This Killer Instinct cover song is pretty killer

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 03:30 PM PDT

One of the reasons I love videogames is because of how passionate the entire community is. There's an insane amount of respect payed to retro games that paved the way for the modern era, and this soothing SNES Killer Instinct  music cover by On Being Human is no exception. If you're interested in hearing a piece of gaming history, you can either watch the video above, or download the track here.

Killer Instinct is one of my favorite fighting games of all time, and the first game I held tournaments for in my own home. While I had previously played fighting games with friends, Killer Instinct was one of my first true competitive experiences, so I really hope the new game delivers.

Ex-Monolith devs' Betrayer joins Steam Early Access

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 02:30 PM PDT

Betrayer caught our eye the other day. It's in development at Blackpowder Games, which is better known as the six-person team made up of former Monolith Productions devs. Perhaps just as importantly, it's the game with that striking art style and tale of a ghost-filled 17th century colony -- not your average title, in other words. Alasdair told you Betrayer would be hitting up Steam Early Access this month and that time has come.

The team is really hoping to leverage the platform in a meaningful way, from the sound of it. This build, described as being in alpha, contains an intro area and a single large region to explore, plus a range of weapons like bows, muskets, and even a throwing axe.

Blackpowder's primary goal is to get feedback on its storytelling: "Betrayer focuses on exploration and discovery with minimal explanation or guidance, so usability is a major concern. We want to make sure you have enough information to be able to find your way through the game and form theories about what might be happening, but we don’t want to over-explain or spell things out, so we hope to rely on community feedback to find a rewarding balance."

For $13.49, I don't know that I'd be willing to jump in straight away, but it's one to watch. "In the coming days and weeks, we will open up new areas to explore that feature new enemies, weapons, gameplay mechanics, characters, and mysteries," writes the studio. "Your feedback will help us to refine existing gameplay and prioritize upcoming features and fixes, so please let us know what you think on the forums!"

Attention, doom-murder heads: New Barkley 2 footage

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 01:30 PM PDT

It feels strange to say it, but it's true: Barkley 2 is one of my most anticipated games right now. Just re-reading this description from Tales of Games rekindles my excitement: "The year is 666X. A powerful youngster, wise beyond his years, awakens from a B-Ball induced coma aboard the mysterious dwarf space ziggurat Necron 7, held captive by the Malevolent A.I. Cuchulainn. With no memory of who he is or where he came from, he adopts the identity of X114JAM9 and sets off into the Post-Cyberpocalyptic Wasteland in search of the enigmatic Cyberdwarf, the only one who can reveal to him the terrible truth behind his forgotten past and make sense of his harrowing future."

But walls of summary text -- even those written in such a delightfully odd manner -- can only get you so far. Enter this fresh gameplay footage from a pre-alpha version of the Windows, Mac, and Linux game. Yep -- still super excited in just about every way. Barkley 2 will be at PAX Prime as part of the Indie Megabooth at booth #867, so go say "hi." (Or some inside joke that the developers are probably tired of hearing brought up.)

We can't wait to play with ourselves in Call of Duty

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 12:30 PM PDT

We have a new Office Chat for your consumption today, where I'm joined by Jordan Devore and Chris Carter to talk about the enormous changes on the way to multiplayer in Call of Duty: Ghosts, and I'm particularly taken with the features which will allow me to never have to humiliate myself in front of another human again. Plus, Saints Row IV is really, really good and we just wanted to make sure that was totally clear to everyone.

D&D, Kalypso, and ARMA are your daily deals

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 12:00 PM PDT

GOG.com is rolling out its weekend sale a little early, which is nice for the purposes of writing this post! This weekend GOG.com has got reductions on its great catalog of Dungeons and Dragons-based games. The more you buy, the bigger the discount all the way up to 75% off for the whole bundle. The jewels in the crown are surely Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate, and Icewind Dale

GamersGate has the ARMA franchise reduced in price -- including ARMA II (in case you want to get your DayZ on) -- for £12.48/$19.98. Also on offer is the steampunk shooter, Damnation which is just £1.75/$2.50. Steam has a big promotion on Kalypso titles including the Jagged Alliance and Tropico franchises, along with 50% off the recently released vampire stealth game Dark which is just £14.99/$19.99. Also reduced this weekend is the Red Faction franchise, including a big bundle that includes all the games for just £5.99/$11.99.

