Divekick ad explains Poker, Street Fighter and more Posted: 20 Aug 2013 04:00 PM PDT I was working on getting the review for Divekick! posted tonight, but this video by Action Button Entertainment's Tim Rogers just stole my thunder. The first 45 seconds do everything I was trying to do in the opening paragraphs of the review except in a much more expressive and entertaining way. It's like I've been hit by a multi-kill series of headshot K.O.s. I got fraud stamped. So the full review will have to wait a little longer, but here is a small sample to tide you over. "Divekick! is about what happens in a fighting game when you and/or your opponent are hurtling through the air, with no option to turn back or second guess, in total love and commitment to the idea of kicking another person in the face. After you get past the charming character designs and other surface level trappings, Divekick! boils down to just two emotional experiences-- flying kick feelings, and thinking about flying kicks feelings. You'd think it would get old, but it doesn't." Divekick! is out now on Steam, PS3, and PS Vita. Read more... |
You can now pre-order Grand Theft Auto V through PSN Posted: 20 Aug 2013 03:00 PM PDT Grand Theft Auto V is now available for pre-order through the PlayStation Network. This is the Day 1 version of the game, which means you'll get access to the bonus Atomic Blimp in-game vehicle that's on offer with the physical standard copy of the game with pre-orders too. Plus, if you pre-order on PSN you'll be given a 75% discount on any Rockstar game available on the PlayStation Network. In related news, GTA V's online mode is set to feature over 700 missions. That's nuts!

Sony Cuts Prices, Good Guy Origin & Microsoft Gets Indie Posted: 20 Aug 2013 02:30 PM PDT Hey everybody! Here's today's Destructoid Show, which is just full of crazy news. If you can't keep track of everything coming outta Gamescom, here's all the big stuff from Microsoft, here's all the big stuff from Sony, and beyond that, it's mostly EA news, inlcluding the Dragon Age Inquisition launch window, some new Battlefield 4 stuff, and Origin's surprising new policy.

These are the 32 countries the PS4 will be launching in Posted: 20 Aug 2013 02:00 PM PDT Today Sony announced at their gamescom conference that the PlayStation 4 will be launching in 32 different countries by the end of the year. Those countries are: United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, and Peru. The PlayStation 4 will be out in North America on November 15 for $399, and in Europe on November 29 for €399, and £349 in the United Kingdom. No exact timing or pricing was given for the other countries, but it's only a matter of time before all that is announced. Also worth noting that Sony didn't mention a release date for Japan. I suspect they're saving any announcements for their home country at the Tokyo Game Show. In fact, their TGS press conference is slated to be held next month, on September 9.

'Up yours, dude' Tyson wins at Punch-Out for the 1st time Posted: 20 Aug 2013 01:00 PM PDT American boxer and general guy-to-be-scared-of Mike Tyson was too busy punching people in the face to play videogames when NES classic Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! released. Fox Sports had him take on Glass Joe, apparently for the first time. Though last month Mike Tyson said he couldn't beat Glass Joe, which implies he had played before. He makes weird, cute noises for a man that could easily kill you.

Peggle 2 looks like everything I want it to be Posted: 20 Aug 2013 11:30 AM PDT There are few things more satisfying in all of gaming than lining up that perfect Peggle shot -- the one that gracefully slides across every last peg you intended to hit. Gosh, I need Peggle 2 in my life more than I realized. The original announcement video was fun (and funny!), but this trailer is the real deal, gameplay footage and all. While the recent Plants vs. Zombies 2 went to iOS first, we know that Peggle 2 is being set up as a timed exclusive for Xbox One. This would be so much easier if I were a patient person.

