A pirate Assassin parkoured his way through SDCC Posted: 31 Jul 2013 04:00 PM PDT Ubisoft brought a giant pirate ship with them to San Diego Comic-Con. So I'm super glad someone thought of doing some crazy antics with the ship while dressed up as Edward Kenway, hero of Assassin's Creed IV. As fun as the video was to watch, I was more concerned for the camera guy featured in the behind the scenes video. Running through crowds and focusing a camera on someone isn't easy!
PS4 and Xbox One specs compared using equivalent PCs Posted: 31 Jul 2013 03:30 PM PDT On paper, Sony's PlayStation 4 has 50% more rendering power than Microsoft's Xbox One. How will that translate to real-world performance? How will multiplatform games be affected? The people must know, and they must know now! Ever the instigator, Digital Foundry has decided to temporarily sate gamers' technolust by creating a set of completely hypothetical spec comparisons. Using PCs with equivalent guts to the two upcoming consoles, DF ran a few games, such as Tomb Raider and Crysis 3, to see how well the machines could maintain a high frame rate. Some numbers are tossed around, big words are used, and an early hypothesis is drawn. My opinion? It looks like we'll have another PS3 / Xbox 360 situation on our hands -- the PlayStation performance boost is not as drastic and some have made it out to be. I predict multiplatform games will be more or less identical, but that won't stop certain gamers from splitting hairs and claiming unequivocal superiority. I'll never understand those people. Check the Eurogamer link below for two more video comparisons. In Theory: Can Xbox One multi-platform games compete with PlayStation 4? [Eurogamer]
Hadron's Forge features asteroid mining, real elements Posted: 31 Jul 2013 03:00 PM PDT Minecraft in space isn't exactly an original idea. StarForge showed up last year with impressive technology to back up that basic conceit and a greater focus on combat. Hadron's Forge starts with some of the same ideas: collect minerals, build living structures, explore the universe. What makes Hadron's Forge unique in a galaxy full of sci-fi Minecraft clones is that it is being developed by a couple of former aerospace engineers, which is manifesting itself with more realistic gameplay components. For instance, players will mine real chemical elements, with their hoards catalogued in the Periodic Table of Elements. Hadron's Forge promises several modes, including story mode, survival mode, and sandbox mode. No release date has been given, but developer Arcane Logic is currently taking pre-sales and accepting applications for beta testers.
| SDCC-exclusive UDON books up for pre-order August 1 Posted: 31 Jul 2013 02:30 PM PDT San Diego Comic-Con came and went, and despite my best efforts to use the Dtoid team to my own ends, I was unable to score the coveted hardcover edition of MM25. Thanks a lot, DALE! But no worries! UDON promised that all its event-exclusive books would be available for purchase on its online store. True to its word, you will be able to pre-order any of the six volumes beginning tomorrow, August 1, at 12:00 PM EST. Once again, the items up for grabs are The Art of Brutal Legend ($79.99), MM25: Mega Man & Mega Man X Official Complete Works ($99.99), Street Fighter Origins: Akuma ($39.99), Street Fighter Classic Volume 1 ($59.99), Super Street Fighter Volume 1: New Generations ($39.99), and World of Warcraft Tribute ($99.99). These are all limited edition hardcover printings; cheaper standard versions will be available later this year if they aren't already. Get your clicking fingers ready! | Obsidian reveals its plan for potential KOTOR III Posted: 31 Jul 2013 02:00 PM PDT Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords was a stellar Star Wars RPG that shone despite its bugs and rushed production schedule. It left me wanting to a sequel and, speaking to Eurogamer, Obsidian's Chris Avellone also harbored further