Nintendo comments on EarthBound's pricing

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 04:00 PM PDT

[Art by Zac Gorman]

The cult classic SNES game EarthBound was released on the Wii U Virtual Console last week for $10. That's $2 more than most SNES Virtual Consoles games cost. A couple days later, we posted a feature on what makes the game so special. The comments exploded with debate about how games should be sold, what they're worth, and what consumers should do with their time and money.

One question still left unanswered was exactly why Nintendo priced the game the way that they did. We didn't get a detailed answer, but we did learn that "As for EarthBound, Nintendo sets prices in the Nintendo eShop and Virtual Console on a game-by-game basis. Different games will be offered at different prices." That makes sense, given the flexibility that Nintendo has shown with Wii U/3DS eShop pricing so far, allowing for sales and mark downs at any time, but it's good to get the official word on that. From there the Nintendo representative went on to add that they "...read [the] piece this weekend and really liked it. I love EarthBound so much, and you did a great job of explaining that appeal." Thanks Nintendo! You're pretty nice.

So the exact reasons why EarthBound costs $10 remain a mystery, but the game is currently #2 on the Wii U Virtual Console sales chart (right under Donkey Kong, currently on sale for $.30), so it looks like they may have known what they were doing.

Steam-exclusive Spelunky daily challenges sound brilliant

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 02:00 PM PDT

When Spelunky comes to Steam on August 8, it will include an exciting, exclusive new feature known as The Daily Challenge to PC. It's pretty straightforward: a fresh level is generated at random each day that's the same for everyone, but the twist is we only get a single run to climb the level's leaderboard. When you die, that's it for the day. Better make it count!

Leading up to launch, independent developers Douglas Wilson (J.S. Joust) and Zach Gage (SpellTower), who are credited as suggesting the idea to Mossmouth, will be streaming Daily runs for a week starting July 28. Other notable streamers like Nothernlion and MANvsGAME will be joining them to help promote the game's Steam release.

For as much time as I continue to sink into Spelunky, I've never been big on the competitive aspect of the game in terms of leaderboards. That changes in August. Come at me, readers.

Darkstalkers laid to rest after failed resurrection

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 01:30 PM PDT

Capcom is done with Darkstalkers for the foreseeable future, it seems. Speaking with Siliconera at San Diego Comic-Con, Capcom product manager Matt Dahlgren suggested the beloved fighting game franchise is being put on ice following the tepid release of Darkstalkers Resurrrection.

"Darkstalkers Resurrection did not perform as well as we would have liked to perform," Dahlgren lamented, confirming early reports of disappointing sales. "There is nothing Darkstalkers on the immediate horizon for sure," he added, dashing any hope of seeing the long-awaited fourth installment in the series anytime soon.

Dahlgren's words echo those of former Capcom senior vice president Christian Svensson. The recently departed executive indicated the title was selling poorly a few months back. Svennson chalked up the lackluster performance to a lack of promotion and the declining popularity of fighting game re-releases. Perhaps a full-fledged sequel might have fared better at market.

Dhalsim joins Blanka for some hardcore trollin'

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 01:00 PM PDT

If you couldn't get enough Blanka trollin' not once, but twice, you may enjoy this new video complete with a tag-teaming Dhalsim who joins the fun with a bit of fire. While I thought part two lost its luster a bit by re-using the same one-note joke, this one thankfully mixes things up with some pretty top-notch Dhalsim use.

Watching these videos makes me think Skullomania would be perfect in the future -- that dude just doesn't get enough love. If you're at work, you may want to skip 1:04 to 1:27 if you want to avoid some animated Dhalsim penis action.

Images of cut Gravity Rush/Journey PS All-Stars stage

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 12:30 PM PDT

Some pictures of a seemingly cut Journey cross Gravity Rush stage of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale hit the web courtesy of designer Ky Bui's website. They were quickly taken down, but the internet is all-seeing, without end, so you can still look at them. According to the website, Bui worked on PlayStation All-Stars for two years,

Sony Santa Monica has gone on record saying there will be no more PlayStation All-Stars DLC, so it looks like this neat stage will be lost in the ether. Speaking of, a canned statement from Sony, via Polygon, noted, "a number of characters and environments that were being explored during the game's development phase, including Dart." Shame Legend of Dragoon's protagonist never made it in the game. Maybe Sony could've leveraged any popularity to make another JRPG, or even a successor to Legend of Dragoon. Right? Right?

Fine. Probably not. But I have to have hope. Otherwise, how will I get a MediEvil 3?

