| A new Mortal Kombat is in development, apparently Posted: 29 Jul 2013 03:00 PM PDT Nothing against Injustice: Gods Among Us, but it sure would be nice to see NetherRealm Studios back on another Mortal Kombat game before long. Mortal Kombat Legacy producer Lance Sloane had this to say about the upcoming feature film and where a new game -- which is apparently happening, no big deal -- would fit in: "Well, we've been in greenlight committee for a while at the studio and we've got a great script," he told GamerHub.TV. "And we've got a great director with Kevin Tancharoen, who is on board. It's just figuring out the business side of it and when we would do it and when we would launch it and how do we sync up with the launch of the game that they're working on now. It's not 100% yet, but we're getting closer every day." Mortal Kombat 9 only made it to PC this month, so I'll try to be patient. I can't believe I'm about to say this but, more than anything, it's probably the story that I most want to see continued. | Saints Row IV still refused classification in Australia Posted: 29 Jul 2013 02:00 PM PDT I thought this all got fixed but apparently Australia's ratings board still has decided to refuse classification for Saints Row IV for the second time. A conveining of a Review Board found that the original ruling by the Classification board from June was correct and that the upcoming title from Volition would still be refused classification. Shortly after the announcement, a "low-violence" version of Saints Row IV was uncovered on Steam which points to Volition making a different version that would have a better chance of getting through Australia's rating system. It's been a similar situation with games like Left 4 Dead 2 in the past but let's be honest, the violence is Saints Row is cartoonish, silly, and over the top; I have a hard time seeing lots of dildo bat copycat crimes engulfing Australia. Still, a lower violence version may see the game come to Aussie shores which is better than nothing, I suppose. You know what would make things better? If there was some online service, say Steam or something like that, where you could "gift" an Australian a copy of a game not available in their own country. Maybe said Australian could gift their international buddy a game of the same value as thanks. Hmmmm..... Saints Row IV refused classification in Australia... again [All Games Beta] |
| SOE opens up item creation in PlanetSide 2 Posted: 29 Jul 2013 01:00 PM PDT While item creation doesn't necessarily fit with every game, I look forward to a future where more online games adopt the Team Fortress 2 model or some approximation of it. Let users create assets that can be sold in a marketplace -- it makes them happy, obviously, and it gives us what is often professional-quality, creative stuff. The developer gets a nice cut of the revenue, too. It's for these reasons and more that I'm glad to see Sony Online Entertainment add support for Player Studio to its massively multiplayer first-person shooter PlanetSide 2. You'll be able to create decals, hood ornaments, camo patterns, vehicle canopy overlays, and helmets under the system. For those lucky items that do get featured on the marketplace, SOE will take a 60 percent cut of revenues earned, with checks going out every quarter to the creator. There's a dedicated site over here that explains the basics, if you're keen to break out the modeling software. |
| Posted: 29 Jul 2013 12:00 PM PDT High fantasy, cyberpunk, and film noir collide in a way that makes you think they were meant for each other all along in Harebrained Schemes' appropriately, if not imaginatively, titled Shadowrun Returns. Based on the popular tabletop role-playing game -- which also spawned console adaptations in the early '90s -- it subverts and defies genre expectations in both theme and mechanics, and most importantly allows you to create a troll samurai with a penchant for hacking and shooting people in the face. Eschewing the loot-filled, exposition-heavy tropes prevalent in the RPG genre, Shadowrun Returns spins a tightly woven tale of conspiracy and revenge where more time is spent engaged in nuanced dialogue and tactical combat than perusing shops and browsing menus. The short but compelling campaign merely serves as an example of what the title offers; under the hood, there's so much more. |
| PAX Prime 2013's PAX 10 games have been announced Posted: 29 Jul 2013 11:30 AM PDT One of my favorite parts about PAX Prime since 2008 has been the PAX 10 indie game showcase. Over 100 games were submitted to be judged upon by a panel of experts, and the following ten games have been declared the best of the best.
