Super Smash Bros.' Pilotwings stage up close

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 04:00 PM PDT

The first screenshot of the Pilotwings stage in Super Smash Bros. was so zoomed out that I wasn't even sure it was a stage. This new image from director Masahiro Sakurai, on the other hand, is much easier to make out. At the very least, we'll get to duke it out on an plane. Neat.

That also looks like Wuhu Island from Wii Sports Resort in the background. Double neat. Now all I need is for this to somehow connect to Yoshi's island, and I'm set.

Capcom Essentials bundles five games in one for $59.99

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 03:00 PM PDT

With the new consoles in spitting distance, Capcom is releasing some of its works of this generation in the Capcom Essentials. For $59.99, this compilation packages in Resident Evil 6, Super Street Fighter IV, Dead Rising 2, Devil May Cry 4, a download code for Mega Man 10, and a Capcom-branded traveling bag.

So not the worst deal around, but there are some glaring oddities. For starters, it's sort of stands out that the package has Super Street Fighter IV rather than Arcade Edition, and Devil May Cry 4 rather than D.M.C. Still, Dead Rising 2 and Mega Man 10 are nice. As for Resident Evil 6, what more can be said about it.

Capcom Essentials releases in stores on October 8, 2013.

Counter-Strike: GO gets new weapons, skins, and CRATES

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 02:00 PM PDT

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has just received a huge update which includes two new weapons, a lot of new weapon skins, and even crates and keys. The crates contain only skins, some of which will track the amount of kills scored with that weapon right on the skin itself. The new weapons are a silenced M4A1 and a silenced USP. Most CS fans will recognize these weapons from past games, and due to fan feedback, they're back! And no, you don't have to buy keys to get them, they're just in the game now.

One of the new keys is the "eSports key," combining my two favorite things: competitive gaming and in-game economies. A portion of all sales from the eSports key will "be redirected to fund prize purses at upcoming CS:GO eSport events worldwide." I'm really glad to see Valve supporting the eSports scene by allowing fans to directly contribute to it. Also, I'm really glad they spelled it "eSports" and not any other variation.

What I'd really like to see is for CS:GO to get a spectator system similar to that found in Dota 2 to go along with the new menu system. Being able to jump in and spectate professional and non-professional players alike would go a long way to help boost the competitive scene for the game.

You can check out all the new goodness on the official update page.

A new football season means a Football Manager 2014

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 01:00 PM PDT

It comes out every year, looks almost identical to the previous year's iteration and non-players will wonder why people get excited. I am, of course, talking about the new Football Manager game, imaginatively titled Football Manager 2014. SEGA has been good custodians of Sports Interactive's long-running management sim, so let's peer inside the virtual dressing room and take a peak at what's in store for the new season.

The 3D match engine is getting an overhaul, which I'm sure will be nice, but we all know it's under the hood where the crux of the game is. With that in mind, Sports Interactive is promising a rework of the tactical engine, along with more realistic contract negotiations, interactions with your club's board and realistic transfer transfers. So you too can have a player that clearly doesn't want to play for your club but you don't want to let him leave (inset your Rooney, Suarez, Bale joke here).

What's really piqued my interest is the integration of Steam Workshop support. Having only just learned of the existence of custom leagues and scenarios created by the community, it seems like a stream of user mods on Steam Workshop would extend the game's life considerably. Until Football Manager 2015 comes out, anyway. If you pre-purchase on Steam now, you'll get access to a beta that will release two weeks before the full game launches; all your saves will carry over which is always nice with this sort of thing.

Game Music Bundle 5 features Monaco, Fez, FTL, and more

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 12:30 PM PDT

Gone are the days when owning your favorite game music required spending exorbitant amounts of money on a Japanese import. I say good riddance (though I still cherish my old Final Fantasy Tactics soundtrack CD). These days, some of the best game music is being produced by independent artists who make their work available for a fraction of what we used to pay.

