The GameStick Android console will ship in September Posted: 29 Aug 2013 01:00 PM PDT Soon to be competing against the Ouya, the GameStick console will be launching in September (multiple sources point to the 30th) for $80. The console is basically a tiny HDMI stick that you plug into your TV and BAM -- it runs Android games. It touts a really sleek design that even houses the entire unit in the controller, which is pretty damn awesome. Right now you can snag one for pre-order at GameStop or Amazon, but those of you who backed the Kickstarter at the appropriate level should get yours sometime in the near future. I have no idea what to expect from this, but it seems like a rather humble project and I like the design, so I wish it the best. GameStick [Liliputing]

Shadow Warrior is up for pre-order Posted: 29 Aug 2013 12:00 PM PDT After the greatness that was Rise of the Triad, I'm kind of on an old-school FPS kick right now. Good thing Shadow Warrior is just around the corner with a September 26th release date, and now, you can pre-order it on Steam or a few other places (GOG, Humble Store, Get Games, GamersGate) for $39.99 ( €34.99 Western Europe, €24.99 Eastern Europe, £29.99 UK). It's a bit pricey, but if you pre-purchase it on Steam you'll get 15% off, as well as an extra in-game katana and a 75% off coupon for any current Devolver Digital game, or Flying Wild Hog's Hard Reset. I liked what I've played so far, but time will tell if it's worth that full asking price.

SimCity arrives on Macs this week Posted: 29 Aug 2013 11:00 AM PDT So, SimCity is finally coming to Macs this week for those of you who wanted it. No, not that SimCity -- this SimCity. You know, the one that caused all the ruckus because they tried to claim that the game had to be played online? Yeah, that one. It'll be available on Origin or other select digital retailers should you wish it pick it up. Although most of the PC server issues have been worked out by now (beware of the reports other of Mac issues though), most of us will never forget, and all of us will hope that it never happens again. It'll probably happen again.

Heihachi and Spawn confirmed for Soul Calibur II HD Posted: 29 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT Good news, Soul Calibur fans! It seems as if two parts of the deadly trio that is Heihachi (PS2), Spawn (Xbox) and Link (GameCube) will be headed to Soul Calibur II HD. Specifically, Spawn and Heihachi will be making it to both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game. There's no word on Link at all right now, which we can only presume is a confirmation that things didn't work out. Namco didn't tell us much more than that, instead just noting that this is the first time both characters would be playable in one version, and that Soul Calibur II HD is still scheduled to arrive in the fall of 2013. Considering Soul Calibur II is my favorite of the Soul games, I'm excited to see how the new netcode fares.

Posted: 29 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT [Pictured: a poor soul who barely made it out alive, holding the avatars of those who couldn't make it at all.] PAX is wonderful. But it's also a downright daunting experience for newcomers and veterans alike. I don't know a single person who just "goes to PAX." It requires planning. It causes stress. For example, I got my haircut last week, and the haircut lady told me I should look into special shampoo for thinning hair. Because of PAX! OK, so maybe that's just because I'm 31 and almost dead, but still. This shit is stressful. Luckily, I've been through this a couple times now, and I've got a couple quick tips for getting the most bang for your buck. Read more... |
50 Greenlight titles are on sale this weekend Posted: 29 Aug 2013 08:30 AM PDT Yesterday Valve announced a bumper batch of 100 new titles were approved via Greenlight and today Valve cut the price of 50 games that have come through Greenlight. Some of my favourite games this year have come through via Greenlight, and regardless of some valid concerns, Some of the highlights include Papers Please, Kentucky Route Zero, Rogue Legacy, Incredipede, McPixel, Receiver and Interstellar Marines. There's also quite a few recently released titles that are getting some buzz including Shelter, Divekick, Dream and Game Dev Tycoon. There's at least 5 or 6 titles I want to play so this sale is pretty timely.

Prison Architect update kicks off with a sale Posted: 29 Aug 2013 08:00 AM PDT The latest Prison Architect update sees some significant additions infiltrating your lovely prisons. Alpha 13 gives prisoners the ability to dig tunnels, giving guards more things to worry about. Introversion's Mark Morris explains that it's a feature that has been ready for a while, but the studio wasn't ready to release it until they had put together a better detection mechanism. Less noticeable, but arguably more important, is the new punishment table, which gives players the ability to decide how to punish infractions. According to Morris, Prison Architect has focused more on looking after the needs of prisoners, but with the new punishment table, you can rule your prison with an iron fist. If this all sounds like a good lark to you, Prison Architect is 40 percent off on Steam as part of the weekend deal. Note that it's still an Early Access title, so expect some kinks and frequent updates.

