Halo 4 Game of the Year Edition targeting October

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 03:00 PM PDT

Proving that if your game has DLC it too can be eligible for that coveted "game of the year edition," IGN brings word that Halo 4 will find its way back onto store shelves with a new price. A convincing albeit unconfirmed image suggests an October release for the package.

For $49.99, 343 Industries will reportedly include the core game, Spartan Ops Season 1, the War Games Map Pass, and the Champions Bundle, as well as content originally obtained through pre-orders and the limited collector's edition. All ribbing aside, this is a solid pickup for anyone who has waited this long to play Halo 4 and wants that DLC.

Destiny, Titanfall win big at Gamescom Awards 2013

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 02:00 PM PDT

You saw our top ten games of gamescom. For the sake of comparison, let's take a look at the official Gamescom Awards 2013. There is some overlap, of course, but there are also some surprises in here.

Destiny took home best PlayStation console game as well as best action game and best online multiplayer game, while Titanfall nabbed best Microsoft console game and best next-generation console game. Those are to be expected, for the most part -- although it is interesting that a cross-gen title ended up winning that category.

The full list is viewable below but, I have to say, it was curious to see The Elder Scrolls Online take home best role-playing game. Best social/casual/online game? Sure. I can see that. But RPG? What else was in the running for that category?

A Witcher board game is in the works for 2014

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 01:00 PM PDT

It feels like a long-overdue idea but the world of The Witcher will become a board game, set to be released in 2014. Polygon spoke to CD Projeckt's Red Marek Ziemak, who confirmed that an iPad version would be released alongside the physical edition. The Witcher boardgame will be handled by experienced boardgame developer Ignacy Trzewiczek who also oversaw a boardgame adaptation of Stronghold

With its fantasy setting and almost ubiquitous popularity in Poland, I'm surprised it's taken this long for a board game based on The Witcher franchise to be announced. Board games based on videogames aren't new but with a board game of Metro 2033 already released and BioShock Infinite on its way, I think I might have to splash out on one of these soon.

Borderlands 2 Game of the Year Edition on the horizon

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 11:00 AM PDT

Those of you who have remained strong and resisted Borderlands 2 knowing full well that 2K and Gearbox Software would eventually put out a "game of the year" version shouldn't have to wait all that much longer. At least, the thing is real, IGN has learned from a source at GameStop. There's photographic evidence and everything! Can't be too far off, now.

The Borderlands 2 Game of the Year Edition is said to compile all of the DLC including the Psycho Pack, the Mechromancer PackCaptain Scarlet’s And Her Pirate’s BootySir Hammerlock’s Big Game HuntMister Torgue’s Campaign Of CarnageTiny Tina’s Assault On Dragon Keep, and the Ultimate Vault Hunter's Upgrade.

If there are two franchises that you should probably wait on, assuming you have that kind of self-control, they have to be The Elder Scrolls and Borderlands. So much post-release content. Speaking of which, I wonder if this release will come with all of that cosmetic DLC.

Pour one out for Precinct

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 10:30 AM PDT

It wasn't that long ago that I was chatting with Jim Walls and Robert Lindsley about Precinct, the spiritual successor to the classic adventure game series Police Quest. The prospect was an exciting one, and both gents were brimming with great ideas and no small amount of passion. So when I went to check on their funding progress this afternoon, I was dismayed to discover that the crowdfunding campaign had been cancelled, and the game is no longer in development.

"We're fighters and fought our best," read the letter from Robert Lindsley. "Unfortunately, our best wasn't good enough to overcome the challenges with crowdfunding Precinct. Our new approach attracted some terrific supporters and we are grateful. However, we simply don't have the momentum needed to meet the requirements of this project."

It's hard to gauge which crowdfunding campaigns will succeed and which will fail. Precinct had reasonable goals, veteran developers, and a whole ton of nostalgia on its side -- and yet it failed where so many similar projects have reached their funding target within days. This is one I was desperately hoping would see the light of day, and I can only hope that another attempt will be made somewhere down the line.

Impressions: Boss Monster

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT

Boss Monster is a card game you likely haven’t heard of. Successfully Kickstarted back in November of last year after exceeding its requesting funding amount by almost 18 times the original goal, it’s been available for purchase since around February.

The premise of the game is simple -- you’re the Boss Monster in a dungeon of your own design, and you must attract as many heroes to it as possible and kill them for their souls. Collect enough souls before your opponents and you win the game, but if too many make it through your dungeon alive, they’ll kill you instead.

