| Mega Kangkaskhan revealed at Pokemon World Championship Posted: 10 Aug 2013 02:00 PM PDT The newly revealed "Mega Evolution" feature in Pokemon X/Y seems to have sparked the interest many who were otherwise lukewarm towards the release. These mid-battle transformations appear to be true game changers, altering the potential combat prowess in both series favorites and frequently overlooked combatants in ways that are continually surprising. The other Mega Evolutions announced so far have all been graced with ridiculous, wondrous locks, but Mega Kangaskhan appears to buck that trend. Instead of a new coif, Kangaskhan gains the support of her previously pouched offspring. A baby hops out of Mama's belly and joins the dramatic battle, doubling the Pokemon's amount of attacks. The Pokemon series is notoriously weird when it comes to defining what constitutes a single combatant. A group of angry-faced eggs? That's one Pokemon. Three dopey looking heads sticking out of the ground? Yep, also just one Pokemon. A Pokemon and its child? Also totally just one Pokemon. This bizarre new interpretation of basic math combined with clear issues of child endangerment make Mega Kangaskhan one of the most controversial Pokemon in recent memory. Those issues don't seem to bother the crowds at Vancouver's Pokemon World Championship one bit. Many have fantasized about Kangaskhan's pampered protegee finally entering the fray for years, and now that it's finally happening, they do not appear to be disappointed. Nothing turns on the crowd like seeing a little purple marsupial lizard baby get violent. Another Mega Pokémon announced at Worlds 2013: One of the classic 151 is EVOLVING! [NeoGAF] |
| SICK NASTY! Check this rockin' Mega Man X fan medley Posted: 10 Aug 2013 01:00 PM PDT Self-taught Chilean guitarist Satou Brainchild, who performed at Video Games Live in Santiago last year, spent several months assembling a medley of tunes from the first five Mega Man X games, i.e. the PROPER series before Capcom f*cked up the canon for the sake of more money. This is that medley. It is glorious. If you wish to download it, hit up Satou's SoundCloud page here. Megaman X Medley Music cover [YouTube via The Mega Man Network] |
| Hyperkin's Pixel Art Controller looks so uncomfortable Posted: 10 Aug 2013 12:00 PM PDT Videogame accessory maker Hyperkin must not like its customers very much. Why else would it design a controller that looks like it could shred the skin on your palms like grated Parmesan? This September, Hyperkin is releasing a line of PC / Mac controllers that resemble SNES gamepads, only in retro-tastic pixelated form. There are the US and Europe / Japan color schemes, of course, but then there are others like the Hulk green number complete with purple shoulder buttons. Even though these look like something the Mooninites from Aqua Teen would use, I admit that they are definitely striking. I probably wouldn't actually use one because I'm having flashbacks to my old Mario Party N64 analog stick injury. Hyperkin's Pixel Art Controller [Tiny Cartridge] |
| Posted: 10 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT It's no secret that one of my favorite iOS games of all time is RocketCat Games' Hook Champ. It perfectly captures the concept of a touchscreen control scheme, by giving you the simple ability to grab onto pretty much anywhere on the screen, and flip your way to victory without the frustration of a clunky virtual d-pad. In another corner of the world, a small group of people felt the same way, but they took their appreciation a bit further. They created Mikey Hooks as an homage to Hook Champ, striving to re-create the experience RocketCat nailed so perfectly. |
| Bread Kitty, Knightmare Tower, Amateur Surgeon, & Nuns Posted: 10 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT Bread Kitty by developer Bake450 is kind of like Pokemon, except it involves all real world cats. You collect, battle, and train these cats, and part of the battling system involves you equipping various types of bread around your cat's faces to improve their combat ability. Yes, the bread cat meme has been converted into a battle game and it's super adorable. The art style is pretty cute, there's multiplayer, over 100 different types of cats to collect (ranging from household kitties to big cats like tigers), and it's pretty easy to play. It's free to download for iOS devices. |
