Possibly the best custom Contra figures ever

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 04:00 PM PDT

You've probably heard the story, right? How basically Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone were used as "influences" when designing the cover and character art for the main heroes of Contra.

Well someone has taken that story to the next level by taking Arnold and Sylvester figures and customizing them into Bill "Mad Dog" Rizer, and Lance "Scorpion" Bean. The figures come in at 7", are hand painted, feature weathering effects, and have a removable bandolier and flak vest.

There's even custom weapons! The spread gun, machine gun, and laser from Contra are part of the set.

The current bid as of this writing is at $41, and there's three days left to go before the auction ends.

[Thanks, Nathan!]

Juliet Starling to appear in Killer is Dead

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 03:00 PM PDT

The Killer is Dead launch trailer is here, which means the game is finally almost upon us. Clocking in at a lengthy eight minutes, it should give you a decent look at what to expect -- and that's to say, the classic, crazy Suda charm we all know and love. But beyond the trailer, something else is happening in the world of Killer is Dead.

That's right, a new challenger appears -- Juliet Starling of Lollipop Chainsaw fame! How she exactly ties into the game isn't really known outside of the fact that she's "hidden" somewhere, but I'm happy to see the star of this underrated Suda gem get some screen time.

Japanese players that find her can enter a raffle to win various prizes, which is pretty neat -- if you're in Japan, that is.

2K will officially announce XCOM: Enemy Within this month

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 02:30 PM PDT

Now that listings for XCOM: Enemy Within are out in the wild, 2K has come out to confirm that an announcement will be happening soon.

The reveal is set to take place on Wednesday, August 21 -- right around when gamescom 2013 will be starting -- and until then, we'll be crossing our fingers that this thing is a full-fledged sequel, not DLC for Enemy Unknown.

I mean, c'mon -- the name is too cool to use on DLC. Give us more of the good stuff, Firaxis.

Microsoft rolls out Xbox Community Level for ambassadors

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 01:30 PM PDT

Microsoft is expanding its Xbox Community Ambassadors support program. With the new "Xbox Community Level," those helpful individuals as well as folks in the Enforcement United beta will be rewarded for their good deeds. This gamified system is "designed to track positive contributions by our community members and provide rewards for those contributions."

Members earn actual experience points which will go toward leveling up and unlocking "loot." Yes, loot -- and by that they mean Avatar items, among other things. "Our goal in building this program wasn't to create a new community activity to squeeze in alongside others," writes Microsoft. "Instead, we wanted to build a platform that could connect otherwise separate community activities and unify contributions across Xbox Live into one cohesive, meaningful score. Ultimately, we imagine your Community Level becoming as integral to your Xbox Live identity as your Gamerscore, tenure, and reputation."

One could easily take a cynical stance toward Microsoft farming out support -- but heck, if they want to lend a hand, so be it. Adding some extra motivation seems like a nice idea.

This Mega Man plush Servbot hat is 'dawwwww

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 01:00 PM PDT

Mega Man Legends 3 may be dead, but the legend lives on through fans. Whether it's with a heart-felt public display of respect, or fan game after fan game, people can't get enough of Mega Man Volnutt, Tron Bonne, and those adorable Servbots.

That goes for merchandising as well, as Great Eastern Entertainment, a licensed anime and merch dealer has just put up a listing for an amazing Servbot hat, complete with dangly arms! Right now we don't have any details as far as a release date or price, but it does exist.

I don't have any Servbot merch yet sadly, so I'm all about this.

Sleeping Dogs, Papa & Yo, & BioShock are your Daily Deals

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 12:30 PM PDT

We're going to try and cover some more special offers, daily deals and bundles here on Destructoid, the internet never sleeps and you never know when you might miss out on some great money saving deals. Right now Steam has two great games from 2012 on offer; Sleeping Dogs and Papa & Yo are both 75% off

Hamza's already let us know about the big savings on id and Bethesda titles on Steam during Quakecon, but I thought I'd highlight an underplayed gem in the Bethesda catalogue, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. What initially looks like a horribly brown FPS is actually a really good survival horror game, despite the latter part of the game being fairly flat. It's only £4.49/$7.49.

