GTA, CoD, & Dishonored Multiplayer! Plus: Prey 2 Reboot?

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 03:30 PM PDT

Hey gang! I'm back from my important business trip to give you hard-hitting news about video games! Hooray!

Today we talk about Grand Theft Auto Online, which sounds totally nuts, and apparently involves submarines?! Dying Light looks a bit familiar, Prey 2 IS being worked on by Arkane Studios, who might also have a multiplayer Dishonored in the works, and Thief has fog, lanterns, and a release date. Finally, Call of Duty: Ghosts is a Call of Duty game, complete with multiplayer. Obviously.

Preview: Licking everyone in Pokemon X and Y

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 02:30 PM PDT

Pokemon X and Pokemon Y are currently playable in Japan at the Pokemon Game Show. We got a look at the same hands-on demo, minus the 10 minute time limit and the assuredly hours-long line.

The demo opens with you as a random trainer -- there are six core options that can be customized -- with one of the three starter Pokemon. I began as the delightful, pink hat clad Yvonne, with a Fennekin. It's been a long while since I've had a fire starter and I have to admit that the cute little guy warmed my icy heart.

Disney has spent over $100M on Infinity development

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 02:00 PM PDT

Wall Street Journal has a report stating that Disney has spent well over $100 million on the development of Disney Infinity. That's for both the game, and all of the toys that can work for it. Disney has had a very rocky history in the game development world, and if this game fails than things could be pretty disastrous for the company.

Except, I don't think Disney has anything to worry about here. Look, the Skylanders series has made over $1 billion in the two years that it's existed, which is impressive considering it was a brand new IP.

Disney is Disney. They have years of history that has created an insane loyal fan base that will buy the toys for Infinity for the collectors value alone. Plus all the methods of promotion at their disposal from movies to the Disney Channel itself. I'd be shocked if they can't pull in $1 billion in half the time it took Activision with Skylanders. Even faster if they ever announce a Marvel and Star Wars crossover for Infinity.

Castle of Illusion out first week of September

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 01:00 PM PDT

Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse will be out on September 3 for the PlayStation Network, and September 4 for Xbox Live Arcade and PC. It'll run you $14.99 across all platforms.

Starting on August 20 and until September 2, those of you that pre-order the game for the PlayStation Network will be given the original Genesis version of the game. Plus, you'll be given the game immediately after your pre-order is placed. You'll also get a dynamic theme, and three avatars for putting down money early.

That's a pretty sweet bonus, and I love it when companies include the original with their updated re-releases.

EA 'didn't give a sh*t about FIFA'

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 12:30 PM PDT

It may seem surprising considering the sales juggernaut it became but Electronic Arts wasn't initially keen on making the first installment in the long running FIFA series. "EA didn't give a sh*t about FIFA," says former EA marketing man Neil Thewarapperuma. In a great retrospective posted on MCV, some of the original design team recall how they had to twist EA's arm into expanding their sports range into including football.

“I said that we should be in the worldwide football business," says Bruce McMillian of EA Canada, one of the original FIFA Soccer two development teams. "But when I first said that, EA was like: ‘well we are already in the football business with Madden.’ I said: ‘No, I mean proper football.'"

Up until that point, Sensible Soccer was my favourite, with it's fast action and top down viewpoint. The FIFA dev team had to come up with a new approach to Football that would win fans away from their rival.

The isometric viewpoint was cribbed from a prototype volleyball game but it was something that set it apart from it's top-down brethren. Whilst the development was split between Canada and the UK, the final game sold half a million units in a month and firmly established the series. I miss the older, more arcade stylings of the original FIFA (and Sensi) but I can see how EA are keen to really simulate the full football experience with the newer FIFA games.

Games for Windows Live Marketplace closing soon

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 12:00 PM PDT

The Xbox.com PC Marketplace, which is where you can go to purchase Games for Windows Live titles, you non-existent person, you, is about to shut down. Microsoft has set its closure for the very near future: August 22, 2013. "We encourage you to spend your Microsoft Points balance prior to this change," writes the company. "Although you will not be able to purchase new games, you can continue to enjoy previously purchased content by downloading it through the Games for Windows Live client software as usual."