plans for the crew of the Ebon Hawk. Knights of the Old Republic III actually existed in pre-production at Obsidian but it never made it past the pitch process. Obsidian's Chris Avellone says that "it felt like we were pitching and pitching and it just wasn't going anywhere, and at some point people just drew a line and said 'it's just not going to happen.'" I had never considered the KOTOR games to be part of a potential trilogy but Avellone confirmed that the plan was to have "The Exile" from KOTOR II potentially meeting Revan from KOTOR I and finding "the true Sith Lords." But enough of all that, what of HK-47, one of the best supporting characters in an RPG ever? "At one point HK-47, its legs dismantled, would "ride around in your backpack," Chris explains "like C-3PO does with Chewbacca in Empire Strikes Back." Brilliant! The best parts of KOTOR II were when your crew began expanding and you felt like you were making a really close-knit group. I'd love to see KOTOR III happen but if it never does, I'm glad that there's mods like The Sith Lords Content Mod that can help me squeeze every last bit of goodness from the game. | Star Wars: Battlefront expected in summer 2015 Posted: 31 Jul 2013 01:30 PM PDT Electronic Arts CFO Blake Jorgensen stated during a investor call today that they expect to release Star Wars: Battlefront “alongside the new Star Wars films, probably in summer 2015.” Not much, but at least we have a good idea of how long the wait will be now. Remember, EA DICE is behind this, so we can expect good things from it. Hopefully it will have its own identity to separate itself from the Battlefield series, but then again it's not such a bad thing if it goes the other way. | A Super Meat Boy movie? Here's the hilarious, shady pitch Posted: 31 Jul 2013 01:00 PM PDT It's hard to imagine what, exactly, a Super Meat Boy movie would look like -- but I'll go out on a limb and say it's probably for the best that such an adaptation never happens. Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes of Team Meat seem to agree. After being contacted by a man who wanted some money to get the ball rolling on a feature film, the pair realized that they had an opportunity to play along for our enjoyment. Here's a nearly 50-minute recording of their second call with the guy. Listen for a few moments and you'll see where this is going. The dude called it "Super Meat Head: The Movie," for eff's sake. Hahaha. Team Meat Troll A "Producer" Who Wants To Make "Super Meat Boy: The Movie" [Indie Statik] |
The Amazon from Dragon's Crown looks GROSS as a figure Posted: 31 Jul 2013 12:30 PM PDT OH GOD MY EYES KILL IT WITH FIRE! [Update: These figures on display are garage kits, so it's all fan made stuff. For official figures, including the Amazon, take a look at this gallery.] Yeah, the Dragon's Crown characters don't really work out all the well in toy form. At least the Amazon anyway. Thankfully, there's a bunch of other gaming related toys that look great. These images are from our sister site Tomopop, where they're covering Wonder Festival 2013. I'm most impressed the by the Skullgirls, Silent Hill 3, and Persona figures. My favorites are below, but you can check out the full gallery over on Tomopop.

Head to the African Mines with DuckTales Remastered Posted: 31 Jul 2013 11:30 AM PDT DuckTales Remastered is nearly here, and Capcom has done a good job so far of showing off the game's redone HD visuals. If you've been keeping track, Capcom has already revealed The Amazon, The Himalayas, and Transylvania -- and now, we have footage of the African Mines. Like all of the newly minted stages so far, it looks very familiar, but I'm loving the new coat of paint -- and the classic level theme. For all the retro fans out there -- that's four of the five classic levels that Capcom has revealed so far. Of course they would wait until the very last second to show The Moon level trailer, which is the one everyone is waiting for!
