| High School, the Video Game High School videogame Posted: 17 Aug 2013 02:00 PM PDT In last week's episode of web series Video Game High School, the character Ki created a videogame based on lead protagonist Brian D's troubled first week of class. In other words, it was a game adaptation of VGHS Season 1, appropriately titled High School Video Game. Though that version of the game is exclusive to the show's universe, Joel Sinclair of Newgrounds used the art from the fake game to create a real one in Flash. Each event in Brian's life is represented as a clone of a popular NES game, such as Mega Man, Super Mario Bros., Punch-Out!!, and Contra. Not perfect recreations by any means, but you get the idea. It's very short, so you can clear it in no time at all. Just something to occupy yourself on a lazy Saturday evening. VGHS the Flash Video Game! [Rocket Jump] |
| Details on Mega Man The Board Game sound wild Posted: 17 Aug 2013 01:00 PM PDT While Jasco Games' Mega Man CCG is more or less ready to ship out the door, Mega Man The Board Game is still a work in progress. However, Jasco did go into some detail at Gen Con about how the game will progress and how it can be expanded. The game is intended for two to five players, although expansions can increase that number to eight. Each player controls Mega Man (other heroes may be introduced later), and your goal is to be the first to stop Dr. Wily by clearing challenges and defeating Robot Masters, who will relinquish their powers. Movement and other play dynamics are managed by a custom card deck rather than dice. The base game focuses on Mega Man 1 elements, though further expansions covering the sequels can be played standalone or mixed and matched with one another. Jasco has the game basics down and could start manufacturing sets right away, but it hopes to improve the game through a Kickstarter beginning next month. The campaign will increase the quality and add new features, such as miniature figurines -- uncolored sculpts of Mega Man and Cut Man can be seen in the gallery below. To keep up with the board game's progress, be sure to follow its Facebook page. Also be sure to mention how Capcom has forsaken you, because Jasco is totally the same company as Capcom. | Pokemon retrospective hints are new game Posted: 17 Aug 2013 12:00 PM PDT Pokemon X/Y is almost upon us, and Nintendo is brimming with joy over their pending release, with new cartoons and other promotional tidings flowing from every orifice. Case in point, a new retrospective video that takes us through the chronological history of the Pokemon games, including the card game and that weird Japan-only arcade collectible disc-based thing. Notably missing are the Pokemon Rumble games. All the more evidence that they're the new black sheep of the Pokemon family. The video culminates on Pokemon X/Y, though a few minutes after that climax, we're teased to a few seconds of mysterious footage of Lucario and Blaziken facing off in a high-polygon count world. They're facing off in a place that looks more like real life Tokyo than the environments we usually get in the Pokemon games, with skyscrapers, billboards, strange lettering, and giant Pokemon balloons floating in the background. This could be anything from a CGI Pokemon film to a sequel to Hey You Pikachu!, but the safe bet is that we're getting a new Pokemon X/Y compatible game for the Wii U sometime soon. It would be smart to go with a more fleshed out title like Pokemon Colosseum and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness than a battle-only release like Pokemon Battle Revolution, though Pokemon-anything would certainly be better for the Wii U than nothing at this point. |
| Indie JRPG Project Phoenix raises $500,000 in first week Posted: 17 Aug 2013 11:00 AM PDT A cosmopolitan team of developers with experience working on titles such as Valkyria Chronicles, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Diablo III, and the Final Fantasy series have joined forces to create Project Phoenix, an indie Japanese role-playing game. The venture is headlined by director Hiroaki Yura, fantasy novelist Yoko Enoki, legendary composer Nobuo Uematsu, and a growing staff of talented creators with experience working on everthing from Halo 4 to The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. A crowdfunding campaign to finance the enterprise kicked off earlier this week and surpassed its $100,000 goal within nine hours of launch. To date, the project has raised more than $500,000 with over three weeks remaining. Creative Intelligence Arts assert the title is currently in pre-production and is planned for release in 2015 on Windows PC, Mac, and Linux. The group is also considering iOS, Android, PlayStation 4, and PS Vita versions should the endeavor generate enough capital. That doesn't sound like it should be a problem. | The man that named Scribblenauts is making Regular Show Posted: 17 