Some of these are pretty well-known around the indie game community, while others are a bit more obscure. While I already know that Gunpoint, Ridiculous Fishing, and Rogue Legacy are all great, I'm looking forward to getting my hands on all of these. Sokobond looks particularly interesting, but mostly because I may have an unfair advantage in a game about chemistry. |
| Live show: Mario Kart Wii online shenanigans Posted: 29 Jul 2013 10:30 AM PDT [Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.] So, have you ever bought a game on release day, only to play it for a mere couple of hours then have it collect dust on your shelf for the next two years? Well, that's my situation with Mario Kart Wii, and I'm aiming to fix that this evening on Mash Tactics. If you have the game and are looking to play, be sure to come by the show, grab my friend code, and join in on all of the trolling, erm, I mean, manic karting action! | Media Molecule moves Tearaway into November Posted: 29 Jul 2013 09:30 AM PDT Media Molecule's anticipated 3D platformer Tearaway is taking a bit longer to wrap up than originally expected. The studio announced a one-month delay today, pushing the papercraft PlayStation Vita title all the way back to November 22, 2013. This is good news if the end result is a better game -- especially when Tearaway could end up being among the best Vita games of the year -- but darn if the revised release doesn't cut into the busiest season made even crazier by the launch of two new consoles. In the meantime, we can all make some papercraft while we wait. Well, you can -- I'm terrible at this stuff. Tearaway Release Date Update [PlayStation Blog] |
| GOG: Indies, nostalgia, and the evils of DRM Posted: 29 Jul 2013 09:00 AM PDT It took a long time for me to be comfortable with digital distribution. I held onto my dusty boxes and physical media with grim determination, seeing no reason for me to move with the times. It was Space Quest that changed all that. I'd lost my discs filled with the adventures of space janitor Roger Wilco years before, but when I realized that I could simply download every single one of them and start playing them mere minutes later, I started to become a convert. That was many years ago, and now -- between plaforms like Steam and GOG -- I have almost 400 digital titles, and the last time I purchased a physical PC game, it was for an article I was writing about the experience of going back to a brick-and-mortar store. I want to emphasize this: I only bought the game for an experiment. GOG.com, once Good Old Games, started out by appealing to folk like myself. Those who wanted to dive into the classics and bygone titans of PC gaming, but it's transformed into something much larger: a huge digital platform promoting and selling bounties decades old next to modern indie titles, and all the time sticking to its anti-DRM principles. A year after its rebranding, I caught up with managing director Guillaume Rambourg, and some of the developers whose games feature on the site. |
| New releases: Force adorable Pikmin to kill, you monster Posted: 29 Jul 2013 08:45 AM PDT We're bidding farewell to an extremely hot July with a bang: Pikmin 3 is here, or it will be come Sunday. Of course, if you have the good fortune to be living in the UK or other, less important parts of Europe, then this is old news and you're probably already enslaving plant-folk and slaying beasties. As if a good game on the Wii U wasn't cause enough for celebration, Rise of the Triad is also dropping this week. I'm in the process of downloading it now, and as soon as I'm done informing you lovely people about this week's offerings, I'll be running around like a headless chicken, blowing shit up. What's making you quiver with anticipation this week? |

| Posted: 29 Jul 2013 08:15 AM PDT It's time to talk about why "optional" microtransactions in games aren't really optional, and why they're especially gruesome in games we already paid for at retail. The rise of "free to play" elements in games that are not free is going to become increasingly popular among major corporations, desperate as they are for "The Answer" to a splintering audience. While they are, on the surface, annoyances to be ignored, these fake freemium ideas change the way games are made and played, and that's not good for anyone. |
| Add 2,000 of your closest friends on PlayStation 4 Posted: 29 Jul 2013 08:00 AM PDT In a Q&A video from PlayStation Access, ex-Destructoid editor Hollie Bennett covers ten questions about the PS4. While you should be prepared to go over familiar territory if you've been scanning next-gen news Terminator-style, there are a few interesting tidbits in here. Most notably, the cap on the PlayStation Network friends list is set at 2,000 people which sounds like a lot, doesn't it? Worry not -- someone will find the limit to be overly restricted given enough time. We're also told that party chat won't require a PlayStation Plus membership, in case there was any confusion. Nice to hear that such a cherished feature won't be gated. [Thanks, Shinobi13] |