Hear the difference between 360 and Xbox One voice chat Posted: 29 Aug 2013 07:30 AM PDT It appears as if the Xbox One will be getting a major upgrade in voice chat quality, and you can see the difference right here, or on Major Nelson's blog. Due to the integration of Skype's audio codec and a better controller (with an improved wireless data transfer rate), a higher quality voice output is achieved. Major Nelson notes that this will not only work with Skype, but multiplayer as well. Xbox Live [Major Nelson] Read more... |
SMITE is definitely worth your time Posted: 29 Aug 2013 07:00 AM PDT It took me quite a while to come around to SMITE. Despite the fact that it was getting rave reviews from some of my Twitter followers, I was already knee-deep in a number of MOBAs, keeping up with Dota 2 and League of Legends most of all. But once I actually sat down and spent an afternoon with Hi-Rez Studios' latest, I couldn't put it down. SMITE not only bucks a few MOBA trends in a unique way, but it's also a hell of a lot of fun to play. Read more... |
Play as the 'older' versions of Left 4 Dead's cast Posted: 29 Aug 2013 06:00 AM PDT That's Francis up there. Yeah. At one point in time, he and the other three survivors of Left for Dead looked ... how do I put this politely? Iteration is important, let's just say. Valve has graciously released the original character models for use in Left 4 Dead 2. "It was an interesting walk back through our content tree to find all the various pieces and versions," writes Valve. "Depending on your definition of the old models, some of these may vary in some slight detail as we work in an iterative process and never internally defined a version of these models. They have always just been Zoey, Louis, Bill, and Francis to us." You can find Zoey, Bill, Louis, and yes, bearded Francis, over on the Steam Workshop. The Gang is Getting Back Together [Left 4 Dead]

Nintendo Download: Pokemon Rumble U Posted: 29 Aug 2013 05:30 AM PDT There isn't a whole lot today in this week's Nintendo Download, but there are a few heavy-hitters. Pokemon Rumble U makes its debut on the Wii U eShop for $17.99, and it features real-life toys as a companion to its gameplay. Rayman Legends is also available on September 3rd, and the original Legend of Zelda drops today on the Wii U Virtual Console for $4.99. If you want an opinion on Rayman Legends you can check out Jim's review, and if you're thinking about picking up Zelda you can see how it holds up in my Zelda retrospective. On the 3DS side, Wario Land 3 finally comes to the Virtual Console, alongside of a Bit. Trip Saga discount ($4.99 until September 15th). Should you want to see how Wario Land 3 fares, check out my Wario retrospective. Read more... |
Slow your DICE roll: Battlefield not being annualized Posted: 29 Aug 2013 05:00 AM PDT After EA decided to pull Medal of Honor from its stables, there was fear that Battlefied would be annualized to continue to try and contend with the Call of Duty juggernaut. Speaking to Videogamer, Battlefield 4 executive producer Patrick Bach said, “I think the core Battlefield idea that we’re working on at DICE is… We can’t build a game at DICE every year.” Good. Because, guess what? I really need Mirror's Edge 2's development to not have excess Battlefield giblets clog the cogs, you know? Yes, I'm still hoping to not be disappointed by that one. Bach did note, however, that demand for Battlefield is higher than ever, and he hopes that things like Battlefield Premium serve as a model for a way to keep providing content without having to release a full new game each year. He even mused on Battlefield as a singular platform with content release, like an MMO, but I wouldn't hold my breath for that one coming from EA, a company that annualized sports game releases that are sometimes literal reskinned roster updates. Maybe they'll just put another studio on it. Battlefield may not be annualized, DICE “can’t build a game every year,” says Bach [VG 24/7]

Always Sometimes Monsters is an RPG about life and love Posted: 29 Aug 2013 04:30 AM PDT Hotline Miami publisher Devolver Digital is just bringing us all sorts of good stuff. Recently we learned it would be publishing Gods Will Be Watching, which looks like a pixel version of The Thing. It's publishing the rad Luftrausers, and now it has announced it will be publishing the experimental indie RPG Always Sometimes Monsters, which you'll be able to check out at PAX.
Out of luck and money? I've never had either. Sounds good to me. Developer Vagabond Dog's Justin Amirkhani said, “Concepts of right and wrong can easily whittle away within the game, so we are looking forward to seeing what choices players make during their unique journeys.” Sounds good, too. It's always sometimes interesting to see how choice and divergence are handled. Also, props to whoever designed the title art. Great stuff.