Shame this level never made it into PSABR. Gravity Rush and Journey are pretty much two of my favorite games ever. Would have been fun to play. Then again, I've still barely played Sony's mascot fighter, so I guess I'm part of the problem. I even made a point to download Kat for free, but still haven't touched the title since last year. Just give me Gravity Rush 2.

Xbox One records your last five minutes of gameplay

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 12:00 PM PDT

While it sounds slightly creepy to hear that future consoles will always be recording our game performances, the potential is great in this current media landscape where video plays an increasingly prominent role in how we communicate with one another about games.

With Xbox One, "The last five minutes of any game you're playing is always being stored locally on your hard drive," said Microsoft Game Studios producer Ken Lobb in a chat with GameSpot during Comic-Con. At that point, you can go back in to cut out all of the fluff, add voiceover or picture-in-picture, and more. If you don't want to stop playing (e.g., you're in a multiplayer match), uttering the phrase "Xbox, record" will snatch the prior 30 seconds of footage for editing at a later time.

For the sake of comparison, PlayStation 4 will offer similar functionality but can record 15 minutes of gameplay footage as has been recently clarified by Sony. In discussions about these features, we're always told about pulling off cool moments and sharing them with others, but I'm far more interested in capturing hilarious glitches and other oddities.

Persona 3 film gets dark new trailer, release date

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 11:30 AM PDT

Atlus' Persona 3 is getting an animated film, Persona 3 The Movie #1: Spring of Rebirth. The fabulous Persona 4 has gotten loads of love in recent years, from an animated series to an exemplary Vita remake in Persona 4: The Golden to fighting game Persona 4 Arena. As we all eagerly await the eventual Persona 5, Atlus is making sure to give Persona 3 some attention with this new film, which will be releasing in Japan on November 23, 2013.

I'm pretty dang stoked for this. That art and animation are so good -- guess it's got a movie budget rather than an animated series budget. Gave me chills of nostalgia and general goodnes at times. Getting back into Persona 4 Arena of late has me appreciating the return of some of Persona 3's cast, particularly Mitsuru, whom I miss dearly since my time with Persona 3: FES.

Unfortunately, I've been picking up Chie in her stead in Persona 4 Arena and I'm nowhere near competent enough to try and learn two characters at the same time. Persona!

Holy crap, Nidhogg is releasing this year!

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 11:00 AM PDT

Messhof's competitive fencing game Nidhogg has eluded many people. Everyone who comes away having actually played the game absolutely raves about it, leaving us plebeians to sit and sulk as we wallow in self-pity. So apparently it's really good. As of now, the game is local multiplayer only, but the official release will add in online functionality.

In addition to being able to play over the Internet, new moves will be added to the game. One such move is a dive kick, not to be confused with the videogame Dive Kick. It will also have multiple stages and AI opponents for all the single players. The hope is to have the game on Steam, though it will likely need to go through Greenlight to get there.

I have been waiting for this moment for a very long time, so I think I will just take a moment to smile and take it all in. Nidhogg is coming out!

Valve responds to developer criticism of Steam Greenlight

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 10:00 AM PDT

We all know Valve's Steam Greenlight process isn't perfect; whilst there's been some great games come through the system like Rogue Legacy and Kentucky Route Zero, there's still unanswered questions and developer frustration as to how the approval system works. Indiestatik has posted a link to an open letter written by developer poe which outlines his frustrations with Greenlight.

In his letter, poe calls for greater transparency about the Greenlight process, for Valve to allow publisher to help developers, to bring back the old submission process as an option, and to bring in members of the indie community to help curate submissions. These are things that have been mentioned before by developers but up until now there's been no major response from Valve.

Valve's Tom Bui responded by admitting that Greenlight was indeed "not perfect by any stretch of the imagination" and claimed that there wasn't any way to ship as many games as the company would like. It seems Greenlight feels like a half-completed idea, one that appears to be working for the average consumer but is frustrating and even failing developers. Whilst there's still time to fix the process, one has to wonder how many worthy games will slip through the cracks.

Metal Slug XX joins PlayStation Plus this week

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 09:30 AM PDT

The Instant Game Collection for PlayStation Plus members grows another title stronger with the addition of Metal Slug XX starting tomorrow when the PS Store update goes live. This PlayStation Portable title (also playable on Vita) is a revision of Metal Slug 7 for DS and while it may not be the strongest entry in the series by any means, I'll always be down to chase after Morden.

Subscribers can also save on DLC for the charming platformer Thomas Was Alone. Normally priced at $2.49, Benjamin's Flight can be downloaded for $1.74 during the sale. Let this be a reminder that you should grab Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward for free before it leaves the rotation on July 30.

