Capcom launching nation wide Dead Rising 3 zombie race

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 03:30 PM PDT

Have you ever wanted to be chased by zombies? Don't lie to me. I bet all you sons of guns have sat around dreaming up silly, foolproof zombie escape plans that would liven up your meager existence. Well, Capcom, teaming up with Run For Your Lives, has delivered something close. It's certainly survival of the fittest.

Run For Your Lives is a 5k obstacle course race wherein you can sign up as a plain racer or as a zombie. Racers are released in waves. Zombies eat slower racers and turn them into zombies. All the rest of the races this year come in partnership with Capcom and Dead Rising 3. I wonder if they'll just loop The Cranberries' "Zombie" throughout the event. Now it's stuck in your heeead, too.

There's also a party at the end of it with drinks, food, and Dead Rising 3 stuff. Registering for the race will cost you, but you can be a spectator for the event -- and attend the party -- for free. I haven't been ri-singing Capcom's praises this generation, but if there's one thing it knows how to do, it's throw strange events, like the Resident Evil 6 butchery that was selling "human" meat.

If baby you were born to run, check the event dates and locations here.

XCOM: Enemy Within: Ghost robots & transhumanism

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 02:30 PM PDT

You're well Enemy Within your rights to be upset with the lackluster The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, but when you remember that XCOM: Enemy Unknown was excellent, you should be back to appropriate levels of excitement for its expansion, Enemy Within.

This new trailer shows off some of the new alien units that want to cleave your stupid human face. New additions include the Seeker, shown off in this trailer, which is like a mix between the mechanical squids of The Matrix and the alien ghosts from Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. That's the first thing I thought of, anyway.

Also on display is some transhumanism. Seems you can biologically or cybernetically augment and alter your soldiers. Apparently, "These soldiers sacrifice much, but gain never before discovered combat effectiveness." I wonder if this sacrifice is purely aesthetic or reflected in gameplay. Anyone planning on playing the game straight up with pure, good old fashion human DNA and biology?

Dale dug the game when he checked it out at gamescom. It'll be coming as a $30 PC expansion on November 12, though you can also nab it bundled with Enemy Unknown (and all its previous DLC) on PS3 and 360 for $40.

Inafune Kickstarts spiritual successor to Mega Man, No. 9

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 01:00 PM PDT

For all of you who wanted Capcom to do Mega Man justice with a brand new HD style game, prepare to have your prayers answered by the big mega gaming man himself, Keiji Inafune, with some help by his company comcept. It's called Mighty No. 9, and it literally looks like a true Mega Man game from top to bottom.

The protagonist is named Beck, and he's the ninth robot in a line of ones [eight robot masters] who were infected by a virus [Mavericks]. He'll run through six stages [Mega Man 1], and copy abilities from his fallen foes, as he fights various lesser enemies throughout the landscape, one of which is themed after a construction object [Metools]. Reading through the Kickstarter, fans of the Blue Bomber will spot even more references, which has me even more giddy to see it in action.

Right now the game is slated for the PC platform (with gamepad support) by way of Steam, but stretch goals include Mac, Linux, and other consoles.

As a Mega Man fan, I can't explain how excited I am for this!

The offensive leads to the defensive in Toy Rush

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 12:37 PM PDT

One of the cutest-looking games that I saw at PAX Prime was Uber Entertainment's Toy Rush. Don't let the cuteness deceive you, though. Toy Rush is shaping up to be a surprisingly deep and fun title.

The developers most often recognized for Monday Night Combat put a bit of a twist on what they know the best. Toy Rush is a tower defense title that tasks the player with focusing on an offensive or defensive approach depending on whether engaged in single- or multiplayer.

Actually, single-player could probably be considered a training grounds of sorts for the multiplayer. The 50 level single-player campaign is oriented around working your way toward destroying the enemy's base by strategically releasing your different foot soldiers. Each level completed earns you tickets, which in turn are used to buy booster packs of cards.

Dustforce is heading to the 360, Vita, and PS3

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 12:00 PM PDT

In the first few weeks of 2012, a modest indie PC game called Dustforce was released. It's a time attack style puzzle platformer by nature, but I found myself immediately falling in love with the high skill ceiling, unique visuals, and solid controls.

In a rather random announcement, Capcom is going to be publishing the game on the 360, Vita, and PS3 platforms. It'll feature cross-play for the Vita and PS3, with details on what that entails coming at a later date, along with the release date and price. My takeaway from this is that the Vita is getting yet another solid indie hit -- they keep rolling in!

Dragon*Con Cosplay roundup for Thursday and Friday

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 11:00 AM PDT

Wesley shared his top notch cosplay pictures earlier today, but compliments of Matt Zeher, we have some more pictures that simply must be seen. Among the highlights are a Marvel and DC photoshoot with special guest George Perez (a famous illustrator), a superhero gender-bender shoot, and an incredible Borderlands bonanza near the end of the massive gallery below.