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT On last week's episode of Sup Holmes (now in iTunes and t-shirt form), we were introduced to Mr. Jeff Luke, formerly of 5TH Cell and current director at WayForward. We spoke with Jeff about how to fake it to make it, what it was like to be a part of the Scribblenauts craze that hit at E3 2009, how it feels to see the series move on without his involvement, being discriminated against for being Mexican when you are not Mexican, singing the theme song for Double Dragon Neon, his current work on Regular Show: Mordecai and Rigby in 8-Bit Land, and a lot more. Jeff and Regular Show creator J.G. Quintel quickly bonded over a mutual appreciation of the Sega Master System, and that bond was big influence on their game's development. Specifically, the character switching hook of lesser known platformer Psycho Fox helped to inspire Regular Show's multi-mode mechanics. Blaster Master was also a big inspiration for Jeff. Knowing that has me all the more confident that the game is in good hands. Thanks again to Jeff for hanging out with us, and tune in this Sunday at 1pm PST/4pm EST as WayForgust continues with Ducktales Remastered's Austin Ivansmith. It's going to be spec-quack-ular. |
| The Chaos Engine hits Steam and GOG.com this month Posted: 17 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT Abstract Games, the folks responsible for porting Hotline Miami to PlayStation 3 and Vita, has also been working to restore The Chaos Engine / Soldiers of Fortune. The classic top-down shooter will have some additions, like revised graphics and 16-directional movement, but such features are largely optional. By all accounts, this won't be another painful awful remake -- instead, it's being pitched as a "restoration." Exactly what I want. The new version is hitting Steam, GOG.com, and Get Games on August 29, 2013 for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Normally, it'll be $9.99, but you can save a buck by pre-purchasing now. "There are many fond memories of The Chaos Engine and I wanted to make sure that the game was true to the original without losing its charm during the restoration process," says Bitmap Brothers founding member Mike Montgomery. "The option to play in the original ‘Classic’ mode with the added option to play in ‘Enhanced mode’ with its refined pixel-perfect finish is a clever way to satisfy all enthusiasts!" Being able to play this again in 2013 is pretty freakin' cool. |
| Contest: Win a code for Cannon Brawl! Posted: 17 Aug 2013 08:00 AM PDT Cannon Brawl is the kind of game I never knew I wanted until it existed. And now that I've seen it in action, I can't wait to get my hands on it! This mix of artillery and real-time strategy is currently available via Steam early access for just 10 bucks (or $15 if you buy two), so go check it out! Want to know more? Ask a question about Cannon Brawl! The developers, Pete and Theresa, will answer 50 of your questions right here in this very comments thread, and if they pick yours, you'll win a code for the game! You can ask them about the development process, their inspirations, or anything else your brain can come up with that you think they might like to answer. | What's going on with that Jeklynn Heights now? Posted: 17 Aug 2013 07:00 AM PDT It's been quite some time since we talked about Jeklynn Heights, but longtime readers will know I do enjoy talking about it. For those not in the know, it's an indie multiplayer PC game set in a world dripping with dark fairytale design, in which poor and rich people battle it out for supremacy. The studio behind it recently released new footage -- still no hard gameplay, but the video shows off the environments and one of the player characters. Still looking really promising! I hope we get to see more full-fledged stuff soon. |
| Xbox One games won't be region locked Posted: 17 Aug 2013 06:00 AM PDT The Xbox One has been delayed in several countries. That's a bummer. There's some good news though, as Xbox One games won't be region locked!. "When the console launches this November, we will support Xbox One in 13 markets," Microsoft told Eurogamer. "Xbox One may be used in all countries, including the non-launched markets. In addition, Xbox One games are not region locked. Any Xbox One game purchased at retail can be used in any country on any Xbox One." Microsoft added that you'll need a valid payment method corresponding to to a console's launch origin. That, and some content may not be available everywhere due to content restrictions some content right holders may impose on stuff like music and movies. | Meet the voices behind Saints Row IV Posted: 17 Aug 2013 05:00 AM PDT Not much longer now! Saints Row IV is almost out and it's a pretty amazing game. Seriously, check out our review. The wait can be painful, so here's a new trailer for the game giving us a behind-the-scenes look at some of the voice actors. There's Troy Baker, Terry Crews, Daniel Dae Kim, and Laura Bailey just to name a few. Also you get a quick look at the tentacle bat. It doesn't talk, which seems kind of like a missed opportunity here. |
