Looks like Left 4 Dead 3 is in the works

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 04:00 PM PDT

Fans from the Reddit DOTA 2 community went on a tour of Valve recently and some secrets may have been spilled among the many photos that were taken. A picture of an employee's computer screen was captured, and upon closer inspection you can see that Left 4 Dead 3 was mentioned. That, and it's going to be running on the Source 2 engine.

Source 2 is no surprise as Gabe Newell has talked about this before, but this is the first time that Left 4 Dead 3 has ever been brought up. I wonder if fans will get pissed off again that a sequel is happening again.

Anyway, we would reach out to Valve's Doug Lombardi for an official statement on the matter but we'd have better luck yelling at the moon for a reply.

Boy stops speeding car, credits Mario Kart for his skills

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 03:00 PM PDT

I don't remember the last time I read or watched a feel-good story involving videogames in the mainstream news. Hell, I'm having trouble finding news within game media outlets that doesn't paint a bleak or damning future for our hobby. Let's correct that, shall we?

Just over a week back outside the town of Hugo, Colorado, 10-year-old Gryffin Sanders was riding along in the car with his great grandmother Darlene Nestor and his 4-year-old brother. All of a sudden, grandma passed out while traveling 60 miles per hour. Gryffin sprung into action by grabbing the wheel and turning the vehicle into a muddy ditch. No one was harmed, and Gryffin was hailed as a hero.

"I'm pretty good at go kart driving," claimed Gryffin, who credits his time spent playing Mario Kart for his quick-thinking reflexes. I personally wouldn't recommend that driver's ed students practice using a game in which you toss turtle shells at fellow motorists, but good on the boy for applying his knowledge. The only question that remains is, how far did he drift that sonofagun before it came to a stop? He had to have kicked up a shower of blue sparks!

Company of Heroes 2 removed from sale in Russia

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 02:30 PM PDT

Whilst our own Joshua Derocher loved Company of Heroes 2, it has not gone down too well in Russia and Eastern Europe. Polgyon reports that the game's publisher in those regions, 1C-SoftClub, has removed the game from sale, bowing to online pressure from fans and press in Russia and CIS countries.

Gamers have taken issue with the way the original Company of Heroes portrayed the Allied forces as a brave and honest force, while the game's sequel has resorted to broad stereotypes that paint the Red Army in an unflattering light to say the least. Although developer Relic Entertainment was keen to point out the historical accuracy and eye-witness testimony it used in creating the game's story, over 17,000 signatures in a petition to have the game removed from Steam have led to the game's removal from sale.

Even though historical consensus is that the Eastern Front was a horrible place to be, it seems the broad strokes that Relic used in its story have left a poor taste in gamers' mouths. Whilst I don't think we'll see CoH2's western publisher SEGA withdraw the game from sale, I doubt there can be work done to make the game more acceptable to Russian gamers. It would take a lot of time to re-do cutscenes and the structure of the missions.

Dr. Wily wets himself in Mega Man #28

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 02:00 PM PDT

It's over! It's all over! It's all... PSYCHE! You think I'd stop covering the Mega Man comics just because the crossover is finished? Who do you think I am?

Though the evens of "Worlds Collide" are technically canon to the main story, the effect of Eggman and Wily's Genesis Wave is that everyone's minds have been wiped of the whole ordeal (oh great and powerful deus ex machina!). After some momentary disorientation, Mega Man realizes he's right where he left off in Mega Man #23: locked in battle with Break Man, the secret identity of his brother, Blues.

Meanwhile, Dr. Wily attempts to use the alien supercomputer Ra Moon to launch his latest scheme, but to his horror, Ra Moon reveals that it was he who had been manipulating Wily since the beginning. In an instant, Ra Moon takes control, officially kicking off the adaptation of the Japan-only game Super Adventure Rockman.

As usual, I've got preview pages below, but this time I also included the solicitation with Archie's official summary and release info.