Hands-on with Call of Duty: Ghosts' multiplayer offerings

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 11:30 AM PDT

Call of Duty: Ghosts' multiplayer has finally been revealed, and it's the biggest overhaul Infinity Ward has done since the first Modern Warfare. What I got to play at the reveal event was pretty fun, but then again that's not shocking as I've always enjoyed playing the series' multiplayer.

And I think that's how things boil down here. If you've enjoyed Call of Duty's multiplayer in the past, then you'll like Ghosts' just the same. If you've never been into the series before, well, there's nothing too different here that will suddenly pull you into the experience.

That's not to say there aren't some cool new changes that refresh things just a little, but on the whole, there's nothing huge that will make you think twice about giving this one a go.

Arkane Studios' Prey 2 reboot confirmed via leaked e-mail

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 11:00 AM PDT

For months, rumors have been floating around the web regarding the status of Human Head's upcoming shooter, Prey 2. Despite a relatively strong showing at E3 2011, the title remained in development hell, plagued with delays and at times, even rumors of out-right cancellation. However, back in May, sources close to the project reported that Dishonored's Arkane Studios would be taking over development, and starting from scratch. Rather than confirm these reports, both Arkane and its parent company Bethesda were quick to deny such rumors.

Fast forward to earlier today, when Kotaku obtained several leaked e-mails between Arkane creative director Raphael Colantonio and his staff dating back to May, which appear to detail the team's involvement with the game. More importantly, the leak also highlights their proposed pitch -- a spiritual successor to System Shock.

How GTA Online will 'grow and evolve into its own thing'

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 10:30 AM PDT

Going in, I was skeptical that Rockstar really needed to so prominently tease the reveal of GTA Online, but it feels good to be, on some level, proven wrong; this isn't just more of the same. Speaking to CVG, Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies referred to it "as a different entity, a separate thing, and it'll grow on its own. It'll be GTA Online; it's not part of GTA V. Obviously it's set in the GTA V engine, but it's going to grow and evolve into its own thing."

The interview itself goes incredibly in-depth, and it's worth a read. The main takeaway is that as crazy as all of this sounds -- we're basically talking the full world of GTA V, but in a persistent online setting -- it's only the start. For instance, underwater areas: "We're not really pushing the underwater side right now, but once we get the first batch of content out -- which is going to be a lot; hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of missions -- then we'll start looking at some other things. Underwater. Getting all the subs going. They're all there, it's all ready to go. And underwater's kind of cool. I think we're going to find that a lot of people like underwater, so I think it's an area that we might utilise in future."

It's slightly disappointing that all of this won't be out in time for launch, but it's intentional -- Rockstar wants to ease players into GTA V. Getting into the content on or after October 1, 2013 when GTA Online goes live will be as simple as changing to a new, fourth (multiplayer) character on the Switch Wheel. "There may be a tiny download, but it'll just be a code," reassures Benzies. "We've just got to figure out how that will work with Sony and Microsoft."

This gameplay video shows what Dying Light's all about

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT

A 12-minute gameplay video of Techland's Dying Light has surfaced, and it seems like "Fight or Flight" may have also been an appropriate title for the game. The free-running mechanics are on full display, and it looks far more convenient to just flee from all those undead bastards instead of dealing with them.

Just make sure that you run to a safe corner to huddle up in by the time the sun goes down. You don't want any part of the graveyard crew in this game.

Arkane hints at what's next for Dishonored

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 09:30 AM PDT

Arkane Studios has -- for the time being, anyway -- wrapped up Dishonored, now that The Brigmore Witches DLC is out. The stealth-action title has done well enough to be considered a full franchise by publisher Bethesda and it seems one of the team's next projects will take place in that same universe, or at least be mechanically similar. Co-creative director Raphael Colantonio tells Rock, Paper, Shotgun that "Having success with [Dishonored] tells us we should keep all these values and do more of this kind of game."

The new title is "definitely going to be a similar type of game," he said. "Choices, multiple objectives, branching paths, and things like that. Those are our core values and they will stay that way." On the topic of a new console generation and what higher-end specs mean, "It's all about interactivity and choices, consequences to your choices, many ways to do things, exploration, verticality, and all kinds of player tools. The more kinds of tools we can give to the player in a very simulated environment, the better the experience is."