| Check out Atomic Wonder Woman in Infinite Crisis Posted: 17 Aug 2013 04:00 AM PDT I'm not a MOBA player at all, but I can appreciate the genre, especially the character designs. And in the case of Infinite Crisis, I love what developer Turbine is doing with the Atomic universe for the DC heroes. Just look at Wonder Woman! Everything from her ridiculous outfit to her wielding a crazy chainsaw as a weapon just screams awesome. Those of you at gamescom will have a chance to play as Atomic Wonder Woman in the Coast City map. Otherwise, she'll become available in the closed beta that you can sign-up for starting on August 21. |
| Massive: The Division's player versus player is its hook Posted: 17 Aug 2013 03:00 AM PDT It's no secret that Ubisoft is aiming to blur the line between single- and multiplayer experiences. That's the predominant theme with a lot of its upcoming titles. Surprisingly, the Tom Clancy's The Division developers don't consider this to necessarily be the hook for their game. Rather, they think it's the player versus player component. The Division's game director Ryan Bernard spoke with Official Xbox Magazine and said that Massive's approach to PvP will be a difference-maker. He explained that the gamble of losing your hard-earned gear is what makes these scenarios so riveting. "We want player versus player to be meaningful, and the way (it) gets meaningful is you need to have something to lose - it's not just a scorecard in a multiplayer map," Bernard stated. Bernard believes that the focus on PvP will significantly better The Division. Ideally, it will cause a heightened sense of tension as players explore the city, as they'll never know where potential threats may come from. "This is a world that's coming apart, it's a scary place," Bernard said. "We really want to play with that, to enhance the experience." | Pokemon: The Origin stars Red, goes back to the start Posted: 17 Aug 2013 02:30 AM PDT In the original English version of Pokemon Red/Blue, you can give your character a custom name, or go with preset names Red, Ash, or Jack. It may seem like a small thing, but to Pokemon super-fans, these names represent a huge divide, particularly when it comes to Ash and Red. To many, Ash is the character from the Pokemon anime who symbolizes a watered-down, goodie-goodie, "pandering to the lowest common denominator" side of Pokemon. They see Red as a completely different person, only known to those that follow the manga and the games, symbolizing the colder, more serious, mainstream-rejecting "hardcore" side of the Pokemon experience. In short, Red is the hipster version of Ash -- so whatever you do, don't mix them up in public. That's part of why the official name for the "Ash/Red/Jack" character in Teenage Pokemon is just "Trainer." We didn't want to buy into all that Pokemon fan class distinction weirdness. Thankfully for diehard Red supporters, Nintendo will be embracing that weirdness in just a few months. Starting on October 2nd, they'll be rolling out an all new anime that retells the story of Pokemon Red/Blue, staring Red and his rival Blue (as opposed to Ash and Gary), featuring character designs that are more loyal to the games. It's currently unknown if this is the start of a new series or is just a one-off special, but you can bet if Red gets his own show, it won't be long before people start hating on him while claiming that Jack is the best that ever was. |
| We'll find out the PS4's release date at gamescom Posted: 17 Aug 2013 02:00 AM PDT An unassuming page on the UK PlayStation website has seemingly confirmed what many of us were thinking: that gamescom would be a rather nice destination for Sony to announce the PlayStation 4's launch date. "We'll kick off the show at 18:00 BST on 20 August 2013 with a briefing to media on our release plans for PlayStation 4, as well as updates on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita," reads the site. The press conference itself will be streamed live and we'll of course be in attendance. And by "we," I mean just Dale North, because he's headed to Cologne alone. Poor Dale. Frankly, as much as I want to hear more about the new console, I'm not exactly worried about it, at this point. The Vita, on the other hand, I'm not so sure about. Restore my faith, Sony. |