This most recent Game Music Bundle takes that to an extreme. For just one measly dollar (or more if you are feeling generous), you can have digital copies of the soundtracks for Fez, FTL: Faster Than Light, Gunpoint, Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded, Monaco: What's Yours is Mine, and World of Goo. Chip in ten dollar or more and the bundle size triples to include soundtracks like Frog Fractions, Little Inferno, and more.

While I already have several of these, this bundle still seems too good to pass up. Some day, I will be able to resist things like this. Today is not that day.

Flashback HD remake gets a new story trailer

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 12:15 PM PDT

Ubisoft has released a brand new trailer focusing on the story for VectorCell's upcoming 2.5D remake, Flashback HD. Like many fans, I remain on the fence regarding the new direction they've decided to take with this time-honored classic. The original Flashback remains one of my favorite side-scrolling action adventure titles of the mid-90s, and while it's deserving of the attention, it certainly wouldn't be the first time I've been disappointed by someone's attempt to update a game I hold so dear.

Fortunately, as we mentioned back in July, the upcoming release will also include the original game, ensuring that fans of the original will have something to cling to, while giving newcomers an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the classic. Not too shabby, right? Flashback HD launches on Xbox Live Arcade August 21st, with both PlayStation Network and PC to follow at a later date.

Microsoft hires former Steam boss for Windows gaming

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 12:00 PM PDT

Microsoft has snatched up former Valve employee Jason Holtman to work on "making Windows a great platform for gaming and interactive entertainment," reports GamesIndustry International. While at Valve, he was involved with developer relations, working to bring big-name publishers to the company's now hugely successful Steam.

Holtman was at Valve for eight years before leaving around the same time as when those notable firings went down early this year. Many of us feel like Microsoft has dropped the ball in its approach to PC gaming these past few years -- the words "Games for Windows Live" strike fear into our hearts -- which makes this a smart hire. There's certainly room for improvement.

"I think there is a lot of opportunity for Microsoft to deliver the games and entertainment customers want and to work with developers to make that happen, so I'm excited to be here," Holtman said.

Runner 2 'Good Friends Pack' hits 360 and Wii U this week

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 11:30 AM PDT

Although the Good Friends Character Pack for Runner 2 has hit the PS3 and PC platforms, it's been absent from the Wii U and Xbox 360 versions of the game -- until this week, that is. Straight from the developer, the 360 will be getting the $3 DLC today, and the Wii U will nab it tomorrow. Runner 2 is one of my favorite games of the year so far, so I'm glad it's seeing a fair bit of success.

In other Bit.Trip news, Bit.Trip.Fate is 50% on Steam, and Runner 2 is currently free for PlayStation Plus subscribers.

Spelunky Mega Guide: Everything you need to know (part 2)

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 11:00 AM PDT

[Here's Part 2 of Dtoid community blogger Corduroy Turtle's Spelunky Mega Guide. Click here for Part 1! --Mr Andy Dixon]

Spelunky is an absolutely fantastic game, but it's not particularly friendly to newcomers. I won't name names but I have people on my friends list who've never made it out of the Mines. That makes me sad. In an effort to help along new players (and because I'm hopelessly addicted) I decided to share some of the knowledge I've acquired after dying somewhere in the neighborhood of 2,500 times. Why so many deaths? Because my hunger for this game would not cease until I had seen everything this game had to offer, and that included earning every Achievement. Turns out, this thing is so freaking good, I'm still playing it.

Before you start reading, I'd like to emphasize that, beyond the high scores and loot, Spelunky is a game about discovery and challenging yourself. It can be brutal at times (read: always), but you'll come to find that it's also extremely fair and immensely satisfying, if you're willing to put in the effort. There are so many secrets, hidden areas and advanced techniques built into this game, it's absolutely staggering. If the Internet didn't exist, some of this stuff would only be spoken of in hushed whispers behind locked doors.

Though I purposefully left certain pieces of information out of this guide to keep some of the mysteries alive, I still pull the curtain way back. Stuff is explained in great detail, and therefore spoiled. If you haven't played much Spelunky or don't know much about it, I encourage you not to read this from top to bottom. I can tell you first hand, discovering this stuff for yourself is magical, and far more exciting than simply reading my descriptions. That being said, buckle up. This thing is huge.