With an 8-bit art style and writing that’s an homage to both classic NES games and a lot of current pop culture, Boss Monster is worth picking up if you’re looking for a light-hearted card game that’s easy to teach and play, even for people who don’t board game often. Those who insist that all their games contain deep strategic experiences or find themselves frustrated by games with a strong luck element may want to steer clear, but I’d recommend Boss Monster as a casual game that should appeal to board gamers of all skill levels.

Level-5's next role-playing game is Wonder Flick

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 09:30 AM PDT

Level-5's got a new role-playing game that has a cutesy art style (yay!) and composer Nobuo Uematsu (double yay!) but it's a free-to-play mobile title. The basic hook of Wonder Flick is that commands are issued by flicking the screen and, other than that, it looks like a fairly traditional project from Level-5, brought down in scope to better fit iOS and Android.

The initial mobile release is happening in November 2013 for Japan -- though that's only the beginning, from the sound of it. According to 4Gamer, Level-5 is looking at PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Wii U, and Xbox One versions of the game for next year. Perhaps Wonder Flick will use a different revenue model on those platforms. 99 times out of 100, I'd rather just pay a flat rate up front.

New releases: Killers everywhere

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 08:15 AM PDT

I'll be spending this week playing catch up, but there's no dearth of new releases. Killer is Dead is tempting me, because bloody hell it looks flashy, but I'll probably leave until I'm not drowning in games. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is notable too, if only because it was originally a shockingly poor MMO and had to be entirely rebuilt. I've not been impressed with the results, and found myself sick of it after a weekend. Others seem to be getting more out of it, however.

Also on the docket this week, we've got Lost Planet 3, which is nice if you're sick of the summer heat; Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons comes to the PC, which pleases me greatly; and some burly American fellows kick a ball around in Madden NFL 25. There's more too, but you'll have to scroll down for that.

Anything floating your boat this week?

Ubisoft bringing six games and new competition to PAX

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 07:30 AM PDT

PAX Prime is just a mere four days away. Where has the time gone? As people flock to the Emerald City by the tens of thousands, companies are revealing their plans for the convention. Today, Ubisoft announced that it's showcasing six games at the show -- The Crew, Assassin's Creed IV, Rayman Legends, Watch Dogs, The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot, and Might & Magic Duel of Champions.

Of the six games, four will be playable. The Crew and Rayman Legends will have hands-on demos on the show floor. The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot and Might & Magic Duel of Champions (which is already out) will be in the LAN area. Assassin's Creed IV will have a hands-off single-player demo, and Watch Dogs will highlight the features of the game's companion app. Unfortunately, Tom Clancy's The Division won't be at the show.

Ubisoft is also launching a new competitive gaming experience at PAX Prime that it has dubbed "Next Level". Next Level is an eSports style competition that spans multiple games, genres and platforms. Ubisoft plans to hold it at industry events such as PAX, E3, and comic-cons, but there will also be online tournaments throughout the year. Those that are interested can register at the Ubisoft booth for their chance to participate and win prizes such as t-shirts, gift cards, or a trip to New York Comic-Con.

Review: Europa Universalis IV

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 07:00 AM PDT

I've just united Italy after over a century of bloody conflicts. From Doge of The Serene Republic of Venice to the first King of Italy -- it's quite the step up. Along the way, I've upset the gargantuan Holy Roman Empire, gone to war with the Papal State, conquered Serbia, and inadvertently helped France take over most of Spain. Now I've got the vast Ottoman Empire knocking at my door, and I'm about to lose everything.

Europa Universalis IV is a stage for all sorts of savage political and war-time drama. Once upon a time the franchise was the providence of grognards, history aficionados, and lovers of strategy board games, but times have changed. Everybody and their mum seems to love Game of Thrones -- which, with its wars, politics, and intrigue is not so far removed from Europa Universalis -- and Paradox has done the unthinkable by making this fourth iteration user-friendly, opening the doors to the grubby masses.

It remains daunting, impossibly huge, and unapologetically complex, but it might very well be one of the most scintillating and rewarding strategy games I've plonked myself down to play from sunrise to sunset. I only say "might" because if I said it definitely was, you'd probably just bugger off and play it instead of sitting patiently for me to confirm this at the very end of the review like the terrible tease that I am.

Double Helix reveals a brand new Killer Instinct fighter

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 06:30 AM PDT

Fresh off of revealing its pricing scheme and initial launch fighter counter, the folks over at Double Helix have revealed a brand new female character for the new Killer Instinct. Although speculation was abound that she may have been popular Killer Instinct fighter B. Orchid in disguise, it seems as if she's a brand new character named Sadira.