Looking further afield, GamersGate have a new quartet of daily deals including Just Cause, Cities XL 2011, and Call of Juarez Gunslinger. Amazon have cut the price of a Bioshock triple pack down to just $34.99

David Anfossi is the new head of Eidos Montreal studio

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 12:00 PM PDT

After the surprising resignation of Stephane D'Astous earlier in July, Eidos Montreal have announced that David Anfossi is the new head of the studio. Anfossi was the Executive Producer of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, the studio's first game and he's been at Eidos Montreal since day one.

D'Astous left Eidos Montreal citing "irreconcilable differences" between the studio and the European branch of parent company Square Enix, after poor sales expectations of the Tomb Raider, Hitman: Absolution and Sleeping Dogs. With Square Enix announcing a Tomb Raider sequel is in the works, one can only hope that there is a clear strategy at the publisher and that Anfossi won't be distracted from having the studio finish the upcoming Thief

Pre-purchase Papers Please on Steam

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 11:30 AM PDT

Hidden inside one of Greenlight's smaller updates was the intriguing Papers Please, developed by Lucas Pope, which you can now pre-purchase on Steam. You take on the role of an Immigration Officer in the border town of Grestin in the fictional country of Arstoztka. It's your job to check the official documents of people entering from the neighboring country Kolechia, with whom Arstotztka has been at war with for six years.

As migrants come to the desk, the player has to check the status of their documents against an official rulebook. Despite the hostilities between the two countries ceasing, criminals, terrorists and spies will try and get entrance to Arstotztka; so will refugees, the desperate, and the poor.

Whilst you have your own job to think of, can you make personal sacrifices to aid the truly needy? It's a game that plays on your expectations and your ability to empathize. Papers Please costs £6.99/$9.99 and will release on August 8.

Take On Mars lands on Steam Early Access

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 11:15 AM PDT

Last month, we heard that Bohemia Interactive's Mars exploration simulation Take On Mars would be coming to Steam Early Access today. They were not lying; it is now available to purchase for $12.99 on Steam.

The player acts from ground control, directing landers and rovers remotely, just like your favorite JPL engineer would. Take On Mars boasts an impressive attention to detail, with various pieces of scientific equipment at the player's disposal. Through the completion of various science missions, the secrets of the red planet's distance past will be revealed. Too cool.

Wolfenstein: The New Order moved back to 2014

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 11:00 AM PDT

MachineGames and Bethesda have delayed the cross-generational Wolfenstein: The New Order, it was revealed today. "Working on next-gen and current gen definitely has an impact, you're developing for two different things," VP of PR and marketing Pete Hines told Polygon. "The fact that the next-gen stuff is still moving is also definitely a factor."

He explains that the game is "trying to be a shooter that also has driving elements, story elements, narrative, stealth sections -- each one of those has to be excellent. It's not just like we're making a shooter, where if the shooting is good, then all 16 hours of the game will be good because it's all we're doing."

You've got to respect Hines' willingness to be candid about development. "MachineGames has been working on this game for a while," he continued. "You don't want to waste all that time and effort for the sake of a couple of months, if a couple of months could make all of the difference in the world. This needs to be the best Wolfenstein game ever made, and you can't shortcut that. It can't have the same historical impact of Wolfenstein 3D, but it can be a better game."

From the brief amount of time I've spent with The New Order, I had a similar reaction to Hamza, who wasn't feeling especially enthusiastic about this one. Knowing that and the reasons provided here by Bethesda, it's probably for the best that we happily wait until next year.

Live show: Savant Ascend and Rise of the Triad

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 10:30 AM PDT

[Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.]

Tonight on Mash Tactics, we have a double feature that is damn near guaranteed to pop your eyes from their sockets, and perchance melt your brain just a bit. In only the very best of ways of course. To start the show, we'll be kicking things off with a wee bit of Savant AscensionIf you've never heard of it, allow me to try and explain. Picture a tough-as-nails bullet-hell shooter with an art style slightly reminiscent of Castlevania, add in an amazing electronic soundtrack, then top it all off with an addictive hook to beat your previous high score, and you're starting to get the picture.

