Flight combat game Strike Vector coming in 2014 Posted: 27 Aug 2013 04:00 PM PDT You have my attention, Strike Vector. This multiplayer-centric air combat game jumps between first- and third-person flying, all while offering some high intensity action. It looks absolutely insane, and after a successful six week Steam Greenlight campaign the game is about to reach Alpha Stage. As for release, the four-man team expects this one to arrive sometime in early 2014. Yeah, all this is by a team of four! Read more... |
Get your Hatsune Miku on at PAX Prime Posted: 27 Aug 2013 03:00 PM PDT Sega will be at PAX Prime this week, and they're bringing the new Sonic game with them! Lost World will be playable on the Wii U and 3DS. I'm actually interested in seeing this one, as I'm hopeful there can be at least one good Sonic game this generation. What else? Well Total War: Rome II, Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F, and Heroki (a new action title for mobile and tablets) will all be playable too. Sega also tends to give away some cool swag items, so it'll definitely be worth swinging by their booth at PAX.

These are the Xbox One games you can play at PAX Posted: 27 Aug 2013 02:00 PM PDT Seattle is the home of Microsoft, so of course they'll have stuff to show off at PAX Prime this weekend. Specifically, Xbox One games. You'll be able to go hands-on with Ryse: Son of Rome, Killer Instinct, Forza 5, and Battlefield 4. Plus there will be one other game you can play, but they're not saying what exactly yet. I think I know what it's going to be, and if it's what I think it is, well, I'd recommend you not waste anytime waiting for Ryse. Well even if it's not what I'm thinking it is don't wait for Ryse anyway. It's horrible. Other titles you can expect to see, but not play, include Kinect Sports Rivals, Dead Rising 3, Project Spark, and Fable Anniversary. There's also going to be stuff with Halo 4 Global Championship if that's your jam. Check out Major Nelson's site for the full details on all the Xbox One happenings.

Watch ships blow up things in Assassin's Creed IV Posted: 27 Aug 2013 01:00 PM PDT Our latest look at Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag shows off some of the naval fort gameplay. Here you have to use your ship to take out other ships, and more importantly, take out the naval forts. Once you weaken the defenses, you'll have to storm the fort on foot in order to completely take it over. Succeed and the fort is yours. That's the short story. There's way more going on, and game director Ashraf Ismail gives a play by play of how players will go about taking on naval forts. Check out our preview on the latest Assassin's Creed to see what else is new and cool.

Little Galaxy planet hops on Android and iOS Posted: 27 Aug 2013 12:00 PM PDT One of my favorite memories of Chad Concelmo is when I stayed at his home overnight and woke up the next morning to find him playing Super Mario Galaxy, cackling hysterically to himself while he tried to make Mario orbit one of the planetoids and ignored whatever his actual goal was. Good times. That memory was immediately brought back when I watched the trailer for Little Galaxy. Truly, there are only a few common threads between the small mobile title and Nintendo's Wii juggernaut. The environments are delightfully colorful and the gameplay revolves around jumping between tiny planets with their own gravitational pull and collecting multicolored trinkets. Little Galaxy is restricted to only two dimensions and is a one touch game, but it looks like it could be a fun little diversion every now and then. Read more... |
The DTOID Show: GTA V, TES Online, & Goodbye MS Points! Posted: 27 Aug 2013 11:30 AM PDT Greetings, internet citizens! Max was out of the office today, so I grabbed Techfeed's Scott Bromley (and fellow host of The Comedy Button) to chat with me about GTA V's Collector's Edition, the rumored-but-not-yet-announced Borderlands 2 GOTY Edition, the phasing out of MS Points, and whether or not you'll be required to use magic in The Elder Scrolls Online. We've also got details on the must-see panels and parties of PAX Prime 2013, so if you plan on attending this year - listen up!

Samurai Gunn to see wide release on PC, PS4, and Vita Posted: 27 Aug 2013 11:00 AM PDT If you're out of the loop on Samurai Gunn, I'm right there with you. It's one of those games that's been playable in-person here and there -- enough to the point where the name sounds familiar -- which is terrific for folks who frequent independent meetups but that's about it. This IGF-nominated PC game about slicing and/or shooting your friends wants to bring back local multiplayer and, thankfully, it's getting some publisher support for a Steam release this holiday season and PlayStation Vita and PS4 versions next year. Samurai Gunn has been picked up by Maxistentialism, of all companies. Yep, another promising indie has been locked in for Sony systems -- maybe we should start listing out the ones that aren't. Might save time.