Developers have moved away from incorporating Games for Windows Live in recent times, and thank goodness for that. I'm struggling to come up with even a single example of its usage that wasn't an extra annoyance to deal with. That's sadly the best case scenario. As such, I can't say I was ever compelled to buy through Microsoft's soon-to-be-removed storefront.

Indie Statik got a humorous response from Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet's Michel Gagné, who commented that "[the game] will continue to be available on Steam. In fact, soon it will be GFWL-free. Thank God!" Pretty much.

The evolution of PlayStation's graphics over the years

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 11:30 AM PDT

The PlayStation Access channel has been doing a great job of building up hype for the upcoming launch of the PlayStation 4. Their latest video is no different, as it takes a bunch of games from across PlayStation's history and shows the graphical evolutions over time.

We're seeing a bunch of genres covered here, and it's a trip down memory lane as we see games from the PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and finally PlayStation 4 all compared to one another.

Call of Duty: Ghosts will have higher-res textures on PC

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 11:00 AM PDT

PC gamers have come to expect a little something extra -- a lot extra, in some cases -- from multiplatform games. With Infinity Ward's Call of Duty titles, however, you're setting yourself up for disappoint with that kind of mindset. Prior PC versions haven't been anything to write home about but, according to executive producer Mark Rubin, that changes with Call of Duty: Ghosts. "Now, PC has its own set of assets," he told Kotaku.

"It's going to look better than any Call of Duty we've ever made on PC," he continued. We'd certainly hope so! Rubin elaborated about the assets, saying: "They're actually using an even higher version in many cases than the next-gen consoles, from a texture standpoint."

After missing the last few releases, I think I might give Ghosts a chance if for no other reason than building out a squad and competing against others' sounds like a nice break from the incessant frustration that would await me in matches against real players. PC version it is.

Live show: Worms Clan Wars

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 10:30 AM PDT

[Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.]

After an amazing week of live gaming awesomeness on Mash Tactics, I'm more than ready to kill it off this evening by hanging out with the Dtoid.TV community, and getting some multiplayer gaming in. Tonight we'll be playing the recently released, Worms Clan Wars, and I couldn't be more excited. We've played an unhealthy amount of Worms Revolution at the live channel over the past year, and as sad as it is to leave an old friend behind, I really feel like it's about that time to move onto the newest iteration.

You might also remember that I got to show off the newest title in the Worms franchise last week, however since it wasn't out to the public yet I was relegated to playing the single-player portion, and to be honest, who the hell wants to play a game like this by themselves? Not me, that's for damn sure. If you want to see the game in action, get over to the channel tonight and watch our very first matches against each other in what is bound to become yet another staple of our multiplayer get togethers.

Review: Dishonored: The Brigmore Witches

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT

I'm meant to be playing a cold, calculating murderer -- a man who assassinated an empress and gave her innocent daughter to traitors. So why am I hiding atop a broken chandelier, a mess of tightly wound nerves and sweat? Because I pissed off a witch, that's why. A whole coven of witches, actually. And they are hunting me down, not like nervous gang members searching for a ghost, but like predatory animals.

The Brigmore Witches, Dishonored's second expansion, might begin mere hours after The Knife of Dunwall ends, but it's a different beast. The horror that existed on the peripheries of the previous outings is now center stage, and with it comes greater challenges while peeling back the layers of Dunwall and the surrounding isles, revealing its darkest elements. This is Dishonored at its very best.

Ubisoft's digital boss says retail sales won't go away

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 09:30 AM PDT

It may seem like we're moving toward a world where it's more common to have your library of videogames stored on a hard drive instead of a shelf, but Ubisoft's VP of digital publishing doesn't quite completely envision that scenario. He thinks that retail stores are here to stay.