| Huge sale over at the Microsoft Store Posted: 10 Aug 2013 08:45 AM PDT Clearing out room for the Xbox One -- well that's my guess anyways -- the Microsoft Store is running a huge sale on a plethora of Xbox 360 titles and a couple of PC games to boot. There's a wide range of titles on sale, with some great deals to grab at around $10, so act fast as some games like Lollipop Chainsaw, Kingdoms of Amalur, and the Witcher 2 are already gone. Still there's a few hidden gems like Binary Domain and one of my personal favorites of this generation Asura's Wrath. Shipping is also free and, if my memory serves me correctly from the last time I ordered from the Microsoft Store, quite speedy. For a complete list check out the handy breakdown provided by jdawgg76 over at Cheapassgamer. |
| There's a Canada-only DuckTales iOS third-person shooter Posted: 10 Aug 2013 08:00 AM PDT While fans of the Disney Afternoon have been anxiously awaiting the release of DuckTales Remastered, Disney had tossed a separate DuckTales-branded game onto iOS devices. It is called DuckTales: Scrooge's Loot, and it is a third-person shooter. Wait. It gets better. This game is currently exclusive to Canada. Say what now? In this title, the Beagle Boys have snagged Scrooge's money, so it's up to the citizens of Duckburg to get the gold back. You get to play as such memorable DuckTales characters as... Adventurer! Inventor! Chef! Pilot! Remember the episode where Scrooge squared off against Chef to win a four-player deathmatch? I think Gizmoduck might have been in that one. | Review: Divinity: Dragon Commander Posted: 10 Aug 2013 07:00 AM PDT Dragons and jetpacks, Civilization and StarCraft. Mix'em all together and what do you get? Divinity: Dragon Commander. Okay, it's a bit more complicated than that, but those are certainly the core elements at play when discussing Divinity: Dragon Commander. It's not quite a real-time strategy game as complex as StarCraft, and it's just shy of being as big-picture as Civilization. It does have jetpack-wearing dragons, however, which sort of puts things in perspective. I mean, what else really matters? |
| Senran Kagura Burst will hit retail AND digital in Europe Posted: 10 Aug 2013 06:00 AM PDT Gentlemen, get your oils and scented candles ready, because Senran Kagura Burst will be arriving in Europe some time in Q1 2014. Americans received a localization confirmation from XSEED earlier this week, seemingly leaving our brothers across the pond out in the cold. Publisher Zen United has thankfully taken up the cause of bringing 3DS schoolgirl ninja brawling to Euro Land. Though the American version is slated to be digital only, the European version will receive both an eShop and retail release. You may remember back when XSEED executive vice president Ken Berry explained that a physical release of Senran Kagura would likely be out of the cards "due to the subject matter and difference in attitudes between Japanese culture and the more conservative culture here in the US." The whole of Europe apparently does not share the same attitudes, which cements the States as the biggest prudes in the developed world. But at least now everyone will have the chance to purchase Burst. I've been legitimately interested ever since watching the manic gameplay clips on YouTube, so count me in. | Kick alien ass in Saints Row IV Posted: 10 Aug 2013 04:00 AM PDT "We're definitely turning the tables on the aliens. For all the misery they've inflicted on the human race, being able to use the alien probe on them seems only just." -- Jim Boone, senior producer on Saints Row IV. Quote of the year, ladies and gentlemen. Quote of the year. |
| Arma III comes out September 12 Posted: 10 Aug 2013 03:00 AM PDT Rejoice! Arma III is coming out on PC on September 12. Developer Bohemia Interactive will be celebrating the launch by hosting a live today at 17:00PM UTC over on their Twitch.TV channel. You can grab the came now while in beta before it goes up in price, for either $44.99 for the standard edition, or $59.99 for the deluxe edition. | Drive a piano as Batman in Grand Theft Auto IV Posted: 10 Aug 2013 02:00 AM PDT Our friends at Inside Gaming are back messing with various Grand Theft Auto IV mods with voice actors Jason Zumwalt (voice of Roman from GTA IV) and Oliver Vaquer (voice of Robert Lutece in BioShock Infinite) and the latest episode is bonkers. First they're playing as Batman. Then they drive around in a piano. Yes, a piano. Finally, a sh*t ton of Supermans come out of nowhere and are wielding assault rifles. Videogames! Bonus: Here's just the piano mod set to some appropriate music. |
