So the 2DS is actually just one big screen Posted: 28 Aug 2013 04:00 PM PDT The 2DS, that's a thing! It's aimed for a younger audience, and it cuts out all the 3D stuff. And as it turns out, those two screens are actually one big screen. That's according to US Gamer in an effort to cut down costs. The appearance of two screen is a simulated one, and the case is designed to make it look like two whole screens like the 3DS. So yeah, even the upper screen is technically a touch screen, but it's protected by a layer of plastic. Plus, there's no game that would recognize that the top screen can be an interface now. That said, it'll be interesting to see how modders rework the 2DS. Oh, So That's Nintendo's Next Move [USGamer]

Borderlands 2 Game of the Year Edition out in October Posted: 28 Aug 2013 03:00 PM PDT And here's that confirmation we were waiting on. The Borderlands 2 Game of the Year Edition will see a North American release on October 8, 2013. Everywhere else gets it on Oct. 11. Unfortunately, it's not as complete as we would've liked -- a consequence of having so much damn DLC -- though there is a heck of a lot of stuff packed into this $59.99 package:
I shudder to think about what kind of time investment it would take to burn through all of this.

Combo Crewtiful Joe: Beloved Joe back in mobile game Posted: 28 Aug 2013 02:00 PM PDT What's with the recent trend of bringing back beloved franchises in ways that just seem to make fans more sad than anything? Earlier this year Capcom announced it was releasing Breath of Fire 6 to fans waiting over a decade with bated breath. Ended up being a browser game. Now Capcom is whetting our collective Viewtiful Joe appetite by allowing him to appear in mobile beat-'em-up Combo Crew. Combo Crew's developer, The Game Bakers, tweeted that Joe would be coming to their game "soon-ish." Fine, Capcom. Kill Clover and then license its characters to mobile beat-'em-ups. Never forget. Maybe Combo Crew is really good, though. I have no idea. How do you view this move? Is Combo Crewtiful Joe enough incentive for you to comb over the game? Is this move too Combo Crude? @TheGameBakers [Twitter via NeoGAF]

Crytek bringing free-to-play FPS Warface to Xbox 360 Posted: 28 Aug 2013 01:00 PM PDT Okay. I'm willing to admit it -- for as silly as the name Warface is, it's fairly memorable. In a sea of free-to-play first-person shooters, this is among the first (and only!) to immediately come to mind. Not that I've ever bothered to play the game, which seems to perpetually be in beta. In addition to the existing PC version, Crytek intends to release Warface on Xbox 360. That'll happen in early 2014 and, unsurprisingly, this title will be "free-to-play with [Xbox Live] Gold." How painful it must've been to have typed that up for the official website.

Saints Row IV sells a million copies in first week Posted: 28 Aug 2013 12:00 PM PDT In its first week of being available at retail, Saints Row IV has sold more than one million copies. Sold, not shipped. According to publisher Deep Silver, the PC version of the game tripled the first-week sales of its predecessor Saints Row: The Third. I'm not terribly far into IV yet -- far enough to have collected hundreds upon hundreds of those damn orbs and access to most of the powers -- but I'm loving it. This is exactly what I want out of my open-world games, and the success is deserved. That said, I'm both curious and anxious to see how Volition will ultimately follow up with the next game. Where do you go from here?

Game/Show is how PBS talks about videogames Posted: 28 Aug 2013 11:30 AM PDT PBS's Idea Channel has talked about games in the past, at least once or twice. In fact, the show has an entire section on YouTube discussing games. It seems like the section does well enough for itself, as the people behind Idea Channel have debuted a new series that is "focused exclusively on the relationship between videogames and modern culture" called Game/Show. Episode One examines the undying popularity of Mario and his contemporaries through a discussion of economics, psychology, and the hero's journey. It's a very PBS take on the topic of videogames, but I can't help but wish they had gone just a little bit further with it. This isn't the first time somebody has discussed the monomyth story archetype with respect to videogames, and it certainly won't be the last. Still, I've got high hopes for this new series, and I'm looking forward to learning something new from it, while still spending time watching videos on the Internet about videogames.