SOE Live will be streamed, Everquest NEXT to be unveiled Posted: 31 Jul 2013 11:15 AM PDT Second wives, prepare your divorce papers: Everquest Next is being unveiled this week. Sony Online Entertainment kicks off their annual "SOE Live" game expo at 7pm tomorrow in Las Vegas, and I can barely keep my dark elven pants on from the excitement. The event opens its doors to the public on August 2 and runs through the 4th. Online ticket sales have sold out, but you can still register at the door for $169 or catch the action via Twitch.tv/SOE. EQ fans have been waiting to see this game since its announcement in 2010, and I'm chief among them. Besides Everquest Next, we're sure to see new developments to DC Universe Online, Planetside 2, Dragon's Prophet, Everquest 2, and other upcoming SOE titles. In a press release SOE President John Smedley declared that EverQuest Next will be something, "the MMO world has never seen before". We're excited to learn if this statement holds water, as the franchise's shine has lost its luster in the wake of more contemporary MMO's like World of Warcraft. Will /pizza rise again? Do you have any questions for the SOE Live team? Destructoid will be on location talking to developers and spending some hands-on time with the games. I hear there will also be a costumed pool party happening, so I'll be on location photographing all the elves (read: hairy bellied men) for your awkward home enjoyment. Check out the schedule below:
Listings for XCOM: Enemy Within have popped up Posted: 31 Jul 2013 11:00 AM PDT XCOM: Enemy Unknown was a nice jolt to the system. You don't come to truly appreciate (virtual) life until you take it one step at a time, fearful that any moment could be your prized soldier's last. The sense of sheer dread felt both during battles and back at your base can be debilitating, but the payoff is all the more satisfying as a result. And the game sold well enough for Take-Two to call it a "commercial success." Who could've guessed? Of course, this can only mean that more XCOM will inevitably be on the way. Yeah, we've got The Bureau coming from 2K Marin, but how's about some more turn-based strategy in the vein of Enemy Unknown? When a listing for something called "XCOM: Enemy Within" appears on the Steam database and on the South Korean classification board's website -- it's listed for PlayStation 3, PC, and Xbox 360 -- that's immediately where my mind goes. Please don't be wishful thinking. XCOM Enemy Within listings spotted [CVG]
Live show: Solstice Arena with Team Solstice Posted: 31 Jul 2013 10:30 AM PDT [Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.] While I've been known to have a love-hate relationship with the MOBA genre, I do occasionally become a fan of, and get addicted to certain titles here and there, the latest being Solstice Arena. What makes this mobile game any different from the rest you ask? Well, it's main draw is that it's being billed as the the worlds first speed MOBA. The easiest way to explain what that means would be to say, it's kind of like the NBA Jam of the MOBA scene. Quick matches, no grinding, a lot of fighting, and tons of fast paced fun. Come by and check it out for yourself as we sit down with some of the development team tonight on Mash Tactics. Also, we have a special treat for our viewers this week, as each day we'll be giving out a pair of sweet gaming glasses from our good friends at Gamers Edge Eyewear. Check out our side-by-side review, then get over to Dtoid.TV for further details on how you can win one of these stylish bad-boys for yourself! QotD: What is your favorite mobile game?
Oculus Rift + stationary bike + Kinect = Paperboy Posted: 31 Jul 2013 10:00 AM PDT Globacore has combined a stationary bike, the Oculus Rift, and the Kinect to create PaperDude VR, an homage to Paperboy. The video here shows off the game in action, and holy crap do I want this. It's probably not a good idea to throw actual newspapers when you play the game though.
There's a little Hotline Miami in Payday 2 Posted: 31 Jul 2013 09:30 AM PDT There's a special homage to Hotline Miami in Payday 2! You can purchase a pig mask called "The Hog" and it has some familiar sounding text associated with it too. Yeah that's about it. Just a neat little thing. Anyway, we're pretty excited for Payday 2, as are all of you! The latest look at Payday 2 gives us the basics on what each playable character brings in order to help pull off a successful heist. Of course, you can learn way more by checking out our hands-on preview of the game.
A Kingdom Under Fire cosplay that will blow your mind Posted: 31 Jul 2013 09:00 AM PDT Welcome to our new regular column showcasing some of the world's most amazing videogame and other geek centric cosplays (costume play). To kick it off, we're going mostly old-school with a stunning Princess Zelda, feisty Street Fighters, a serene Tifa Lockheart, and a downright disturbing Alice. Not to keep it completely retro though, we also have a look at one of my favorite new characters of this generation: a brilliant Nilin worth remembering from Capcom's sci-fi thriller Remember Me. Perhaps the most elaborate cosplay of the week goes to a character from a MMO I've never even heard of based on the Kingdom Under Fire universe. The armor work and intricate detail on each sword for Age of Storms' Elyuin is utterly ridiculous. Follow this link for in-game footage of the actual character to see just how accurate the cosplay is. Also if you have any spectacular cosplays you'd like to show off here, send them in to tips@destructoid.com Until next time!