Pretty much all of the photos are gold, but the Borderlands series in particular is my favorite, as there are some pretty incredible costumes that even have the animation details from the actual game!

The Oculus Rift has gone high definition

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 10:30 AM PDT

A whole mess of us donned a prototype HD Oculus Rift VR system at this year's PAX Prime show, and here you'll see Jim Sterling and Spencer Hayes discuss how much they enjoyed the experience.

Personally, I'm not sold yet. I found that the HD system had a noticeable motion blur when I would move my head, but I also don't think Hawken (the game we were able to play with the Oculus Rift at the time) is necessarily the best demonstration of what's capable with the system. Maybe it'll sweep me off my feet the next time I try but, for now, listen to Jim and Spencer.

Capcom releases free 'I Am Street Fighter' documentary

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT

Do you have a free hour or so? You could spend it watching a brand new free to watch documentary from Capcom, titled I Am Street Fighter, which was uploaded to YouTube over the weekend.

If you're interested in the history of Capcom, arcades, videogame design, Street Fighter, or fighting games in general, this is a really interesting watch. It goes through the history of the franchise from the beginning, give us a glimpse into the lives of hundreds of people in the process. As I fighting game fan, I can relate to a lot of these stories.

Good work, Capcom!

Samurai Gunn might be my favorite game at PAX

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 09:24 AM PDT

I didn't really know what Samurai Gunn was before today. It has one of those sort of cliché names that's easy to pass over if you don't have a particular reason to care. After playing it on the PAX show floor, I might not be able to stop thinking about it.

Samurai Gunn is a two-to-four player brawler that's stupidly easy to learn. The only moves in your arsenal are running, jumping, a melee attack, and fireballs to shoot. The objective is to place a well-timed one-hit kill on one of your several opponents before they can get to you. Easier said than done.

The relatively small battle arenas quickly and inevitably fill up with a flurry of players that are probably either on a kill streak or have just respawned. That's kind of par for the course with Samurai Gunn -- you feel like you're doing really well until someone swiftly and unceremoniously rips you off your pedestal.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is a major improvement

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT

As much as I love Bioware's style of creating compelling companions and giving the player agency to make choices that ultimately affect the overarching narrative, I have never been able to get into the Dragon Age series, no matter how much I've tried. This might be because I started with Dragon Age 2, and ended when I tossed my controller in disgust at the combat that seemed at turns frustrating and tiresome. I knew that beyond the repetitive battles there existed a truly interesting story with well developed companion characters, but the spawning waves of enemies seemed like such a lazy design choice and I couldn't forgive the game for wasting my time in that way.

Coming into Dragon Age: Inquisition, I was skeptical of just how Bioware had changed the formula and if the series could appeal to someone like me, spurned by the most recent game and not invested enough in the lore to care deeply about the series to see it through. After a special hands-off demonstration of the newest iteration in the series, I came away not only incredibly impressed with just how different the game played, but also with how well it seems to have hybridized elements of several different genres in such a successful way to renew my interest once again.

I may even be convinced to force myself to actually play the second one through, just to appreciate everything the series has to offer.

This is how the Pokemon Rumble U toys work

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 08:30 AM PDT

Pokemon Rumble U dropped last week on the Wii U eShop, and surprisingly, it's the first game that features the integration of NFC (Near field communication) technology on the Wii U. It's a feature that's been there since launch and one a few developers have dabbled in (including Ubisoft), but never used.

Because of this, a bunch of people have been asking me how the new toys for Pokemon Rumble U fit into the game. In the name of garme jurnalism, I went out and bought two to test out for the good of the realm.

Our top 10 favorite games of PAX Prime 2013

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 08:00 AM PDT

You know, it's probably a good thing that PAX Prime 2013 is a 4-day show this year. There's a ton of games as always from the big dogs, but the indies. Man, the indies are killing it this year. From within the massive Indie Mega Booth, to a bunch of other smaller titles scattered across the show floor, there's just so many games from smaller studios that everyone NEEDS to play.

So as always with every PAX, we narrowed down the list and picked our top 10 favorite games of the show that were playable:

It's never easy picking just ten. And yeah, technically a top fifteen given there's two Pokemon titles, and that Sports Friends is comprised of Hokra, Super Pole Riders, BaraBariBall, and Johann Sebastian Joust. We've talked about some of these games in the past before, but there's a good amount we just got to see for the very first here at Prime. We'll have previews on some of the newer stuff coming to you soon so you can see exactly why we dug ones like Crypt of the Necromancer, Pixel Junk Inc., and Samurai Gunn.

Until then, go vote for the game you're looking forward to the most in our community choice category for PAX Prime.