Live show: TMNT: Out of the Shadows Posted: 28 Aug 2013 10:30 AM PDT [Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.] I may be taking off for PAX tomorrow afternoon, and have been insanely busy, but I'll be damned if I'm not going to get at least one live show in this week. The original plan for this evening was to showcase Killer Is Dead in its entirety, however, I'm going to save that for next week when I have a bit more time to dive into it. Instead, I'll be jamming out on the recently released Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. If you've been curious about this game, come check it out for yourself tonight on Mash Tactics as we hop into some online co-op, foot-clan bashing shenanigans! QotD: In your opinion, what cartoon would make for an awesome video game?

A la cartridge: Killer is Dead's Mondo Burger Posted: 28 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT Food is good. Videogames are good. Food inspired by videogames are doubleplusgood. It's simple science. Science and art. The third episode of Steven Hansen's À la cartridge is inspired by Killer is Dead. In my quest to become the Alton Brown of videogames, will I become videogames' Guy Fieri? After last week's vegetarian reprieve, Pasta di Pikmin, we're taking a return to meat with the Killer is Dead-inspired Mondo Burger. Grasshopper's new game dropped yesterday and a lot of you are really interested in it, if yesterday's exploded comment section on my feature is any indication. I invite you to take a break from that madness and, Killer Instead, cook yourself something nice. This is a simple, powerful burger with some teeth to it. The full recipe is below. Killer is fed. Nintendo 2DS weighs less than the 3DS XL Posted: 28 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT Nintendo has divulged the specs of the newly-announced 2DS, and there are a few tidbits worth bringing up. The screen real estate is the same as it is with the regular 3DS, though the funny-looking handheld does support slightly better battery life -- 3.5 to 5.5 hours for 3DS games compared to 3 to 5 hours on 3DS, and 3.5 to 6.5 hours on 3DS XL. There's no power-saving mode, though a power adapter is included with the 2DS and it's got a dedicated switch for enabling sleep mode. For as big as the device is, it weighs 260g compared to 235g (3DS) and 336g (3DS XL). Other than that, the one other thing to really jump out at me here is the inclusion of mono speakers. Better play with headphones. The more I've thought about the 2DS, the more I've come to see its brilliance. Can't wait to see how many units Nintendo can move when it launches on October 12, 2013. An irresistible temptation - The Daily Spelunk Posted: 28 Aug 2013 08:00 AM PDT Today's Daily Spelunk is a bit of a shameful one. With a jetpack appearing in the second level of the mines, both Jordan and I found to impossible to pass up what should be a golden opportunity. This, of course, leads only to hijinks and death.

Reggie says the 2DS is for five- to six-year-olds Posted: 28 Aug 2013 07:30 AM PDT With Nintendo's surprising announcement of the 2DS today, some people are wondering who exactly the device was created for. While the price point of $129 is appealing, the slate form and omission of 3D were curious changes. It turns out that Nintendo had a younger audience in mind when it designed the 2DS. Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of Nintendo of America, told IGN that the 2DS' target audience is "that first-time handheld gaming consumer." Nintendo recommends that children be at least seven years of age to use the 3DS, so Fils-Aime says that the 2DS creates an opportunity for five- and six-year-olds. "How do we approach that as one target? How do we get more people playing Nintendo games," Fils-Aime asked rhetorically. "That helped spur the idea of the 2DS. Let's have the consumer have access to all of these great games at a dramatically lower price point," he continued. Nintendo Announces 2DS [IGN]