Ride papercraft pigs in this cute Tearaway trailer Posted: 20 Aug 2013 11:00 AM PDT Along with Puppeteer, Tearaway has to be the most delightful-looking game of the year. I'm torn as to which looks cuter. It might even be a legitimate contender for many game of the year awards. Hamza couldn't sing its praises enough when he previewed it before E3 -- it was his favorite game to play in a Sony showing that included The Last of Us, among other great titles. It feels a little like Wind Waker by way of Media Molecule. It even manages to use the Vita's alternative controls -- touch, tilt -- in a big way without feeling gimmicky or unnecessary. It's a bundle of originality, from its papercraft aesthetic down to the neat gameplay elements. Plus, you can ride pigs! Good lucking tearing me away from Tearaway when it comes to Vita this November. Read more... |
Live show: Shadow Warrior early gameplay Posted: 20 Aug 2013 10:30 AM PDT [Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.] We have a special treat in store for you tonight on Mash Tactics, as we'll be checking out the amazing Shadow Warrior remake almost a month before it is scheduled to be released. I've only had a chance to dive into about the first twenty minutes or so of the game, but everything I was able to experience left my jaw on the floor and had me eagerly wanting more. From settings and characters that are oozing with style and personality, to melee combat that could be best described as Fruit Ninja with people, this has definitely become one of my most anticipated titles of the year. Come check it out for yourself tonight on Dtoid.TV! QotD: What was the first video game you ever played?

Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus sure is colorful Posted: 20 Aug 2013 10:30 AM PDT It may not be coming to PlayStation 4, but you'd be forgiven for thinking otherwise after looking over some of these new Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus screenshots. Funny how much of an impact a strong art direction can have. Rather, the new game will be PS3-only when it releases digitally and in stores for $29.99 this year. Insomniac Games is picking up where the Future series left off -- this is a direct epilogue to Tools of Destruction and A Crack in Time. Thank goodness for that! Read more... |
NA League of Legends account info compromised Posted: 20 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT Riot Games has issued a security update that applies to North American players of League of Legends. Account information -- including usernames, transaction records from 2011, and hashed and salted passwords and credit card numbers -- has been compromised. Here's the official line from the company: "What we know: usernames, email addresses, salted password hashes, and some first and last names were accessed. This means that the password files are unreadable, but players with easily guessable passwords are vulnerable to account theft. "Additionally, we are investigating that approximately 120,000 transaction records from 2011 that contained hashed and salted credit card numbers have been accessed. The payment system involved with these records hasn't been used since July of 2011, and this type of payment card information hasn't been collected in any Riot systems since then. We are taking appropriate action to notify and safeguard affected players. We will be contacting these players via the email addresses currently associated with their accounts to alert them. Our investigation is ongoing and we will take all necessary steps to protect players." Going forward, Riot will require new registrations and account changes to be associated with a valid email address; once introduced, this email requirement will also apply to existing League of Legends players. Two-factor authentication is also planned, meaning changes to your account email or password will need to be verified through email or SMS. Browncoats: New Arkham Origins trailer shows off Firefly Posted: 20 Aug 2013 09:30 AM PDT I've been unintentionally avoiding Batman: Arkham Origins. Perhaps subconsciously its prequel, not-Rocksteady-developed nature has kept me from getting fully excited. After properly sitting down with this new trailer, however, I'm back to being invested. The "Nowhere to Run" trailer offers a first look at villain Firefly, while giving the rest of Batman's rogues gallery ample face time as well. Speaking of face time, you can also see a mask-less Deathstroke. I'm digging this incarnation of Firefly. I don't know the character that well, but he seems like something out of Metal Gear Solid here. Maybe a bit of Arkham's Scarecrow thrown in, minus the drug trip. It's cool to see someone who can menace Batman a bit rather than right mano-a-mano. Plus, the premise is fantastic. Eight assassins are set upon Batman on Christmas Eve? It's like Die Hard in Gotham. It's also novel seeing the Arkham version of the typical Batman origin story -- early brushes with Commissioner Gordon and all that. The scuffs with Alfred were nice, too. Not sure how much love the story can get, especially with all the villains to jam in, but it should be neat. Who's your favorite villain in the cabal?