Hotline Miami 2 is more of the same strangeness

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 07:30 AM PDT

Hamza and Spencer took some time at PAX Prime 2013 to check out Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number and found it to be more of the crazed action which so captured our imaginations last year. Watch the video for their full report.

Review: Open Me!

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 07:00 AM PDT

Augmented Reality games tend to be very hit or miss, with the majority falling squarely in the "miss" category. Either they don't quite fit well within the reality setting, or they don't do enough to capture your attention to keep you playing for very long -- and all of them seem to have issues with their core gameplay design of augmenting your reality.

Open Me!, however, hopes to eschew those hindrances with a unique take on the AR theme, while offering some truly challenging puzzles. Be warned though: playing this game can end up being more of a workout than you bargained for.

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse puts the rest to shame

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 06:45 AM PDT

Tucked away in a corner below The Wind Waker HD and behind Pokemon X/Y at PAX is a small kiosk featuring Retro City Rampage and Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, both on the 3DS. Stop by if you have the chance. The games are both fantastic, and on top of that, their developers should be standing by to chat you up. Make time for them if you can.

Pirate's Curse may be one of the most attractive games at the show. WayForward has really gone all out this time, using the sprites from Shantae: Risky's Revenge as a base, while adding additional colors and frames of animation. The 3DS screen makes for a larger playfield, lending to more intricate environmental puzzles, more enemies on screen, and more action in general. It's easily their prettiest handheld title yet.

As those of you who've been following the series so far already know, Shantae has lost her former half-genie powers, and has been forced to team up with criminal pirate troublemaker Risky Boots in order to try to get them back. Risky ends up rubbing off on Shantae in more ways than one. Not only will Shantae learn pirate-styled attacks and abilities, but she'll gradually begin to behave more like a pirate as well.

Road Not Taken looks hauntingly awesome

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 06:00 AM PDT

Sony has debuted a new trailer for their "roguelike puzzle game" Road Not Taken, and I'm really digging the entire theme of the game. Developed by the studio Spry Fox, the game will apparently be hitting both the previously announced PlayStation Vita and the PlayStation 4 in 2014. They promise "dozens of hours" of playtime with no two exact sessions, which sounds great on paper.

I can't quite put my finger on what the haunting soundtrack reminds me of, but whatever it is, I like it.

Cosmic Star Heroine is coming to the PS4 and Vita

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 05:00 AM PDT

As if the Sony family didn't have enough indies, yet another intruiging looking title from Zeboyd was revealed at PAX -- Cosmic Star Heroine. Taking a page from the Sega-CD, the trailer gives us a brief look into the world of Cosmic Star, which looks decidedly old school.

According to Zeboyd, they're attempting to re-create the feel of some of the classic RPGs of the 90s with their own bit of flair, and Chrono Trigger is namedropped as in an inspiration (go on....). This is looking awesome so far, and I can't wait to try it out given Zeybod's solid history of modern day retro RPGs. A Kickstarter is coming soon to help fund the project. It's set for the PS4, Vita, and PC platforms.

Check out what's in store for PS+ in this new video

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 04:30 AM PDT

Sony is gearing up for the PS4's launch, but before then, you can get a quick glimpse into what's in store for PlayStation Plus subscribers. A ton of games headline the trailer, most notably the "free" version of DriveClub that's coming to the PS4 at launch.

Sony also reminds us that your Plus membership applies to the PS3, Vita, and PS4. Personally, I just renewed my membership the other day in anticipating for the PS4 -- I've gotten more than my money's worth!

As a side note, it's weird to see Sony officially advertising PlayStation Plus as a requirement to play games online, but that's just the way things go I guess.

Team Meat's latest, Mew-Genics, teased in new trailer

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 04:00 AM PDT

Team Meat is teasing its newest game with a rather catchy song, centered around cute cats, hideous experiments, and lots of pooping. That seems to be the theme of Mew-Genics, and although we don't have any more gameplay revelations in this teaser, we do have adorable cats dancing next to giant trash-heaps of other dead cats, so that's something, right?!

Mew-Genics is officially coming in 2014, and it's currently slated for the iPad and PC platforms.

Dragon Con Cosplay day one

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 01:00 AM PDT

Well after a day that came and went like a blur, I still can't get over some of the astounding cosplays I witnessed during the first full day of madness at Dragon*Con 2013.

It's really quite amazing how the downtown scene of Atlanta transforms into such a magical world of awesomeness. I've been to a ton of conventions on the west coast and even after one day I can say that nothing I've ever seen is quite like Dragon*Con.

Day 1 of any convention tends to be the tamest for cosplay, but I was still able to snag some pics of some pretty awesome costumes on display.

Check out the gallery below and make sure to let us know which is your favorite so far.