Not much is known from the initial reveal trailer, but it seems like she has spider-like qualities of some sort, including web based projectiles. Based on the brief video she's a pretty intriguing addition, and I hope the rest of the game follows suit.

The Xbox One looks so much better in white

If this image from reddit is to believed, full-time employees of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business group are getting some rather nice Xbox One freebies, including a special edition white console that, wow, looks a heck of a lot better than the standard finish.

Best part? That copy etched on the front of the Xbox One reads "I made this." Even if this thing isn't genuine, I have to say, I'd really like to see the color available to consumers. It just pops.

It only took 8 years: Microsoft Points are finally gone

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 05:30 AM PDT

The long and storied history of Microsoft's invented Xbox Live currency MS Points has finally come to a close. Despite standing by the system as recently as last October, an update today has phased out what the community has "affectionately" dubbed Microsoft Banana Dollars/Moon Money, in favor of good old fashioned official local currency. Now, instead of trading your real money for fake money and then buying games with the latter, you can simply purchase content with the former.

Presumably, the change is going into effect now in preparation for the upcoming Xbox One. Though the Xbox 360 is nearing the end of its lifespan, I suppose this is a case of "better late than never." It appears that the update allows users to purchase content for the exact amount necessary, rather than only allowing money to be added to accounts in set increments, which is probably most often cited as the reason people wanted the switch to begin with. Huzzah!

Deep Silver wants broader audience for Metro series

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 05:00 AM PDT

Confirming what seemed like an expected path forward for the Metro series, Deep Silver CEO Dr. Klemens Kundratitz tells Joystiq that "Our ambition is to absolutely continue with that brand and we will also, in the next phase, look to making it more accessible for a broader gamer audience."

Which isn't going to be the most thrilling of news for fans who started off with and preferred Metro 2033 -- or at least aspects of it -- over Last Light. It's an interesting question: Can games like this attract larger audiences while not compromising their fundamental design? It's the same concern Dark Souls fans have had going into the sequel.

Kundratitz was also asked if there could potentially be an issue with Metro's license holder. "It is true with a license you have to be aligned with the license holder," he said. "In this case it's [Metro 2033 author] Dmitry Glukhovsky who holds the license and he's a great guy. He enjoys the game, the success of the game and we have a good relationship. He is a great contributor. Also, going forward, as he has been very positive contributing to the last game -- I think he can play an active role for whatever comes in the future."

Grand Theft Auto V special editions have some fan service

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 04:30 AM PDT

Rockstar has a blog post up discussing the special and collector's editions of Grand Theft Auto V. It's the usual stuff, as far as digital content is concerned -- a couple of weapons, some vehicles, and more cosmetic options for the three protagonists. Then there's stunt plane trials and a 25 percent boost for the characters' special abilities which include slow-mo shooting and driving, and a fit of rage, in the case of Trevor. This extra, however, caught my eye:

"GTA Online introduces a new spin on traditional character creation with the hereditary-based creation system. Select your character’s appearance by choosing your parent’s heritage, then use the gene dominance meter to dial-in which parent your appearance favors more. Additionally, you'll customize your character's daily activities -- everything from family time to illegal work and sports to couch potato hours all have an impact on your character’s appearance and skill set (and you can always rank up your skill stats more via gameplay). As part of the Collector’s Edition package, you'll get Niko Bellic, along with both Claude and Misty from Grand Theft Auto III to use as parent options within the character creation system."

Mighty strange. The special edition of GTA V is $79.99 and the collector's edition is $149.99. Physical bonuses include a blueprint map, a cap, and a security deposit bag. Order here, if you have that kind of money to spend on such things.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD has over 60 remastered tracks

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 04:00 AM PDT

Curious why Final Fantasy X HD and Final Fantasy X-2 HD are taking so long? Square is doing quite a polish job on them, that's why. In addition to doing things like adding a whole new 30-minute scene. This latest video, which we posted last week, showcases the dramatic upgrades the company is making.

While I'm suitably impressed by how much better the game looks in HD, the remastered soundtrack is music to my ears. Over 60 tracks have been remastered for the HD release. That's a healthy majority of the game's original four-disc, 91 track soundtrack. I'm equaly happy to see the changes made to the HUD. The whole thing is much cleaner and more modern. Even the Overdrive prompt has been enhanced.

Here's hoping this much attention is paid when Square delivers an HD version of Final Fantasy XII, right? Maybe I can in fact hope they scrub Vaan and Penelo and let the already stellar game reach its intended heights.