Fall for Fetch in this inFamous: Second Son trailer Posted: 20 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT inFamous: Second Son may have moved away from mainstay protagonist Cole, but newcomer Delsin looks as if he'll fill the role's shoes quite aptly. Causing wanton destruction is a series staple, and he seems to be perfectly capable, while the Emerald City should serve as an interesting backdrop for the mayhem. As indicated by this trailer, Delsin isn't the lone superhuman in town, as a woman by the alias of "Fetch" also possesses some sort of powers. Unfortunately for her, landing softly isn't one of them. Big Fest on Vita lets you deal with real unsigned bands Posted: 20 Aug 2013 08:30 AM PDT At its gamescom press conference, Sony unveiled a new IP for PlayStation Vita called Big Fest. In the free-to-play simulator, players manage a music festival with the aim to become the world's greatest music promoter. The really unique element of Big Fest is that the bands included for the virtual line up are actual unsigned bands. One can imagine that if the game makes it big, it could be a new viable way for independent artists to promote and distribute their music. Read more... |
Today's Xbox One reveals from gamescom 2013 Posted: 20 Aug 2013 08:29 AM PDT The first major conference of gamescom 2013 was belonged to Microsoft, and while there was some good content revealed, it paled in comparison to all of Sony's announcements. Still, there was some interesting news shared. More importantly, Microsoft detailed their Xbox One indie development publishing program, plus how you'll find indie games on the new Xbox. Check out our coverage to see exactly how it will all work: The hardware: The games:

Enjoy these Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft music samples Posted: 20 Aug 2013 08:00 AM PDT It's been a while since we've talked about the Warcraft card game spin-off, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. Blizzard Entertainment is currently taking beta sign-ups, so I thought it would be a good time to find out what's going on with the game's music given Blizzard's emphasis on producing quality audio in all of their titles, no matter how big or small. We've got a couple exclusive music samples via the Destructoid SoundCloud from composer Peter McConnell, the Grim Fandango guy; original World of Warcraft composer Jason Hayes, who worked on some of the trailer music; and lead designer Eric Dodds. Check it out below and let us know what you think of the music. Read more... |
All the news from today's Sony gamescom conference Posted: 20 Aug 2013 07:57 AM PDT Once again it seems Sony won another conference with their reveals at gamescom 2013 today. Here's everything that happened today at Sony's press conference: The hardware:

Video: PlayStation 4 user interface in action Posted: 20 Aug 2013 07:40 AM PDT For those who missed today's Sony conference live stream, here's a clip from the opening moments -- the unveiling of PlayStation 4's user interface. While it might not look as streamlined as the traditional cross-media bar, it's apparently much faster, and incredibly responsive, and if this is any indication of what to expect down the line, I can't wait to see more.

Project Spark closed beta coming in October Posted: 20 Aug 2013 07:30 AM PDT Project Spark is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious and creative Xbox One titles that Microsoft is currently showing off, but don't take my word for it -- you can try it out yourself. A closed beta was just announced for Project Spark that will take place in October. Those that are interested can sign up at the game's website. Details are scarce right now, as we don't even know what platform the beta will be on. Still, it will be cool to get a sneak peek at a next-generation title a bit before Xbox One launches.

PS4 will release on November 15 in North America Posted: 20 Aug 2013 06:42 AM PDT Sony's gamescom press conference is over now, but they saved a key nugget of information for the very end. Just before closing out, Sony confirmed earlier PlayStation 4 pricing information, added that the console would launch in 32 countries, and finally dropped the release dates: November 15 in North America, and November 29 in Europe. Another impressive bit of news from this section of the conference is that PlayStation 4 pre-orders have topped 1 million worldwide. Mark your calendars, people! The full force of the next generation of game consoles is almost upon us.

Upgrade from PS3 to PS4, save on select games Posted: 20 Aug 2013 06:40 AM PDT When you buy blockbuster games like Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin's Creed IV, or Watch Dogs on PlayStation 3 and decide that you want to own them again but on PS4 -- who are you people? -- you'll be able to save some money. For a limited time, "upgrading" to next-gen by purchasing the digital versions of any of these four games will earn you a "significantly discounted price," according to Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House. It'd have to be pretty darn significant for me to ever consider something like this, but I can see a certain type of gamer getting value out of the offer.

