Posted: 04 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT Nostalgia for the sake of it can often set people up for disappointment. While retro visuals and old-school gameplay can be an easy way into the heart of many gamers, you need a solid, working foundation to back it up, otherwise you risk getting lost in a sea of retro cash-ins. Thankfully, Kid Tripp is different. It takes the core aspect of the "endless" runner genre, packages it into a visual style reminiscent of the Game Gear era, and adds its own charms and nuances to make it stand out.
Sup Holmes finds super joy with Cassie Chui Posted: 04 Aug 2013 07:50 AM PDT Today on Sup Holmes we welcome Cassie Chui to the program. Cassie is a mainstay of Toronto's independent development scene, having partaken in multiple game jams and larger scale collaborations such as Project Overboard. She's currently hard at work on Electronic Super Joy from Michael Todd Games, which is up for pre-order now and hits Steam in beta tomorrow. There is no more exciting and terrifying time for a developer than the day before their game goes public, and we'll get to share that time with Cassie live on today's show. We'll be talking to Cassie about all that, her goals in game developer, her biggest influences, and a lot more. Join us at 1pm PST/4pm for the whole party.
Twist in the wind with latest Tales of Xillia trailer Posted: 04 Aug 2013 07:00 AM PDT The time has come. At long last, Tales of Xillia is set to hit shelves this week. The arduous wait is almost finally over. Just a few more days are all that separates us from the highly anticipated role-playing game. In the meantime, Namco Bandai has cast forth yet another trailer to tantalize the masses as the hours slowly wind down to zero.
Posted: 04 Aug 2013 01:00 AM PDT Miyamoto may have created Pikmin to be a "carefree experience," but that doesn't mean it lacks depth. With the addition of a particularly creative set of local multiplayer modes, Pikmin 3 has a ton of gameplay related nuances that may be lost to the void if you aren't careful. Here are some tips to help you acclimate yourself to the wonderful, cute world of Pikmin.
Nintendo bred a new flower to market Pikmin on GameCube!? Posted: 03 Aug 2013 07:00 PM PDT The common refrain these days is that Nintendo doesn't know how to market the Wii U. But I know the creativity is still there, waiting to be tapped. Case in point... The latest episode of Did You Know Gaming? arrives just in time to celebrate today's release of Pikmin 3. Narrated by JonTron (Jon's back! Yay!), this Pikmin-themed special runs through some of the more familiar nuggets of Pikmin lore, such as how it was based upon the Super Mario 128 Spaceworld demo. One bit of trivia that I was totally unaware of was that Nintendo bred a new flower called "Bacoba Cabana" that resembled the flower on the yellow Pikmin's head and sold it to the public five months after the launch of the original Pikmin. When you are literally creating life just to promote a videogame, you've officially entered the realm megalomania. Stop playing God, Nintendo! Pikmin - Did You Know Gaming? Feat. JonTron [YouTube]
