| Gearbox bringing space RTS Homeworld into the HD realm Posted: 20 Jul 2013 12:00 PM PDT After Gearbox purchased the Homeworld IP from THQ earlier this year, many fans of the classic space RTS suddenly had their ears perk up in excitement. At their panel in PAX Australia today, the studio announced that they are working on HD remakes of both games in addition to bringing the originals to digital distribution platforms, according to Polygon. Gearbox's chief creative officer, Brian Martel, mentioned that he spearheaded the acquisition of the IP and wants to preserve the Homeworld games. I'm very happy to hear that, since an HD version of Homeworld with some online capabilities would be right up my alley. And hey, if they screw it up, at least we'll be able to buy the originals! | Half-Life mod Sven Co-op returning as its own game Posted: 20 Jul 2013 09:00 AM PDT Half-Life mods used to be all the rage. It seemed like each month brought a brand new and unique mod of the game's engine that felt completely alien yet familiar to play. Games like Earth's Special Forces or Battle of the Millenium were amazing and occupied hours upon hours of my time in high school. Among these mods was Sven Co-op, a cooperative and wacky mod that offered up hundreds of stories and missions through user-created maps and content. Hell, I remember spending entire afternoons with friends playing maps like OMG and SvenCoop RPG without a care in the world. Well, that feeling can finally be revived, as the mod is making a comeback! The developers have announced that the game is being remade with a custom version of the Half-Life engine, and will be free to all Steam users. This version will also have steady updates and increased performance, thanks to Steam's fancy services. There's something special about the good Half-Life mods out there, and Sven Co-op is certain one of them. Now, how about we do the same to ESF? | EarthBound: So what's the big deal? Posted: 20 Jul 2013 08:30 AM PDT [Image by Anonymous] EarthBound was re-released on the Wii U Virtual Consoles this week, with off-TV play and online access to the packed-in strategy guide from the game's original 1995 release on the SNES. Many fans of the game were overjoyed, while many more took one look and said "You want me to pay $10 for this?!?" They may have grown to love Ness from his appearances in Smash Bros., heard about the game's influence on the creators of South Park, seen the amazing merch from Fangamer, or read one of the many brilliant essays on the subject, but when confronted with the actual opportunity to buy the game, they were left cold. The sad fact is, EarthBound isn't any more marketable today than when it initially failed to meet sales expectations back in the '90s. Though Nintendo was wise enough to avoid telling the world that the game "stinks" and is "garbage" this time around, the underlying barriers between EarthBound and the mass market remain the same. It's very hard to see from a distance what makes the game so great. Here's my best attempt to give you an up close look at why this game means so much to so many. |
Capcom shows off 30 minutes of DuckTales' Himalayas stage Posted: 20 Jul 2013 08:00 AM PDT We already knew that Capcom was showing off the Himalayas level from DuckTales Remastered at San Diego Comic-Con. However, it also has a treat for anyone that couldn't attend the show. Capcom's released a 30 minute video walkthrough of one of the four chunks of the game that most players refer to as "not the Moon stage". While the video's fine and dandy, my takeaway was that there is a money pit for people to Scrooge McDuck-style dive into, and now I'm really bummed that I didn't make it to the convention. That would've been a great way to spend four straight days.
Saint Seiya: Brave Soldiers is coming to North America Posted: 20 Jul 2013 07:00 AM PDT We recently mentioned that Europe was getting some Saint Seiya love with Saint Seiya: Brave Soldiers for the PlayStation 3. As it turns out, Namco Bandai intends to bring the game to North America as a downloadable title on the PlayStation Network this coming November.
Get ready to rumble with Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z Posted: 20 Jul 2013 06:00 AM PDT Namco Bandai announced of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z a few weeks back at Anime Expo, but here at San Diego Comic Con, we're getting more details.
The party on the pirate ship at San Diego Comic-Con Posted: 20 Jul 2013 05:32 AM PDT Last night, the Jackdaw from Assassin's Creed IV (or something like it) was docked behind the convention center after San Diego Comic-Con closed. It was lit up, filled with drinks and music, and then boarded by partygoers from all over. Cannons were fired, drinks were had. It was the party to get into, and Ubisoft was definitely the talk of the town last night. Me? I was there for work. I had a chance to meet with some of the creators of the game as well as get my hands on some of ACIV's multiplayer. More on that later after I shake off the effects of all that grog. But the party was a blast. You can see a bit of what the shindig was like in our video and gallery. Videogames, right?