Review: Attack of the Friday Monsters! A Tokyo Tale

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT

Children see the world from a lower vantage point than adults. They're closer to the smaller things, the things they're more able to control. They're also more able to stand back and see the bigger picture in ways that adults may be too preoccupied to notice. The catch is, they may not have the life experience needed to put that picture in proper perspective.

What may feel like a tiny inconvenience to an adult may be a huge problem to a child. If Mom and Dad have a argument about laundry, the child may feel like they are witnessing a battle between giants. Likewise, larger problems like World Wars, the destruction of the environment, or a floundering economy may not feel that big to a kid if they're kept far enough away from their day-to-day experience. How big something feels compared with how big it actually is can be tough for the child to determine.

This space where children exist allows for concrete reality and unintentional fantasy to co-mingle without hesitation, allowing for the unfathomable to become everyday routine. Not coincidentally, videogames exist in a similar space, which is why some say that they are as close as we can currently get to entering each other's dreams.

These ideas are what make Attack of the Friday Monsters! A Tokyo Tale an emotionally and intellectually engaging, mostly-adorable narrative vacation game.

Now it's EA's turn to have a Humble Bundle

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 09:30 AM PDT

Over the last few months, we've seen more and more major publishers sell their games via the always popular Humble Bundle. Now it's the turn of maybe the biggest dog in the pound, EA, to get involved. The new Humble Origin Bundle includes games plus some selected extras. Interestingly enough, there are Steam codes available for some of the titles.

The selection includes Medal of Honor, Mirror's Edge, Dead Space, Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box, and Crysis 2 Maximum Edition. Dead Space 3 is only on Origin and is the other game that is included in the "pay what you want section" of the bundle. Pay over $4.74 and you'll also get Origin codes for The Sims 3 and Battlefield 3 along with the both of their soundtracks.

Speaking logically and rationally, this is a great value bundle; those are eight good games for less than $5, which is a steal. However, I'm not unaware of the general distaste people have for EA and Origin, justly and unjustly. The Humble Bundle has been used to promote deserving indie titles in the past and that was part of its appeal, not to help major publishers sell games; they didn't need the help, quite frankly. Still, if you have mixed feelings, buy the bundle and have all the money going to charity and the Humble Bundle team. It's up to you.

Hawken's next big update is all thanks to fan feedback

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Hawken has been in open beta for the last several months, but all in all things have been pretty quiet from the giant mech combat simulator. Well that's about to change as developer Adhesive Games unleashes a massive update that's going to improve a bunch of features.

"We've been focusing a lot on feedback from the public," producer Jason Hughes told me during hands-on demo. "We haven't had an update in a while because we actually had to break a lot of stuff in order to move on to some of the changes we wanted to make. At some point we couldn't keep updating what was live because we had to throw a lot of stuff out and sort of start from scratch."

So the team been taking in all this feedback, tweaking and tuning all sorts of features, and the result of their effort will be upon us later this month. Here's what you can expect.

Call of Duty: Ghosts won't have in-game streaming feature

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 08:50 AM PDT

Infinity Ward revealed the first real details on Call of Duty: Ghosts multiplayer today and there's a lot to take in. One thing they glossed over during the presentation was their eSports plans, so I talked to Daniel Suarez, vice president of production at Activision here at the multiplayer reveal to try and get more details.

"We're continuing the work that [Treyarch] did, eSports is a big initiative for us," Daniel told me at the Call of Duty: Ghosts multiplayer reveal. He added that they're going to continue supporting the community as much as they can with these features. That said, there is one big feature that won't be included in Ghosts

"So not all the feature sets that we had in Black Ops II will transfer over. So for example the streaming from the game feature we won't actually be doing this year. The way that it worked in Black Ops II is you had a certain resolution that you could output out. We didn't really see the community adopting that so we've taken that feature out in Ghosts." To that end, Theater Mode will also not be returning for Ghosts.

For those planning on picking up the current-gen version, you'll have to have an external streaming device like an Elgato to stream your games like you used to before Black Ops II. As for the next-gen versions though, one can assume you'll have the out-of-the-box streaming features thanks to the Twitch.TV partnership with Xbox One, and the Ustream partnership on the PlayStation 4.