| Is Eternal Darkness coming to the Wii U eShop? Posted: 29 Jul 2013 07:30 AM PDT Precursor Games, a.k.a. the ghost of Silicon Knights, is still trying to get Shadow of the Eternals off the ground, hoping to attract Kickstarter backers with the promise of David Hayter's gravelly pipes. However you feel towards Shadow of the Eternals, I think everyone can at least agree that a re-release of its GameCube spiritual predecessor Eternal Darkness would be greatly appreciated. Siliconera has just stumbled upon a very interesting Eternal Darkness trademark that Nintendo filed on July 23. It looks similar to another trademark filed back in 2010, except this one has added language in the "goods and services" field that makes mention of "downloadable electronic game programs" and "downloadable electronic game software." This could point towards a potential Wii U eShop version of ED in the future. Nintendo never ruled out releasing GameCube games on its Virtual Console, but the company has yet to hammer out any further details. And since nothing was done with the older 2010 trademark, this could simply be Nintendo covering its bases. Either way, it's something to munch on. The 2013 and 2010 trademarks are in the gallery below, and you can pull them up for yourself on the US Patent and Trademark Office site by clicking "search for trademarks." | Here's how much Xbox One controllers and headsets cost Posted: 29 Jul 2013 07:00 AM PDT The Microsoft Store has priced a few accessories for the Xbox One, including controllers, headsets, and charge kits. The standard wireless controller will be $59.99, or $74.99 with a play-and-charge kit included. The charge kits are available standalone for $24.99, and the new headsets -- which aren't included with the console since Kinect is -- are also $24.99. Not exactly inexpensive, but that wasn't my expectation going in. Considering how much use my Xbox 360 gamepad gets for PC gaming, I'm curious to hear about compatibility details with these new ones. I'd be wiling to upgrade for that improved d-pad, I think. |
| Mega Man to get not one but TWO... nanoblock sets Posted: 29 Jul 2013 06:30 AM PDT Day 224 of Mega Man's 25th anniversary new game watch. No sign of movement on the horizon. No... wait... wait! Target in sight! Stations everyone! Stations! Magnify the image! More! More! It's... IT'S... just a pair of really, really small building block kits. False alarm, everyone. Capcom's latest appeal to game-starved fans are two nanoblock sets based on the Blue Bomber and Cut Man, each available for ¥1800 (~$18.39). For those unaware, nanoblock is a brand of unbelievably tiny building blocks that make LEGO bricks look like marble slabs. They are available in the US, so maybe these Mega Man kits will show up here as well. Know what I wish would show up here? I think you know the answer. e-Capcom Introduces Rockman Nanoblock Sets [The Mega Man Network] |
| Act natural: More Grand Theft Auto V screenshots Posted: 29 Jul 2013 06:00 AM PDT This new Grand Theft Auto V screenshot of Michael acting casual or whatever it is he's depicting doing here has some real potential to be used for Internet tomfoolery. I know you can't force these things into popularity but, dammit, I want to believe. Elsewhere in this latest batch from Rockstar, we're shown what Trevor looks like when he's happy -- it's a bit creepy, as expected -- more vehicles, and one of the trio jumping off a bridge. Yep, this is Grand Theft Auto. The studio is promising the multiplayer reveal for the game next month, presumably at gamescom. With proper aircraft support this time, I'm looking forward to it. | WonFes brings stunning Persona, Dragon's Crown figures Posted: 29 Jul 2013 05:30 AM PDT Wonder Festival kicked off over the weekend, giving us the first look at a deluge of new anime and videogame character figures that will be heading to market in the coming months. Our friends at Tomopop were in attendance at the show, providing extensive coverage on the latest and greatest collectible toys to be showcased in Chiba, Japan. Among the many high-end sculptures of familiar faces were a pair Dragon's Crown characters. The Elf and Amazon have been brought to life in rather spectacular fashion, beautifully recreating George Kamitani's gorgeous artwork in three dimensions. Other highlights include a delightful depiction of Labrys from Persona 4 Arena with her eponymous double-headed axe. Want to see more? | Skylanders Swap Force is surprisingly more fun than evil Posted: 29 Jul 2013 05:00 AM PDT Activision’s Skylanders franchise has always smelled of a money grab to me. Copperish, like the smell of old pennies scrounged up by hard-working parents so little Linda Anne can have all the newest and coolest Skylanders characters while mom and dad work three jobs amidst recession. Jim Sterling is rather partial to the plastic lot, however, so they can’t be all bad, right? In fact, they’re not. The new Skylanders: Swap Force is indeed rather cute and pretty fun. Vacuous, but quaint enough. Skylanders is videogames as toys; or, Toys: The Videogame. I guess I forgot that videogames practically were, once upon a time. It’s no less inane and gimmicky and capitalistic than the stupid garbage we pestered parents for 20 years ago, but it’s a heck of a lot more polished and less likely to break like the slot cars I took around hairpin turns too quickly causing them to go flying off the track. Plus, what can be more embarrassing than having paid money for pogs? |