Podtoid 267: Val Kilmer Is An Occult Son Of A Bitch Posted: 29 Aug 2013 04:00 AM PDT On this week's pre-PAX Podtoid, the gang gear up for their next-day traveling, mostly by talking about Ben Affleck, and why the sorcerous Val Kilmer is the Once and Future Batman. There's also discussion of Jonathan lifting his toga to show us his crotchless panties, and a very special song for a very special boy. As if that wasn't enough, there's confusion over what Podtoid is doing at PAX Prime, there's debate over the Nintendo 2DS, there's a bit of talk about Wonderful 101 and the Nvidia Shield, while WayForward decides to troll the question segment. As ever, you can subscribe to us on iTunes and RSS, buy our Android App or download directly!

Every game from Fable dev will be 'online focused' Posted: 29 Aug 2013 03:30 AM PDT At gamescom, Dale brought us a preview of Xbox One exclusive Fable Legends, which eschews pets and sidekicks for full, four player cooperative play. You can also apparently play as the game's villain, setting traps and controlling minions. As a fan of Gauntlet and Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, it doesn't sound like the worst thing, though the fact that you'll be saddled with three AI if you opt for solo play is a bummer. It seems the idea of online play is going to factor completely in Fable Legends developer Lionhead Studios' efforts going forward. Talking to DigitalSpy, studio head John Needham said, "'every game' in future will have 'connected' elements." Needham, who comes from Star Trek Online and City of Heroes developer Cryptic, cites inspiration from Journey and Dark Souls in innovating the online space.
I'll tell you what. They'll talk about how they banged my mother last night. Lionhead now an online-focused studio starting with 'Fable Legends' [DigitalSpy]

Here is Grand Theft Auto V's final launch trailer Posted: 29 Aug 2013 03:26 AM PDT It feels like we've been waiting for Grand Theft Auto V for forever and on September 15th, the wait is over. But we still have a few weeks yet -- until then, you can catch Rockstar's latest launch trailer for the game, which briefly details the overarching story that links the game's three protagonists together. A bunch of us here at Destructoid are going to be playing GTA V when it hits next month, so expect tons of coverage beyond the inevitably controversial review!

Play Pokemon, Zelda early at Wii U & 3DS mall tour Posted: 29 Aug 2013 03:00 AM PDT Nintendo is bringing its games to twelve US malls from August 31 to November 3. Aside from games that have already released, like Pikmin 3 and the fabulous Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, you'll be able to check out Pokemon X and Y (likely the demo I played a few weeks back), The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD. The tour is hitting malls in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Detroit, Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Denver, Tempe, Chicago, Milwaukee, Minnesota, Tulsa, and Kansas City. If you're interested and around those cities, you can find the exact dates and times here. You'll also be able to scope out these same games at PAX, if you're among the lucky badgers hitting up Seattle this weekend, so maybe that will mall-ify some of you. Anyone going to down some mall-t liquor and brave a trek into a fluorescent wasteland just to play some Pokemon? Do events like that still draw in crowds in the digital age? Perhaps it's aimed to capture children's attention, to their parents' chagrin? [via Neogaf]

You got your Terraria in my Edge of Space Posted: 29 Aug 2013 02:00 AM PDT It's no secret that HandyMan Studios' Edge of Space has taken a few cues from the 2D open-world darling Terraria, but now the two titles have even more in common than their similar mechanics. Skeletron, the boss monster who guards the dungeon in Terraria, is receiving some cybernetic upgrades to become Omegatron in Edge of Space, bearing a striking resemblance to that robot-skeleton-thing in Contra III. PAX Prime 2013 attendees will be among the first to experience the crossover content, but those not attending can still try the game out on Steam Early Access. Jake Crane, lead designer of Edge of Space promises that there is still "cool stuff planned" for the title's future. Omegatron Prime, perhaps? Read more... |
Battle Princess of Arcadias gets an extended trailer Posted: 29 Aug 2013 01:30 AM PDT Battle Princess of Arcadias is still a thing, and from what I can see in this new trailer, it's coming along very nicely. The PS3 exclusive boasts some pretty incredible art, and the gameplay style is incredibly reminiscent of Odin Sphere, which is always a good thing. In this extended video you can see quite a bit of gameplay variety with the game's playable characters, including some hints at technical maneuvers like air juggling and launchers. Even if it doesn't see an international release, I think an import is in the cards for me.

Running the length of Liberty City while most wanted Posted: 29 Aug 2013 01:00 AM PDT This weeks challenge is in Grand Theft Auto IV, in which I need to run across all three islands, on foot, to get to the airport, all whilst having a six star wanted rating. Liberty City is a big place and there are many trigger happy cops in my way! If you've got any ideas for future challenges you'd like me to have a go at, feel free to leave them in the comments!