Multiplayer was absent in Dishonored, but that's not necessarily going to be the case going forward. "We might be interested by multiplayer," remarked Colantonio. "And this would not necessarily be the traditional multiplayer approach. But primarily, we are storytellers. That's the part we like. So as long as multiplayer does not go against that ..." For now, the team is "keeping an eye out for ways to do multiplayer the right way."

As where the series' narrative might go, "The lore [of Dishonored] is actually way bigger than the game itself. There are a few places we could go and explore given the opportunity. Definitely the islands around, but also all the big continents. Anything is possible."

Vlambeer's 'roguelike-like' Wasteland Kings revealed

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Super Crate Box, LUFTRAUSERS, and Ridiculous Fishing developer Vlambeer's next game Wasteland Kings is another minimal, arcade-style project, one that builds on its prior titles and "feels like Vlambeer." If you've tried any of them before, you know what they mean -- different gameplay concepts all guided by the same design principles.

Initially a Mojam 2013 prototype, Wasteland Kings is a "roguelike-like" which in this case means blowing up monsters in randomly-generated worlds with an emphasis placed on mutant abilities and weapon pick-ups. Development is going to be streamed live through the official site as well as via Vlambeer's Twitch channel. Also keep an eye out for the game on Steam Early Access in the coming weeks, and at the PAX Prime Indie Megabooth.

"We always said that being open is the best way to exist as an indie developer, and we felt like taking that to the extreme," said Rami Ismail. "It also just sounds like a really fun experiment."

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition returns to iOS

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 08:00 AM PDT

For all of you out there who have been waiting for something to give on the unfortunate Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition contractual situation, I have good news -- it's all been resolved. It's been two months since the removal of the game by request of Atari, but all is well, and the game is now available again on the App Store, and on Beamdog's site.

The occasionally messy licensing issue is an unfortunate side effect of digital-only media, but I'm just glad the game is back up, as it's a really solid re-imagining of one of the most classic RPGs of all time.

Forza 5 limited edition and day-one editions detailed

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 07:30 AM PDT

Are you still into buying special editions? I really, truly was, for a while there. Haven't bought one in years -- and it feels great! With Forza Motorsport 5, there are two options: a limited edition ($79.99), and a day-one edition ($59.99). At least here, your money is largely going to in-game content and not random swag that will occupy shelf space you're increasingly running out of.

In terms of cars, the limited edition includes access to the 2011 Audi RS 3 Sportback, 2012 Aston Martin Vanquish, 2013 Ford M Shelby Mustang GT500, 2013 McLaren P1, and 2013 SRT Viper GTS. There's also VIP membership access, with a 2x player reward boost, exclusive multiplayer events, 1,250 in-game car tokens, and other digital goodies. Plus, even more cars: the 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C, 1987 RUF CTR Yellowbird, 1991 Mazda #55 787B, 2011 Ford F150 SVT Raptor, and 2011 Bugatti Veyron Super Sport.

As for the day-one edition, which is a free upgrade for everyone who buys Forza 5 at launch, you're getting three more vehicles: the 2010 Audi TT RS Coupe, 2013 Ford Focus ST, and 2011 Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera. These cars are also included in the limited edition of the game, as you probably guessed.

Nobuo Uematsu's return to form with Blik-0 soundtrack

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 07:00 AM PDT

Last month's Note Worthy featured some of the best music I've heard this year. It's interesting then, that this month, we have a lot of shorter releases, including several free-to-download albums, which is good if you broke the bank buying everything last month.

Top honors to go Nobuo Uematsu's first e-book and accompanying soundtrack, Blik-0, although we also touch on the surprising Rockman Xover, the atmospheric Remember Me, and the nostalgic Halo: Spartan Assault and Shadowrun Returns, among others.

We have a lot of samples from the Destructoid SoundCloud this month, so dig in, enjoy, and let us know which ones are your favorites.

Console MOBA Guardians of Middle-earth coming to PC

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 06:30 AM PDT

Monolith took a crack at making a multiplayer online battle arena experience for consoles with Guardians of Middle-earth. It was an admirable attempt -- and I enjoyed the game quite a lot for what it was, which was a trimmed-down take on the genre -- but it simply didn't attract enough players. Waiting in lobbies for ten-plus minutes gets old real fast. And while Guardians wasn't half bad, it certainly wasn't worth constantly waiting around for.

