The Xbox Live Marketplace is now the Xbox Games Store

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 03:00 PM PDT

It appears as if Microsoft is ahead of schedule on the transition to the Xbox One, as it just recently eliminated Microsoft Points from its marketplace. Now, the "Xbox Live Marketplace" has been re branded before the Xbox One's November launch into the "Xbox Games Store."

It's not a huge deal, but Microsoft is starting to make some strides into transition before launch, which is a nice change from publishers who tend to scramble directly at launch, or fail to provide basic features out of the box. Hopefully Microsoft's day one "DRM removal" update won't be nearly as problematic.

This Liberation Maiden Sin teaser makes me want it

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 02:00 PM PDT

Liberation Maiden Sin, the full PS3 sequel to the beautiful 3DS shooter Liberation Maiden, is still in the works. This time around, Maiden will return in visual novel form rather than a full-on shooter game, partially penned by none other than famed designer Suda 51.

There's still no release date set, but it's planned to drop sometime in late 2013 in Japan. While Liberation Maiden had a great localization plan due to its incorporation in the Guild01 Collection, I'm not sure a visual novel is going to have the same luck. But thankfully it will be on the PS3 after all, so importing is probably in the cards so long as you can understand Japanese.

Betrayer is really confusing, but in a good way

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 01:20 PM PDT

I played Betrayer today, and I have no idea what it's about. Not because of any sort of inattentiveness on my part, but because the ex-Monolith developers don't want me to know what it's about. That's kind of the intrigue behind Blackpowder Games' first title -- trying to figure out exactly what the hell's happening.

The first-person perspective game starts on the shores amidst the aftermath of a shipwreck. Immediately, Betrayer's most defining characteristic hits you -- the monochromatic visual scheme mixed with deep hues of red. It's reminiscent of Bloodforge in this sense, except it emphasizes things of importance instead of ultraviolence. Chests, enemies, and items that can be interacted with are highlighted, making them stick out across the desolate but vegetated environment.

From there, you get to figure out where to go. There's no goal in mind, no waypoint marked, nothing but sheer curiosity pushing you forward. As you wander into a deserted fort, you get the feeling that you're a part of something bigger. A ringing of a mysterious bell and a conversation with a ghost confirm that feeling. After departing the fort, Betrayer shows its true colors.

Nvidia teams up to offer Batman: Arkham Origins with GPUs

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 01:16 PM PDT

Nvidia is working with Warner Bros. to make Batman: Arkham Origins a pretty PC game. Their Developer Technology Team has been working with WB Games Montreal to work in all of their gaming tech to make this game look great, including DirectX tessellation, TXAA antialiasing, soft shadows, PhysX effects, and more.

They're also working out a deal to give those buying an Nvidia GPU a free copy of the game. when released this October. Free! Head here for more details.

Also free is the sneak peek of Batman: Arkham Origins here at PAX Prime in Seattle. A stage presentation set for September 2 at 10 a.m. at the Paramount Theater is free to attend.

This new Kingdom Hearts HD trailer brings back memories

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 01:00 PM PDT

In just a few short weeks you'll be able to play a trio of Kingdom Hearts games in HD in the form of HD 1.5 ReMIX, which features the original Kingdom Hearts, Re:Chain of Memories, and a movie version of 358/2 (okay, so the last one isn't fully playable). If you're so inclined can take a look at the latter two in this new video from Square Enix, and man does it get me in the mood to journey with Sora and company.

The first Kingdom Hearts game, and to a lesser extent Chain of Memories, were among my fondest gaming memories in the early 2000s. If you're confused with the "darkness hearts unlock my heart of darkness" plot or otherwise want to see a complete history of the Kingdom Hearts franchise, check out my full retrospective of every game -- I even try to make sense of the narrative at the end!

Evil RPG Blackguards' closed beta starts next week

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 12:30 PM PDT

With Daedalic's peculiar turn-based RPG Blackguards getting closer to release, the developer is opening the doors to beta testers interested in fighting evil with evil. Set in the same universe as Memoria (which I'm already in the process of reviewing and just came out today), Blackguards puts players in the shoes of a band of outcasts and criminals as they attempt to save the world from an even greater evil.

The beta will run from September 4 to October 2, and if you want to participate just shoot an email to betatest@daedalic.de, mentioning why you want to check it out and what your gaming experience is. As a fan of Daedalic's output and RPGs that don't demand that players take on the guise of a noble hero, I'm rather looking forward to this one.