Tiny Tina demonstrates the power of fantasy Posted: 29 Aug 2013 12:00 AM PDT I'd all but forgotten about Borderlands 2 at this point. My wife and I stopped playing long ago, half of our season passes never explored. And yet, it's allure remains strangely potent upon viewing this latest short-form video which acts as a prologue for Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep. I want to go there in spite of feeling less than exuberant about any of the content which has come before.

Final Fantasy XIV plans 'major update every three months' Posted: 28 Aug 2013 11:00 PM PDT Square Enix is really sorry about Final Fantasy XIV, but Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is looking like everything the former should have been. That includes regular updates rather than rushing to finish the PS3 version and deal with the shambles that was the initial release. Speaking to the PlayStation Blog, A Realm Reborn Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida talked about plans to support the MMORPG, which finally released this past Tuesday. Yoshida said players can expect, "a major update every three months once the game has been released," and that they would be "continuously adding large-scale content." These updates do seem significant. The first is slated to include, "a large-scale housing system, as well as 'The Wolves’ Den' -- the first ever PvP content in the series," and "new dungeons, a new daily quest system, new Primal battles, [and] extensions to the main story." These of course are in addition to long term, full expansion packs. Are you still down to pay for an MMO in the F2P world? Still feeling too burnt by XIV?

Wind Waker HD gets a limited edition, Ganondorf figure Posted: 28 Aug 2013 10:00 PM PDT Nintendo is producing a limited edition of The Wind Waker HD that comes with a cool-looking figure of baddie Ganondorf, Tomopop reports. As of now, the limited edition is only officiallt announced for European release, but GameStop has it listed for a mere $60, only $10 above the price of the game. I'm always talking up my love for Wind Waker's Link, so I'm a bit disappointed that cute little scamp isn't getting immortalized, but the Ganondorf statue looks alright. I was never terribly into collector's editions, either, beyond the initial glint of novelty in seeing the cool things they come packed with. For those on my side, there are some more practical options. You can download Wind Waker HD two weeks prior to the retail release date. Or, if you don't have a Wii U, nab the Wind Waker HD bundle at the new price of $299. It comes with a download code for the game and Hyrule Historia. Anyone pulling the trigger on the cheaper Wii U bundle? Anyone hell bent on displaying Ganondorf on your mantle? Wind Waker HD Limited Edition includes Ganondorf figure [Tomopop]

A spelunking shopper's delight - The Daily Spelunk Posted: 28 Aug 2013 09:00 PM PDT In today's Daily Spelunk, Jordan and I discovered an unbelievable string of shops running through the entire challenge. Not only that, but there's a ton of cash to spend in them, and Jordan somehow managed to resist the urge to kill the first one he saw (don't worry -- it doesn't last). Meanwhile, I learn a little something about respecting boundaries, though I'm still not entirely sure where those boundaries lie. As noted in the video, we're headed off to PAX, so this is the last episode of The Daily Spelunk for this week. We'll be back with more on Wednesday morning.

Grand Theft Auto V's amazing soundtrack finally revealed Posted: 28 Aug 2013 06:00 PM PDT Rockstar's soundtrack supervisor Ivan Pavlovich spoke with Rolling Stone to finally reveal what we can expect out of the soundtrack. There's going to about "20 movies worth of score" featured in the game comprised of 240 licensed songs, 15 radio stations, and two talk radio stations. Rolling Stone's article also has a ton of samples straight from the game of how some of the stations will sound like. There's a Mexican, pop, classics, 80s funk, classic rock, and way more stations you can expect. Plus on top of all this is the original score that was done for GTA V, a first for the series in fact. I heard some of these songs when I went to check out the game and it sounds so good. It helps that Woody Jackson, who scored Red Dead Redemption and L.A. Noire, did some of the original songs here too. Inside the 'Grand Theft Auto V' Soundtrack [Rolling Stone]

The Daily Hotness: Off to PAX we go Posted: 28 Aug 2013 04:59 PM PDT If you hadn't noticed from the several posts on the front page, and the droves of people in the comments and forums being extremely excited, PAX Prime 2013 is almost here. As I'm writing this, I really should be sleeping to wake up at five tomorrow morning for my flight. PAX PAX PAX PAX PAX PAX PAX! Otherwise, Conrad and Jordan continued their Daily Spelunk, Steven made a Killer is Dead burger, Nintendo released some bonkers handheld, and oh my gosh PAX is almost here!