Review: Call of Duty Black Ops II: Apocalypse Posted: 28 Aug 2013 07:00 AM PDT We've already had three quarters of the Season Pass on offer so far in Black Ops II's lifespan, and we're finally on the last bit of DLC. Apocalypse is a curious prospect, with two remakes, two brand new maps, and a zombies map that features giant robots with the reunion of the original four World at War stars. But while Treyarch is generally known for their original map design, they played it a bit too safe here, and the package falls a bit flat. Read more... |
BioWare's Dragon Age save-import tool sounds great Posted: 28 Aug 2013 06:30 AM PDT Now that the Dragon Age series has adopted the Frostbite engine and will be releasing on next-generation consoles, the matter of transferring players' save data to Dragon Age: Inquisition is not a simple one. But, for us, it will be -- even for brand new players. That's thanks to the Dragon Age Keep, an initiative that allows you to customize your world -- your decisions from Origins and Dragon Age II, even if you didn't play those titles -- and then import it into the upcoming game. "An additional benefit offered by moving to the cloud is being able to fix issues in plot logic, which historically we have not been able to do because of client side complexity or platform holder limits," writes executive producer Mark Darrah. "Under the hood, the Keep has a logic validator which ensures you’ll always have a valid world state free from errors and conflicts." As it stands, BioWare hasn't figured out how to incorporate existing save files to populate the Keep, but that is the end goal. Sign-ups for the beta, which is expected to start in early 2014, are currently open on the Keep website. The Dragon Age Keep [BioWare -- Thanks, Glowbear]

Nintendo says it's committed to 3D despite the 2DS Posted: 28 Aug 2013 06:00 AM PDT While the Nintendo 2DS will play 3DS games, it won't support 3D. It stands to reason that such functionality isn't nearly as important as Nintendo made it out to be. That's not how Nintendo executive VP of sales and marketing Scott Moffitt sees it, though. Speaking to GamesIndustry International, he says that "our fan feedback, gamer feedback, has been that they very much enjoy 3D as a feature. Games like Super Mario 3D Land play fabulously well in 3D. There's a lot of great 3D experiences that gamers have come to love. We don't want to walk away from that at all. "They also will play well in 2D, and it allows us to get to a price point that we couldn't get to with the 3D screen," he continued. "If we can get to that in another way... If you're asking me if we could get to a price point of $129 with 3D functionality, it didn't look like it was possible. That's the reason. It's less about wanting to have 3D in and it's more about trying to get to the value price point that's going to allow us to open up that next part of the market." There are indeed some games that greatly benefit from 3D, but, more than anything, it's the 2DS' physical design, not lack of 3D, that has me scrunching my face in horror. Asked if Nintendo had any plans for people who want both systems and the option to transfer digital purchases between them, Moffitt said "We haven't solved that yet." Further pushing the point that the 2DS isn't intended for many of us, the executive went on to say "I would just challenge... If you have a 3DS and you enjoy playing it there on a bigger screen... I wouldn't think we would expect you to be part of the buyer base." Nintendo: "We don't want to walk away" from 3D gaming [GamesIndustry International]

Crytek upped Ryse's AI difficulty to offset QTEs Posted: 28 Aug 2013 05:30 AM PDT Ryse hasn't exactly been perceived as the Xbox One's darling as Microsoft had hoped, and Crytek seems aware of the criticisms. After the game's less than warm reception at E3, the developers took steps to alter the most common source of complaints -- the quicktime events. Well, sort of. Speaking to Eurogamer at gamescom, chief designer PJ Esteves explained how Crytek made changes to Ryse's combat system. "The QTE thing, yeah, we totally get it. We put all this damn time into the facial animation and what do you see? An X button," Esteves lamented. "We knew the mechanic worked within our combat system, so we're keeping the mechanic, but internally and with gamers' reaction we were like, yeah, it feels too QTE," he continued. Crytek took a multipronged approach to rectifying this. The first step was to increase the AI difficulty. "When you're doing something for E3 trying to get our message straight, maybe we dumbed down the AI a little too much, but when people play it now, they'll say 'holy crap, these guys are surrounding me.' When they surround you, there are behaviors and attack patterns where they're trying to work together, which is a new dynamic in this sort of crowd control combat game. You're not fighting one individual at a time. These guys are actually trying to work together to take you down, and you use it to survive," Esteves said. The other significant change that the developers made was the omission of button prompts to cue executions. Now, a colored outline corresponding to an Xbox One face button will appear around the enemies. "When you play it now it feels fresh. We still give you the hints: the blue outline or the yellow outline, but once we removed the buttons and went with the outline, aesthetically it felt better. You start seeing the facial animation. You still have this loop, okay, what button is it? And hit the timing. So it just made it a bit dynamic," Esteves explained. Crytek combats Ryse QTE concern with improved AI [Eurogamer]