Now Bloody Playing: Aliens: Stasis Interrupted Part 4 Posted: 31 Jul 2013 08:30 AM PDT In the thrilling conclusion to a rubbish playthrough of a boring campaign, the noble Jim Sterling fights his way through Stasis Interrupted, fighting more Weyland Yutani mercs, having a close encounter with an alien Queen, and giving up on the last bit because it's dumb. It was going on far too long anyway.
MineCon 2013 tickets go on sale today Posted: 31 Jul 2013 08:00 AM PDT MineCon is taking place in Orlando Florida this year, and will be held at the Orange County Convention Center from November 2-3. Tickets are $150, and you'll be able to buy six tickets in one order. Plus, kids three and under can get in for free. Tickets will be on sale in three different batches, with each containing 2500 tickets. The first batch goes on sale today at 4PM PDT. The next batch will go on sale on August 2 at 7AM PDT, and the last batch will be available on August 3 at 12PM. Mojang is spreading out the tickets in an effort to "be fair to people who have jobs or school and those with different schedules." PAX and San Diego Comic-Con could learn a thing or two from the way Mojang is handling this process. MINECON tickets are here! [Mojang]
Current headsets will work on Xbox One with an adapter Posted: 31 Jul 2013 07:30 AM PDT When Microsoft revealed that the Xbox One controller would have a new port designed for improved data transfer speed, owners of high-end headsets wondered if their pricey investment would soon be rendered obsolete. It looks like that won't necessarily be the case, but it'll cost a bit extra regardless. Albert Penello, an Xbox employee, confirmed via Twitter that Microsoft is building an adapter that will bridge the gap between current and next generation headsets. He didn't mention how much it'll cost or when it'll be available -- only that it'll be an accessory, meaning that it likely won't come packaged with the Xbox One. Even if there's an additional investment, it's much better than the alternative of buying an entirely new headset. Although Microsoft's building the proprietary adapter, I wouldn't be surprised if companies like Astro are working on a third-party one that might come a bit cheaper for consumers. @albertpenello [Twitter]
Posted: 31 Jul 2013 07:00 AM PDT Dragon's Crown has had an ... interesting development cycle over the past few years, to say the least. After controversy sparked due to the art style Vanillaware has been employing for over a decade now, many people began to wonder if there was actually a game under the distinct, polarizing art style. But you won't find any controversy here. At long last, Dragon's Crown is finally out, and we can judge it on its own merits -- as a videogame. And it's fantastic.
Guacamelee: Gold Edition comes to Steam on August 8 Posted: 31 Jul 2013 06:30 AM PDT Guacamelee! on the PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Vita was a wonderful experience. Well now all you people on the computers can finally see what was so great about it come August 8. Guacamelee: Gold Edition will cost $14.99/€13.99/£11.99, but if you buy the game in the first week it's available on Steam you'll get a 10% discount. Oh, and you'll get the excellent Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack! for free too. That's two whole games, people! Gold Edition will also offer new features. There's a new level expansion called "El Infierno" and it's set inside the offices of the Devil's domain. Plus there's new costumes that change player abilities, Steam Trading Cards, and Steam Workshop support where you can modify character skins and upload them to the Steam community. So for instance, you can totally play as Mr. Destructoid, as seen in the images here! We'll have the skin uploaded to the Steam Workshop in fact.