Infinity Ward will be sharing more details on the eSports features as we get closer to launch, and hopefully they'll continue the overall momentum Treyarch pulled off with Black Ops II

Season passes will transfer between Xbox 360 and Xbox One

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 08:35 AM PDT

Anyone that's skeptical of purchasing downloadable content around the time that new consoles are set to launch can rest a bit easier. Microsoft has revealed the Season Pass Guarantee program which will essentially assure that consumers have an alternative to re-buying all the DLC they've already purchased.

The program states that if you buy a season pass for a participating Xbox 360 title, you'll automatically be granted access to download the same season pass for Xbox One. This doesn't seem like it'll necessarily hold true for all Xbox 360 games, but Microsoft has stated that EA, Ubisoft, and Activision are all already on-board with the offer. Call of Duty: Ghosts and Battlefield 4 have been confirmed to be participating titles.

The big caveat here is that this guarantee only applies to season passes. If you're the type that prefers to purchase DLC à la carte, you'll find yourself restricted to one system. However, if you're willing to take the plunge on a season pass and buy the game on both consoles, this is a most-welcomed silver lining.

Let's Wok! Chaos Code coming to PlayStation 3

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 08:30 AM PDT

teaser site and PlayStation Network page have surfaced confirming that the 2D fighting game Chaos Code is making the trip to the North American PSN store sometime in the foreseeable future. According to a tweet from the game’s community manager, Chaos Code was originally planned for a July release, but was held back due to technical issues.

Developed by Taiwanese studio FK Digital, and published by Arc System Works (makers of the Guilty Gear series), Chaos Code first hit the arcade scene in August of 2011. This past April, it was subsequently published in Asian territories for the PlayStation 3 via PSN.

The game features an off-the-wall ensemble of 14 fighters that include a gothic lolita type, an Ice Climbers-esque duo named Cait and Sith (hello Square Enix), and a grappling chef with perhaps the greatest name of all-time: Bravo Peperoncine. Oh, and he beats his opponents down with sausage link nunchucks and a giant wok!

Additionally, Chaos Code will not support network play when it launches. The game's community manager did confirm via Twittter that developer FK Digital is currently working on its own netcode to patch in at a later date, but is also interested in potentially using the GGPO middleware that powers online play for titles like Skullgirls and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition.

Early thoughts on the ukiyo-e fighting game Edo Superstar

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Last week, I guided your gaze towards a Kickstarter for Edo Superstar, a mobile fighter with a Japanese woodblock carving aesthetic. It is the brainchild of Jed Henry, who hopes to translate his Ukiyo-e Heroes style into an actual videogame.

Jed was cool enough to hook me up with a super early beta of Edo Superstar -- and I'm talking super early. As in, there's only one fight, all audio is absent, and most of the abilities have yet to be implemented. It nonetheless offers a clear direction for where the game is heading, so I thought I'd offer some preliminary praises and criticisms.

In this demo of the iPhone / iPod Touch version, you control Masaru the monkey as he squares off against an armored wolf wielding a naginata. Unlike other mobile fighters, there are no virtual buttons. Instead, you'll use a combination of taps and swipes. On Masaru's half of the screen, swipe forward or back to move in that direction, swipe up or down to jump or crouch, swipe forward or back while crouching to roll, or hold a tap to block. On the enemy's half of the screen, tap high, middle, or low to launch a strike towards that region of his body.

Review: Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 07:00 AM PDT

It took me quite a few years to get on the Ultima train. The series started in 1981, but it wasn't until the mid-'90s until I would discover Ultima Online -- the catalyst that allowed me to really embrace the franchise. But my enthusiasm would be short lived, as the departure of series creator and legendary game developer Richard Garriott would ensure a downward spiral for the once-great series for years to come.

Now in 2013, EA is at it again, attempting to strike gold with Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar -- with a heavy emphasis on free-to-play mechanics, and in-app-purchases. It's a shame though, as Ultima Forever is actually a pretty damn solid mobile RPG.