Assassin's Creed IV on PlayStation Vita via remote play Posted: 20 Aug 2013 06:36 AM PDT During today's press conference Sony once again demonstrated the PlayStation Vita's remote play functionality by streaming Ubisoft's highly-anticipated pirate-fest Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag running on PlayStation 4 hardware. The transition appeared absolutely seamless to say the least and easily left me impressed. The third-person action, free-running and cinematic sequences translated well. My only reservation was the sheer number of details taking place during the naval battles, which may not be so easy to follow on such a small screen. While most fans would agree that the remote play feature has been vastly under-utilized since its inception, what little we've seen has left us craving more, and today's demonstration was no exception. Let's just hope this is the start of a growing trend. Read more... |
PS4, PS3 get 60 minutes of exclusive Watch Dogs content Posted: 20 Aug 2013 06:33 AM PDT Ubisoft showed a level of Watch Dogs that is exclusive to PS3 and PS4 during its gamescom press conference. All told, Sony can boast 60 minutes of additional content on PS3 and PS4. There are four exclusive missions (including the one in this trailer), a new costume, and a hacking boost perk. Ubisoft is also partnering with Sony to make "a blockbuster movie" based on Watch Dogs, the interesting Ubisoft game coming this year to every system outside of your smart fridge. According to Polygon, the film "is in development at Ubisoft Motion Pictures, with production being handled by Sony Pictures and New Regency." I hope it's a spiritual successor to Tim Allen's The Shaggy Dog. Or the John Travolta/Robin Williams classic Old Dogs. Watch Dogs movie in the works with Ubisoft, Sony, New Regency [Polygon]

Free 14 day trial of PS Plus for every EU PS4 owner Posted: 20 Aug 2013 06:16 AM PDT PlayStation Plus is a great deal - surely everyone knows that by now. Well, Sony is really pushing the service so that more and more people get to try it out. Announced today at Gamescom, every owner of the PlayStation 4 in Europe will get a two week free trial of the service, with absolutely no restrictions. In addition, Assassin's Creed III will be added to the instant library for PlayStation Plus users later this year on PS3, sweeting the previous deal that much more if you're into parkour and boats and stuff. Really though, for $50, PS Plus is one of the best deals out there for PS3 owners.

Twitch support announced for PlayStation 4 Posted: 20 Aug 2013 06:15 AM PDT Twitch was locked in for Xbox One, and now the streaming service has also been confirmed for PlayStation 4. What's that mean, exactly? After hitting the DualShock 4's Share button, you'll be able to broadcast game footage out to your Twitch channel. And if you're more into watching others stream, that's part of the support as well. Both viewing broadcasts and creating your own will be free for all users. Sony also revealed that some 20 video services are planned for the system, and Music Unlimited will see improvements. The "faster, simpler, better" service will allow you to have music going in the background while playing games.

Binding of Isaac Rebirth now coming to PS4, arrives 2014 Posted: 20 Aug 2013 06:15 AM PDT The Binding of Isaac is one of those awesome games that felt like it came out of nowhere and became a phenomenon. Sure, part of it was likely due to the talent behind it, but the game does plenty to speak for itself. The Binding of Isaac Rebirth has been known about for some time now, but today it's been announced that the game is coming to the PlayStation 4 in addition to the Vita and PC, and will arrive in 2014. The new game will feature 50% new content compared to the vanilla version, including local co-op, more playable characters, and competitive loadouts for players on Twitch or Ustream to perform the same runs against each other. It also features a sweet "semu 16-bit SNES style" of graphics. But for now, just watch that trailer, created by filmmaker James ID and commissioned by the creator of Isaac.

Playroom will be pre-installed on all PlayStation 4s Posted: 20 Aug 2013 06:11 AM PDT Sony's PlayStation Eye support seemed to wane as the PlayStation 3 aged, but armed with the new features in the PlayStation 4's controller, it looks like the camera will be attempting a comeback, hoping to stay more relevant than its predecessor. The first piece of software that will utilize a lot of the new features is Playroom, which looks similar to Double Fine Happy Action Theater. Robots will electrocute your friends (virtually) before you play a sort of motion-based Pong clone. Good news for those interested in some stupid fun but not enough to pay for it: Playroom will be pre-loaded onto all PlayStation 4 consoles.