Chris Early told GamesIndustry International that he "think(s) retail's a strong part of our industry and it will continue to be so, and maybe that's funny coming from a digital guy." Early elaborated that "the physical store is a well-designed mechanism for discovery. You have expert help right there, a wide variety of products you can go through relatively quickly. That's hard to do still on a console or a PC. There's lots of content, but how do you easily discover what's the best thing to do? We haven't solved that."

For all the kind words he had for brick-and-mortar stores, he didn't discount digital sales either. Early explained that digital lends itself extremely well to episodic publishing. He cited this year's Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon as a great success for Ubisoft in that the company was able to take an existing engine and tweak the experience to result in tremendous sales. Early continued by explaining that Ubisoft intends to experiment more with episodic gaming in ways similar to Blood Dragon.

Expect five DLC packs for Payday 2 this year

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Clarifying what exactly "a year of DLC" for Payday 2 looks like, game director David Goldfarb told Joystiq that there are five DLC packs planned "for the coming year." As expected, the content itself will be a mix of premium and free content "just like we did with the first game."

And that's fair enough, as far as I'm concerned. Overkill Software seems to have learned quite a bit from the first game, so finding that balance -- offering enough free DLC alongside the paid stuff -- should be well within the studio's grasp.

Knowing the dedication of Payday fans, mods are something I'd potentially be even more interested in. "We would love to add support for creating community generated content," according to Goldfarb. For now, the team will "continue to look into this."

Many of you are familiar with our Friday Night Fights, but did you also know that we have several other community driven play dates throughout the week? It’s true!

Here’s a quick recap:

Wii U indies dish about their eShop experience

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Even though Nintendo has taken enormous measures to welcome indie developers onto the Wii U, and despite a cavalcade of promising indie titles set to arrive on the eShop in the near future, Wii U's digital service is not that hot of a conversation topic around the web. It makes sense -- the console itself is not selling well, thus it's not at the forefront of people's minds. But what do the indies themselves think? Are they happy with the Wii U thus far? What do they think needs to be done?

Gamasutra recently got in touch with 20 different eShop devs in order to pick their brains about the state of Wii U. In contrast with what the big-time studios are saying, these guys are much more willing to give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt. They understand that the Wii U is only now starting to receive a solid stable of first-party software that could boost hardware sales, but even with the low ownership numbers, they are confident that their Wii U efforts will make them money. Some want to see how their initial contributions will perform before pledging further support, but they are nonetheless pleased with how much direct assistance Nintendo has provided.

There are legitimate concerns, but the overall consensus is a positive one. I've pulled a few choice responses and posted them below; please visit Gamasutra to read the rest.

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs set for September 10

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 07:00 AM PDT

After a few false starts, Frictional Games and thechineseroom have what looks to be the finalized release date for Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. It's felt like a long wait given the sharp rise in popularity of The Dark Descent these past couple years, but we're less than a month out from the September 10, 2013 launch on GOG.com and Steam. It's nearly here.

Watching this short trailer was enough to remind me that I could use another few weeks to mentally prepare myself. That audio design sent chills down my spine. If you're set on getting A Machine for Pigs, now would be the time to buy -- you'll save four bucks off the regular $19.99 price tag by pre-purchasing on either of the aforementioned platforms.

Play Guild Wars 2 for free next weekend

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 06:30 AM PDT

With the one-year anniversary for Guild Wars 2 rapidly approaching, ArenaNet has plans to host a free trial weekend soon. That'll kick off on Friday, August 23 at 12:01am Pacific and carry through Sunday, August 25 at 11:59pm Pacific.

If my fondness of the game despite an inability to enjoy essentially all other MMORPGs is any indication, this will be worth taking a look at even if you aren't usually into these types of online experiences. Guild Wars 2 has done quite well for itself, with ArenaNet claiming it to be the fastest-selling Western MMO thanks to three million sales in its first nine months.