Telltale's Walking Dead shambles to OUYA Posted: 27 Aug 2013 10:30 AM PDT One of the most well-regarded series of recent times (and Destructoid's 2012 Game of the Year) The Walking Dead is shacking up with the infamous little Android cube OUYA. When Season One eleases this winter, Episode One will be entirely free, with Episodes Two through Five and the bonus episode 400 Days ready to unlock for those with credit card in hand. Season Two is also planned for OUYA release, with details forthcoming. It isn't known if it will release simultaneously across platforms. OUYA CEO Julie Uhrman is "thrilled to bring the award winning Walking Dead" to the console, and Steve Allison of Telltale commented on the announcement by describing the developer as "a platform agnostic company" that "love[s] adding new platforms." All in all, it's great news for OUYA to get such a high profile title, though I have a sneaking suspicion that the population will by and large trash it in the comments regardless. Don't let me down, ye huddled unwashed masses.

DICE has to compromise for Battlefield 4 on PS4/Xbox One Posted: 27 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT Battlefield 4 executive producer Patrick Bach has gone on the record with VideoGamer to state that the differences in visual fidelity between the PlayStation 4 / Xbox One and PC versions of the game "won't be night and day," but, unsurprisingly, DICE does "need to compromise in some places." Cue a bunch of "duh!" comments. "It's the same core, it's the same game, it's the same feature set, there's nothing left out, so to speak," Bach said of Battlefield 4 on consoles. "But there's also the 64 players, 60 [frames per second] experience that you haven't really seen on a console previously which will move it up a big notch and eliminate some of the gap between PC and console." The new systems from Sony and Microsoft "will take console gaming into a new generation," according to the producer. "Then the question is, could they have done more? Yes. Would it cost the same? No. It would be twice the price. Would that be a reasonable thing to sell to consumers? Probably not." There's also the fact that, just because the game can look better on PC doesn't mean most players will be able to benefit -- not right away, anyway. At any rate, DICE and Battlefield will continue to be thought of as a PC-centric studio and franchise, respectively. So it goes. Battlefield 4 on PS4 & Xbox One – 'We need to compromise in some places,' says DICE [VideoGamer]

Killer is Disappointed: Gigolo missions & token weirdism Posted: 27 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT I really like Killer is Dead. I want to like it more, but I’m increasingly unsure if I should. Unfortunately, the awful Gigolo missions are a big part of planting the seed of distrust in my mind. Read more... |
The Wind Waker HD releases October 4, 2013 Posted: 27 Aug 2013 08:30 AM PDT The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD is shaping up to be to be a solid addition to the Wii U library. The core game is still there after all these years -- it's great, as if you needed to be told that -- and the upgrades aren't purely visual. As with the other big first-party releases, this one will have to wait just a tad longer -- Nintendo has confirmed an October 4, 2013 launch for the game. The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses concert tour will be in Seattle on September 12, and Nintendo is bringing along demo kiosks for Wind Waker HD as well as A Link Between Worlds. There's also that Wind Waker HD Wii U bundle to consider, if this will be the game that pushes you into buying the system. Nothing wrong with that!

Gun Monkeys sends out Steam keys to lonely players Posted: 27 Aug 2013 08:00 AM PDT The fear of a dying community is my biggest reason for not typically becoming invested in games like Gun Monkeys despite how good they might otherwise be. Developer Size Five Games has stumbled across a novel solution, one that I sincerely hope gets the ball rolling. Right now, if you play Gun Monkeys and find yourself alone on a server for a few minutes, a complimentary Steam key will be generated. Smart. So smart. There's a limit on how many codes you can receive and this offer isn't permanent, but it's an interesting experiment nonetheless. "Despite universally positive reviews, Gun Monkeys just hasn't sold enough to keep servers perpetually-buzzing with players," writes Dan Marshall. "It's infuriating, but the important thing to do now is to make sure the people who have bought the game can enjoy it as intended." Deep Silver assures it won't compromise Metro's DNA Posted: 27 Aug 2013 07:30 AM PDT We heard yesterday that Deep Silver, according to CEO Dr. Klemens Kundratitz, intends to "absolutely continue with [the Metro series] and we will also, in the next phase, look to making it more accessible for a broader gamer audience." The publisher has issued a follow-up response, suggesting that the meaning of the original quote was misinterpreted. "We understand the concern, and we would like to reassure the Metro fanbase that Deep Silver has absolutely no intention of compromising Metro's unique DNA," writes global brand manager Huw Beynon. "We completely understand that it is the passion and evangelism of our fans that allowed Metro to grow from a cult hit to genuine, bonafide hit. "Whatever direction a new Metro game takes (and we are still assembling the drawing boards), it will build on the bleak, post apocalyptic pillars of atmosphere, immersion, challenge and depth that sets this franchise apart from the crowd." The broader audience bit? That'll apparently be accomplished "through a commitment to ever higher product quality; through greater strategic investment in the brand; and, in the immediate term, through the release of dedicated Mac and Linux versions of Metro: Last Light. This is just the first stage of a broader initiative to bring Metro to a wider audience, without compromising the product's strengths." I think Deep Silver understands the importance of not chasing after some mythical audience at the risk of losing the fans who made Metro a success in the first place. It's a very real concern with some other publishers, though -- we'll see if my faith is justified when the next game goes public. Statement regarding the Metro franchise [Metro]