Bethesda shows off 30 minutes of The Elder Scrolls Online

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 01:30 PM PDT

During the second day of this past weekend's QuakeCon, Bethesda gave an extended look at its upcoming MMO, The Elder Scrolls Online. With such a well-known license behind it, the hype is understandably palpable, even from people such as myself who don't play MMOs very often. Considering it's also coming to PS4, I'm more than willing to give it a shake. It also helps that the game doesn't look half bad.

Now here's to hoping it takes a Guild Wars 2 approach to subscriptions.

Well, yeah: RAGE as a franchise isn't 'dead'

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 01:00 PM PDT

In what should come to the surprise of exactly no one, id Software's Tim Willits tells Polygon that RAGE is something the studio would like to return to eventually.

"The franchise is not dead, and we built the game in such a way where -- we made a rich enough universe where it would be quite easy to step back into that world and make something cool," the creative director said at QuakeCon. "So, yeah, that'd be great, someday."

It'll have to wait for the time being. id is entirely focused on Doom 4 right now and, speaking personally, I like to think another RAGE title wouldn't be the first project after development has wrapped up. Give us something else, even if, yes, I too would like to see more of that universe.

Tetris meets monster battling in Tetris Monsters

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 12:30 PM PDT

What genre or style of game hasn't been mashed up with Tetris yet? What about monster hunting role-playing? Let me check the list... nope! Doesn't look like it! You're clear to go!

The latest Tetris variant is Tetris Monsters, an iOS game that, as its name implies, will require you to clear lines in order to execute attacks during battle. From the trailer, it appears that the more lines you clear at a time, the greater the attack combo. The character art looks cute enough, which ought to rope in kawaii-loving Japanese players by the truckload.

Electronic Arts is publishing this, which guarantees that it'll be free-to-play with microtransactions pouring out the ass. Tetris Monsters is targeting release in Japan this year, but knowing EA, the game will find its way Westward soon enough.

Battlefield 4's second-screen feature is next-gen only

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 12:00 PM PDT

The second-screen feature of the new Battlelog service for Battlefield 4 will only be available on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox 360, DICE has confirmed to Engadget. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 players won't be able to use their tablet as a minimap in part because Battlelog is now "powered by the web," according to assistant producer Jesper Nielsen.

The upside of this is that DICE can push out updates more quickly and the Battlelog mobile app will offer QR code scanning in an attempt to simplify the setup process. I always hated having to remember my login details for a secondary account on top of PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.

"Creating a second-screen experience during gameplay is something completely new for us, so we're definitely treating it as a learning experience," said Nielsen. "We're super intrigued by these possibilities and early tests have showed that we're going in the right direction, but to be frank, it will stand its real test once we get it out to the players and see how they use it, both when they play and don't play. That will teach us a lot and help us innovate even more in this field."

Hotline Miami, Darkness II are some of your Daily Deals

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 11:30 AM PDT

I love playing co-op games, especially with my mates but it sucks when own a game that your friends don't. Green Man Gaming has a way to help; it's got game bundles reduced by 75%, each containing four copies of a co-op favourite. You can pick from the likes of Chivalry (£15.50/$24.99), Killing Floor (£14.99/$19.99), Sanctum (£11.99/$14.99), and Awesomenauts (£6.99/$9.99).

It looks like GamersGate's Summer sale will stop for no one and this week it's 100% indie games on sale, with new daily deals to look forward to. There's some great titles reduced today including Hotline Miami (£2.36/$3.38), Reus (£3.50/$5.00), Torchlight 2 (£3.74/$4.99), and Bastion (£3.45/$4.50). Steam's daily deal for the next 24 hours is the Darkness II which is 75% off at £4.99/$7.49.

Review: Cloudberry Kingdom

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 11:00 AM PDT

What started out as a Kickstarter project with a meager $20,000 funding goal has been picked up by Ubisoft, of all publishers, and brought to the usual digital platforms.