Granted, there's no monthly subscription, and that's definitely a factor -- but I'm not about to hold that against the game.

Movie Defense Force: Silent Hill

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 06:00 AM PDT

My movie review show, Movie Defense Force, has another videogame-based film on the block this week, so I am sharing it here for your delicious viewing. I'm talking about the 2006 Silent Hill movie -- maligned by all when it first came out, but probably one of the better adaptations out there.

Of course, defending the sequel would be way more challenging ... and I plan on doing that, too!

Xbox Live Gold freebies: Dead Rising 2 and Case Zero

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 05:30 AM PDT

Does the screenshot say it all? If not, let's be clear: you should check out Dead Rising 2. Especially if you're still hanging onto that Xbox Live Gold account of yours, because the game is free as of today through the Games With Gold program.

That's not all, either -- Dead Rising 2: Case Zero, the standalone DLC that helped ease us into Chuck Greene's story of being a good father and sometimes riding a tricycle in his boxers, is also a part of this promotion. Be sure to play it first if you want to carry over PP, clothing, and Combo Cards for a little head start in the full DR2.

These will remain free through the end of August, so don't take too much time.

A la cartridge: Dragon's Crown pork monster

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 05:00 AM PDT

Food is good. Videogames are good. Food inspired by videogames are doubleplusgood. It's simple science. Science and art. I would like to humbly present the first episode of Steven Hansen's À la cartridge, a straightforward cooking show where I teach you how to make tasty things and talk about the games that inspire them.

In my quest to become the Alton Brown of videogames, will I become videogames' Guy Fieri? Will I remember to get a knife sharpener so I don't swear into the camera when I cut myself? Will the sorceress in Dragon's Crown invest in proper bust support to nip future back problems in the bud?

Find out by watching the inaugural episode, in which I cook a gigantic pork shoulder and rosemary potatoes (full recipe below). And tell me what I can do to improve. What upcoming games might you want to see a dish for?

Super Mario RPG battle system inspired by children's toy

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 04:30 AM PDT

Of the two Mario RPG sub-series, Mario & Luigi is much closer in tone and spirit to Super Mario RPG on the Super Nintendo. That's because M&L developer AlphaDream consists of former Square employees who worked on the plumber's first role-playing adventure.

To commemorate the release of Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, IGN interviewed key Nintendo and AlphaDream members on the series' development history. Yoshihiko Maekawa, Super Mario RPG co-director and Dream Team co-producer, explained how Nintendo gave AlphaDream permission to inject Luigi with an original personality for the first M&L. He also addressed fans' desire to see Mallow and Geno return in a future M&L installment -- Geno made a super brief cameo in Superstar Saga, if you recall.

The big element that Super Mario RPG was known for and saw further evolution in the M&L series was the innovative timing-based battle system. "That was very much inspired by a children's toy that was available in Japan at the time," Maekawa recalled. "It was like a large laptop with these buttons that would play music. You had to press the buttons with good timing to the music. It was that idea, having gameplay built around timing button presses, that inspired me to hybridize these two genres of game, to get a little bit of action and RPG into the same game."

Be sure to read the full interview at the link below.

In addition to all the anime, and gaming taking place throughout the weekend, the Expo will also allow con-goers a taste of Japanese culture.

There's going to be martial arts demos, traditional crafts, and lots of yummy food in Santa Clara on August 23rd-25th, and we want to make sure we meet up with some of our readers while there, so we'll be giving away some tickets!

Batman: Arkham Origins' villainous collector's edition

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 02:00 AM PDT

Last week we were shown the UK-exclusive Batman: Arkham Origins Collector's Edition. Now, it's time for argument because the North American Collector's Edition has been detailed. The biggest change is the giant statue. The North American version is all about the rogues, leaving Batman out completely. I'm okay with that. He featured prominently enough in the last two great Arkham Collector's Editions.

