Scare yourself stupid with Outlast at PAX Posted: 25 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT There's nothing I like more than to curl up into a little ball and weep like a wee lassie, and Outlast looks like it's going to give me plenty of opportunities to do so. The pants-wetting survival horror title is due out on September 4, but you can preorder it now and get a 20 percent discount off the $19.99 retail price. For those of you going to PAX, you'll have a chance to check out the hands-on demo before launch. Outlast dev Red Barrels' David Chateauneuf is also going to be on the PAX panel "Are you Afraid? A Guide to Survival Horror," which sounds like a hoot. I won't be crossing the ocean and a continent to go to PAX, lamentably, but I'll be getting my sweaty mitts on Outlast in the next couple of days, so I'm sure I'll be able to keep myself terrified and entertained. Pokemon: The Eevee EP pleases Charles Darwin Posted: 25 Aug 2013 08:00 AM PDT Did you know that Charles Darwin's theory of evolution was first published on August 20, 1858? OverClocked ReMix knew, which is why the music arrangement clan celebrated the monumental scientific event by releasing Pokémon: The Eevee EP exactly 155 years later. After the obscenely massive five-disc Balance and Ruin, it's refreshing that OCR scaled back for this sensible nine-track album. The Eevee EP is a tribute to that evolutionary enigma, Eevee, which each song representing the base critter and its eight evolutions, including Sylveon from Pokémon X / Y. Eevee doesn't have any specific theme music, so these arrangements instead source various in-game tunes that thematically represent Eevee's forms. Download the free release from the album page below, or hit up the torrent here. Pokémon: The Eevee EP [OverClocked ReMix]

Sup Holmes eats the bacon with Jake 'Virt' Kaufman Posted: 25 Aug 2013 07:40 AM PDT WayForgust continues with composer extraordinaire Jake "Virt" Kaufman. Jake's most recently released project is Ducktales: Remastered, but you may be more familiar with his past work on Q*bert (2000). Contra 4, Retro City Rampage, Adventure Time: HIKWYSOG, Shovel Knight, David Beckham Soccer, DickHand, or one of the many other games he's helped bring to life over the past +10 years. Jake's also well known in the live game music scene. If you're going to PAX next week, you may have the opportunity to see him him in concert. I highly recommend it. We'll be talking to Jake about what it's like to be the John Williams to WayForwar'ds Steven Spielberg, the music that's meant the most to him in his life, the way sound and music works differently in games than in other media, the recent rise as game composers as underground rock starts, and a lot more. Join us at 1pm PST/4pm EST for the full sound explosion. Read more... |
Pre-order AVGN Adventures, win a chance to be an NPC Posted: 25 Aug 2013 07:00 AM PDT Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures is up for pre-order on Steam, so if you're jonesin' for some turd blastin' on the PC rather than on the Wii U or 3DS, that's a thing you should do. In fact, do it before 1:00 PM EST on September 5 if you want to win a chance to actually be in the game! One person will be selected to be an NPC in the upcoming game. Who knows? You might even get to rub shoulders with a very "sprite-ly" Jim Sterling! The contest is only open to US residents excluding territories, so sucks if you live anywhere else. And if you happen to be attending PAX, swing on by the Symbiote Studios booth (Booth 6118) to play a demo of AVGN Adventures.

Behold the glory of the physical version of Super Luigi U Posted: 25 Aug 2013 06:00 AM PDT As you have have heard, Nintendo debuted one of their first major DLC campaigns on the Wii U in June in the form of New Super Luigi U, but that version was digital-only, and it required a copy of New Super Mario Bros. U. Well, today in North America (or July in all other regions) a physical edition has launched in all its green glory -- and it doesn't require the original game to run. Coming in at $29.99, the physical version is contained in rather fitting green case with the "Year of Luigi" emblem, complete with its own unique disc art modeled after New Super Mario Bros. U. Just like the digital copy it comes with its own campaign playable by Luigi, Blue Toad, Yellow Toad, and the invincible Nabbit. From what I can tell it hasn't added any extras -- so all you're getting is the remixed story mode and levels. As an side, I was able to register the physical edition of the game at Club Nintendo in addition to the digital version, which I already had on my account -- the physical copy nets you 40 Coins. The game itself is an excellent collector's item for any Mario fan, and it'll go very nicely with my work in progress Mario collection. Read more... |
Posted: 25 Aug 2013 04:45 AM PDT [Ed. note: Bumping our review of the digital version from June, as the game is available in stores today in the form of a physical standalone copy.] The "other" brother rarely gets the respect he deserves. While Mario is off chasing the spotlight, Luigi is often content hanging back, kicking the dirt while his big brother saves the day. But this is 2013 -- the Year of Luigi -- and everything changes. This time around, Nintendo has opted to morph the original New Super Mario Bros. U into New Super Luigi U by way of DLC that's available now, and a standalone disc coming at a later date. Luigi U features all new levels, a playable Nabbit, and an increased challenge. While Nintendo could have put a little more effort into the presentation, I have to say, the core quality of New Super Mario Bros. U has been perfectly preserved here, and Luigi really gets a chance to shine with his new add-on. Read more... |
Instant goosebumps: The Music of rain Posted: 25 Aug 2013 02:30 AM PDT Upcoming PS3 title rain is beautiful in many ways, but the subtle, emotional soundtrack I heard in a recent preview gave me goosebumps. A new developer diary shows how much work went into the game's music. Composer Yugo Kanno talks about how he worked to keep it musically serene, avoiding any dynamic changes. It's an interesting approach that really works for what they game is trying to do emotionally. He also talks about how his work began from seeing watercolor concept art -- seeing the inspiration is always neat. And then, a treat. You'll see the recording orchestra working to gameplay footage. Lovely stuff. Now, if you want to get some of the goosebumps I mentioned earlier, stick around for the video's showing some of the work British vocalist Connie Talbot put in. It's original work that is seamlessly mixed with a classic. Jump to 4:45 if you're impatient, but do not miss this. As a musician, there's no way I could miss rain. If you feel the same, Sony has just announced that rain will hit PSN on October 1, priced at $14.99. You can pre-order now (up until Sept. 30) and get a bonus theme, some avatars, a musical montage, and more. These bonuses are available immediately after pre-ordering. Read more... |
Have your Zelda art displayed at Legend of Zelda concert Posted: 25 Aug 2013 02:00 AM PDT Nintendo has a cool contest on their Facebook page that will have the work of the best artists displayed at the currently touring The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddess concert. Submit Zelda fan art to the contest and have a chance at your art being displayed at the show, set to music from the Zelda series. The top five selections will win a Wii U console and a copy of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD. These and 50 more top finalists will have their art displayed on the concert's main screen. And, at the September 12 Seattle performance, the five winners will have their pieces displayed in the venue's lobby. I wish I was an artist. I'm imagining a piece where Link and Zelda have a nice suburban home with a 4-door sedan and 2 corgis. Read more... |