Preview: Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft Posted: 27 Aug 2013 07:00 AM PDT Blizzard has finally done it. Rather than experiment in all of its successful franchises with elements of free-to-play or full-on microtransactions, the company has gone ahead and made a completely free-to-play game from start to finish. The catch? It's a card game with Warcraft-themed characters in it. I could hear the collective groan across the internet as soon as it was announced, but as an avid gamer and tabletop fan, I knew I just had to give it a fair shake. And you know what? Even though the final game may prey on those who would spring to fill their decks with numerous microtransactions, the beta is actually really fun. Read more... |
Bethesda wants to waive XBL cost for Elder Scrolls Online Posted: 27 Aug 2013 06:30 AM PDT The Elder Scrolls Online is among a handful of noteworthy MMOs to stick with the subscription model. That's not necessarily a bad thing -- it means we're (in theory) getting a full game instead of the illusion of one -- but it's not going to come cheap, especially for console players. Bethesda VP of PR and marketing Pete Hines tells OXM there's been discussion with Microsoft about waiving the Xbox Live Gold membership fee for the game. As you can imagine, the company hasn't been swift to erode the "value" of its online service by letting one title off the hook here, another there. "The answer right now is that's the way it works," says Hines, "but it's something that we're aware of and we keep pushing on, to see if there's something that can be done. We'll let you know if there's movement there." This is one of those things that sound nice but likely won't go anywhere. Unless Wargaming and Bethesda team up to put the heat on. Microsoft has been reversing a lot lately. Bethesda is "pushing" to let you play Elder Scrolls Online on Xbox One without Xbox Gold [OXM]

This Killer is Dead cosplay sure is mondo Posted: 27 Aug 2013 06:00 AM PDT If there was ever an upcoming week for epic cosplay it would be this week. PAX Prime in Seattle and, from what I'm told, the mecca of all cosplay destinations Dragoncon in Atlanta are sure to provide some amazing displays for weeks to come. With that said, I'll be ditching the Dtoid family this week (going to miss one wild party for sure) as I brave a trip to Atlanta to witness (and capture with my new camera) some hopefully insanely brilliant cosplay. Enjoy this week's gallery. There are some fantastic cosplays old and new, a little Killer is Dead action, and even one our own Jim Sterling could get behind. Remember, if you have any spectacular cosplays you'd like to show off here make sure to send them in to tips@destructoid.com. Until next time! Read more... |
Truncation of exploration - The Daily Spelunk Posted: 27 Aug 2013 05:30 AM PDT We have a new Daily Spelunk for your viewing enjoyment today. It's a bit weird, as we had some technical difficulties which resulted in Jordan's entire run being summarized, but we didn't want you to miss what came later, as I finally get into the depths of the temple.

These so-called Day One Editions will be available while supplies last or, if you're going for the digital versions on Xbox Live, during the first two weeks following launch. Here's the breakdown.
That packaging is neat, if nothing else. For those of you set on getting an Xbox One this year, are you planning to buy any of these titles? If not, then what? Exclusive Day One Content Announced for Forza Motorsport 5, Ryse: Son of Rome and Dead Rising 3 [Xbox Wire]

Tower of Heaven creator releases new game Pause Ahead Posted: 27 Aug 2013 04:30 AM PDT Do you remember Tower of Heaven? If the answer is yes, skip ahead to the next paragraph. If the answer is "no" because you never played it back in 2009, then you can (and should) rectify that immediately. It's not very long; you can play it now and then come back here when you're finished. I'll wait. You're back? Great. Tadakuni Amano, the developer behind Tower of Heaven, has released a new platformer called Pause Ahead. It's similar to the previous work in that it's a platformer from the Super Meat Boy school of tough-but-fair, and the two Amano titles share similar fourth-wall-breaking themes as well. The main hook of Pause Ahead is that you can pause the game at any time, and while the buzzsaws and Thwomp-esque traps will stop moving, the protagonist will continue in a straight path with the momentum he had just prior to the pause, passing through any death-dealing elements unharmed. The catch is the protagonist cannot be directly controlled while the game is paused, and once it is unpaused he becomes just as susceptible to explosive death as before. With only about twenty bite-sized levels to play through, the fastest times posted are in the two minute range. It took me a little over a half hour to get through entirely, and some levels are especially frustrating, but overall it is a neat experience. You can play it right now on Adult Swim.