| More details on the Amazon console surface Posted: 10 Aug 2013 01:00 AM PDT TechCrunch has heard from its own sources regarding the Amazon console, and they have quite a bit more info to share. The hardware Amazon is building could be powered by a Qualcomm MPQ chip, which is the Snapdragon processor line that's used in smart TVs and set-top box devices already. They speculate that this console is the same one that Wall Street Journal reported on before, suggesting that Amazon is looking to put out a media box that offers games, music, and movie services. Additionally, TechCrunch has heard from multiple sources that Amazon has approached developers to create exclusive games for their console, on top of all the third-party offerings. Amazon is definitely working on something. If so, it will certainly give Roku, Ouya, GameStick, and others a run for their money. The exception being if Google's own rumored console turn out to be true. That, and if Apple actually decides to enter the ring as well. | Team play is encouraged, never forced in Battlefield 4 Posted: 09 Aug 2013 11:00 PM PDT Lead multiplayer designer Thomas Andersson took to the Battlefield 4 blog and detailed what one of his main goals were when creating the game's multiplayer mode. "We want to build upon what makes Battlefield 3 great, and one of the areas where Battlefield shines is team play," Thomas said. "The way we’re going about it in Battlefield 4 is to highly encourage team play – but never force it. We want to promote team play by creating great gameplay mechanics such as Field Upgrades, Commander Mode, and a new range of gadgets specifically designed to expand co-operation in the field. We have drastically expanded on the tools and benefits of efficient team play, and as a result we feel Battlefield 4’s multiplayer experience is the deepest, most rewarding, and fun experience in the series." Thomas then details Field Upgrades, which are chained boosts that can affect a number of gameplay mechanics. Basically, it's a way to give individual rewards for squad based team work. |
| See Elizabeth's new duds in Bioshock's Burial at Sea Posted: 09 Aug 2013 09:00 PM PDT We recently got word that the next DLC for Bioshock Infinite would be the two-part Burial at Sea, which brings Booker and Elizabeth to Rapture on the eve of its downfall. Also, it's film noir as heck. Chinatown with splicers. I'm all about this; I'm always ringing the "more noir" knell. What's more, you'll actually be able to play as Elizabeth in the second part, in a more "survival horror" manner because, "Elizabeth is not like Booker, she’s not a huge tank." Her waist is too thin to absorb bullets like Booker's, you see. After the great Elizabeth cosplay leading up to Infinite's release, Irrational actually hired cosplayer Anna Moleva. Elizabeth has proven a fan favorite among cosplayers, sew Irrational is hooking fans up with a much needled full look at Elizabeth's new style to give people a shot to craft more rad cosplay. I'm just glad I can finally put my fishnets to good use. |
| This fan made Half-Life 3 teaser trailer is pretty great Posted: 09 Aug 2013 07:00 PM PDT Will Half-Life 3 ever come out? I'm at that point where I've lost all anticipation. Still, exceptional fan made trailers like this give me a small glimmer of hope. |
| The Daily Hotness: Everybody hates Milhouse Posted: 09 Aug 2013 04:59 PM PDT The poor blue-haired bastard that can't seem to get a lick of respect from anyone, Milhouse Van Houten will always occupy the softest part of whatever love I still hold for The Simpsons. So let the angelic vocals of Cossbysweater remind you of what this sad child has had to endure for the last 24 years. Today, we say goodbye to Microsoft Points with the next Xbox Live update, Deep Silver unveils their $1 million dollar edition of Saints Row IV, Pokemon X and Y introduces new mega-evolutions, Sega teases a Yakuza related announcement for August 18th, and Target is going to have Vitas on sale for $199.99.