Now, the inevitable is happening: this console-centric MOBA is headed to PC on August 29 by way of Zombie Studios. There are different tiers being offered, but the base game is $14.99 and includes Gandalf, Galadriel, Thráin, Gollum, Hildifons, and Legolas. For the record, there's 36 guardians in total, so it's not the most generous of offers.

What does come as a nice surprise, however, is that players who bought the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 version of Guardians before August 15, 2013 will get the base game for free on PC via download code. I'm hopeful this release can catch on to the point where there's at least a stable community, even if it doesn't become massively successful like its contemporaries.

Charles Dance to voice pivotal character in Witcher 3

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 06:00 AM PDT

Are you excited for The Witcher 3? Well you aren't alone, as most of the internet is as well, and now you have yet another reason to be excited. Actor Charles Dance, most recently seen as Tywin Lannister in HBO's rendition of Game of Thrones (and the amazingly cheesy villain in Last Action Hero), will be voicing a "major" character in The Witcher 3.

It appears as if Dance will voice the "mighty Nilfgaardian Emperor Emhyr var Emreis," which sounds pretty fitting for the formidable actor. The Witcher 3 really does sound better with every new development.

Uber is trying its hand at tower defense with Toy Rush

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 05:30 AM PDT

The next game from the makers of Monday Night Combat and the upcoming Planetary Annihilation is going in an altogether different direction. Toy Rush is a card-centric tower defense title built for mobile devices. If, like me, this is one of the first things you're seeing to kick your day off proper, be prepared for an overwhelming amount of cute.

The one thing that does jump out at me here -- besides who's developing the game, of course -- is the ol' asynchronous multiplayer hook. In Toy Rush, players have their own individual base and can go on the offensive to steal resources from others as well as take a more defensive position. I'm also admittedly a sucker for the premise of toys mucking about.

Look for this among the 80+ games featured in the Indie Megabooth at PAX Prime. Jeez!

This Wonderful 101 EU launch trailer is, well, wonderful

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 05:00 AM PDT

Europeans have been getting a fair bit of Nintendo platform based games early, most recently with Pikmin 3 and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. There's at least one more early bird launch as well, as Wonderful 101 is launching on August 23rd for all you EU peeps.

I had a chance to play the demo last week, and I found it to be a bit simplistic. I didn't have much trouble getting Pure Platinum medals, and strategically, I didn't find it all that deep, despite the fact that it was still fun. All of that could change with the full release of course (and with higher difficulties), and based on this trailer, it looks like the game really ramps up after the first set of levels.

PAX Prime's Indie MEGABOOTH will have more than 80 games

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 04:30 AM PDT

The Indie MEGABOOTH just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Topping PAX Prime 2012's 30 games and PAX East 2013's 62 games, the booth at PAX Prime 2013 will feature at least 84 different titles from more than 60 studios and will be the largest single booth at the show.

Even with four days to play this year, it seems unlikely that anybody but the most devoted indie fan will get to experience all of the games at the booth. I'm trying to decide if I can keep up a schedule of playing at least 21 of the games each day for a sufficient amount of time, while also making room in my schedule to pester Vlambeer about bringing Ridiculous Fishing to Android.

Some of the notable games that will be present are shown in the trailer above, and the full list is up at Indie MEGABOOTH's official website.

Take a look at the party system in Final Fantasy XIV: ARR

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 04:00 AM PDT

Final Fantasy XIV is nearly here, and yet another developer commentary video has hit the net. If you're curious as to how the game works, this is probably the most informative video yet, as the developers go over pretty much every party role possible. If developer videos aren't your thing, you can find the Japanese commercial for the game below.

Patrick and I have been playing the beta for some time now, and we'll be knee-deep into the full retail release later this month. Stay tuned for a ton of Realm Reborn coverage going forward, all the way into the PlayStation 4 release and beyond!

Yakuza 1 & 2 HD sells very poorly in its first week

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 03:30 AM PDT

The Wii U port sales woes continue with Yakuza 1 & 2 HD, as the game reportedly shipped less than 2000 copies in its first week in Japan. Yakuza producer Toshihiro Nagoshi stated in the past that the release is an "experiment," so it sounds like they fully expected this turnout. It's a shame since it probably eliminates any chance of an international release, but at least try tried!

I'm starting to think more publishers would benefit from releasing HD remakes worldwide on the same day, solely on the eShop, sold at a discounted rate of $20 to $30.