Crackdown, Dead Rising 2, and Case Zero free on Xbox Live Posted: 31 Jul 2013 06:00 AM PDT With July nearly over, it's time for the next set of free Xbox Live games to be swapped in. Following Assassin's Creed II, the Games With Gold titles for August 1 are Crackdown, Dead Rising: Case Zero, and Dead Rising 2. These will be free through August 15 for Gold subscribers. While it's a bit dated now, Crackdown was one of the early reasons to own an Xbox 360 and it's very much worth checking out today. Just be ready to start picturing the game's orbs in real life after a while. As for Dead Rising 2, yeah, of course -- grab it! Interestingly, I never really got into the original Dead Rising until I played Case Zero on a whim. This bit of prologue content was a great way to break into the series' time-based structure in a low-risk environment, and it got me to both enjoy the sequel and go back to give the first game a proper chance. Highly recommended if you've been in a similar situation. Games with Gold for August: Crackdown, Dead Rising 2 & DR2: Case Zero [Major Nelson]
Facebook is now a mobile game publisher too Posted: 31 Jul 2013 05:30 AM PDT Facebook has announced a new mobile gaming publishing program. They're looking for small and medium-sized developers in order to "take their mobile games global." So far Facebook has ten developers on board, though TechCrunch is reporting that there are some big studios involved too, such as Gameloft with their game called Kingdom & Lords. It's damn near hard cracking the top of the charts, especially when a lot of what you see out there dominating is based on luck, to a degree. The idea is for Facebook to be able to help these indies when it comes to promotions and the like by helping with the ads and analytics. Otherwise they're going to remain hands-off when it comes to actually developing the games. Facebook Announces New Mobile Game Publishing Effort [TechCrunch]
Posted: 31 Jul 2013 05:00 AM PDT When Nintendo saw what "realistic polygon-powered graphics" were possible on the GameCube/Xbox/PS2, their first instinct wasn't to make a game about human beings doing crimes, saving the world, or even talking to each other. It does not seem that Hollywood-style activities are in Nintendo's DNA. Instead, they came out swinging with a game about harvesting little carrot people born to die selflessly in battle against giant cute/ugly wildlife in a lush, bustling wilderness. On the surface, there isn't much here that resembles the "realistic life experiences." Scratch that surface and you'll see that underlying concepts of Pikmin are all too "real." Balancing concern for others vs. self-centered greed, experiencing the frailty that comes from accepting the inevitable passage of time, and facing the anxiety that comes from voyaging out on your own are the core components that make this series tick. Basically, it's adult life in videogame form -- specifically the life of a boss.
Get acquainted with Splinter Cell's Merc and Spy Posted: 31 Jul 2013 04:30 AM PDT One of my favorite multiplayer modes of all time is returning to Splinter Cell: Blacklist in the form of Spies vs. Mercs, and these two new videos will give you a rundown of each class. If you're itching for information, Community Developer Zack Cooper and Level Design Director Geoff Ellenor have provided extensive 10 minute videos detailing pretty much everything you could ask for, including general tactics, loadouts, and more. Provided the online community stays put for a while, I think this is going to be my go-to game for the next few years, as this is shaping up to look pretty amazing.
Deal time: Grand Theft Auto IV is $9.99 on Xbox Live Posted: 31 Jul 2013 04:00 AM PDT This week you can grab Grand Theft Auto IV for just $9.99 on Xbox Live (normally $19.99). The expansions are also on sale, with The Lost and Damned going for 400 MS Points (normally 800 MS Points), and The Ballad of Gay Tony will run you 800 MS Points (normally 1600 MS Points). Kind of lame they're still charging that much for Ballad of Gay Tony, but a good price for the core game if you have some points to burn.
New Pokemon trailer shows off in-game Aurotto Posted: 31 Jul 2013 03:30 AM PDT New footage has emerged for Pokemon X and Y, and it shows off a new creature. After a quick look at the new blue 3DS XL, you'll get re-acquainted with the game's starters, as well as world exploration, horde combat, and even the in-game model of Aurotto, which was previously just shown as concept art. With all of the information and footage we have of Pokemon X and Y, I'm just ready for October to come already.
This Dragon's Crown launch trailer is pure gameplay Posted: 31 Jul 2013 03:00 AM PDT Dragon's Crown is nearly here after launching in Japan just this week, and Atlus has dropped the game's launch trailer, which consists entirely of gameplay. Although the video does a great job of explaining some of the game's core mechanics, it does ruin a number of boss fights -- so if you want to go in blind, avoid it! If you want more, stay tuned for the full review coming up later this afternoon in addition to a launch day tips guide, or check out my preview.
Titanfall will be playable to the public at gamescom Posted: 31 Jul 2013 02:30 AM PDT Electronic Arts will be at gamescom in a big way this year, and they're bringing a big lineup of games that people can get hands-on with. The most notable being Titanfall, our game of the show for E3. Fans can also play Battlefield 4, Command & Conquer, FIFA 14, The Sims 4, and Need for Speed Rivals. They'll have a bunch of mobile titles there too, but weird there was no mention of Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare. That's really good too! For everyone not going to gamescom, you can watch EA's press conference set to take place on August 20 at 3PM BST. We'll of course be at gamescom ourselves and will be bringing you coverage from the show.