Awesomenauts Kickstarter meets goal in seven days

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 03:30 AM PDT

Awesomenauts is still chugging, and based on the results of its latest Kickstarter for the Starstorm expansion, it's going to keep chugging for quite some time. In just seven days, Ronimo has reached its goal of $125,000, which nets players three new characters, twin-stick support, new music, and a spectator mode.

Work on the currently funded content will begin right away Ronimo says, as it preps to meet the next goal of $200,000, which includes a new map and additional music. The stretch goals keep going and going, so it'll be interesting to see where they end up! Either way, I'm already ready for Starstorm.

Tanks a lot: World of Tanks Xbox 360 hands-on

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 03:15 AM PDT

I tried my best to flank the enemy and shoot out his treads while trying out World of Tanks for Xbox 360 at gamescom. That helps. Lesson learned. That was after a previous unsuccessful roll-out where I died so quickly that I kind of hoped no one was watching.

Everyone was watching.

I got some quick hands-on time with both the Xbox 360 and iPad versions of World of Tanks in a gamescom meeting with Wargaming. The insanely popular tank MMO is now making its way to other platforms, with the Xbox 360 currently in beta in North America. The European side of this beta launches this week, too. Asia will follow, as will CIS. Wargaming says that getting the servers set up for all of this has not been easy.

BioShock's Burial at Sea focuses on small scale, stealth

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 03:00 AM PDT

The intriguing BioShock Infinite DLC Burial at Sea features a return to BioShock 1's Rapture, prior to its downfall. Also, it's film noir as heck. Chinatown with splicers. I'm all about this; I'm always ringing the "more noir" knell. In the two part DLC you will play as Infinite's protagonist Booker DeWitt as well as Elizabeth. Ken Levine spoke a bit more about the return to Rapture on the PlayStation Blog.

"There are smaller scale combats that give the player much greater opportunity to observe the space ahead of time and set up the combat situation to his or her taste," Levine said when asked whether the DLC would play like Infinite or be rebalanced. "Therefore traps become much more meaningful than they were in Infinite. So stealth becomes a larger component." Works for me. Glad Booker is going to play differently as well. The idea of the game playing, "a little more deadly but a little less frenetic," sounds excellent.

Levine also noted that, "the experiences of Burial At Sea: Episode One has a substantial effect on" Elizabeth and that the team is "spending a lot of time working on how she feels and how she plays." Still curious how Booker's manly jawline lets him absorb bullets better than Elizabeth, whose Disney-waist should make her harder to hit than the square jawed target, but I'm infinitely interested in a style of play that's less blasty-blasty and let's me settle into this delectable atmosphere.

XCOM: Enemy Within is MEC-ing me crazy

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 02:30 AM PDT

Being at gamescom has its perks, especially when it comes to having the first opportunity to play a newly announced game. Or in this case, a new expansion so big that it's essentially a new game.

2K officially announced expansion XCOM: Enemy Within last week. Slated for release on November 12, this expansion brings all kinds of fun new bits to XCOM: Enemy Unknown, including body modification, big ol' MECs, enemy counterparts called Mectoids, new resources, new maps, and much more.

As I'm sure you'll understand, I made it a priority to get my strategy loving self in front of a demo machine at the show.

Things are out of the order-nary in PS4's The Order: 1886

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 02:00 AM PDT

I'm as interested in The Order: 1886 as I can be for a game I know so little about. I've still not seen the PS4 exclusive from the consistently good Ready at Dawn in action, but this recent PlayStation Blog post from Ready at Dawn CEO and Creative Director Ru Weerasuriya talks more about how the team is building up the Victorian world with its own twist.

Of course, the twist talked about here -- introducing electricity much earlier than it was readily available -- smacks a bit of the recent Dishonored, but I'm willing to let that go. I loved the mix in Dishonored's Dunwall and I'm sure I'll love it here in revisionist London. Advanced weaponry, electricity, patrolling airship sentries. I'm down. I just want to see more.

I guess I'll continue waiting on details in an orderly fashion.

Between Me and the Night is like a weird dream

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 01:30 AM PDT

Prototype footage of upcoming indie game Between Me and the Night came of as merely interesting at first, but the more I watched, the more uneasy I became. It's hard to put my finger on what makes it seem so weird, but I will say that it feels similar to how you might feel when waking up from a strange dream.

Joao Ortega, art director on Between Me and the Night, says that this game tells the story of a kid trapped in a floating house where logic doesn't work as usual. Daylight is for solving puzzles to learn clues about real life, while night has him pulled into a scary closet where he's up against his greatest fears.