Aside from the statue we have: an 80-page, hardcover art book; two pieces of Gotham PD evidence (a casino chip and a tooth); a dossier on the eight assassins targeting Batman; a skin from Batman's first ever appearance; the Deathstroke Challenge Pack; and Necessary Evil: Super-Villains of DC Comics, a documentary on Batman's villains. There are a few other odds and ends, like a weird family portrait of the Wayne family. The PS3 version also comes with the exclusive Knightfall pack.

Okay. Hash it out. Which Collector's Edition is better? It comes down to the statue, I think, but both are rather excellent. I prefer the straight Joker, North American option slightly. What about you? Anyone over Collector's Editions yet? I think Catherine's is the only I've picked up this generation.

New Adventure Time game gets 3DS-only collector's edition

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 01:30 AM PDT

The upcoming Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON'T KNOW! looks great. I enjoyed my hands-on time with the game, which has gone in a decidedly different direction from the Zelda II-styled Hey Ice King! Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?.

Explore the Dungeon Because I DON'T KNOW! is coming to PS3, 360, Wii U, and 3DS, but the latter is getting an exclusive collector's edition, which comes in a Beemo steelbook case. It also comes with a behind the scenes DVD and the "Finn and Jake’s Dungeon Guide," a "full color, enhanced manual filled with fun art and game tips." The 3DS version of EtDBIDK! is priced at $29.95, ten bucks less than the other versions. The 3DS collector's edition will be $39.95, the same price as the 360, Wii U, and PS3 versions.

The Wii U also has some exclusive content in the form of Beemo appearing on the Wii U gamepad with over 300 voice clips that will comment on the game and offer tips. Beemo will also appear on the bottom of the 3DS' screen, but without the voice clips. Enticing enough of a package? Planning on picking up the cooperative dungeon crawler on a different system?

Thief coming out on February 25, 2014 for Xbox One & PS4

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 01:00 AM PDT

We've been talking a lot about some big AAA games the past few days, so what's one more to close out the week?

Thief is looking mighty fine based on our hands-on time, and we're going to have wait until next year before we can steal whatever we want. Thief will be out on February 25, 2014 for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.

In the mean time, here's a brand new cinematic trailer that showcases what's going on in the overall world while you're busy stealing things. The rich are taking everything from themselves, while the poor struggle to survive.

Mega Man card game will make me even more poor

Posted: 16 Aug 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Jasco Games, the company currently making that Mega Man board game, is using the same license to produce a set of cards as part of its Universal Fighting System line. I say without any sarcasm or cynicism that I think this is pretty cool.

Jasco is currently at Gen Con in Indiana showing off the Mega Man UFS cards to the public. Inside each of those spiffy tins is a starter deck, three booster packs, three Robot Master promo cards, and a vinyl playmat. Art from both the games and the Archie comics adorn the merch, which ought to go on sale this October for $30 a tin.

I don't play CCGs, but I love card collecting. I haven't had a proper card collection in years, so I'm due to get back in the habit. And maybe I'll try to learn the UFS rules at some point, too.

NPD: NCAA Football and 3DS rise to the top in July

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 11:00 PM PDT

Thursday was NPD day, a day of celebration and / or commiseration throughout the US gaming industry. The big winners in terms of hardware and software were 3DS and NCAA Football 14. This marks the third straight month that 3DS has been in the top position, and as for NCAA... well... it's an American football game selling to an American audience. It's spot was secured.

For the industry overall, total sales were $443 million, a drop of 19% from last July. 3DS hardware shrugged off this slump by increasing 14%, hitting roughly 141K units. 3DS software climbed 45% from last July, thanks chiefly to Animal Crossing: New Leaf, which sold another 150K across digital and retail to hit 660K total in the US. Other US lifetime numbers include Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (820K) and New Super Mario Bros. U (830K).

The best selling home console was Xbox 360 at 107K units. It's big exclusive was the retail edition of Minecraft, which continues to hang around near the top like it lives there. Just below Minecraft is PS3's golden child, The Last of Us. Along with Animal Crossing, they represent the only platform-exclusive software in the top 10.