Blizzard hosting a press conference at gamescom Posted: 31 Jul 2013 02:00 AM PDT Blizzard is set to host a press conference at gamescom this year on August 21 at 11:30AM, and that's the only real specifics we were given. Blizzard did tease us by stating that this announcement is "sure to capture the attention of the Heavens, Burning Hells and all the shadowed places that lie between." Wonder what it can be! Probably related to Diablo III, as it's on the horizon for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. The last time Blizzard gave a press conference was at gamescom 2011 where they talked about World of Warcraft, StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm and Diablo III. Blizzard won't be livestreaming the press conference, but we'll be there covering it for Destructoid because we love you. We really do.
The Wii U is doing really bad, 3DS is doing great Posted: 31 Jul 2013 01:30 AM PDT Nintendo's latest earnings have come in an overall things aren't that bad looking for the company. They had a positive net return with ¥8.62 billion ($88 million) this last quarter. Nintendo is forecasting its net profit to increase to ¥55 billion ($563 million) by the end of the fiscal year. So here's the bad news. The Wii U moved 160,000 consoles around the world between April 1 and June 30. 90,000 in Japan, 60,000 in the US, and 10,000 across Europe and Australia. Ouch. This bring total lifetime sales up to 3.61 million now. Meanwhile, the Wii moved 210,000 in the same time period. This also helped finally hit 100 million Wiis sold worldwide, by the way. Good news is that the 3DS is doing great! It was the best selling hardware the last two months in a row here in the US, and has moved 1.4 million units this quarter. Software wise, just over one million games were shipped in this same quarter on the Wii U, while the 3DS saw over 11 million software units moved. The biggest contributing factors have been Animal Crossing: New Leaf moving 5.4 million, and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon moving 2.65 million.
Batman: Arkham Origins multiplayer mode revealed Posted: 31 Jul 2013 01:00 AM PDT A common pattern for when a successful single-player IP has turned into a series is to tack on a multiplayer bit of some form. Unfortunately, when this happens, the multiplayer portion is often a half-assed attempt thrown in simply to appeal to a key demographic. Usually this portion is handled by a separate studio to varying degrees of success, and may have little relation to the main game.
Take-Two fiddles around with a Bully trademark Posted: 31 Jul 2013 12:00 AM PDT Bully is one of my favorite Rockstar games of all time. Although it blew up release, it's fairly unheard of today, amidst praise for Red Dead Redemption and the latest GTA game. But that may change, as Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has filed a new trademark for Bully related media on July 25th. We've heard talk of a Bully sequel before, and hopefully that talk will become reality on the next generation of consoles. If you're interested in checking out the original sometime, it's constantly on sale on Steam for under $10. Take-Two [GameSpot]
| The tale of Final Fantasy VI in kickass fresco form Posted: 30 Jul 2013 10:00 PM PDT If you love videogame art, it would be criminal not to know who Mikaël "Orioto" Aguirre is. He is a French digital artist known for his spectacular renderings of notable videogame scenes painted using the brush of the gods. You've no doubt seen some of his work before even if you don't recognize him by name. In fact, I use this sparkling number as the wallpaper for my mp3 player! His most recent masterpiece is an assembly of several key events in Final Fantasy VI. Created in 120 hours over the course of two months, it contains references to the prologue, the Ultros battle, Locke's rescue of Celes, the famous Opera scene, and more. And this is just the first part of a three-piece set! Madness! If you want to purchase a print of this awesome sauce, you can order it from here, but you only have until September 2. Orioto previously sold prints of similar frescoes for Quackshot and Sonic the Hedgehog. Not anymore, regrettably! At least there are still other works you can buy. | This one guy is making a sci-fi RTS and it looks good Posted: 30 Jul 2013 08:00 PM PDT Meridian: New World has been in development for two years. The single-player, story-focused sci-fi strategy game slated to release next