At first glance, Cloudberry Kingdom may not be much to look at -- and that feeling doesn't ever go away, I'm sad to report -- but the real draw is the game's seemingly endless levels achieved through procedural generation. That, and it's supposed to be really tough.

They weren't kidding.

Meunier's guide to games journalism is thorough, sober

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 10:30 AM PDT

I don't know Nathan Meunier personally, but after powering through his book on freelance games writing I can tell that the man has been through the trenches -- and still managing to thrive within them.

Up Up Down Down Left Write is an unflattering and practical guide to living the dream; an earnest look into the geek-glamorous lifestyle of the paid videogames publication word-spewer, and how to sneak in uninvited. This book is as useful as it is just outright brutal, and that's what makes it a page-turner. Meunier does not skirt around the fact that website and magazine editors have 1,000 perfectly valid reasons to turn you down, and only the most creative and pragmatic will succeed.

When you're just 18 pages deep he asks: "Are you scared yet?"

New releases: Get your dragon on, and then do it again

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 10:15 AM PDT

Apparently it's shark week in the US, but more importantly, it's also dragon week. Dragon's Crown and Dragon Commander -- two extremely different scaley games -- are dropping, and fans of winged reptiles are likely rejoicing. Chris is a big fan of the former, and I've been playing the heck out of the latter for quite some time, and loving every second of it.

Other games are also launching this week, but without the aid of dragons, does anybody really care? Ports, a JRPG, something called Superfrog -- all of these pale in comparison to our graceful dragon overlords.

Anything tempting you this week?

SimCity for Mac launches on August 29

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT

After being hit with a not insignificant delay, the Mac version of SimCity should be ready for release at the tail end of this month. At least, Maxis and Electronic Arts have announced an August 29 launch -- let's hope things go a bit more smoothly this time, shall we?

One thing I do like about this release is that everyone who bought SimCity for PC will get a free Mac copy through Origin. The two versions are also compatible with one another, so your friends won't be divided by platform. Assuming you have friends who still want to play the game with you.

Dishonored: The Brigmore Witches sets it all to rest

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 09:30 AM PDT

All great things must end, and it has been a great run for Dishonored, which is set to conclude with Dishonored: The Brigmore Witches. This final DLC is meant to wrap up Daud's story, as he confronts Delilah Cooperspoon and her Brigmore Witches.

You'll get some new powers to play with, such as the Force-like Pull, as well as some retuning favorites, like Summon Assassins. If you're interested in The Brigmore Witches, make sure you've completed The Knife of Dunwall first so your save carries over, importing both your narrative decisions and gameplay bonuses.

Here's why PlanetSide 2 can't do cross-platform play

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT

While the PlayStation 4 version of PlanetSide 2 will be visually similar to its currently-available PC counterpart, the way post-release updates are going to roll out on the platform means the player base will be divided. Creative director Matt Higby explained the unfortunate but understandable situation Sony Online Entertainment is in to Eurogamer:

"Because of the update cadence, and the additional steps you have to go through to be able to release an update on the PlayStation Network, we're not going to be able to keep our servers in sync, so you won't be able to just play with the same people," he said. "They might be a week behind in terms of patching, or a day behind or whatever it ends up being, and we can't really have that."

It's not a total loss, though. The team is looking into character portability which would mean that as "a PC character, you could transfer it to PlayStation 4, and then back. The character format's the same on both, it's just purely a matter of the server updates." That would be greatly appreciated given the time-sink nature of these free-to-play games.

Jimquisition: Dragon's Frown

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Oh yes, it's another video about reviews and things. Not quite the usual flavor, but certainly something that cannot be repeated enough.

If you're a fan of Vanillaware, you may not be helping by pouring excessive scorn on a reviewer who may not agree with you. In fact, nobody's helped when you stop the party just because one person isn't enjoying it as much as you are. Who wins there? Nobody.

Least of all those who threw the party.