You'll see some of the feeling of Ortega and his partner working for a sleepless week on this prototype. The game's ambience reflects exhaustion and nicotine overdose, for example.

Between Me and the Night started as a student project for Joao Ortega and Karlos Garcia. They want to get this dream off the ground, so they're looking into crowdfunding right now. In the meantime, check out this prototype footage and see if it's something you can get behind.

Me? I like it. It's got that messed up vibe I dig.

New Super Smash Bros gets a Metroid stage

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 01:00 AM PDT

Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai revealed another of the upcoming Wii U/3DS game's stages on the Miiverse, not to be confused with the Dafoeverse. This time, it's the Pyrosphere from Metroid: Other M. The past game's Metroid stages will be sa-missed. I should expect a metric ton of complaints from you guys, right?

I was under the impression Other M was something everyone just wanted to forget about and now its stupidly named Pyrosphere is being immortalized in Super Smash Bros. Or has the hate cooled off? Perhaps it got out of the pyrosphere?

Still, this is no more out of left field than a Pilotwings stage. Doesn't do much for me, but I'm hoping the new Super Smash Bros.' Other stages start to get me as excited as its awesome new fighters. Wii Fit Trainer for life. Any game you'd like to see get a stage?

Saints Row IV's tentacle bat got built in real life

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Sure, the Saints Row: The Third dildo bat was cool. However, today is the day of the tentacle. Saints Row IV, in its self-one-upmanship, needed to raise the ante and thus the tentacle bat was born. What's more, a team of special effects wizards went and built the thing in real life.

It kind of reminds me of when Mike Rowe built a fiberglass shark on Discovery's Dirty Jobs. It's actually pretty neat to see how this got made, and the final product undoubtedly trounces the promotional dildo bat that made its way to various outlets. It even has lights. It's tenta-cool. Though had they kept it purple, the hints of Ultros would be overwhelming.

Are you team tentacle bat or team dildo bat? Or is there a better weapon to use in Saints Row IV while you scream the lyrics to Biz Markie's "Just a Friend" at the top of your lungs?

Alien bugs want you dead in PS4/Vita RTS Final Horizon

Posted: 25 Aug 2013 11:00 PM PDT

One of the many indie developers currently working with Sony is Eiconic Games. They're calling their RTS Final Horizon, which apparently takes cues from Space Invaders and Aliens, "the evolution of tower defense." More tower defense, huh? Honestly, I'm more bugged by the fact that it's called Final Horizon, which is a terribly bland and vague name that does nothing to inform me I'll be squashing alien bugs, or "Insectors."

Wait. "Insectors?" Okay. Clearly too much time has been spent articulating and animating each little alien bug limb that someone forgot to learn how to name things. Beetleborgs was less stupid of a name.

Personally, I'm about ready to side with the alien bugs on this one. Doubtless it was the stupid colonists who gave them such a silly, reductive name. Plus, who am I to attack the creatures for protecting their land or planet or pride? I'm not siding with colonists. Unless it's a colony of alien ants who fierce mandibles ready to tear through the flesh of invading human scum. You know?

PS4 and PS Vita feature cross platform party chat

Posted: 25 Aug 2013 10:00 PM PDT

Sony's Shuhei Yoshida is great for a lot of reasons. He executive produced Legend of Dragoon (and a heck of a lot more familiar titles in his impressive tenure at Sony). He falls asleep at Sony panels and then jokes about it on Twitter. He also often plainly answers users' questions on Twitter with "yes" and "no."

With this "yes" on Twitter, Yoshida confirmed that the PS4's party chat is inviting Vita users along as well. Cross platform party chat. Chat's a neat feature. Nothing to be cross about here. Unless you're still upset that the PS3 never delivered cross game chat. In which case, wow, way to hold a grudge. Remind me not to get on your bad side.

The Weekend Hotness: Pimp daddy Inafune

The man, the myth, the legend, Keiji Inafune will be attending PAX. Hopefully when I meet him again, I won't do what I did at E3: back immediately out of the room, grab Max Scoville by the arm, and exclaim, "MOTHER F*CKIN' KEIJI INAFUNE IS IN THERE!"

This weekend, I put Hyperkin's Pixel Art Controller through the wringer, Sup Holmes? gets vertical with Jake Kaufman, Cblogger Handy welcomes you to the world of knock-off gaming, Chris Carter goes beyond with his Disney Infinity review then cracks open his boxed copy of New Super Luigi U, and Destructoid will be throwing a PAX party worthy of Caesar.