Killzone: Shadow Fall getting customizable Warzones Posted: 20 Aug 2013 06:09 AM PDT Killzone: Shadow Fall will introduce custom Warzones when it launches on PS4 this year. You'll be able to tweak your own rules, conditions, and match types, before sharing your created game modes online. We got shown a brief trailer for the multiplayer, and you can view that above. Resogun: the PS4 exclusive shmup from Super Stardust dev Posted: 20 Aug 2013 06:05 AM PDT Housemarque made a name for itself with the addictive, colorful Super Stardust HD, one of the PS3's early downloadable and indie exclusives. Housemarque followed with neat games like Dead Nation and the excellent Outland, but it's now going back to its shmup roots with Resogun. The "arcade action shooter" Resogun was announced today at gamescom exclusiveely for PlayStation 4. It eschews Stardust's spherical system for a left and right moving circular one. Accordingly, it's no longer a twin stick shooter, but a horizontal one. You rescue things, get power-ups, and drop bombs, of course. Cool, screen clearing blue energy bombs. So satisfying.. According to the PlayStation Blog, "[t]here will also be a bunch of different ships, co-op multiplayer, plus a ton of things that we can’t really talk about just yet." Resogun looks reso-fun! Wasteland Kings debuting exclusively on Sony Platforms Posted: 20 Aug 2013 06:05 AM PDT During today's conference, it was announced that Wasteland Kings would be making its console debut exclusively on Sony's PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 4, once again adding their growing line-up of indie titles. Unveiled earlier this year, Vlambeer's upcoming 'roguelike-like' features mutant-fueled action, randomly generated worlds and a wide-array of weaponry. As we mentioned last week, its development will be streamed via Vlambeer's official Twitch channel. Once again, PC gamers can keep an eye out for Steam Early Access in the coming weeks.

Shadow of the Beast: Reimagined coming to PS4 Posted: 20 Aug 2013 06:03 AM PDT Shadow of the Beast originally came out for the Amiga, or so Wikipedia tells me. It also tells me it was a side-scrolling game, used parallax scrolling for its background and had awesome music. Evidently it was a big deal, further emphasized by the fact that Sony is revisiting the game with Shadow of the Beast: Reimagined. Very little is known about this reimagining, but if I were a betting man, I'd say that it is also a video game of the sidescrolling variety.

Rime looks like Ico mixed with Wind Waker Posted: 20 Aug 2013 06:03 AM PDT Well, this certaintly came out of nowhere! Developer Tequila Works' newest project has been unveiled, and it's an open world adventure for the PlayStation 4. Titled simply as Rime, it distinctly reminds me of Ico mixed with a bit of Wind Waker for good measure. After the wasted potential that was Deadlight, I'm very cautious of Tequila Works. Even still, I'll be right there at day one trying it out, because damn if it doesn't look amazing. Read more... |
Lords of the Fallen debut: Smash monsters with a hammer Posted: 20 Aug 2013 06:00 AM PDT I forgot Lords of the Fallen was a thing at this recent E3 and announced a month earlier for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Maybe because it didn't get any sort of snazzy trailer, like this crazy, CG debut trailer. A man with a giant hammer clones himself, uses some sort of magic on a giant monster, and yells at the gods. City Interactive doesn't have the most stellar track record, but it seems the developer is swinging for the big leagues with Lords of the Fallen. Tomasz Gop, who was the senior producer on The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, will be heading up development and our E3 preview compared the slice we were shown rather favorably to From Software's Dark Souls. Battles are often with a few enemies and focus on skill rather than button mashing. Not too many of those around so it's nice to see another. From the game's website:
Sounds enough to at least get me interested in the semi-standard-looking action-RPG.

Magicka devs' Helldivers announced for PS3, PS4, Vita Posted: 20 Aug 2013 05:59 AM PDT The new game from Magicka maker Arrowhead Game Studios was announced during Sony's gamescom presser and it's a step in a different direction. While Helldivers is still very much focused on cooperative play, this title is actually a squad-based overhead shooter. Helldivers will be cross-platform and has been announced for PlayStation 3, PS4, and PS Vita. Reminds me of Starship Troopers, which is a great thing to remind me of. The only good bug is a dead bug, as they say. Better take friends. Read more... |
Hotline Miami 2 coming to Sony platforms next year Posted: 20 Aug 2013 05:56 AM PDT Hotline Miami was one of last year's surprise hits, and since its release, fans have been clamoring for a sequel. We've known for a while now that one was coming, and that it will play off said fervor. Hotline Miami 2 has been shaping up pretty nicely, and it looks like the title won't be limited to PC. At gamescom today, Sony announced that Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number will not only be available on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita some time next year but it will be exclusive to Sony platforms outside of the PC realm.