NEXON to publish Splash Damage's new FPS, Extraction Posted: 27 Aug 2013 04:00 AM PDT NEXON has announced its latest game, Extraction. Developed by Splash Damage (Brink), this online first-person shooter will be coming to North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. So far we know that Extraction is a fast-paced FPS with an emphasis on team-oriented tactical gameplay. It takes place in London following a radiological attack. Mercenaries have come together to piece together the clues that could explain the attack. This is a free-to-play PC title, of course. Extraction will make its debut at PAX this week. I will be checking it out myself, so stay tuned. For now, check out the Extraction teaser page. Read more... |
Posted: 27 Aug 2013 03:30 AM PDT No, really. She probably does. Mine does. In fact, new research released today by the Entertainment Software Association says that 74 percent of moms are gamers. The "Mom Gamers Study: A New Generation of Gamer" found that 75 percent of these gaming moms do so on a weekly basis, and more than a third of them do so daily. They use all platforms, but 65 percent are using mobile devices to do so. But it's not all mobile -- 50 percent use consoles. 30 percent bought some kind of gaming hardware, software, or accessory in the past three months. This means that your mom is all up in gaming. While our moms aren't necessarily playing the same type of games we are (card and puzzle games top the list), I think it helps the climate overall that they're involved. The ESA says that half of mom gamers think that gaming is an activity that is good for the whole family, and about 30 percent of them use games to connect with their children.

Posted: 27 Aug 2013 03:00 AM PDT Rayman Origins was an undeniable treasure when it was released in 2011. A masterclass in platform game design, wrapped in a beautiful artistic style and incredible soundtrack, Origins was proof that the mascot platformer can not only still work, but can boast all the showmanship of a big-budget, Hollywood-flavored, graphically intensive shooter. That, and it was simply adorable. Rayman Legends, originally a Wii U exclusive, has suffered a slight dent in its reputation thanks to Ubisoft's decision to delay the game in the name of a multiplatform release. Even so, the pedigree of its predecessor and a brilliant demo has been enough to assure all but the most insecure that Legends is serious business. And rest assured, my friends, for Legends is absolutely that. Read more... |

Posted: 27 Aug 2013 01:00 AM PDT What do an assassin with multiple personality disorder, an otaku warrior, a foul-mouthed demon hunter, and a chainsaw-wielding cheerleader have in common? Why they're all creations from the legendary Suda 51 of course! For quite some time, Suda has been gracing us with some of the most interesting characters and worlds in all of gaming, despite the technical shortcomings of each title. The newest assassin to join the pantheon of insanity is Mondo Zappa, but his contributions aren't quite up to par with his predecessors. Read more... |

Score this sweet Fantasia: Music Evolved hat at PAX Posted: 26 Aug 2013 06:00 PM PDT Sure, it's not like Mickey's sorcerers hat from Fantasia, but at least this is more practical to wear in public. The Disney Fantasia: Music Evolved hat can be yours at PAX Prime this week. Just hunt down and pin to the ground one of the team members from Harmonix somewhere in the North Hall and they'll give it to you, plus some other swag like pins. Harmonix will also be hosting a behind-the-scenes look at their upcoming game at the "Reimagining Fantasia" panel on September 1 at 11AM in the Pegasus Theatre.

The Daily Hotness: Full Metal Microsoft Sam Posted: 26 Aug 2013 04:59 PM PDT Well if this doesn't finally win an Oscar for Microsoft Sam I'm just not sure what will. On this scorching Monday in August, we're having a karaoke night this Sunday at PAX, we checked out XCOM: Enemy Within, Sony is going mad with power and dropping prices on all the indie games on PSN they could, and so much more happened on 8/26/2013. Erin and her little ghost: Gravity Ghost up for pre-order Posted: 26 Aug 2013 04:30 PM PDT Gravity Ghost is that new 2D platformer that will have people saying "Oh come on, another indie 2D platformer? Gimmie a break!" before they play it and "... actually, this is pretty darn great." after they play it. I have a hard time imagining anyone disliking it. It's so light, nearly completely free of demands, offering multiple types of rewards simultaneously to encourage progression without ever punishing the player too heavily. It's like the feeling of Animal Crossing with the thinking of Super Mario Galaxy, all with style that's smart, charming, and personal. Developer Erin Robinson has been hard at work on this one for a while, and it shows. We'll be checking out the latest build of the game at PAX, but in the meantime, you can pre-order the game right now. Pre-order customers get the game for 33% off the launch day price plus an additional digital copy to give away. The developer encourages you "Find that person in your life -- an old friend, a parent, a smart little kid -- and give them your extra copy when the game comes out." Once you play the game, you'll understand why. You can also pre-order the Gravity Ghost soundtrack from Ben Prunty (FTL) at a discount, and can score a free song from the soundtrack just for visiting game's new webpage.