Nintendo 2DS: I really like this bread slice of a system

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 12:23 PM PDT

While it wasn't necessarily available for public play, Nintendo did bring a couple of their newly announced 2DS game systems to PAX Prime this week to show off to media.

I was totally surprised at just how small and light the 2DS is. It weighs a fair bit less than the 3DS XL, and is quite a bit smaller in size. The initial images we saw made it seem huge, but it's about as tall as an iPhone 5, and about as wide as the phone in landscape mode. It looked to be a natural fit in Spencer's big assed hands, but also sat nicely in my smaller hands, so I think this will work for everyone from kids to titans.

So the size is fine. But how does it feel?

Lords of the Fallen keeps looking better and better

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 12:09 PM PDT

Lords of the Fallen looked good at E3; it looks even better at PAX Prime. After another hands-off demo, the next-generation action role-playing game really seems to be coming along nicely. Admirably, it seeks to improve, or at least deviate, on the formula that a certain well-known and similar couple of titles nearly perfected.

There's no two ways about it -- Lords of the Fallen invites comparisons to Demon's/Dark Souls. The developers are painfully aware of the fact, almost immediately surrendering into an anticipated half-chuckle as the first syllables of the From Software's projects names were uttered. That's ultimately okay though, because Lords of the Fallen doesn't aim to mimic the Souls games.

Rather, Deck13 is structuring Lords of the Fallen to be a bit more of an accessible Dark Souls. That doesn't mean it's going to be easy -- spending any amount of time in front of the game makes that much wildly obvious. But, it's also not going to be punishing. Challenging and complex? Definitely. But not punishing.

Add funds to your PlayStation wallet using mobile devices

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 12:00 PM PDT

Sony may have added mobile payment functionality to the European PlayStation Store, US gamers haven't been able to enjoy the same conveniences -- until now, that is. As of yesterday, all PSN users will be able to log into their Account Management page and choose the "Use Mobile" option.

After entering your mobile phone number you'll be able to add funds via SMS, which will appear on your next phone bill. While I don't see a whole lot of people using this, options are a great thing, and I can see myself doing it every so often when I'm away and about to miss a big sale.

Nintendo is not going to offer a Wii U Ambassador program

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 11:00 AM PDT

Although it seems obvious that Nintendo will not be offering a special Wii U ambassador program in light of the recent console price drop, we're all left wondering "what if" due to the precedent. Wii U Daily took the initiative, and asked Nintendo outright -- here is what they said:

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to write with your questions regarding a Wii U Ambassador program. The Ambassador program is only available to any Nintendo 3DS owner who purchased their system before August 12, 2011 and there are no plans for a similar program for Wii U.

I know that this isn’t what you were hoping for, but we appreciate your support of our products now and in the future. I also want to assure you that your comments will be added to our records and made available for other departments at the company to use as they see fit.

Sincerely,
Nintendo of America Inc.
Helena Toledo

Well, there you go! It seems like a clear-cut response when you think about it, but now you can rest easy knowing you won't get anything for buying the Wii U early. Such is the life of an early adopter.

Admiral Swiggins officially joins Awesomenauts

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT

[Update: I've since played a few matches with Swiggins, and I have to say, he's incredibly fun. Behind Leon, I think he's currently my second favorite character, as he has a ton of potential, a good amount of variety in his skillset, and he's invaluable in teamfights with his anchor ability.]

I gave you a taste of what was to come with Awesomenauts recently, and part of that involved the brand new 'naut Admiral Swiggins. As of today he's out of the testing pan and into the fire, and you can simply download your PC update and play as him for free. Currently he's only available after you level up once, but as always, that limitation is waived if you buy a skin.

If you're so inclined, you can pick up the Admiral Swiggins PHD (Super Meat Boy) or the Abyssal Swiggins skins. I haven't had a chance to play as him yet, but I've played against him, and he seems really fun. His anchor ability is pretty brutal, as it allows him to root 'nauts for quite a while, but he doesn't seem to do a ton of damage, so right now he seems pretty balanced. We'll see how the meta is in a week, but for now I'm enjoying his inclusion.

Get acquainted with Paradox in the latest Humble Bundle

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 09:30 AM PDT

The latest Humble Weekly Sale is a cracker, putting up a bunch of Paradox Interactive's biggest titles. Pay what you want and you'll get War of the Roses (along with access to the War of the Vikings alpha), Warlock: Masters of the Arcane, Leviathan: Warships, Dungeonland and The Showdown Effect. I've spent quite a bit of time with most of them, reviewing all but Dungeonland, and can confidently recommend them all.