Wind Waker HD will launch two weeks early digitally Posted: 28 Aug 2013 05:00 AM PDT When combing over Nintendo's fall lineup, did you notice one major detail regarding a certain waker of winds? Although Nintendo has confirmed an October 4th release date for Wind Waker HD, it appears as if there's a special caveat involved for digital adopters.Yep, the digital version of Wind Waker will instead launch on September 20th, a whole two weeks early. It's a neat idea for sure to increase digital sales -- one they've already done with Super Luigi U. Nintendo also revealed the full details for the upcoming 3DS game The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, as it's launching on November 22nd for $39.99. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say, "I want both right now!"

Valve approves 100 new titles on Steam Greenlight Posted: 28 Aug 2013 04:30 AM PDT Valve has been candid about Steam Greenlight not being where it ought to be yet. There's been talk of wanting to fix bottlenecks in the system so that more games can get approved which, more recently, has resulted in more frequent, smaller batches. Today, the company is letting 100 titles through as a way to stress test backend improvements. The full list is over here, but I'll throw out some quick, I-just-woke-up highlights: Chroma Squad, C-Wars, Croixleur, Delver's Drop, Escape Goat, Legend of Iya, Mutant Mudds, Oniken, Shantae: Risky's Revenge, Super Amazing Wagon Adventure, Teslagrad, and Toribash. "This latest milestone is both a celebration of the progress we've made behind the scenes and a stress test of our systems," writes Valve. "Future batches are not likely to be as large, but if everything goes smoothly we should be able to continue increasing the throughput of games from Greenlight to the Steam store." [Thanks, Jake]

Rayman Legends launch trailer sounds like woah Posted: 28 Aug 2013 03:45 AM PDT Rayman Legends is pretty great, so sayeth Jim Sterling, local authority on this sort of thing. So is this launch trailer, which shows off the gorgeous platforming action, and up to a quartet of characters moving to the sounds of Michael Franti & Spearhead. PAX-goers can get a hands-on with Rayman Legends this weekend. Everyone else will have to wait for September 3, for the game's proper release. Adjust your hype accordingly.

Seriously: Nintendo announces new 2DS system Posted: 28 Aug 2013 03:27 AM PDT There's a new handheld from Nintendo called the 2DS. It comes out on October 12 in red or blue, priced at $129.99. No 3D! Just 2D. It plays all currently available 3DS games, but doesn't have a screen that shows 3D. You had better have some gangsta-ass pockets for this thing. It comes in a slate-type form factor and has all the same hardware features as the 3DS (touch screen, controls, etc.), and still has backwards compatibility with all DS games. Wireless? Still good. Just not 3D. Nintendo will begin showing off the 2DS this October in a tour of malls across North America. Read more... |
The Wonderful 101's sales don't look good so far Posted: 28 Aug 2013 03:15 AM PDT Depending on who you talk to, this is either sad, or expected, but the Wii U exclusive The Wonderful 101 has sold a mere 5,258 copies in Japan. For reference, it's also completely missed a top 20 spot on the UK charts. Thankfully, Nintendo still has Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (still? Yes!) and Pikmin 3 all still chugging on the Japanese charts. Although a fair bit of international reviews have popped up across the net for Wonderful 101, the US is held to a different set of requirements, so expect our full review from Jonathan Holmes shortly before the September 15th launch! Bravely Default For the Sequel expansion announced Posted: 28 Aug 2013 03:00 AM PDT Stupid name for this expansion, but the original game had a stupid name. Who cares? I still want both. A scan of a new spread in the latest Weekly Jump confirms that Bravely Default For the Sequel will come to Japan. This is an expansion of the original Square Enix 3DS RPG, adding more events and new controls, and things like battle tweaks and more save slots. And speaking of save data, it seems players will be able to use their original game data for this expansion. Despite the name, this does not sound like a proper sequel. Bravely Default For the Sequel comes to Japan on December 5, priced at 2,900 yen via eShop and 4,990 for a cart copy. We know we're at least getting the original. Hopefully this will follow.