Leaving no time to recover from that intense madness, we'll be jumping right into another slightly insane twitch-o-thon in the form of Rise of the Triad. If you somehow missed out on the original back in the day, now is your chance to witness the simple pleasures of lightning-fast, old-school first-person shooters. Pleasures such as blasting the holy hell out of anything that moves with an explosive arsenal, watching bodies spray blood like it was coming out of a high-pressure hose, gratuitous dismemberment, and of course the occasional pair of eyeballs getting blown onto the inside of your monitor. It's really all about the little things in life, isn't it?

Blizzard's Titan unlikely to be a subscription-based MMO

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 10:15 AM PDT

Last we heard of the MMO Titan, the project had reportedly been pushed back to 2016 and some of its staff shuffled around. During a quarterly earnings call for Activision Blizzard, it was clarified by Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime that the company is "in the process of selecting a new direction for the project and re-envisioning what we want the game to be."

That would explain why we've only heard rumblings about this thing despite it being in development for what feels like quite a long time, at this point. It was, what, 2007 when word of Titan first broke? Morhaime did give one additional tidbit during the call: "While we can't talk about the details yet, it is unlikely to be a subscription-based MMORPG."

I don't know of anyone who enjoys paying monthly fees, so that's nice to hear.

Wait, what the hell is Always Sometimes Monsters? It's a new game from Devolver, and we're going to have to wait until PAX to find out just what the hell it's all about. Otherwise, I'm excited for all of Devlover's lineup. Every game is super fun to play here.

Impressions: Sonic & Mega Man: Worlds Collide #10-12

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Sonic and Mega Man's crossover adventures in Archie's "Worlds Collide" is at an end. Because the story wove through the Mega ManSonic Universe, and Sonic the Hedgehog comics, we were blessed with three chapters per month instead of the typical one. The downside is that the 12-part miniseries blew through in no time at all. At least we had fun!

Mega Man #27, Sonic Universe #54, and Sonic the Hedgehog #251 conclude the harrowing tale that begin way back in April. Sonic and Mega Man storm the Wily Egg battle station, tear through the last of Eggman and Wily's defenses, then square off against the devious doctors in one final, space-time-bending showdown with the fate of two universes in the balance. Unfortunately, the outcome isn't rosy for all parties involved.

Before we hop into the story synopsis and my final thoughts, I welcome you to refresh yourselves with my impressions of the first, second, and third sets of issues. It's all been leading up to this!

inFamous: Second Son gets a new developer diary

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 08:30 AM PDT

The team over at Sucker Punch has created a developer diary of sorts that gives us a closer look into the world of inFamous; Second Son, which is heading to the PlayStation 4 in 2014. It's basically an in-depth take on the various graphical enhancements made to the franchise, and more importantly, how powers and maneuverability will work.

This is looking pretty solid on paper, but I hope it delivers. I wasn't a huge fan of inFamous 1, because I felt like it was way too "by the numbers." inFamous 2 was an improvement, but Festival of Blood really hit the sweet spot for me, as playing as a vampire helped really increase the fun factor. I hope Second Son is more like the latter.

Ubisoft announcing a new next-gen title at gamescom

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Sure, Ubisoft is skipping their usual gamescom press conference this year, but that doesn't mean they're going to have a light lineup at the show. In fact, Ubisoft will be unveiling a new next-gen game!

On top of that, they'll have Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, The Crew, three different Might & Magic titles, The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot, Rayman Legends, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, and Watch Dogs all playable for fans. This will also be the first time anyone in the public can try out the mobile versus mode of Watch Dogs.

See? That's a pretty big lineup.

Grand Theft Auto V has been rated R18+ in Australia

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 07:30 AM PDT

Following recent issues with Saints Row IV getting properly classified by the Australian Classification Board, it's something of a pleasant surprise to see that Grand Theft Auto V has moved through the process and successfully come out with an R18+ rating.

The game's drug use -- described by the board as "high impact" -- was cause for concern, as it has been with other games like State of Decay. GTA V also has plenty of sex, nudity, violence, and harsh language, but those categories all got away with "strong impact" marks.

I don't think I'll ever fully understand the thought process that goes into rating media.

Review: Rise of the Triad

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 07:00 AM PDT

Rise of the Triad was one of the most significant PC FPS games ever made in the genre's history. Using an enhanced version of the Wolfenstein 3D engine, Triad provided one of the goriest experiences ever at the time, and boasted an incredibly complex level design.

