Achievements for the same game (it will be). Funny how that's the kind of question that gets through.

Corporate VP Marc Whitten did divulge a bit more about game footage recording on the platform. The Game DVR captures in 720p at 30 frames per second, which is a good thing to know going in. He also promises that gamerpics have been upgraded from 64x64 to a full 1080p, allowing "full-body HD gamerpics" using your Xbox avatar. Glad that's settled.

Catapult for Hire sends its jetpack bunnies to PAX

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 04:30 AM PDT

At first glance, Catapult for Hire isn't much to look at. Developer PixelMEGA describes it as a "mix of gameplay that hearkens back to N64 era fun," and the influence is clearly there in the graphics. However, if you watch the video above, you can see a really unique set of ideas that makes absolutely no sense in the best way possible. Attach a rocket to a rabbit, fire it from your catapult, and use it to explore new areas. Then, drop a lure into the water and catch a fish. What?

Designer Tyrone Henrie cites Pilotwings, The Legend of Zelda: the Ocarina of Time, and Worms as influences for his ballistics-based exploration game. Yeah, I can see that. It's also giving me a bit of a Kirby's Dream Course vibe, but perhaps that's just me. Catapult for Hire will be at PAX Prime 2013, so you can expect some hands-on coverage of it soon.

It'll probably be five years before Street Fighter V

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 04:00 AM PDT

The recent unveiling of Ultra Street Fighter IV should have been sign enough that, for better or worse, we'll be stuck with the game for a while yet. Those itching for a fresh new installment should look at the series' release history, according to producer Tomoaki Ayano.

"Game development is a long and arduous process," he told VG247. "If you look at the history of the series, it took six years to go from Street Fighter II to Street Fighter III, and nine years to go from Street Fighter III to Street Fighter IV. Purely based on that it would probably take us until the year 2018 before Street Fighter V comes out. So I hope everyone will play Ultra Street Fighter IV for a long time."

Well, when you put it like that. Fine. In all seriousness, I wonder if we'll see any other major fighting games from Capcom in the next few years to tide us over. You'd hope so.

Harpoon sharks and explore the sea in Assassin's Creed IV

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 03:00 AM PDT

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag takes us to the age of pirates, and because of that Ubisoft's Singapore studio was tasked with creating the full on ocean simulation. I spoke with lead designer Sebastien Berton who walked me through four of the major new features we can expect to go along with all this.

First up, there's harpooning! Yes, you can go throw a bunch of harpoons into sharks, you monsters. You're rewarded for the wildlife you hunt, as animals will get you vital upgrades for your character similar to Far Cry 3's system. With the sharks in particular, you'll first hook into them with a harpoon tied to a rope. One connected, you'll be pulled through the ocean and you have throw more spears at them until they finally die.

Next we learned a little more about how the underwater system works. It's a first for the series, and everything in the water is a threat to you while you search for treasure. You have to find pockets of air to stay under longer, and sharks can mess you up really easily as you can't fight back.

Sebastien also briefly touched on hidden caves players can find, and how the fort system has been upgraded in Black Flag. Check out the interview for the full details, and check out our past previews for more on the next big Assassin's Creed.

XSEED registers domain linked with Senran Kagura series

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 02:00 AM PDT

XSEED once referred to the prospect of publishing Senran Kagura as "a scary proposition." With concerns over how the series' subject matter would be perceived in more conservative cultures like the United States, a Western release seemed like a long shot at best. And yet, it looks like the localization house might have worked up the courage to carry out such an undertaking.

The publisher recently registered a domain name referencing a locale from the games, the Hanzo National Academy. Furthermore, the company seems to be teasing something via Twitter. A tan colored square? What could it be? Perhaps it's totally unrelated, but maybe, just maybe, XSEED is frying up a fat stack of pancakes.

Turtle Beach acquires Parametric Sound Corporation

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 01:30 AM PDT

Turtle Beach, makers of fine gaming headsets, has just announced plans to acquire Parametric Sound Corporation in a reverse merger. The transaction is scheduled to close before the end of the year. This small San Diego-bawed sound company sits on audio technology that Turtle Beach feels could further their audio products.

This morning's press release says that Parametric's audio tech provides an immersive audio experience that existing speakers cannot match. The company also brings expertise in digital signal processing that will fit nicely with gaming products.

Most interesting is their HyperSound directional audio technology, which delivers audio in a directional beam using thin sound emitters. It's used now in retail signage, but they hope to put it to use in videogame audio, computers, mobile devices, and in home audio.

Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- gets some more character reveals

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 01:00 AM PDT

The Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- website has updated since the confirmation of Millia Rage, and four new series regulars are now officially joining the fray. Chipp, May, and Venom look fairly familiar, but Potemkin has gotten a complete design rework, to the point where he doesn't even look the same.

Although the artwork and character designs are as beautiful as ever, I can't wait to see them in action -- and since May is one of my mains, I'm excited to see those HD dolphins and whales. Don't forget to take part in the game's first location test if you happen to be in Japan on August 12th.

MSI unveils the world's thinnest 17-inch gaming laptop

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 10:00 PM PDT

MSI Computer Corp has unveiled the GS70, the world's thinnest and lightest 17-inch gaming laptop at just .85 inches! It features a fourth generation Intel Core i7 processor, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M, and features a 1TB or 750GB HDD depending on the configuration you want to get.

The 1TB HDD version is going for $1999.99, while the 750GB one is $1799.99. Both models also include 16GB of DDR3L memory, four USB 3.0 ports, three audio jacks, 720p HD camera, and support for up to three external displays via HDMI and mDP ports.

All in all, it weighs 5.73 pounds, and gives the Razer Blade Pro a run for its money. Still, the Razer Blade (14-inch) is the true thinnest laptop in general, but the GS70 is now the thinnest 17-inch model laptop. Plus MSI's most expensive configuration is cheaper than Razer's 17-inch, while the cheaper version comes in at the same price as Razer's 14-inch. Nice.

Easy mode update for Mega Man Unlimited is out

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 06:00 PM PDT

It was only a few days ago when I mentioned that a difficulty adjustment update to Mega Man Unlimited was on its way. Version 1.1.0 is now available, bringing along a whole host of changes.

The biggest and most welcome addition is the new Easy mode. Like in Mega Man 10, safety blocks now cover many bottomless pits and spike traps, but that's not all. Enemies deal less damage, an extra checkpoint has been added to all the castle stages at the 2/3 mark, and speed hazards like Rainbow Man's lasers and Trinitro Man's nitroglycerin platforms have been delayed. And speaking of Rainbow Man's lasers, they won't kill you instantly if you have sufficient health.

Further tweaks, which are applied to all difficulty modes, include slight stage layout changes, a checkpoint immediately after Rainbow Man's mini-boss, the ability to skip cutscenes and enemy intro sequences with the press of any button, and an exit function to instantly leave a previously completed level. Most significant are checkpoints just before the boss rooms in the castle stages so you don't have to replay large portions over again, as well as a fix for the native controller support so that it no longer has that "sticking" issue I complained about in my review.

This update is only for the PC build for now -- the Mac build was ported by a third party after all. Hopefully, this should address most players' concerns. And if you are feeling saucy enough to try the new super hard Insta-kill mode, please share your wonderful experience with the group.

The Daily Hotness: Nintendo sold lots of Tingle hats