Fangamer X Attract Mode: Art, indie games, music, drinks Posted: 28 Aug 2013 02:30 AM PDT After the success of last year's Fangamer VERSUS Attract Mode party, they're returning with the bigger and better version, set for this weekend during PAX in Seattle. Fangamer X Attract Mode will feature hot new games from 17-BIT (GALAK-Z) and CAPY (Synchroma), music from Danimal Cannon, Super Soul Bros, and virt (he'll perform some cuts from DuckTales Remastered), and art (see our gallery) from a ton of talented artists, including our friend Ashley Davis. To recap: awesome art show with awesome indie games and awesome musical acts. Oh, and videogame themed mixed drinks are also returning. This all goes down on Saturday, August 31 at 1927 Events, which is just a few blocks away from the convention center. It starts at 7p.m. and runs through midnight, with admission set at $10. You can grab tickets at Fangamer's PAX booth as well as at the door. Note that you do NOT have to be a PAX attendee to attend Fangamer X Attract Mode. Again, tickets are available at the door. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow Ultimate Edition out on PC Posted: 28 Aug 2013 01:30 AM PDT Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Ultimate Edition is now available on Steam for $29.99. It brings all the content of the current gen console game plus all the DLC add-on content and turned up graphics (HD, 60 FPS). I'm betting it'll be the best version of an already incredible game. Yep, I said incredible. I loved it, and I'm looking forward to its sequel. Jim? Not so much. In fact, if you watch the extended trailer on the Steam page for this game, you'll see that almost every popular games media outlet was quoted. Not us, though. Ha! Still, I'll be glad to play this with turned up PC visuals. What about you?

Layton series has sold over 15 million units Posted: 28 Aug 2013 12:00 AM PDT Level-5 has kicked the fans in the collective nuts with the complete tonal shift that is Layton 7. That must mean the games are on their last legs and can no longer make bank on Nintendo handhelds alone, right? Not likely if these facts and figures are to be believed: the entire Layton series has sold a staggering 15 million units worldwide. Riddle me that! Another Level-5 franchise that has performed well at 6.5 million units sold is Inazuma Eleven, the anime-flavored soccer RPG series that has only been released in Japan and Europe. Next on the list is Ni no Kuni, whose worldwide PS3 version and Japan-exclusive DS version combine for a modest 1.4 million. I'm telling ya, Ni no Kuni DS needs to be localized on eShop, pronto! Finally, the six digital Guild releases -- from Liberation Maiden to Attack of the Friday Monsters -- have been downloaded 400,000 times in total, half of those sales coming from the West. Sounds like a success to me! Level-5 Sales: Professor Layton Series Sells 15 Million Units, Ni No Kuni 1.4 Million [Siliconera]

Layton 7 for 3DS and mobile is not MY Layton Posted: 27 Aug 2013 10:00 PM PDT I... I brought this upon myself. I said that Layton Brothers: Mystery Room was a great game. I said it was an excellent iOS companion to the traditional Layton series. I never should have had faith that a major gaming company wouldn't try to spoil a good thing. Level-5 has decided to pull a Breath of Fire 6 with the latest main entry in the Layton series. At the recent Level-5 Vision 2013 event in Japan, Layton 7 was revealed as a 3DS / iOS / Android puzzler in which you play as a dog or an old man or a f*ckin' zombie, and you earn points by doing... something. Sonic comic writer will play Lost World for charity Posted: 27 Aug 2013 08:00 PM PDT My homeboy David Oxford, writer at The Mega Man Network and and fellow editor on NF Magazine, has planned a special charity event alongside Ian Flynn, lead writer on Archie's Mega Man and Sonic the Hedgehog comic series. For 24 hours beginning Saturday, October 26, the duo will take to TwitchTV and play Sonic Lost World on Wii U through its entirety. They'll shoot the sh*t, take questions about the Archie comics or anything else, and accept donations for the SickKids Foundation. Current event sponsors include NF Magazine and UDON Entertainment, who may be offering some tasty raffle prizes. Maybe you'll win a copy of The History of Sonic The Hedgehog, which will receive a second hardcover printing soon as well as a softcover one. David and Ian are targeting a modest $1000-to-$1500 goal, and you can even pre-donate right now.