The European version will also ship with an artbook for select pre-order locations.

All you have left to do is wait! In the meantime, you can check out our full review, the tips guide, and our preview, where I answer nearly a hundred questions about the game in the comments section.

If you're looking for discounts, Trine 2: Director's Cut is on sale for $7.99 until September 5th, and Runner 2 is discounted to $11.25 until August 29th.

In the 3DS realm, Heavy Fire: Black Arms 3D, 10-in-1: Arcade Collection, Barbie Groom and Glam Pups (yes!), and My Western Horse 3D are up on the eShop later today. Donkey Kong is also hitting the Virtual Console.

PlayStation Vita finally gets its killer app -- Pets

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 02:05 AM PDT

For all of you out there who have been waiting for something other than ports to hit the PlayStation Vita, your wait is finally over. The killer app from Sony has arrived, and it goes by the name of -- PlayStation Vita Pets.

Yep, that's right, Pets is described as "no ordinary pet game," since the focus is put on adventure, as you pick from a litter of four puppies each with their "own personality." So what they're saying is, it's that a cute RPG (CRPG)? Where's Dale North when you need him?!

On one hand, this seems to be a blatant way for Sony to get in on the Kinectimals and Nintendogs craze. On the other...HIPPO DOG. My god, the game has a hippo dog.

This is the Grand Theft Auto V online reveal

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 02:00 AM PDT

In this debut look at GTA Online, we're shown the new-found sense of freedom that players will have online. This multiplayer component is described as a "dynamic and persistent online world for 16 players that begins by sharing gameplay features, geography and mechanics with Grand Theft Auto V, but will continue to expand and evolve after its launch."

Form a crew to rob a bank or do the standard online multiplayer deathmatches, should that appeal to you. Customize your appearance, weapons, or vehicles. Buy an apartment. Design races with a content creator. Interact with and get new missions from non-playable characters. It's all sounding like an ambitious step up for Rockstar.

Curiously, GTA Online isn't coming out until October 1, 2013 -- a couple of weeks after Grand Theft Auto V's September 17 launch. So even though this isn't being treated as "GTA V multiplayer" so much as it is its own entity, it's worth pointing out that the mode will be free for everyone who owns a copy of the core game.

Tropico 5 is aiming for world domination in 2014

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 01:45 AM PDT

Kalypso Media has just announced the existence of Tropico 5, a follow-up to the insanely successful simulation series. Penultimo the Presidente will return, as he embarks upon yet another authoritarian term on the island of Tropico. The setup in Tropico 5 involves taking over during the island over the course of centuries, balancing wars against opposing governments, factions, and even your own family.

Various historical events will test you throughout time, such as both World War 1 and 2, and the Cold War. Right now, the game is planned for the Linux, Mac, PC, and Xbox 360 platforms. I'm a big fan of a few of the Tropico games, so this sounds pretty interesting -- we don't get enough simulation these days!

Review: Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 01:00 AM PDT

Plants vs. Zombies launched in 2009 on the PC and absolutely changed the face of tower defense games. It was a cultural phenomenon, inspiring even the most infrequent of gamers to play for hours on end, popping off one zombie's head after another with reckless abandon.

But the original game was also a premium purchase, and with $20, you got every bit of content right away. The sequel, Plants vs. Zombies 2, offers up a very different approach -- it's free-to-play only, and, at first, it's launching exclusively on iOS devices.

Everything about this approach has disaster written all over it, but somehow, Plants vs. Zombies 2 actually pulls through mostly unscathed.

Castlevania: Mirror of Fate HD rumors surface again

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 12:00 AM PDT

If you've been itching to get into the Lords of Shadow sub-franchise but haven't done so yet, you may get a chance to try everything at once if this PS3 and Xbox 360 listing is to be believed. Apparently, All Games Beta has uncovered a listing over at Play-Asia.com, which includes the original Lords of Shadow, its two DLC packs, a Lords of Shadow 2 demo, and the most surprising inclusion of all -- an HD version of the 3DS exclusive Mirror of Fate.

Provided that you've been following the development of the Lords of Shadow games, this should come as no surprise -- an HD version of Mirror of Fate has actually been discussed in the open already. Although Tony didn't much care for Mirror of Fate, I actually found it to be a decent, yet flawed 2D re-imagining of God of War -- provided this HD re-release is real, and fairly priced, it could be a great way to experience it on the cheap.