This trailer for The Bureau: XCOM Declassified is spooky

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Those suffering from coulrophobia look away now. In this new live-action trailer for The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, we get another hint of the paranoid flavour of the game's early 1960s setting. Young Kevin is watching his favourite clown on TV before being urged to go and play outside by his mother. Nice move, mom -- now Kevin's missed the best bit of the show and it's not like he can see the clip on YouTube later!

I'm not usually fussed about non-gameplay trailers like this one but I like how the period setting seems to be of real importance. It's during the space race and the "red menace" years of Cold War paranoia, which feels like a period of history that can fit in well with the alien invasion angle.

Jimquisition: Sequel or Slaughter

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Must every new videogame become a sequel-spawning franchise? Is it through necessity, or simple avarice that mainstream game development makes it so?

A little dash of jarnalizm, a spoonful of introspection, and two massive barrels of furious indignation bore to the core of this subject, in the only way Jimquisition knows how -- brutally. And without mercy.

Wargaming bids on Master of Orion in Atari asset sale

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 07:30 AM PDT

Having filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Atari Inc. is in the process of selling its assets in order to break way from its French parent company Atari S.A. The bids and backup bids for some of the company's notable properties have come through thanks to a court document being uploaded to Scribd for inquiring minds to pore over.

Most notably, Wargaming is listed as the successful bidder for Total Annihilation and Master of Orion, while Stardock is lined up to receive Star Control and Rebellion is going for Battlezone. These bids are pending court approval, which will happen on July 24, 2013. It'll be interesting to see how these properties are treated at their new homes.

Digital Extremes would 'love' Warframe on Xbox One

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 07:00 AM PDT

Digital Extremes' Warframe feels like a natural fit for consoles in scope and execution despite being a free-to-play title. The third-person shooter is already confirmed as a launch game for PlayStation 4, but what about Xbox One? The answer provided by VP of publishing Meridith Braun to OXM is about what you would expect, unfortunately.

"We would love to see Warframe on Xbox One, the ball is in Microsoft's court with regards to allowing titles on their system that come from an independent developer and not an established publisher," she said. It's regrettable that, of all the factors that could hold back a game from seeing a multiplatform release, it ends up being something like this.

I'm anxious to see how this pans out and if Microsoft will budge at all on the self-publishing issue as more notable games skip the platform under the current system.

Symphonic Selections bringing the finest VGM together

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 06:30 AM PDT

Today, tickets go on sale for the newest addition to the long-running line of videogame music concerts from German production company Merregnon Studios, titled Symphonic Selections. While the previous concerts in last few years have often revolved around a central theme or series of focus, this concert will see a blend of the biggest game music juggernauts come together, featuring reprises of some of the most popular arrangements performed earlier at the Symphonic Game Music Concerts, as well as all new debuts by the spectacular arrangement duo of Roger Wanamo and Jonne Valtonen.

Among the games you’ll find this November will be Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Shadow of the Colossus, Shenmue, Monster Hunter 3, and Super Mario Galaxy. The festivities will take place in the Cologne Philharmonic Hall, Germany, and will be performed by none other than the world famed WDR Radio Orchestra, the very same orchestra that performed the iconic Symphonic Fantasies as well as many other of Merregnon Studios' other productions. This time around, the orchestra will also be joined by the internationally renowned chamber group Spark, so this will not be a show you’d want to miss if you’re in the area.

Tickets are now on sale at Cologne Philharmonic’s website. If you’re in Europe, make the trek to experience a true symphonic marvel,  as these productions are world-class quality.

Enter the Dominatrix to be revived as Saints Row IV DLC

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 06:00 AM PDT

Previously slated as a standalone expansion for Saints Row: The ThirdEnter the Dominatrix has since been incorporated into Saints Row IV, though "very little" of the content made the cut in the merge according to developer Volition.

Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con, creative director Steve Jaros explained that Enter the Dominatrix will be put out as post-release DLC approximately 45 days after Saints Row IV launches. What this final version will look like remains to be seen, but if the original content was compelling enough to warrant a standalone release, there's probably some good stuff in there.

Forza Horizon dev reportedly working on next-gen Forza

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 05:30 AM PDT

Various job listings for Playground Games have hinted at the studio's next project coming off of Forza Horizon. It's referred to as a "visually stunning," "genre-leading" racing title, reports VideoGamer.

It was originally unclear if this would be a current- or next-gen game, but it seems as if that's been cleared up. As discovered by NeoGAF user TheOddOne, the LinkedIn profile for a vehicle technical artist has outed this as an "undisclosed next-gen Forza project." That was the original language used, anyway. The profile currently reads "undisclosed Xbox One project."