| Activision bringing Destiny, Ghosts, more to gamescom Posted: 17 Aug 2013 01:00 AM PDT Activision will be at gamescom and are planning to wave their giant wads of money around as they will have the biggest ever demo-theater ever built in gamescom history for Destiny. It comes in at 72ft in length, 43ft wide, and is the height of a three story house at 26ft. All in all, this will seat 192 people per demo to witness a seven-player live-demo of Destiny. Fans can also get pictures taken with this Fallen statue in the video here, plus participate in other activities revolving around the game. For games attendees can actually play, there will be some Call of Duty: Ghosts multiplayer action happening. There will be a livestream on Wednesday at 18:00 CET revealing more details for the multiplayer. Skylanders SWAP Force will be playable too, but you'll have to go to Sony's booth to experience it either on the PS3 or PS4. Finally, Angry Birds Star Wars will be on showcase at the Xbox booth, but there's something seriously wrong with you if you go to a show like gamescom and make time to see an Angry Birds game. Angry Birds is fun, but, you know, you can be playing it on your phone right now. |
| Before Minecraft, Notch made a crappy Sonic fan game Posted: 16 Aug 2013 10:00 PM PDT A great way to waste time is to Google any odd topic that happens to pop into your head and play a game of link tag until you strike pay dirt. My latest excursion led me to Sonic Racer 4K, a Java-based Sonic fan game. But what really caught my attention was the name of the developer: Markus Persson. You know, the Minecraft guy. After a little more digging, I discovered an old resume that he still hosts on the Mojang page, even though it's no longer directly linked anywhere on the site. Turns out Notch was a frequent participant in the Java 4K Programming Contest, which tasks entrants to create a Java game with a total file size less than 4K bytes. Sonic Racer 4K was a 2005 submissions, but he also made other 4K fan games, including MEGA4KMAN and Left 4K Dead. I don't know how much of this is common knowledge, but it's certainly a big surprise to me. I like learning about what folks did before they were famous. As for the games themselves, they are impressive considering the constraints, even if they are kind of poopy. Test them out yourselves! |
| The marvelous cosplay of Otakon 2013 Posted: 16 Aug 2013 08:00 PM PDT The BeatDownBoogie crew went to Otakon 2013 and did what they do best. Cosplay montage! There was a ton of amazing cosplay going on, and I really can't decide which one was my favorite. I do like how Castle Crashers cosplay still happens to this day. Part one above, and part two below. Enjoy! And check out some still photos over on Japanator. |
| Nick Arcade, the 21st century Mega64 reboot Posted: 16 Aug 2013 06:00 PM PDT One of the coolest game shows from back in the day was Nick Arcade on Nickelodeon. For those too young to remember or living outside the US, it was a quiz show with a videogame hook. There would be "Video Challenge" rounds in which contestants would play one of the available 16-bit games and try to meet a specified score or goal. And the winning team from the main game would get to enter the "Video Zone," a virtual reality room that literally put the players inside a videogame. So awesome. Mega64 is bringing Nick Arcade back for the 21st century. The games are a little different, but hopefully you'll agree that the spirit is the same. Mega64 Video - Nick Arcade [GameTrailers] |
| The Daily Hotness: Chef's Surprise Posted: 16 Aug 2013 04:59 PM PDT I've never had the touch for culinary arts. Like piano and art lessons, it's one of those things I wish I would have spent more time cultivating as a child. Now I regret that decision even more, as our own Steven Hansen shows us that cooking is the next breakthrough in the videogame jourmnalizm. When this spreads like wildfire, just remember you saw it here first. Today, Dragon Age: Inquisition brings back elves and dwarf options for player characters, Fraser gives us his review of Dishonored's final piece of DLC, Ryu Hayabusa and Strider Hiryu have a Death Battle, Persona 4 Arena's newest iteration starts field testing, and Hamza brings us a video preview of Call of Duty: Ghosts . | Dragon Age: Inquisition caters to all races Posted: 16 Aug 2013 04:00 PM PDT Am I still going to be derided for admitting that I rather liked Dragon Age II's Hawke? The focus on a human character was more in line with the second outing in Thedas' narrower vision, and I found that I wasn't all that fussed about not being able to play a dwarf or an elf. That said, more choices are always welcome. Game Informer has discovered that, despite what BioWare initially stated, racial choices are returning in Dragon Age: Inquisition. I confess that I am pretty excited to be able to run around the world as a dwarf in his underwear once more. BioWare has made a big deal out of listening to fan feedback, especially after the extensive criticism of Inquisition's predecessor, and adding race choices was down to fans clamouring for such a feature. I certainly don't want the game to be designed by committee, but I'm glad that the studio is open to making changes if the desire from fans is strong enough. So, what's going to be your race of choice. I'm a dwarf man, myself. It's all about the magnificent beards. The Return Of Races in Dragon Age: Inquisition [Game Informer] |