Going a step further, it also was one of the most advanced multiplayer games ever as it boasted 11 player deathmatches, and it was the first mainstream FPS to feature a Capture the Flag mode.

While contemporary FPS fans may not recognize Rise of the Triad today, the fact remains -- the 2013 remake by Interceptor Entertainment has some big shoes to fill.

Polytron 'working with Sony,' Fez Mac/Linux ports coming

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 06:15 AM PDT

It was shocking to see Fez designer Phil Fish announce both his departure from the games industry and the cancellation of FEZ II, a project we knew little about but one I really would've liked to see come to fruition. The news also came as a surprise to Polytron producer Marie-Christine Bourdua and Fez programmer Renaud Bédard, who "[learned] it the same minute you did," according to Joystiq.

"The development of FEZ II is up to him," said Bédard. "If he decided [to cancel it] now or he decided it at the end of development, it's easier to cut it out now, than it is to say 'Hey, we've been working on this for years and I'm not feeling able to finish it.' So in that way it just makes more sense." Bourdua told the outlet that "I respect and trust Phil a lot, so that's totally fair that he decided that and he has his reasons."

As for the original Fez, Mac and Linux versions are still being developed and "there's other stuff on the way, too," according to Bourdua. Polytron is said to be "working with Sony," which suggests good things to me, but who knows. Either way, Bédard promises that "announcements are going to come really, really soon."

Player reputation will actually matter on Xbox One

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 05:45 AM PDT

Under the Xbox One's new reputation system, players will be marked "good player," "needs work," or "avoid me," and the consequences of online behavior will be stricter. Whereas the Xbox 360's approach was "was more of a soft barrier," according to Microsoft SmartMatch senior program manager Micheal Dunn, here the goal is to "make sure you’re playing with people you can have a conversation with." And that means segregation in some instances.

For random matchmaking in online games, the "avoid me" crowd will be blocked off from the other two player segments, reports Ars Technica. Before it gets to that point, though, Microsoft will send cautionary messages in an attempt to get players to change their behavior. For specifics on how the system will work -- most of you needn't be worried about your reputation -- Dunn gives some approximate numbers and examples of how it'll play out.

"The theme is it really takes hundreds or thousands of people across the community to affect your rep as a new player," he said. "One or two pieces of bad feedback from a week's worth of play or something -- that's not really going to affect you very much. Everyone has an accident, everyone has a bad match, someone they didn't get along with. But if you're consistently, across the community, a person people say they don't like, that’s what's going to affect you."

Certain types of games on Xbox Live have become notorious for their communities and one can only hope that this initiative will help turn that sentiment around. Sectioning off the worst of the worst has worked on a per-game basis; here's hoping we see a sweeping change on a platform-wide level with public matchmaking.

Square Enix confirms next-gen Tomb Raider is in the works

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 05:15 AM PDT

A next-gen sequel to Tomb Raider is "well into development," Square Enix CEO for the Americas and Europe Phil Rogers confirmed today. The announcement follows word that writer Gail Simone is working with Dark Horse Comics on a canonical comic that will "lead directly into the sequel."

The news may come as something of a surprise considering Square Enix complained that Tomb Raider only managed to sell 3.4 million copies in its first three weeks on the market. Still, the title garnered significant critical acclaim and is one of the publisher's hottest properties. It's not at all shocking that we have yet to see the last of Lara Croft.

Nintendo Download: Pikmin 3

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 04:45 AM PDT

After a relatively meh offering last week, Nintendo is bouncing back a bit with a decent showing for this week's Nintendo Download. For starters, Cloudberry Kingdom is hitting the Wii U eShop, with Harvest Moon hitting the Virtual Console, and Pikmin 3 dropping on Sunday, August 4th. Hulu Plus is also having a promotion where new customers can get two free months.

On the 3DS side, the eShop is getting Bike Rider DX, Family Kart 3D, and My Farm 3D. Not the most exciting games, I know, but the amazing Kirby's Dream Land 2 is coming to the 3DS Virtual Console, a full year after hitting Europe.