Disney Infinity: Action! is an AR toy for mobile devices

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 06:30 AM PDT

During a recent press event with Disney Interactive, I got a chance to look at how Disney Infinity will translate to mobile devices. The publisher is planning to release two separate apps, one for iOS devices and later for Android and Windows devices, and one exclusively for the iPad, from second generation or later.

Tomorrow, the Disney Infinity: Action! app will be available for iPhones and iPads. Within the month it will also be available on Android and Windows devices. This app is basically an alternate-reality camera toy that allows you to interact with three Disney characters from Disney Infinity.

Mr. Incredible, Sulley from Monsters Inc., and (animated) Jack Sparrow are the featured characters in this particular app. The main meat of Disney Infinity: Action! involves taking video captures that play back real footage while the characters perform various actions. Though the characters themselves are free to interact with and have their own sets of props to play with, each 'video action' costs a certain number of coins that can be won with daily check-ins and Facebook posts, or bought with in-app purchases.

You're given at least one video action per character for free, though if you want the really fun ones -- such as the actions that involve all three characters in some way -- you have to use your coins. The app reminded me of "Action Movie" on iOS devices, in how it blends real iPad/iPhone video footage with CGI effects in small film clips.

Fortunately, this app is not the only connectivity plan for mobile devices and Disney Infinity. Think of it more as a fun little distraction with IAP before Disney Interactive reveals the real iOS (think iPad) app for the game.

CoD: Ghosts sees biggest multiplayer overhaul since MW1

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 06:23 AM PDT

During today's reveal event for Call of Duty: Ghosts, a video montage showed what's new in multiplayer -- and new stuff there is. "We went through every single system in the game," said executive producer Mark Rubin, which resulted in this being "the biggest overhaul of multiplayer since the original Modern Warfare." Here are some of the highlights:

  • Character customization is in, including playable female soldiers. There are some 20,000 possible combinations which are both cosmetic in nature and affect gameplay.
  • Maps have dynamic events and environmental destruction.
  • There are seven new game modes, thirty new weapons, the new Marksman Rifle class, 20 new killstreaks, and a new co-op mode.
  • The create-a-soldier system is similar to Treyarch's Pick Ten. You'll have a budget to spend, and perks have varying number values associated with them.
  • You can create a squad of up to ten soldiers, each with a unique loadout, appearance, and ability to prestige.
  • New animations and movement systems: there's contextual leaning, a mantling system that let's you jump over obstacles, and a knee slide to go from sprinting to crouch or prone.
  • Modes: Cranked, where a kill makes you faster but also starts a 30-second timer in which you must earn another kill; Search and Rescue, where your team can revive you by picking up your tag or enemies can deny the revive by doing the same; and Squads, in which your custom squad competes against AI or other players.
  • Infinity Ward has plans for eSports following Treyarch's work on Black Ops II but only mentioned the CoD Championship and Ghosts' inclusion in the 2014 MLG Pro Circuit.
  • The studio is reducing the number of air-based killstreaks; for instance, the UAV is now a ground-based device instead of a drone in the air. No more death streaks, either.
  • The Season Pass is back with another four map packs and the Team Leader digital pack, including an exclusive multiplayer character. You can transfer your stats, prestige level, and profile across console generations, and DLC from the pass carries over too.

Talk about an information overload. Hamza is in town for the event, so expect to hear more from him about Ghosts' multiplayer, including hands-on, this week.

Microsoft adjusts Xbox One launch markets from 21 to 13

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 06:04 AM PDT

Microsoft announced at this year's E3 that Xbox One would launch simultaneously in 21 markets around the world. Today, it's backing off from that promise by quite a bit. Instead of the scheduled 21 countries, it will initially release in 13 countries.

The markets that are getting the short-end of the stick are Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden, and Switzerland. Microsoft has cited localization issues such as language and voice support, and partnerships as the reason for the delay. These countries are now scheduled to receive Xbox One "as soon as possible" in 2014.

For everyone that pre-ordered Xbox One in the countries affected by this news, Microsoft is throwing in a pack-in game with the console. Microsoft still intends to launch Xbox One in November 2013 in Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and United States.