The most notable addition is probably Europa Universalis III which, while not quite as good as the latest iteration of the series, is pretty bloody splendid, and will certainly eat up days of your life.

Pay more than the average (currently $5.80) and you can grab what are probably Paradox's two most popular titles, Crusader Kings II and Magicka. It doesn't appear to include the many DLC expansions -- which are quite robust -- but the core games are still grand.

As a bonus, you can splash out on 48 Paradox titles, all on Steam, for $125. It's a lot, but a bargain for that many titles and, as always, you can donate your payment to the American Red Cross and Child's Play.

Rayman Legends is exclusive to the Wii U in Japan

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT

It feels like forever ago when console fans young and old were arguing over Ubisoft's decision to delay the Wii U version of Rayman Legends to port it to other consoles. But here we are on the eve of Legends' release, and it's actually quite good, and on multiple platforms for everyone to enjoy.

But that apparently isn't the case in every region, as Nintendo themselves are publishing the game on the Wii U in Japan as an exclusive. I'm currently enjoying this game as we speak, and the Mario and Luigi costumes were a nice touch.

Hey there my fine fellow Friday Night Fighters!

  • Hearthstone Beta Access
  • 5 beta keys
  • Yes, there is life on other planets, if you don't believe me go watch the 80's classic "Explorers"

King of Fighters XIII extends its Steam beta

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 08:00 AM PDT

King of Fighters XIII is finally coming to Steam on September 13th, and if you're a part of the beta, you can now enjoy your extended testing period until September 6th. A change of plans has occurred access wise, and now anyone who pre-orders the game can access the beta -- nice! If you want a chance at a key without buying the game, check out the King of Fighters Facebook page over the course of the next few days.

It took me a while to come around to it, but King of Fighters XIII is a massive step up from the disappointing XII, and I really enjoy it to this day. If you haven't played it yet and enjoy good fighting games, consider at least picking it up on a Steam sale.

Mark Cerny muses on Knack and I love it

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 07:00 AM PDT

Do you like Mark Cerny? Do you want to hear him speak Japanese and talk about his upcoming game, Knack? Who doesn't, right? Well this video is for you, as it gives us a more in-depth look at the game, in terms of the story, visuals, and the overall gameplay experience.

I'm not crazy about Knack in general (the art style is a bit too bland for me), but I'll definitely be checking it out around the PS4's launch for sure. In the video, Cerny notes that Knack's higher difficulties are actually a challenge, which gives me hope that it'll be more than just a quick five hour "one and done" type of game.

Take a look at the elusive Arkham Origins portable game

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 06:00 AM PDT

We haven't seen a whole lot of footage for Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, that Vita and 3DS spinoff that's launching alongside of the console versions of Arkham Origins, but today you can get a pretty solid glimpse at the bulk of what it has to offer through the above video.

While the gameplay doesn't blow me away at all, I'm loving the visual novel style delivery (if that's not Ashley Wood it sure looks like it), and I think it perfectly suits the portable platform. I wonder how the 3DS and Vita versions will compare, or if there will be any sacrifices made to comply with the limitations of Nintendo's portable.

Killzone Shadowfall bundle found on Amazon France

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 05:00 AM PDT

Although unconfirmed, a Killzone: Shadowfall PS4 bundle has been spotted on Amazon France. This mystery model touts a 500GB HDD, along with two (!) Dualshock 4 controllers, a copy of Shadowfall, and the PlayStation Camera.

Seeing as Shadowfall is a launch title, I suspect this bundle should be announced sometime soon if it is indeed real -- I just hope it comes to the US, because I wouldn't mind picking up an extra controller and the camera for a discount.

Halo 5's first story details emerge

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 04:00 AM PDT

[Update: Microsoft has commented on the listing, stating that it is "completely inaccurate and not provided by 343 or Microsoft."

A pre-order description for the new Halo game (which may or may not be Halo 5) was spotted on the Microsoft Store, and it gives us a tiny glimpse into the sort of thing Master Chief will be dealing with on the Xbox One. It appears as if ol' Johnny boy is in possession of a "mysterious" data chip, as he deals with a situation that involves the hunting of all sentient life in the galaxy. Yep, sounds like a typical day for the Chief.