There's a code hidden in Pikmin 3, according to Miyamoto

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 04:30 AM PDT

Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto has taken to the Miiverse to tease a code in Pikmin 3 that can be found by collecting Secret Memos scattered throughout the game:

"Did you know that once you've collected ten of these Secret Memos, the numbers contained in them will combine to form a special code? I'll be in touch again to explain how to use the code, so be sure to make a note of it once you have it!"

Having collected a handful of them already, I figured they were mostly just fan service. The Internet seems to have magical puzzle-solving powers, so someone out there will crack this, I'm sure. Miyamoto also reminded us to "check out Mission and Bingo Battle -- they're a lot of fun too!" He really wants us to play Bingo Battle, doesn't he?

Savant is a dubstep bullet hell brawler with elevators

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 03:45 AM PDT

I will admit it: dubstep is one of my guilty pleasures. It just makes me want to ride on top of perilously fast elevators while firing magic missiles at monsters and dodging their seeping maws. Oddly specific, I know, but apparently D-Pad Studio has a similar reaction, as shown above in the psycho dubstep Castlevania-esque fever dream Savant.

The project is a collaboration between the development studio best known for PAX 10 2013 finalist Owlboy and dubstep artist Savant. The title releases today for PC, with Android, iOS, Linux, and Mac releases planned for "later," with an Ouya release as a possibility.

Forza 5 developer: 'Xbox One cloud offers 600% more AI'

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 03:30 AM PDT

Forza 5 is coming later this year on the Xbox One, and if it's even half as good as promised, it'll probably be a treat for racing fans. Developer Turn 10 recently spoke to OXM about the development process, and mostly chose to focus on one major facet -- the Xbox One's cloud processing capabilities.

Turn 10's studio manager Alan Hartman stated, "a massive game, a quality game, an innovative game. At launch of the console. It's crazy hard. It's the hardest thing we've ever done. But it's exciting, we're having fun, but it's a huge challenge." But the biggest challenge was apparently the "Drivatar AI" system, which boasts a vastly smarter artificial intelligence design, drawing from cloud-stored data to increase the experience.

Creative director Dan Greenawalt expands on the Drivatar tech, explaining, "When you've got a learning neural network, more computing power is nothing but helpful. Because what you're able to do is process a lot more information, and you don't have to do it in realtime on the box. And that frees up more of the box to be doing graphics or audio or other computational areas. So we can now make our AI instead of just being 20%, 10% of the box's capability, we can make it 600% of the box's capability."

It all sounds great on paper, but will it pan out? I guess we'll have to wait until later this year to see for sure.

Why am I going public with this?

Mostly because I just want people to know that really I am grateful for the support I've gotten over the years of my work, and that if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't of been able to live my dream.

'Online only' PS4 title Deep Down gets teaser, info

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 03:00 AM PDT

Did you notice the "Capcom Online Games" logo at the advent of this Deep Down trailer? It might seem familiar, also showing up in conjunction with the recently announced Breath of Fire 6. Like the latter, it seems that Deep Down, recently trotted out and shown off at the Capcom Network Games Conference in Japan, is also an online RPG.

According to Dual Shockers, "'Online Only' is mentioned" and an internet connection is required. I wonder what that means. Capcom also announced the title would be playable at Tokyo Game Show, so I guess we'll learn more soon. Until then, enjoy this new, mildly creepy teaser trailer and this teaser website, which is pretty and has nice music.

It's also worth noting that the PlayStation 4 is still the only platform associated with Deep Down, which debuted at Sony's PS4 announcement conference, though no official exclusivity has been declared. Start your speculating. How is the online focus going to pan out? Is Deep Down a PS4 exclusive? Is Deep Down going to be the ultimate title, given the "working title" note in the video thumbanil? I'm partial to Eep Dow, personally.

Street Fighter X All Capcom is a thing

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 02:30 AM PDT

In addition to Breath of Fire 6 and a bunch of other social titles, Capcom Online Games has announced a peculiar addition -- Street Fighter X All Capcom for iOS and Android. The banner features a number of different Capcom characters, most notably stylized versions of Ryu, and even Mega Man, so this crossover isn't just stuck on fighting games.