Dave Cox: Lords of Shadow 2 is 'the last one for us' Posted: 20 Jul 2013 05:00 AM PDT Speaking with producer Dave Cox at San Diego Comic Con about Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, we found ourselves surprised by the candid response we received when we asked about the future of the franchise: "I’ve always thought that this was a torch being passed down," David told us. "Nobody on the team ever felt like we owned Castlevania. We always felt it was our responsibility now but it wouldn't be ours forever. Let’s do what we’re going to do, tell our story, and move on. "So we’ve told Japan headquarters that this is the last one for us... there’s nothing worse than when somebody’s got something to say, and when they’ve said it, they just keep talking. We’ve got a beginning and end, and it’s a cool ending and a cool story. Once we’ve done that, it’s time to say to somebody else, 'now it’s your turn.' Maybe it will be a young producer in the company looking for his first break. I think you’ve got to bring in fresh blood." I'd have guessed the team would committed to a trilogy, and given the success of Lords of Shadow, I'm even more at a loss. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for this iconic franchise.
Belch out eyeballs of your foes in latest Pac-Man game Posted: 20 Jul 2013 04:00 AM PDT We covered the newly-announced Pac-Man game at E3, and while Brett's assessment wasn't positive, I was shocked most by the belch that Pac-Man lets loose at the end of each stage, from which the eyeballs of his consumed ghostly foes spew forth.
Borderlands 2 is getting tons of DLC this fall Posted: 20 Jul 2013 03:00 AM PDT Gearbox confirmed at their PAX Australia panel that Borderlands 2 will be getting a level cap upgrade (to 72), and new raid bosses and missions in the form of DLC. The level cap DLC will be called the "Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 2: Digistruct Peak Challenge," and will be priced at $4.99 (I still can't believe they're charging for this), with an intended release date sometime in October. The challenge itself features the character Patricia Tannis, who allows you to fight "high level" enemies for loot. In addition to this paid DLC, a free title update will be coming to increase ammo, bank, and backpack slots. If you aren't satisfied with that, "Headhunter" packs are also coming, with more mission and boss content, one of which will feature T.K. Baha (of Borderlands 1), and a boss fight against "Jaques O' Lantern." Right now Gearbox doesn't have a set date or price on these Headhunter packs, but states there might be "two or three" of them. More skins will also be coming, including Dragon Keep flavored costumes. So provided you're excited for all this, here's the bad news -- as expected (and clearly listed on the description itself), the Season Pass will not include any of this content. More info will be revealed in the future, including Gearbox's "Community Day" on September 14th. I wouldn't count out a "Season 2" pass. Well, it looks like my wish of a fully-fledged campaign similar to Dragon Keep isn't happening. Instead, we're getting a ton of different micro-transactions that I'll have to sift through the marketplace for, and attempt to locate amidst the cavalcade of costume DLC. Borderlands 2 [OXM]
Dazzled by virtual pinball: VP Cabs' brilliant table Posted: 20 Jul 2013 02:00 AM PDT Imagine a pinball machine with no moving parts other than buttons for flippers. Imagine being able to load up any of your favorite tables from memory to play instantly. VP Cabs custom pinball machine lets you do exactly that. We had a chance to check one at at San Diego Comic-Con today, and now I have to have one. This custom cabinet uses the Steam version of Zen Studios' Pinball FX2 to give users a realistic pinball experience in a system that needs no maintenance ever. Inside you'll find a high-end CPU and graphics hardware, letting it display sharp graphics on its table and backboard displays. $5,000 buys you the finest in virtual pinball. Add a couple thousand more to get full force feedback features.
Powerstar Golf is in the rough Posted: 20 Jul 2013 01:00 AM PDT Powerstar Golf is a launch title for Xbox One. It's an arcade golf title, but it's no Hot Shots Golf. On the surface it seems like it's par for the arcade-y golf course, but a few issues have it stuck in the sand traps. If you were to pull out the big-headed/small-bodied Japanese characters of Hot Shots Golf and replace them with taller, comic book-ish characters, you'd have something that looks a lot like Powerstar. The courses are sharp and clean, and the HUD is exactly as you'd expect. Its environments look nice, though there's nothing about it that screams next gen. The control scheme and shot mechanic are also pretty similar to Hot Shots. It uses the three button press swing -- once to start the swing, again to set the power, and one more time to set accuracy. Even course navigation and the putting grid are right in line with what you'd see from Clap Hanz's work.