Guns of Icarus Online coming to PS4 Posted: 20 Aug 2013 05:54 AM PDT Guns of Icarus Online has been out on PC for almost a year at this point, but what about all those people who don't play their video games on a personal computer? Well, Sony has got your back: Guns of Icarus Online is coming to the PlayStation 4. No date has been announced yet, but judging from all the other indie announcements, it may be coming in 2014. This is just a small part of the large indie initiative that Sony has been displaying this year, at both E3 and now Gamescom. They really like indies, guys.

Rogue Legacy coming to PlayStation 4 and Vita next year Posted: 20 Aug 2013 05:51 AM PDT Cellar Door Games' much-loved roguelike Rogue Legacy is coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita next year. The game released earlier this year on PC, but Sony is getting the console exclusivity. People keep pitching the game to me in a variety of ways, like saying it's the best of Castlevania. I've been down for a while, maybe this is my in. I don't know about you, but I think the Vita is the absolute perfect platform for such a game. I've been playing Dragon's Crown compulsively on the thing. No word yet on if it's cross buy.

Everybody's Gone To The Rapture Posted: 20 Aug 2013 05:50 AM PDT Everybody's Gone To The Rapture, a CryEngine-powered game from The Chinese Room, has been unveiled today at Gamescom. A teaser trailer was shown, promising that "The story begins with the end of the world." The title was a clue! It certainly looks interesting. These are the Dear Esther guys, so it'll be a thing, whatever it is!

N++ will be a PlayStation 4 exclusive this winter Posted: 20 Aug 2013 05:50 AM PDT At Sony's gamescom press conference, senior business development manager at SCEE Shahid Ahmad brought word that N++ will be available exclusively on PlayStation 4 when it releases this winter. This was just one of a handful of independent titles announced for Sony systems and although we don't have too much to go on, a few details were discussed. N++ will have new multiplayer modes, thousands of levels, and the ability to create, share, and compete on endless levels of your own creation. I need to redownload my copy of N+ (pictured above) and start building up that muscle memory again.

Mike Bithell's Volume debuting exclusively on PS4/PS Vita Posted: 20 Aug 2013 05:48 AM PDT Mike "Thomas Was Alone" Bithell has a new game coming. It's called Volume and it'll have an exclusive debut on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita this year. Volume will let you create, mix, and share your own game worlds online, though not too much is known beyond that. Knowing Bithell, it will likely be a very charming little game.

12GB PS3 is now available in US and Canada for $199 Posted: 20 Aug 2013 05:45 AM PDT Anyone looking to pick up a new and cheap PS3 is in luck, as a flash-based 12GB SKU has shown up at retailers. The low-storage model sells for $199.99, and is the smallest stock hard drive offered in a PS3, as Sony has always tried to emphasize the digital marketplace. For those not concerned with all that downloadable racket, this might be a nice pick-up. Of course, the small hard drive can be negated if you have an external storage device sitting around, as those are supported through the system's USB ports. The 12GB PS3 is for sale at Best Buy in America; Canucks can nab one at FutureShop.