Capcom has been slowly ditching major franchises other than Monster Hunter and Street Fighter in favor of a ton of mobile games, so this naturally makes sense. My only issue is that if you're going to do that, at least make them good.

It's been shown time and time again that it is possible to make quality mobile versions of established franchises, and I really hope Capcom starts going down that path, rather than pumping out constant quick cash-ins.

Wii U should expect 20-30 new indie games by the holidays

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 02:00 AM PDT

Early this year, Nintendo hopped aboard the train to Indiesville, coaxing all sorts of positive assessments of the company's and the Wii U's future. Those investments, of course, are long term. Now that Nintendo has dropped various barriers to indie publishing, save for in Japan, oddly enough, it has to wait for the content to drop while Wii U sales hit dramatic lows.

Fun fact: Bioshock Infinite has sold more copies than Wii U has shipped consoles. Not a barometer for anything, just fun with numbers.

Games might just start flowing in, however, according to Nintendo's Business Development Manager and general indie guy Dan Adelman. Speaking to Joystiq, Adelman said of the indie space, "We underestimated how much demand was out there, so we're trying to catch up a little bit." "Catch up a bit" it seems the Wii U's indie eShop presence is doing. Apparently 20-30 new indie games are expected to hit the Wii U eShop by the holidays.

Good news for the console, though it perhaps could've used some of those games earlier on, as now its bigger name retail releases are dropping, like Pikmin 3 and everything else in the fall lineup, like Wonderful 101 and Rayman Legends. Will a deluge of indie games sell you on the platform? Are you even going to pick any of them up amidst another saturated fall and holiday release window?

Platinum is chronicling Wonderful 101 through their blog

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 01:30 AM PDT

Platinum Games is one of my favorite developers in the industry. Not only do they have an amazing eye for striking visual designs, but they also craft some of the deepest, technical action games of this generation -- in fact, they're one of the only technical action developers left.

So if you're anything like me, you're insanely excited for the upcoming release of Wonderful 101 on the Wii U, and Platinum is helping to ease the wait with some insightful blogs on the game on their official site. You can view the first entry here, and you'll find the Wonderful 101 tag here, for all possible future entries.

Killzone Vita's multiplayer is poisonous and I love it

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 01:00 AM PDT

I initially scoffed towards every bit of this explanation of Killzone: Mercenary's multiplayer systems. I don't much care for multiplayer, so why should I care that offline singleplayer progress yields weapons and stats that can go towards multiplayer? Well, while I may not care, it's sort of a neat idea and could keep people playing Killzone offline, out and about, to abet their online performance. More important, however, are valor cards.

Mercenary does away with stagnant character rank systems, relying on daily "valor cards" which can be used to make fat stacks (of money). What's more, in multiplayer you compete for valor cards. I immediately viewed this system in suspicion and disdain. Wouldn't it just breed a cutthroat climate centered on a vacuous, false economy, perpetuating a Skinner box mentality of collection and constant score upkeep?

Then I saw a valor card spring forth from the corpse of a dead enemy combatant and something innate and animalistic inside of me screamed, "I want that." I am going to skin you all alive and fashion your valor cards into ornate jewelry hung about my neck until I grow hunched under the weight of my trophies.

One of the first PSP games that spoke to me was Infected and its promise of virality, of being able to defeat someone in multiplayer fisticuffs and then have your player avatar infect and haunt their single-player experience. It was a cool concept executed poorly, but I love the maliciousness to it, the insult to injury. I don't just want to kill someone in a multiplayer game. I want to take from them. Something precious. Man, I'm awful.

Killzone: Mercenary looks really good. The multiplayer is currently in closed beta. An open beta will begin at the end of August. I won't seek help, but I will keep from slithering under your beds.

This Monster Hunter Frontier G PS3/Wii U trailer is great

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 12:30 AM PDT

Monster Hunter Frontier Online is already available in Japan for the PC and Xbox 360, but to celebrate the upcoming Wii U and PlayStation 3 releases, Capcom has given us a new trailer for the update titled Monster Hunter Frontier G. To be clear, the original game was released in 2007 (as an upgrade to Monster Hunter 2), and it's online-only with a monthly fee -- so don't get too excited.