Capcom is taking the Ultra SF IV PC version seriously

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 05:30 AM PDT

Capcom has been particularly open about the development of Ultra Street Fighter IV, which is pretty refreshing, given that it feels like they're trying harder to listen to their fans this time around. One of those areas is stepping up PC support, and recently, Capcom’s Neidel Crisan confirmed that they're attempting to launch Ultra Street Fighter IV "around the same time" as the console versions, rather than delay the PC version for a few months.

Here's the kicker though -- it's confirmed that they'll be making the switch from Games For Windows Live to Steam. Yes! All of this is great news so far, and all that's left is for Capcom to follow through.

Here's our first look at Call of Duty: Ghosts multiplayer

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 05:15 AM PDT

In today's multiplayer reveal event for Call of Duty: Ghosts, I'm hoping we'll hear more about the dog companion from the single-player campaign. (We so won't.) Instead, there will surely be talk of the new dynamic map conditions, a fresh set of perks, and everything else you'd expect. Either way, it's not long, now -- the stream kicks off at 10:30am Pacific.

A small part of me is hopeful that Infinity Ward will use the leap to new consoles as an excuse to change up the formula, but that's asking for a lot when so many players have grown accustomed to way Call of Duty feels and are somehow not at all tired of it. Such stamina these folks have. If you're unwilling or unable to watch this event unfold live, just check back on the front page for breakout posts over the next couple days.

Telltale's The Wolf Among Us has a green, flying monkey

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 05:00 AM PDT

Telltale's coolly named follow-up to the critically acclaimed The Walking Dead riffs off of an established property once more. The Wolf Among Us is a prequel to popular Vertigo comic Fables, which I know by name, but haven't read. That being said, with the initial screens and now this trailer, I'm already awaiting this one with bells on my toes.

Also, for as pretty as the art style is, what with its cool purples and such, let's not forget to credit whoever made that title font at the trailer's end. So slick.

Early grumblings suggest Telltale is sticking with a focus on making choices, but there's also more divergence being added with some sort of time keeping that could yield players different scenes depending on when they do things relative to the narrative. Could be cool.

Telltale has built up a bunch of goodwill with the strong The Walking Dead. Now we wait to see if it can do it even better with The Wolf Among Us' first episode, Faith. I'm already down for the slightly more stylized design and weird setting. Also the green monkey gargoyle thing.

Dark Souls II gets a live-action teaser trailer

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 04:30 AM PDT

Namco Bandai has fashioned a new live-action trailer for Dark Souls II that basically functions as a teaser for the game. The theme is the "forging" of a new hero, quite literally through the fashioning of armor and weapons in the point of view of a blacksmith.

It doesn't get a whole lot more exciting than that, but as time passes we're inching closer and closer to Dark Souls II's launch date. I'm a massive fan of both Demon's and Dark Souls, so March 14, 2014 can't come soon enough.

Icarus Proudbottom Teaches Typing is mental; play it

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 04:00 AM PDT

"You can't just type ANYTHING, you know."

Icarus Proudbottom Teaches Typing is a typing game. Kind of. You will type. Feverishly, fiendishly, and a bit fetishisticly. For reasons. And an owl will feed you false facts while an executive will ask you to sign your rights away and you will because it will be fun.

"'Where there is typing, there is life' - Mahatma Gandhi"

There is an unused progression system at the start wherein you can sap all your points from "strength," "optimism," and "hygiene" and put them towards "animal spirit" and "overall mojo." There's also a Typogatchi egg you feed your typing points to for sustenance. Sometimes you have to type all the letters in a word twice.

Just play it. You can play it right here. It takes under 20 minutes. It's manic and hilarious and surprisingly taut. The end is fantastic.

Awesomenauts is coming to the PlayStation 4

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 03:52 AM PDT

When the PS4 drops eventually, you'll have one more game to play on it -- Awesomenauts. Ronimo Games has just announced that Abstraction Games is handling the new version, as they are sticking to publishing duties. Another announcement is "possibly" coming next week.