New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles based on the new toon Posted: 19 Jul 2013 08:00 PM PDT Not content to just release Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows this year, Activision has also announced the annoyingly named Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, based on the new, supposedly surprisingly good Nickelodeon cartoon. You know, we have subtitles for a reason, Activision. It lets us easily tell games apart. I get the drive towards simplicity, but we remember Turtles in Time more than anything, anyway. Subtitles are fine. The local, four person drop-in/drop-out co-op brawler is slated to "bridge the gap between the show's first and second seasons." It also looks pretty awesome, easily transposing the show's unique, blocky 3D style with a sort of cel-shaded look. I like it a lot more than Out of the Shadows' sort of gross and gritty style. At the same time, I'm cautious about this game. For instance, why is this retail release only coming to Xbox 360, Wii, and 3DS? Why not Wii U or PS3? What are you hiding, Activision? The amount of actual gameplay shown was pretty slim. For the time being, I'll remain cautiously optimistic and go play Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist on my Genesis (because I no longer have Turtles in Time and Hyperstone Heist is basically the same game with an added boss) and hope this doesn't end badly.
Dead Rising 3 started on 360, pushed the hardware too far Posted: 19 Jul 2013 07:00 PM PDT Dead Rising 3 first surfaced almost two years ago. So how did it end up an Xbox One title? According to Capcom Vancouver producer Mike Jones, talking to Siliconera, it was a matter of resources. "In terms of building the game, we originally developed it on PC and everything we were doing was breaking the bank on 360," Jones said. "The number of zombies, the streaming stuff we wanted to do, memory budgets for the number of environments and items and physics and all of that stuff. Our tech team partnered with Microsoft to get early specs and figure out how we were going to get it on new hardware." Seems as if the Xbox One's PC-like architecture aided the transition and allowed Dead Rising 3 to be a much more expansive game than previous entries in the series. "All of the Kinect things, we're making a game for hardware that isn't finished that we're all trying to launch together on day one," Jones said of the relationship between Microsoft's tech team and Capcom Vancouver. "Basically, we've been in lock step with them." So Capcom wasn't so much infatuated with the "power of the Xbox One" -- the cringe worthy buzz phrase of Microsoft's Es 2013 -- and more annoyed by technical limitations of the Xbox 360 late in the console's life cycle. Meanwhile, the American-oriented Xbox One makes sense as the platform for the continuation of a series borne on Xbox and one that's being altered to be, "more mature and sophisticated," to appeal more to Call of Duty fans. Here's hoping there's enough zaniness hidden beneath the color-drained, tactical-strike-calling title. Why Dead Rising 3 Moved From Xbox 360 To Xbox One [Siliconera]
The Smurfs 2: The Video Game stars evil Peter Molyneux Posted: 19 Jul 2013 06:00 PM PDT The Smurfs 2: The Video Game isn't your typical licensed movie game chaff, thanks to what appears to be an appearance from 22 Cans' Peter Molyneux as iconic Smurfs villain Gargamel. Molyneux of course is known for the Fable series, as well as the recent cube-tapping experiment Curiosity and the upcoming Godus. There also seems to have been some sort of eyebrow augmentation remiscent of Morgan Freeman in Dreamcatcher. It's like someone drew them on with a dry erase marker. Just for the record, I'm pretty sure that hideous automaton is not actually Peter Molyneux, but simply the fevered nightmare dream of some overworked, underpaid 3D modeller that had to churn out this licensed garbage with no time or budget. I'm sorry for everyone at Ubisoft and WayForward that had to work on this videogame. I'm just so sorry. If you hate your children and want to give them night terrors of creepy Gargamel or that taxidermy-gone-wrong cat, The Smurfs 2: The Video Game is available on Xbox 360, Wii U, Wii, PS3 and 3DS.
| The Daily Hotness: Dota 2's new reporting system Posted: 19 Jul 2013 04:59 PM PDT If only all other multiplayer games could catch up to these lofty standards. Alas, not everyone has Valve's eye for innovation. Today, Comic Con keeps on keeping on, with teases of Borderlands 2 DLC and the announcement of a new Assassins Creed comic. Netherrealm announces new S.T.A.R. Labs DLC for Injustice: Gods Among Us, EA pushes forward with its plans for a Dead Space movie, and Namco makes my gaming week with the announcement of Soul Calibur 2 HD Online. | Super Smash Bros. has some of the best screenshots Posted: 19 Jul 2013 04:00 PM PDT Don't get me wrong, I'm far from immune to the charms of Super Smash Bros. and seem to always get giddy when booting up the latest title for the first time, but the lead up to each new installment is where it's really at for me. Remember Smash Bros. DOJO!!? Those were the good times. Nintendo has been updating its official site for the upcoming 3DS and Wii U game with daily images that are often overflowing with personality and put most other promotional materials to shame. Today's screenshot from director Masahiro Sakurai was too good to resist sharing. With many months of development time ahead of the Smash Bros. team, it's never too late to make checking in part of your daily routine. You're so not ready for the Wii Fit Trainer's poses. |