Would you be down for more Horizon, assuming that's what Playground is making? I can only handle so many open-world racers before getting burned out. I'm due for another one.

Wargaming is pushing for quicker updates on Xbox 360

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 05:00 AM PDT

Although it's highly unlikely I'll play much World of Tanks on Xbox 360 outside of sheer curiosity for how Wargaming will bring the game over from PC, I must say, its arrival on the console is one I'm greatly anticipating. This port has put CEO Victor Kislyi in a position to work with Microsoft more closely, and his team is apparently trying to influence things that will affect all of us -- namely, the notoriously long certification process for Xbox 360.

"The good thing is with online games, sometimes if you screw up, you can do frequent updates," Kislyi told Polygon. "But one of the biggest challenges with Microsoft was the frequency of updates because the QA process and certification process takes an extremely long time. Totally unacceptable for a meaningful free-to-play. We are working with them to do quicker updates."

Now, this could end up being one of those deals that a company like Wargaming can cut but other developers with less leverage cannot. Let's hope that's not the case -- that Microsoft will finally see the value in allowing quick updates across the board. We've seen too many games thrive on PC while simultaneously decaying on consoles due to a lack of post-release support.

Clementine will 'be a part of' Walking Dead's Season 2

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 04:30 AM PDT

At a Comic-Con panel this past Saturday, Telltale Games talked a little bit about what to expect from Season 2 of its critically acclaimed Walking Dead adventure game. Among the nuggets of information to come out of the panel was that Clementine, one of our favorite new characters of 2012, will "definitely be a part of" Season 2. Whether she will be playable, non-playable, central to the story, or tangential is still unknown.

Additionally, we may find out what happened to Kenny after the events of Season 1. Here, Telltale doesn't specifically say whether he will make any sort of appearance in Season 2, but only that his fate "will be explored." I suppose now is about the time to go on a media blackout so we don't learn any more about Season 2 until it drops this fall.

Dynasty Warriors dev: Xbox One needs earlier Japan launch

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 04:00 AM PDT

Dynasty Warriors director Atsushi Miyauchi has said that if Microsoft has any hope of gaining success in Japan, it needs a simultaneous launch, one much nearer to the North American release date.

"I think Microsoft gave up promoting and presenting the Xbox 360 in Japan, it didn’t keep the momentum there," he told Polygon. "And if they can release the Xbox One as close as possible to [the] North American release date, I think that would make a really big difference this time around.

"Not a lot of information has come to the Japanese game developers. So I think at this point now we don’t have much information until they make an official presentation to us; then [developers] would understand what they will be able to do."

Given how the Xbox One was planning to release in far fewer territories than the Xbox 360, Microsoft seems to have given up on appealing to the world at large and cares almost entirely about America and Europe. If Microsoft's not even bothering to give Japanese developers basic information, it may not even care about success in the East, much less be inclined to listen to Miyauchi.

Dead Rising 3 is still very much a Dead Rising affair

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 03:45 AM PDT

I know it's easy to hate on the many shortcomings of the Xbox One, but one thing I never understood was the immediate hate unleashed upon Dead Rising 3. Yes, the concept of "appealing to Call of Duty fans" is a bit disappointing, but without a tad more footage, I wasn't so sure the team would be completely ignoring the franchise's wacky roots.

Thankfully, this new video from Capcom shows that the craziness is still very much alive and well, augmented with the power of next-generation consoles that allow more zombies than ever before on-screen, and a world "larger than the first two games combined." The highlights of the above video include wrestling outfits, one-piece swimsuits, and crazy machine-gun-toting teddy bears.

While I'm not completely sold on Dead Rising 3, I will be giving it a shot before I write it off entirely.

You woke up this morning and hoped you'd seen some Drakengard 3 screenshots on Destructoid, didn't you? Well, you're 100% covered! Here are some Drakengard 3 screenshots, which you could view anywhere, like on All Games Beta, but you can also see here!

Plenty of combat images for your juicy exaltation, along with some pictures of a lady called IV. I'm assuming she's called IV, since people are known by numbers in this universe, and she's got a tattoo on her head with that number. Coincidence?!?!?!

Anyway, I'm quite looking forward to this. I would like to hit people with stuff, please.

Our EVO 2013 highlights post did a great job of showing you pretty much everything this year had to offer, but it also had a ton of information that could be seen as overwhelming to some.

Thankfully, Richard Li has put together a well produced official video running in at just under four minutes that shows some of the emotional side of things, most notably Justin Wong's crazy Marvel 3 comeback, and Reynald's exciting King of Fighters XIII win.

If this video doesn't make you want to go to EVO, nothing will! The reactions and passion from the crowd make the event just as much as the fights themselves.