Posted: 20 Aug 2013 05:45 AM PDT [Ed. note: Bumping our review from last week, as the game is available in stores today.] When I finished Saints Row: The Third in 2011, I left the experience feeling somewhat sad. It was a good game, but it felt shallow, held back, and ultimately a little disappointing. When I finished Saints Row IV in 2013, I left the experience feeling incredibly sad. This time, however, it was for very different reasons. I was genuinely depressed to see the credits roll, because Saints Row IV, in contrast to its predecessor, had given me so much to fall in love with, reaching its conclusion could only ever end in disappointment. It is with a bittersweet heart, then, that I declare Saints Row IV perhaps one of the best open world sandbox games you could ever hope to play, and practically a culmination of everything the genre's worked toward this generation. Is that an exaggerated, hyperbolic, perhaps even pompous statement? Maybe so ... but does a series like Saints Row deserve anything less? Read more... |
Starbound, Fez, and Velocity 2X coming to Vita (Update) Posted: 20 Aug 2013 05:42 AM PDT [Update: As announced on Polytron's official site, Fez will be headed to PS3 as well. Velocity 2X is a top-down shooter with a puzzle-based twist. You command a warp ship capable of teleporting through objects, while trying to race through each stage while battling countless waves of alien foes. Murasaki Baby looks freakishly disturbing Posted: 20 Aug 2013 05:37 AM PDT If you're looking to play some more original games on your Vita, Sony is attempting to accommodate that, amidst a sea of ports. One such original game is the newly announced Murasaki Baby from the Italian studio Ovosonico, which looks like the freakish spawn of Limbo and Invader Zim. Sony says that games like Murasaki Baby will ensure that they have a platform create new and innovative titles on a consistent basis. Although it was tough to tell what the game is even about, it does look intriguing!

Sony to drop PlayStation Vita price to $200 Posted: 20 Aug 2013 05:31 AM PDT We've seen various retailers drop both the Wi-Fi and 3G/Wi-Fi PlayStation Vita models down to $200 recently. It's time, Sony. We're ready for you to introduce that coveted price drop across the board. And Sony is ready as well: a price drop down to $199.99 / €199.99 is happening in the United States and Europe, respectively, as of tomorrow. Perhaps even more exciting than that, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO Jim Ryan promised "significant reductions" in the prices of memory cards for the system. It's about time! The prices are now 4GB ($14.99), 8GB ($19.99), 16GB ($39.99), and 32GB ($79.99). Thanks to Sony's indie push, the portable is getting quite a lot of quality games, even if many of them aren't exclusive. Whatever. It's still a well-made device, one that many of us desperately want to succeed. Let's hope the new pricing is a big step forward.

Borderlands 2 coming to PS Vita (Update) Posted: 20 Aug 2013 05:30 AM PDT [Update: Sony is publishing the title, and Iron Galaxy Studios -- the makers of Divekick -- helped on on bringing the console shooter to the handheld. Borderlands 2 Vita will be out in 2014, and will feature everything the console versions had, including four-player co-op.] Borderlands 2 is coming to PlayStation Vita. Yep, the Gearbox loot n' shoot sequel is going portable, with an upcoming port on the way. That's pretty cool! While we were all hoping to get Aliens: Colonial Marines instead, this lesser known Gearbox release will surely be a welcome addition to the library. I love some of the console ports the Vita is getting, and we could use a good shooter on there! Nice news.

Sony announces free-to-play LittleBigPlanet Hub for PS3 Posted: 20 Aug 2013 05:30 AM PDT LittleBigPlanet Hub is a free-to-play version of MediaMolecule's creative PS3 platformer. The video at Sony's gamescom conference talked about multiplayer, outfits, and the whole creative suite people have some to expect out of LittleBigPlanet. It seems there will also be some content you can purchase. A PlayStation Blog post details LittleBigPlanet Hub. All content from the first two games will be available to purchase in Hub. If you own them, you can fully import your profile to Hub, which will be getting exclusive new content, starting with a new level. Hub affords full, free access to 16 LBP and LBP2 levels. The Create Mode is also available, unrestricted, while it seems like you'll only be able to play staff-selected community creations. LittleBigPlanet really started the culture of sharing and user-generated content at Sony, a culture that trickled into things like inFamous 2. Having a free-to-play version of LittleBigPlanet is a nice way to promote longevity of the PS3 and give a really neat tool/game to a lot of people -- I'm thinking young kids in particular -- that aren't on the cutting edge of "next gen." Plus Sackboy is so cute.

Gran Turismo 6 launches worldwide on December 6 Posted: 20 Aug 2013 05:27 AM PDT December 6, 2013. That's the global launch date that Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO Jim Ryan gave for Gran Turismo 6 during the company's gamescom press conference after showing a bizarre video about concept cars and confirming that this is still only arriving on PS3. There was also confirmation of the Gran Turismo feature film, which series creator Kazunori Yamauchi and Sony Pictures are working on. The hope is for the movie to capture the "adrenaline of the racing world" with a "human dimension inspired by GT Academy."