If you're still salty from the lack of updates on the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions don't worry -- Ronimo says that all of the PC content will be included so far in the PS4 game, including the ability to purchase skins. Ronimo has also stated that they intend to keep this version consistently updated if this version is successful enough.

While I can't say I'm super excited to play the game on the PS4 in particular, this is great news, because it at the very least confirms the continued support for Awesomenauts in general.

Blizzard teases Diablo III related 'Reaper of Souls'

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 03:30 AM PDT

While the lasting success of Diablo III could easily be debated due to the "Auction House experiment," Blizzard isn't done with the franchise yet by a longshot. Diablo III is nearly poised to hit the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and now, Blizzard has launched a Diablo related teaser site titled "Reaper of Souls," which could very well be an expansion.

While the elimination of the Auction House (just like the console version) would be ideal, obviously new characters would be a huge plus, and more gameplay-based loot would be killer as well. Whatever the case may be,  I hope Blizzard is able to clean up any shortcomings they may have created over the course of the game's release, because I actually quite like Diablo III as a whole.

Celebrate 20 years of Secret of Mana with fan remix album

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 03:00 AM PDT

It's really been 20 years since Secret of Mana was released. I still listen to the game's amazing soundtrack composed by Hiroki Kikuta on a weekly basis, so it's great news that a group of musical masterminds have combined forces to bring you Spectrum of Mana, a free three-disc album that will feature arrangements of every track from the game.

Just who's involved? How about stemage from Metroid Metal or Tim Yarbrough and William Reyes of The OneUps and The Altered Beasts? There's also this Alexander Brandon guy and about 50 others that you can check out on the album's website.

They're serving up three full-length tracks from the album ("Steampunk Funk" is amazing!) and some artwork to whet your appetite, but we've got dibs on an exclusive track that won't be heard anywhere but Destructoid until the album's release. It features stemage plus a number of other big names and covers one of my favorite tracks, "Mystic Invaders."

Check out our exclusive sample, the three samples from their website, and let us know if they tickle your fancy. Also share with us your fondest memories of the game and its music as we celebrate 20 years of the legend of the holy sword!

The Dishonored saga ends with The Brigmore Witches

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 02:30 AM PDT

If you're ready to jump into the world of Dishonored yet again, The Brigmore Witches is out now on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, and you can get a taste with the above launch trailer. The story brings an end to the tale of Daud, and brings some extra context to the game, including Corvo's place in the narrative.

I actually had a chance to play through the DLC yesterday, and I have to say, it's by far the best representation of Dishonored yet. Like Knife of Dunwall I enjoyed it immensely more than the core game, so when the inevitable GOTY edition hits, it's easily worth your time to experience Daud's side tale. Stay tuned for a full review from our own Fraser Brown.

Killing monsters: Witcher 3 goes philosophical, murderous

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 02:00 AM PDT

Killing monsters. Yeah, that line was as smooth as the beatings are brutal.

This latest cinematic trailer for The Witcher 3 serves as a swift reminder of how excited I am for the game. I still haven't found time to play The Witcher or The Witcher 2, but everything I've read about The Witcher 3, like Jordan's E3 preview, has me chomping at the bit to give the open world action-RPG a go.

Between this and Cyberpunk 2077, I'm expecting magical, magical things out of CD Projekt RED next generation. I wonder if the 2014 release date will allow me to catch up. The only question is Witcher of the 3 systems to get it for.

Grand theft subtlety: GTAV governor candidates are awful

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 01:30 AM PDT

Grand Theft Auto V is getting gubernatorial with these two political campaign videos. Former actor and stuntman Jock Stanley (above) is running against incumbent liberal and "successfully divorced school teacher" Sue Murry (below) for control of the state.

Of course, we know who really runs Los Santos: us. Talk about a videogame power fantasy. We can laugh at hypocritical and downright asinine political candidates with the comfort of knowing their rein on the digital landscape is hollow because we are The Player and we're running things. A much better alternative to the crushing reality. Non-American readers, if you think this characterization is too blatant or on the nose, it's because this is the extreme Rockstar needed to reach so it wouldn't border eerily on passable.