Assassin's Creed IV screenshots show present day setting

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 07:30 AM PDT

Though it hasn't been talked about in any official capacity, a lot of people may have already guessed that Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag would have some sort of present day component. These screens would suggest the same, showing an Abstergo corporate building, the modern day headquarters of the Templar Order.

I have to admit (please don't rage) that I can't find it in me to get excited for Blag Flag after what happened with Assassin's Creed III. No spoilers, but things were pretty final, so it's interesting to see how Ubisoft will be explain that away.

Betrayer is the debut game from Blackpowder Games

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 07:00 AM PDT

If you make a trailer that combines a striking look and an unusual setting, you're sure to get my attention. This trailer for Betrayer, the debut game from Blackpowder Games, does just that. The studio was started by former Monolith developers, famous for F.E.A.R. and No One Lives Forever

You character has traveled to an English colony in which the world has been drained of all color and corrupted settlers and spectres roam the landscape. Just like The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, Betrayer's setting in history is an under-explored one; the colonization of North America gave rise to new myths and legends, not least the fate of the Roanoke Colony. Betrayer will be appearing on Steam Early Access later in August.

Those four new StreetPass games earned $4M in a month

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 06:30 AM PDT

The four new StreetPass games added to the 3DS Mii Plaza seem to be taking off. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told Tokyo Keizai Online that they've generated $4 million in around a month's time. The titles -- Mii ForceFlower TownWarrior's Way, and Monster Manor -- are priced at a mere $5 each, or $14.99 when purchased together.

It's the rabbit. It has to be. The average StreetPass-using gamer is too susceptible to his charms.

Mines of Mars explores procedurally generated red planet

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 06:00 AM PDT

If the idea of exploring a realistic facsimile of Mars isn't your jam, then perhaps the more fantastic approach that Mines of Mars takes will be a bit more tantalizing. Developer Crescent Moon Games describes it as a "procedural atmospheric mining game" and cites both Metroid and Motherlode as influences.

The music in the trailer definitely has a Metroid feel to it, though the art style reminds me more of Blocks That Matter than anything else. Mines of Mars promises a variety of extraterrestrial flora and fauna, as well as an explanation for why life on Mars had been hidden thus far. Nothing gets me excited like quasi-plausible alien life, especially some so close to home.

Mines of Mars is currently seeking approval on Steam Greenlight.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist to skip offline co-op for Wii U

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 05:30 AM PDT

While Batman: Arkham Origins is passing on multiplayer for Wii U, Splinter Cell: Blacklist is going in the other direction in terms of missing functionality. Ubisoft's Wii U port will not support offline cooperative play, it was revealed in an interview with Nintendo Life. Online co-op, however? Totally making the cut.

According to producer Liu Jun, this was a necessary decision in order for Ubisoft to pull off a simultaneous multiplatform release. "We think Nintendo gamers will be really excited to get the game at the same time as other consoles," he told the outlet.

I can't tell you how many times I've booted up a game thinking offline co-op was supported only to find out that wasn't the case. Not a good feeling. At least Wii U owners have some advanced notice here.

Prior to restart, Doom 4 lacked a 'personality'

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 04:30 AM PDT

Coming into this year's QuakeCon, I didn't expect to hear much of anything about Doom 4. Like a child who doesn't get that one specific toy for Christmas year after year, I can only have my heart broken so many times. It's cool. IGN was able to get some informative quotes out of id and Bethesda on the long-in-development project, which has undergone a reboot.

"Every game has a soul," explained studio director Tim Willits. "Every game has a spirit. When you played Rage, you got the spirit. And [Doom] did not have the spirit, it did not have the soul, it didn’t have a personality. It had a bit of schizophrenia, a little bit of an identity crisis. It didn’t have the passion and soul of what an id game is. Everyone knows the feeling of Doom, but it’s very hard to articulate."

