Posted: 18 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT

The Killzone: Mercenary open beta will be making planetfall next week. PlayStation Plus subscribers will have the first shot at the title's multiplayer on August 20.

Everyone else will have to wait until August 27 for an opportunity to get in on the action. The beta program be decommissioned on September 3, giving Guerrilla Cambridge an opportunity to make any last minute tweaks ahead of the first-person shooter's September 10 launch.

PC Port Report: Spelunky

Posted: 18 Aug 2013 08:00 AM PDT

[Want to know how a developer handled the PC version of a multiplatform game? Check out the PC Port Report for the full scoop.]

The original Spelunky, now known as Spelunky Classic, was a freeware PC title, but it was XBLA players that got the refined, enhanced version that most of us now think of when the game is mentioned. Left out in the cold, the PC Master Race wept openly, but those dark days are now behind us.

Spelunky is available on Steam, and the good news is that it's just as wonderful as the XBLA version, if not slightly better with the added Daily Challenges. You really have no reason not to don your fedora (this is one of the few occasions where it won't make you look like a twat), grab some rope, and delve into punishing underground realms filled with treasure and pugs.

Sup Holmes rewrites history with Austin Ivansmith

Posted: 18 Aug 2013 07:45 AM PDT

This week on Sup Holmes we welcome Austin Ivansmith (Mighty Switch Force: Hyper Drive, Thor, Ducktales Remastered) back to the program. The last time we had Austin on the show there were game announcements and life changing conversations, so who knows what will happen this time around. I've got the sneaking suspicion that we may even be giving away some Steam codes this time around.

Tune in at 1pm PST/4pm EST and join in the chat as it happens!

Pokemon X and Y soundtrack to ship on four discs

Posted: 18 Aug 2013 07:00 AM PDT

Nintendo is on a roll. After the five-disc Fire Emblem: Awakening soundtrack earlier this year, they're now putting out a four-disc Pokemon X and Y soundtrack titled Nintendo 3DS Pokémon X・Y Super Music Collection. It will be available in November in a physical format in Japan shipping on four discs and containing 212 tracks (three and a half hours of music), and in digital formats around the globe.

The most surprising thing for me, however, is that the physical version pre-order is listed on CD Japan for 2,500 Yen ($25). For four discs of music, and from Japan, where CD prices are exorbitantly high, this comes as a shock. Those who don't want to deal with the import can pick it up on the iTunes international store in November as well, although the price hasn't been announced yet. Keep an eye on the official website for more information.

So how about it? Ready to listen to them all in your free time?

Cryptic Sea EP contains post-modern puzzler Volta

Posted: 18 Aug 2013 06:00 AM PDT

Cryptic Sea (best known for Gish and Hockey?) just released a new set of games for Mac, Windows and Linux for a paltry $3. I haven't gotten that deep into the collection yet, but by far the most striking entry in Cryptic Sea EP is Volta -- a new take on the falling block puzzle genre.

Most puzzle games appeal to the part of the brain that functions like a calculator, which is nice if you want to feel like the concepts of logic and order aren't just illusions. Sadly, that part of the brain can't help us to feel like a child taking their first ever jump on a trampoline. Volta works to bring those those two feelings together, and the tension they bring out is fantastic. It mischievously defies the cold logic that usually comes from putting blocks together by giving them a chaotic life all their own.

In life, things rarely fit together without some unpredictable, profitable, or detrimental bumps along the way. Why should things be any different in our puzzle games?

Nicalis publishing Kemco RPG Grinsia on 3DS

Posted: 18 Aug 2013 05:00 AM PDT

Working for a magazine is different from writing for a blog in a lot of ways. Probably the biggest difference is reading the exclusive news from your publication at the same time the general public does. I just got the latest issue of Nintendo Force in the mail and it's packed with news, comics, and editorial that you won't get anywhere else.

Case in point -- a two-page spread with Nicalis's Tyrone Rodriguez revealing many of the company's plans for the coming years. There's sad news (the WiiWare port of Cave Story was "not successful") and glad news (multiplatform releases!), but the hottest news was that Nicalis will be bringing Kemco JRPG Grinsia to the 3DS.

Kemco has been in the game industry for a long time, having published Spy Vs. Spy way back when on the NES. Their focus in the last few years has been on premium priced 16-bit-sytle RPGs for iPhone and Android, with Grimsia being one of their best. Tyrone has been teasing this for a while, hinting that the game will have some form of new musical arrangement. Hopefully I'll be able to hold him down at PAX and get some time with game in a few weeks.

Drenched in war paint: Thunder debuted in Killer Instinct

Posted: 18 Aug 2013 04:00 AM PDT

single tomahawk was all it took during the Killer Instinct demonstration at EVO 2013 for fans to speculate the return of Thunder as the fourth announced character in the upcoming Xbox One free-to-play fighter.

In a recent video posted over at IGN, the team at Double Helix has finally pulled back the curtain and officially announced the Native American axe-wielding warrior. The reveal highlights a more stoic Thunder who has evolved from his days of tossing flaming phoenixs from afar into a devastating grappler archetype. It also debuts his new stage, set amongst a gorgeous canyon backdrop that clearly pays homage to the legendary bridge stage from the series' first game.

In his transformation to an up-close and impersonal grappler, Thunder has retained his triplax and sammamish (rising uppercut) attacks while picking up a few new moves like the low-attacking ankle slicer. For the most part his triplax remains relatively unchanged, but his sammamish now possess invulnerability through projectiles, as well as a foot stomp that can be executed during the moves apex. Additionally, his shadow technique (which looks amazing as a cloud of ravens trails his motions) contains a hit of armor protection which allows him to break through opponent's attacks at close range.

I really dig the new look for Thunder. It's simplistic and not as overtly stereotypical as his 1994 design. The changeover to a grappler also seems quite smart as it adds a well rounded layer of balance to the game's current roster and a level of freshness to an already established character. I am bummed his phoenix projectile is absent, but I think he's got enough tools in his arsenal for pretty much any occasion.

The next character reveal for Killer Instinct is scheduled for gamescom in Germany according to a tweet from designer David Verfaillie. At this point I really only see two options: femme fatale Orchid or a brand new character. Either way I willing to bet the fifth fighter will be female.

The Guided Fate Paradox headed west on November 5

Posted: 18 Aug 2013 02:00 AM PDT

Though NIS America's last title left much to be desired, I can't help but be overly optimistic for the release of The Guided Fate Paradox.

Set to release November 5, the upcoming PlayStation 3 exclusive roguelike will be available in two editions. Astride the standard edition and true to typical NISA fashion, The Guided Fate Paradox will also get a pretty swag little collectors set

Priced at $74.99, and exclusive to NISA's online store, the limited edition box set will include: a full-cover art book, two-disc original soundtrack, eight character cards, and an exclusive mat framed art print by game's artist Noizi Ito.

Dood! That's a lot of cool stuff, but as long as the game's opening theme -- which you can also sample in the trailer above -- makes the cut on the OST I think I might be sold. Operatic Japanese metal... does it get any better?