Review: Saints Row IV

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 01:00 AM PDT

When I finished Saints Row: The Third in 2011, I left the experience feeling somewhat sad. It was a good game, but it felt shallow, held back, and ultimately a little disappointing.

When I finished Saints Row IV in 2013, I left the experience feeling incredibly sad. This time, however, it was for very different reasons. I was genuinely depressed to see the credits roll, because Saints Row IV, in contrast to its predecessor, had given me so much to fall in love with, reaching its conclusion could only ever end in disappointment.

It is with a bittersweet heart, then, that I declare Saints Row IV perhaps one of the best open world sandbox games you could ever hope to play, and practically a culmination of everything the genre's worked toward this generation.

Is that an exaggerated, hyperbolic, perhaps even pompous statement? Maybe so ... but does a series like Saints Row deserve anything less?

New trailer for Disney Fantasia: Music Evolved

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Following Disney's D23 Expo last weekend, Harmonix released the latest trailer for their upcoming motion game Disney Fantasia: Music Evolved. "The Evolution of Disney Fantasia," gives us a glimpse at the history behind the animated classic, as well as a fresh look at the new game in action.

In addition, it's been announced that award-winning composer Inon Zur will be contributing original music for the game. Zur, of course, has worked on numerous franchises including Dragon Age, Price of Persia, and many more. The game will also feature over 30 tracks from popular artists such as Bruno Mars, and Queen. Disney Fantasia: Music Evolved is currently scheduled for release in 2014, exclusively on Xbox One and Xbox 360 with Kinect.

That Dragon, Cancer coming to that console, Ouya

Posted: 13 Aug 2013 11:00 PM PDT

That Dragon, Cancer will be coming to the Ouya in 2014. According to the game's website, "Ouya has chosen to invest in the game to assist with development costs and ensure our game gets made," which no doubt was a good incentive for the two person indie team that is still living on its savings. The heartrending game is an autobiographical tale of writer Amy Green and developer Ryan Green dealing with their young son's terminal cancer.

On a more philosophical level, That Dragon, Cancer's Ryan Green has said that they want to, "create a safe space for people to talk about hard thing," and that the living room is a perfect place for it. As for why they are releasing it first on the Ouya, specifically, Green said, "the short answer is, they have the guts to make something they believe in, in an industry that is stacked against their success."

It's a nice sentiment amidst the negative press the Ouya has received thus far, I suppose. I also have to commend Ouya's Kellee Santiago for going after the game, according to Gamasutra, and putting some money towards getting it finished. Given the heavy content, I'm not sure it will end up the big seller Ouya seems to need, so it's to see them committed towards getting all sorts of content up.

We have dug some shallow Spelunky graves

Posted: 13 Aug 2013 07:00 PM PDT

Jordan and I positively adore Spelunky, and it's a love shared by quite a few of us at Destructoid, having named it the best console exclusive of 2012. But it's exclusive no more, and the PC release brings with it the tantalizing promise of competitive spirit through daily challenge stages.

Rather than actually get very skilled at the game and compete on the leaderboards, we have chosen to cripple our already limited abilities by adding the pressure of recording every adventure we take into the ruins and sharing them with you in a new series, The Daily Spelunk

We're planning a whole mess of segments and gags and other stuff as we develop the show. For now, however, please enjoy this incredibly embarrassing display of poor gaming prowess.

The Daily Hotness: Iwata laughs

Earlier today, we wrote about the latest Iwata Asks, in which Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata interviewed Platinum Games' Hideki Kamiya, director of the upcoming Wii U title Wonderful 101 and a bunch of vaunted Clover classics (Viewtiful Joe, Okami). In it, Kamiya talks Resident Evil. Capcom, Clover, and more. Iwata laughs. It's interesting and surprisingly warm and candid. Give it a read.

Today. we had reviews for DuckTales Remastered and The Denpa Men 2: Beyond the Waves, community member Corduroy Turtle wrote up an enormous guide for Spelunky, we brought you an exclusive first-look at Windborne's debut trailer, and more!