| Get your shine box: Rare, legendary Pokemon giveaway Posted: 29 Jul 2013 04:30 AM PDT Still feel the urge to do some collecting as you wait for Pokemon X & Y? Well, slam close the stamp book because I've got you covered. Participating GameStop locations will be yielding shiny versions of legendaries Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina, starting August 19. All you need to do is show up with your DS and your Pokemon Black or White or Black 2 or White 2. So many options. Yet, apparently no one can hook me up if I show up with my launch DS and Pokemon Diamond, despite the fact that Dialga debuted in and is on the box of Diamond? Fine. Candian readers, hit up a participating EB Games on August 30, September 13, and September 27 for your shiny Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina. You get two late, one early. We'll be talking about the changes that have come to the way we talk about games, contending with AdBlock, and the rise of video coverage. We'll also be talking about how Destructoid itself has met these challenges. Niero Gonzalez, Hamza Aziz, Dale North, Jonathan Holmes and your old pal Jim Sterling will be on hand to talk about what we do, why we're doing it, and what we're doing in future. If you want to see your favorite robot's slaves at PAX Prime, you can witness our HUGE panel at 2pm on Sunday, at the Pegasus Theater during the show. See you there! |
| Did Yuna? Lightning Returns has a Final Fantasy X outfit Posted: 29 Jul 2013 03:30 AM PDT There's quite a bit of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII news afoot courtesy of All Games Beta. We now know Lightning Returns will feature four distinct areas, the newest revealed of which is a "vast, open-world area in vain of Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" in which you can ride Chocobos and generally gallivant around. I'm also quite interested in the first city where Lightning apparently is investigating a murder. Games tend to do investigation poorly, because failing would mean ruining progress and pacing, so it will be interesting to see if that bit is any fun. There will also be over 100 shop types. Talk about meeting your critics. It's like when Square was super excited to awkwardly show off the jump button in Final Fantasy XIII-2. "You wanted shops?" Square asks. "How about over a hundred different kinds," game director Motomu Toriyama screams from the rooftops while batting at fan requests flown in on paper airplanes. Speaking to the legitimately interesting "dress up" portion of the game, certain outfits allow you to alter the colors, while save data from previous games will grant access to Lightning's earlier outfits. On top of that, you can dress Lightning up in Yuna's summoner outfit from Final Fantasy X, which gives her a demure bow post-battle. I actually thought it was going to be Auron's garb given that her default clothes look similar. A bit less excited with this. Then again, I'm presently mildly less excited about the project as a whole after reading that sophomoric interview about increasing Lightning's bust and adding jiggle physics. Just let me be tentatively excited, Square! Since it seems everyone is fair game, any other outfits you'd like to see? I vote something from Final Fantasy XII. | Self-publishing available on Xbox 360 next month Posted: 29 Jul 2013 03:00 AM PDT Better late than never. Microsoft just recently flip-flopped and is allowing indie developers self-publish on the Xbox One. Today, Polygon picked up on another surprising twist, that Microsoft will begin allowing self-publishing on the Xbox 360, according to a newsletter from The Pinball Arcade developer FarSight Studios.
The Pinball Arcade's XBLA publisher Crave went kaput and forfeited its publishing license, causing trouble for the title and its team. According to FarSight, the new self-publishing system will debut in August, which could mean it will be announced at the end of the month at gamescom, where Microsoft promised to detail its Xbox One self-publishing set up. Seems like Microsoft is really trying to get back in our collective good graces. Given how little it has supported the 360 in its waning year, opening up the system for easier indie publishing could keep people playing their 360s longer and perhaps leave them more likely to buy an Xbox One. Meanwhile, this is just another step for Microsoft towards repairing its relationship with indie developers as a whole. Is this too little too late or better late than never? Self-publishing coming to Xbox 360 this August, says developer [Polygon] |

| Final Fantasy: All the Bravest merchandise f*cking exists Posted: 29 Jul 2013 01:30 AM PDT Final Fantasy: All the Bravest may well be the sleaziest, scummiest exploitation of a beloved videogame franchise this side of bootlegged Pikachu dolls. The "game" exists solely to leech cash from the "player," but Square Enix isn't done there. It's now compounding its shamelessness with official merchandise. Yes, you can get your very own set of All the Bravest keychains, for when you've run out of ways for Square Enix to fleece you in the award-winning iOS adventure masterpiece! There are 29 keychains in the set, featuring all your favorite characters, and it'll cost 11,020 yen to catch 'em all! Now if you'll excuse me, I must go be sick into a little bag. | I would totally play a first-person Sonic the Hedgehog Posted: 29 Jul 2013 12:30 AM PDT Many people who know me are aware that one of my favorite franchises of all time is Jumping Flash. There's something about the way those games handle first-person platforming that's just magical, and as an experience, it's pretty much pure bliss for me. So when this first-person Sonic the Hedgehog video surfaced, I couldn't help but smile. The setup is simple -- it's a re-imagining of the classic Green Hill Zone: Act 1 in a first-person perspective. They even have the overlay of the 2D version in the bottom right corner to compare it to! I don't know about you guys, but I would totally buy this.