"You can make a game and say, ‘that’s not a bad game, but it’s not as good as an Elder Scrolls game should be,’ and there’s a difference...it’s not great," said Bethesda VP of markerting Pete Hines. "It’s not amazing. It’s not what people have waited all this time for. It needs to be like ‘this was totally worth the wait.’ And I think what the guys at id are working on is...they’re pushing the boundaries and challenging themselves. I don’t want anybody to look at id’s next project and have this reaction that it’s still stuck in the 90s."

Which kind of worries me a bit, but I suppose we have Doom and Doom II already -- a modern take on the series won't erase those games from our minds. id and Bethesda clearly want to get this right and aren't afraid to take their time in achieving that goal. Best of luck to them.

Wargaming celebrates 15 years with one hell of a party

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 03:30 AM PDT

Belarus is located in Eastern Europe, nestled above both Poland and Ukraine, a chunk found right on the far western edge of Russia. Minsk, the capital of Belarus, is a city of about 2 million, set in a dense forest of beautiful evergreen trees that look like they've been there since the end of the last ice age. It's a city that contrasts greatly from those of North America or Western Europe with its stark Soviet-Bloc style buildings and its striking monuments.

The people of Minsk speak loudly (in Russian -- English is rarely spoken) and have strong, intense eyes, but they're generally kind people that smile back when addressed, and are helpful when asked. On weekends you'll find that they enjoy themselves by walking through the city's immense parks, or having drinks in outdoor cafes. Visiting now, despite the remaining architecture of Stalin's design, it seems a world away from the headquarters of Russian army's Western Front, or one of the largest Nazi ghettos of World War II.

World of Warplanes flies right onto my radar

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 03:00 AM PDT

World of Tanks? It's not for me. I think tanks are f*cking awesome, but the MMO craze that has some 65 million people playing somehow doesn't do it for me.

Now, what I've seen for upcoming title World of Warships looks intriguing, but that's some ways off. Though we do not have a solid release date yet, World of Warplanes is coming first, sometime this fall. I spent some quality time with Warplanes last week, and that was enough to have me looking forward to hitting the skies once more.

15,000+ cans of energy drink consumed at QuakeCon 2013

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 01:30 AM PDT

Have you ever been to QuakeCon? It's fantastic. I missed it this year, and an infographic that Bethesda sent along shows me exactly what I missed.

Take the jitters. It's a reality for this 24-hour-a-day event, located in Dallas, TX. Energy drinks are a way of life there. Bethesda says that 15,552 cans of energy drink were consumed at the August 1-4 event -- enough to fill up an LPG tank truck! 5,900 pieces of equipment were scanned for the BYOC room, and they were strung together by 63,400 feet of cable.

See the full infographic below.

Nintendo Download Europe: Spin the Bottle

Posted: 05 Aug 2013 12:30 AM PDT

Headlining today's Nintendo Download is the peculiar Wii U game Spin the Bottle: Bumpie's Party, which forgoes TV support in favor of a full-on GamePad party setup. Combined with the interesting name choice, I have no idea what to expect from it, but I'll be checking it out whenever it hits US shores. In other news, the Wii U Virtual Console is getting Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV, as well as Galaga.

On the 3DS side, SteamWorld Dig, Tangram Style, and Deer Drive Legends are hitting the marketplace. Sales include escapeVektor (now €5 / £4.49), Crash City Mayhem (now €9.99 / £8.99), and Rising Board 3D (now €1.49 / £1.29), which are all on sale until August 22. There's not a whole lot this week, and I don't think I would buy anything outside of Spin the Bottle.

Have you guys seen the new Mickey Mouse animated shorts on Disney Channel lately? It's pretty bizarre stuff. The style takes cues from the classic cartoons of decades past, but it's far more manic than you probably would have expected. That's all thanks to the mind of producer Paul Rudish, an award-winning animator who has worked on Dexter's Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, Star Wars: The Clone Wars (the first one, not the CGI one), and Sym-Bionic Titan.