Who wants 3D printed Final Fantasy VII figures? ME!

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 10:00 PM PDT

Whoever invented 3D printing deserves to be showered in riches and sexual favors, because the process has yielded some unimaginable delights.

Last year, I shared a "Super Mario Mobius Strip" made by Joaquin Baldwin. I also made a passing mention of a polygonal Cloud Strife model that he was also selling at his Shapeways shop. Little did I know that he had plans to render nearly the entire main and supporting cast of Final Fantasy VII in little 3D printed sandstone figurines. Even Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie are here!

Joaquin was selling these figures for between $13 and $32 (depending on the size), but he seems to be sold out currently. Keep a close watch, because I'm sure such hot items will make a return some day.

And now, 50 SNES final bosses bite the big one

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 09:00 PM PDT

A few months ago, Cinemassacre and Angry Video Game Nerd collaborator Mike Matei uploaded a video quiz challenging viewers to guess the 50 NES games on display just from their final boss death animations. The bits have now doubled for this second quiz, which involves 50 titles from the SNES library.

I want to jump to #31 just for sec. It so obviously resembles Double Dragon, but it looks nothing like the two Double Dragon games that actually did release on the SNES (three if you include Battletoads & Double Dragon). This is really bugging me. Help, anyone?

The most forgiving of ruins - The Daily Spelunk

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 08:00 PM PDT

Today's Daily Challenge in Spelunky is one of the most generous, considerate arrangement of levels that I have ever seen in the game... with the possible exception of a nasty Black Market. Cash, prizes, it's all for the taking today and Jordan meets with some considerable success, including a truly heart-stopping conclusion. All this, plus we learn a little bit about a debutante with a penchant for purple prose in today's Daily Spelunk.

Shinobi clash! Ryu Hayabusa vs. Strider Hiryu

Videogame ninjas are seriously the worst ninjas of all time. It's kind of hard to keep hidden in the shadows when there is a trail of blood and limbs running right up to your present location. Still pretty badass, though.

Two weeks ago, ScrewAttack aired the latest episode of the DEATH BATTLE dream fight show. In one corner is Ryu Hayabusa from Tecmo's Ninja Gaiden series, and in the other is Strider Hiryu from Capcom's Strider series. Joe Musashi sadly could not attend. SEGA sits in the corner weeping tears of shame.

Persona 4 Arena follow-up starts location test in Japan

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 06:00 PM PDT

[Update: It's unclear as to whether this is a full blown sequel or just a big update, but the Japanese used to describe it is "zokuhen," a word reserved for sequels and continuations. As of this writing only two new characters have been revealed, but it's possible and highly likely that more will be added in the coming months. Menus have also undergone major changes, so I'm more inclined to call this an actual sequel.]

This came completely out of nowhere. In fact, it's so out of left field that the Japanese fighting game players on my Twitter timeline didn't actually believe the news. Persona 4: Arena is receiving an update/sequel, and its official location test begins today in Japan. This new version of the game adds Yukari and Junpei from Persona 3 as playable characters, and according to reports, characters' also have varying numbers of Persona cards.

I'm still struggling to wrap my head around the suddenness of this news, but I'm psyched as hell. Persona 4: Arena was my go to fighting game last year, and a sizable update means it'll stay relevant for a long time coming. I included some off-screen photos from the Famitsu article below for your viewing pleasure.

The Daily Hotness: Gone Home

So Gone Home is out today, and it's getting almost as much buzz on my Twitter feed as Papers, Please did last week. It's supposed to be a great example of storytelling in videogames, so I'm curious to see what makes it so special. Are any of you looking into this one?

On Destructoid, Conrad and Jordan continued their Daily Spelunk, Jayson brought another edition of Noteworthy, the crew discussed Call of Duty: Ghosts on Office Chat, Hamza previewed the new Call of Duty multiplayer, Chris reviewed Plants vs. Zombies 2, and so much more happened on this fine day.