year comes courtesy of Elder Games, which is actually just one guy, Ede Tarsoly. Check a full features dump below. The optional alternative paths to victory sound nice. Apparently, you can "take the covert approach and sabotage the enemy power supply to shut down their production," "rely entirely on researching superior weapons or special abilities," or "risk building a large economy, constructing a massive army from your enormous resources." I don't typically play real-time strategy games, so I'll likely not ever get to Meridian, but you've got to be impressed by this one-man effort. Plus, the protagonist's name is Daniel Hanson, which is a typo away from being a pretty cool name, you know? Of course, as good as it looks, where the game will sink or swim is with the game design and balancing. But, for the time being, let's be hopeful. |
Get your box off with Real Boxing on Vita Posted: 30 Jul 2013 07:00 PM PDT The mobile title Real Boxing is coming to PlayStation Vita next month, August 27. Its press release boasts it is the, "first console-style boxing simulation for the PlayStation Vita" and has newly featured, "console-style multiplayer." This amuses me to no end because it's a mobile game being ported to a handheld. Is it just me, or do all those right and left hooks look really weird? Like spaghetti elbows as the shoulder dislocates itself for each punch. See, someone was clearly onto a neat idea early in development. I think this was meant to be a Stretch Armstrong game. It was to be his triumphant comeback, like Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler. Alas, while I would've preferred Unreal Boxing -- as in some sort of exaggerated and comical fighting game, not just an Unreal engine powered one -- I know this sort of thing has its audience. It's been a while since Fight Night. Even if this reminds me a bit more of The Fight: Lights Out. Oh well. It's $10 and could be fun.
| UK Pokemon trainers get a Pokeball with X & Y pre-order Posted: 30 Jul 2013 06:00 PM PDT Are you an avid Pokéfan looking for the best way to tote your dazzling collection of Pokémon games around? Well, UK retailer GAME has you covered, as Pokémon X/Y pre-orders come with an honest to goodness, physical Pokéball with a detachable base. Neat. I rather liked when pre-order gifts were stupid kitschy garbage that would accumulate like dust rather than downloadable perks. Too bad these balls don't seem to be coming stateside. Nuts to us, I guess. It testes my patience a bit, but the UK gets shafted often enough themselves, so I can't be too hard on them. UK readers, what are you going to fill your balls with? Probably something illicit enough to tarnish Pokemon's good, family name, knowing you guys. What would fit in there? Maybe honey. Or a baby hamster. | PSA: Save a buck on Bioshock Infinite's first DLC Posted: 30 Jul 2013 05:30 PM PDT Pinch them pennies! The acclaimed Bioshock Infinite's first bit of DLC, Clash in the Clouds, dropped today. The arena-based combat mode is quite the shooty affair and a precursor to something that seems decidedly more interesting, the upcoming Burial at Sea. The latter is a return to Bioshock's Rapture at the downfall. It's also film noir styled and lets you play as Elizabeth. So down. For the bloodthirsty, however, the $5 Clash in the Clouds, which our own Caitlin Cooke previewed today, seems pretty solid. If nothing else, it's a decent excuse to go remind yourself how pretty Infinite is. Plus, shrewd readers can save an entire US dollar on the affair, thanks to Dealzon peeping this GameFly coupon code. Plus, if you don't have Infinite yet, it's down to $30 on Amazon (PC download), half the current Steam list price. You'd practically be losing money if you don't buy it! |
The Daily Hotness: Bioshocking Posted: 30 Jul 2013 04:59 PM PDT Confession time! I still haven't had time to play Bioshock Infinite. Lame. Less lame is that today Caitlin Cooke previewed Bioshock Infinite's first DLC, Clash in the Clouds, and interviewed Irrational's Ken Levine about the upcoming DLC, Burial at Sea, which features a return to Rapture. It's also heavily film noir styled; or, exactly what I want to play always. Welp. Maybe I'll just skip Infinite and at least play Burial at Sea. Today, the indomitable Patrick Hancock reviewed Teleglitch: Die More Edition and gave his impressions of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, Earthbound's director talked candidly and poignantly about his game, and more!