| Lightning Returns director ordered bigger, jiggling boobs Posted: 29 Jul 2013 12:00 AM PDT Lightning's either experienced a miracle or paid for a boob job in Lightning Returns, bumping up from a Japanese C cup to a D Cup. Her breasts will also jiggle now, depending on what she's wearing, because the director wanted it that way. According to a Famitsu interview (nabbed by DualShockers), Motomu Toriyama "wanted it bigger" with regards to Lightning's chest, a fact he found funny when interviewed on the subject. Lighting -- who Square Enix wants us to believe is a strong female character -- gets her jiggle on with various costumes in Lightning Returns, her model designer showing off how much you can make her chest bounce. "Yes, her chest jiggles," explained Nobuhiro Goto. "Since everyone can decide what costume she’ll wear, you can make sure it does (laughs). By the way, since Lightning swings her arm when you change her weapon in the menu screen, that’s a recommended action for sure-fire jiggling! To see it even better it could be useful to equip a small shield. Look forward to it!" Well ... okay then. It kind of undermines the whole presentation of Lightning as someone to care about when the designers are laughing about how to maximize your perving potential with her. Then again, her sole personality trait was "pink hair" anyway, so it makes a sad sort of sense. I won't deny I always found Lightning a very attractive character, but I don't see how bigger boobs make her "hotter" in any way. She was absolutely fine as-is, and the big wobbly boob obsession this industry has is just infantile. I just hope they pay this much attention to Noctis' ballsack when XV rolls around. |
| Spacious Anxious sounds like Metroid boss music Posted: 28 Jul 2013 10:00 PM PDT Musician sleepytimejesse has graced the Dtoid front page before. Last year, he directed I Miss You - EarthBound 2012, in which various artists used the sound library from EarthBound to produce an entirely new score. He later directed Make Music, Throw Music, the same concept but using Yoshi's Island audio instead Spacious Anxious is his latest solo venture. It's an original 10-track space trek that samples sounds from multiple games spanning the SNES through GameCube, including Super Metroid, EarthBound, Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Kirby 64, Glover, and others. And yeah, it sounds totally like variations on Super Metroid boss battle themes. Fine by me! You can score the album from Bandcamp for only $4. Cough it up if you wanna! Spacious Anxious [Bandcamp] |
| GTA V's character switching modded into GTA IV Posted: 28 Jul 2013 08:00 PM PDT One of the big game changing new mechanics in Grand Theft Auto V is the ability to switch between three different characters. The trio will work together to pull of heists, but they'll also be living out their own lives when not in the player's control. Well a similar feature is in the works for Grand Theft Auto IV by modders from the GTA X Scripting YouTube. This is the same group that's modded in the Hulk, Iron Man, and more. This particular mod will allow players to switch between Niko, main protagonist from GTA IV, and the two episodic DLC releases, Johnny, and Luis. And like in GTA V, the character switching works just about the same way as you zoom away from your character, go high above Liberty City, then travel back down into another character as they're in the middle of whatever it was they were doing. Obviously it's not exactly like GTA V, especially how you can switch characters while the cops are in pursuit as you can't do in GTA V. Still, neat idea. The mod is currently in the works, and will be released at an unspecified time. |
| Devil Survivor 2 needs 1,800 pre-orders to come to Europe Posted: 28 Jul 2013 06:00 PM PDT Releasing a Nintendo DS game isn't as easy as it once was. Now that its successor has taken off, the venerable portable isn't receiving much support from retailers, and those looking to release titles on the aged system must resort to some pretty drastic measures. Ghostlight is trying to do just that with Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 in Europe. Whether the title will come to the territory remains to be seen. The publisher asserts it will require at least 1,800 pre-orders in order to break even on manufacturing costs. Pre-orders for the strategy role-playing game were initially planned to go live last week. That didn't happen. Ghostlight hit a snag with the content in the European version and is still awaiting final approval. In the meantime, the publisher has announced a pair of different ways players can acquire the title. Should the pre-order quota be achieved, Ghostlight will be offering a bundle including Devil Survivor: Overclocked with a £10.00 discount in addition to a standalone release. If the campaign fails, pre-orders for the standalone package will be refunded. Those that ordered the bundle would receive a partial refund alongside a discounted copy of Overclocked.