Martian Manhunter Injustice DLC coming July 30

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 02:00 AM PDT

Live at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, NetherRealm Studios announced the release date for the upcoming Martian Manhunter character and John Stewart Green Lantern skin -- July 30th. There is no "Season 2 Pass" announced yet, so it looks like you'll have to buy the character piecemeal for now (or just wait for the Game of the Year/Komplete Edition).

Strangely enough, the DLC announcement just notes the PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms, so the Wii U version will probably drop at a later date.

Female Vampire wins Tekken Revolution character poll

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 01:30 AM PDT

Remember that poll that would decide the next brand new character in the Tekken franchise? Well it looks like we have a winner -- the Female Vampire. Right behind her were the "Female Tekken Force" character, and Shin Kamiya, followed by the Zombie Bride (the latter of which could have had a really cool fighting style).

The Female Vampire will being production shortly, and eventually, she'll end up in the free-to-play Tekken Revolution. I'm eager to see how she plays, so expect some sort of impressions near her release.

Harada also joked that "Muscle Pac-Man" could have been an option for the poll, but executives at Namco nixed the idea. Nuts!

Dynasty Warriors 8 Xbox 360 patch incoming

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 01:00 AM PDT

While I adored the latest iteration of Dynasty Warriors 8, it appears the Xbox 360 version was not quite as superb as the PS3 alternative. Fans have reported some real bad slowdown, severely hampering the game. Fear not, though, for a patch is inbound!

"We confirm that our development team is currently working on the patch and the patch will be released as soon as possible," writes Koei sexy boy Chin Soon Sun. "We will announce the submission date as well as the release date on all our social network channels. Sorry for the inconvenience."

The slowdown issues seem similar to those found in Warriors Orochi 2 when it first launched in the States. It seems that, when a Warriors game is PS3-only in Japan, Koei finds someone who really sucks at porting for the Western release. Bad show!

New Ultra Street Fighter IV trailer features gameplay

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 12:30 AM PDT

There's a new Ultra Street Fighter IV trailer in town, and it shows off a bit of the big names in the fighting game community, as well as a bit of Ultra footage with the new characters (but not the mystery character, of course).

I'm just now getting back into Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, and I'm gearing up for my first local tournament in a few weeks. Re-learning an Arcade Stick is like learning how to walk again, but thanks to the generosity of the fighting game community, I'm picking it up fairly quickly.

If you've ever wanted to get into Street Fighter IV yourself, now is a great time, as the sale is still going on.

Nintendo Download Europe: Pikmin 3!

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 12:00 AM PDT

After years of waiting for a sequel, Pikmin 3 is almost here for you Europeans -- specifically, on July 26th in both physical and digital form. Remember, if you're buying it in the EU eShop you'll earn a 30% discount on the digital version of The Wonderful 101 when it comes out. In North America, we'll have to wait until August 4th to claim dominion over the Pikmin, fling them around, and steal their planet's natural resources.

Kirby's Dream Land 3 also comes to the Wii U, and since it was previously available on the Wii, you can upgrade if you have that version. The Wii U Panorama View Tour app also has a deal where if you buy three tours you get the fourth free. The Wii is still getting support, most recently with Sengoku today.

On the 3DS side, Street Gangs (River City Ransom!) is here, and comes with two-player download play. Lastly, Super Black Bass 3D, I Love My Pets, and Petit Computer are available on the 3DS.

I recommend World War Blue, the console wars manga

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 07:00 PM PDT

WHAT!? Manga!? On my Destructoid homepage!? What is this, Japanator!?

Checking the shelves at Barnes & Noble this weekend, I happened upon a manga I had never heard called World War Blue. It caught my interest, so I flipped it over to read the synopsis on the back. To my delight, I learned that it was an adaptation of the videogame console wars -- I'm talking the real console wars between Nintendo and Sega, not the wishy-washy excuse for competition we have in today's market. I of course bought it immediately.

The deal is, there's a war on the continent of Consume between the Ninteldo Empire and the Segua Kingdom, with the former having gained control of 90% of the land. The hero in this tale is a Seguan named Gear, a blue-haired youth with supersonic speed. He joins the Segua Army and forms a strike team with characters based off of popular games: Opal, an archer with a shoulder plate that resembles Fantasy Zone's Opa-Opa; Nel, Gear's longtime friend who wields a claw like Phantasy Star's Nei; and Tejirov, a non-Seguan mercenary with a penchant for puzzles and things in groups of four. And naturally, the enemy Ninteldo leader is Flame Emperor Marcus, a mustachioed man who rides atop a ferocious dinosaur.