The Microsoft Store also list a placeholder date of 12/31/14, which is probably bogus, but possibly indicates a 2014 release. Either way, I've seen a lot of jaded Halo fans since ODST, and I hope the new Halo can really mix things up to bring people back in again.

My experience with Final Fantasy XIV: ARR so far

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 03:00 AM PDT

Final Fantasy XIV has had quite the tumultuous history over the years. Back in 2010 I had the chance to play the beta at E3, and almost immediately, I had a pretty terrible time. It was dated mechanically, not all that exciting, and didn't really do anything to push the genre forward.

Now in 2013, Square Enix is getting a second chance with the complete rework titled Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Right now I'm working on a Lancer on Adamantoise, toiling away in the beautiful town of Gridania. That is, when I can connect to Square Enix's servers.

BREAKING: Win an Xbox One with Mountain Dew and Doritos

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 02:54 AM PDT

You've seen the Halo 4 Mountain Dew App, you've even taken a journey into the very Hall of Mountain Dew itself, but are you prepared for the new Dew and Doritos Xbox One giveaway? I thought not. A promotion called "Every 2 Minutes" will be running from September 30th until November 5th (a hint at a release window perhaps?), allowing you to win an Xbox One console by "banking" codes from packages of Dew and Doritos.

If you're at PAX you can win one on Sunday at a live event along with a bunch of other goodies, and there are over 100 QR codes signs hidden around the PAX Prime convention center that you can scan for points. You can also stop by the Dew/Doritos booth near the PAX queue room.

Yep, this is a thing.

Microsoft: Killer Instinct 'world's most generous demo'

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 02:00 AM PDT

Demolicious. That's what Microsoft thinks of Xbox One exclusive Killer Instinct. It recently released its pricing scheme for the fighter. You can download the game for free with one playable fighter and there are various amounts you can pay to unlock more content. You can drop $5 per fighter, get all six of the first wave plus early access to the first two DLC characters for $20, or pay $40 for the Ultra Edition.

Microsoft calls this "the world's most generous demo," but it is not free to play in the sense the term has taken on. Speaking to Eurogamer, creative director of first party published Xbox One games Ken Lobb said, "I just want to get as many people playing as I can."

The free part is, day one, you can download Jago for free and you get the whole game with Jago. The story mode comes later, but you get his full tutorial, full practice mode and you can go online and play against everybody. So you have the full game with just Jago.

A few months after launch, Microsoft will also switch Jago out as the free character, League of Legends style, allowing skinflints to potentially have a go at every character. At its most expensive, it seems Killer Instinct's first "season" (eight characters) will run you $40, while $20 still gets you all the characters. You can also play the game fairly extensively for free. It might go against your initial Killer Instincts, but when you think about it, it's not a bad model, right?

Nintendo president: 'meh' to PS4, Xbox One launch titles

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 01:00 AM PDT

How do you feel about the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One launch lineups? I'm not exactly digging what Microsoft's shoveling, but I'm happy enough with the PS4's slated games (Hohokum!). Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime is less impressed. In an interview with IGN, Fils-Aime didn't pull any punches.

It’s all about the games. The competitive systems have announced their launch lineups. I’m allowed to say ‘Meh.’ I look at our lineup of titles and I feel good about our lineup. We’ve got Zelda. We’ve got Mario. We’ve got Donkey Kong. In addition to great titles like Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101, I feel very good about our lineup, and I feel very good about the value proposition we’re putting out there for the consumer.

The Wii U does look like it's at its most valuable, what with the recent price drop and Wind Waker HD bundle, along with finally having a few more exclusive titles to play like the aforementioned Pikmin 3 and The Wonderful 101. It also doesn't take a Re-genius to figure out the console has suffered from a dearth of releases and poor sales.

Does the Wii U sing its sweet song to you more than the PS4 and Xbox One launch lineups?

Fallout: New Vegas fan film is bloody, scantily clad

Posted: 29 Aug 2013 11:00 PM PDT

I've yet to go through Fallout: New Vegas after being less than enthused by Fallout 3 -- though people keep telling me New Vegas is better, particularly if you didn't like Fallout 3 all that much. Accordingly. watching this fan film origin story of New Vegas' Legate Lanius felt a bit like that one time I stumbled on some people watching Game of Thrones. Amidst all these proper nouns I was more lost than a wastelander without a Pip Boy.

Still, the production quality is high and the film itself quite stylish and Lanius-ly done. It feels a little bit like 300; filled to the brim with gratuitous violence and sexy, tan, bare man chest. Mmm. I ve-guess that's all you need.