The new versions will run on their own servers, but offer the "exact same content," said Director Tatsumi Kimoto. Kimoto also confirms that they're working on something special for the Wii U GamePad (or even 3DS functionality), but he can't "guarantee" anything yet.

While I'm sure this will excite some of the more hardcore Monster Hunter re-release fans, I'm just waiting for the brand new Monster Hunter 4.

Breath of Fire 6 coming next year, you'll be sad to learn

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 12:00 AM PDT

And here I thought the tardy release of a third Golden Sun was awkward.

Show of hands: Who has been waiting patiently for a proper Breath of Fire game? Well cut your filthy peasant hands off and slap yourselves in the face with them because Capcom has announced Breath of Fire 6, a browser/tablet/smart phone game slated for 2014 release. I'm not sure all the bravest of us could handle such news.

I mean, it makes sense. Recent entrants in the Breath of Fire series -- basically any within the last decade -- have been Japan-exclusive spin-off junk for mobile phones. Still, to have the gall to call it Breath of Fire 6, right? Right now it looks like a casual, tap-based Maple Story. Let's not judge a breath of fire by its ability to light up our excitement gauges, I guess. Maybe it will be wonderful.

Or maybe this is much needed spiritual closure: the funeral pyre for the death of Breath of Fire.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2 coming to 3DS in Japan

Posted: 31 Jul 2013 11:00 PM PDT

Foolishly, one of the bigger reasons I wanted to pick up a 3DS was for the remake of a Gameboy Color favorite, Dragon Warrior Monsters (Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland in Japan). Unfortunately, Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D came out in Japan almost a year ago now and a Western release doesn't seem to be in the slime.

Meanwhile, Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Iru and Luca’s Wonderful Mysterious Keys, a remake of what we will, for simplicity, refer to by the stateside name of Dragon Warrior Monsters 2, has been announced for 3DS. In Japan, obviously. There is a website and everything.

First Japan hoards one of the cooler 3DS models (one which would have seen me purchasing a 3DS two and a half years ago), now it continues to hoard Dragon Warrior Monster goodness. Fine. It's not like I need another lengthy time sink in my life anyway.

According to Gematsu, it "will have over 800 monsters, including new ones from Dragon Quest X, “Super G Size” monsters, and four-on-four monster battles. It will support local and internet correspondence, StreetPass, one save slot, and eight person multiplayer." Sounds fun. Uhm, I mean, it's not like I wanted you, or anything. Did you?

Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions coming to PSOne classics

Posted: 31 Jul 2013 08:00 PM PDT

An ESRB listing has revealed that Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions is heading to the PSOne classics category on PlayStation Network. It will be playable on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and the PlayStation Portable.

Sure, this already was available for those that got Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection, but now anyone will be able to pick this one up without having to buy the entire bundle. No word on price yet.

Arkham Origins on Wii U lacks multiplayer, naturally

Posted: 31 Jul 2013 07:00 PM PDT

Wii U is looking pretty down in the dumps. Maybe some quality software in the near future will cheer it right back up. Perhaps a little Batman: Arkham Origins -- I hear it's got multiplayer now.

Well, it does on every platform that's not Wii U. In a statement to Eurogamer, a Warner Bros. rep said of the exclusion, "MP will be available for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. The team is focusing development efforts on platforms with the largest MP audience."

I... I'm not even mad anymore. I've read so many bad stories about the Wii U that I've lost the energy to get mad. The constant stream of negativity is just too much. Even writing this makes me feel icky. This is why I prefer to post goofy YouTube vids and Mega Man shizz over "real" news.

Maybe Warner Bros. will throw Wii U owners a bone and make Arkham Origins on Wii U $10 cheaper than other platforms in lieu of a portion of the game. Or not.

This first-person Dark Souls mod is neat but unwieldy

Posted: 31 Jul 2013 06:00 PM PDT

File this one under "Nice idea that needs work." Soul Slasher on YouTube has uploaded a video runthrough of Dark Souls in a first-person view and it's, well, a bit on the disorienting side. There's also the whole lack-of-limbs thing. Clearly, the game was never intended to be played like this, but taking that into consideration, I like the attempt.

I'm thankful From Software went with a third-person perspective even if it would be nice to see the studio revisit gameplay more in line with King's Field.
