How to Survive is an isometric zombie survival game Posted: 30 May 2013 04:00 PM PDT 505 Games has announced How to Survive, a brand new IP developed by EKO Studios. The game strands players on a remote archipelago off the coast of Columbia in the aftermath of an unexplained accident, and forces players to survive against zombies and basic human needs. Yes, you'll have to seek out food, water, and shelter, all while crafting dozens of tools and weapons that range from fishing rods to Molotov cocktails. How to Survive will feature local and online multiplayer, plus there will be challenge modes for extra replay value. We can expect this one this Fall for the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and on PC through Steam.
Sega really wants to get Castle of Illusion right Posted: 30 May 2013 03:30 PM PDT It can't be easy trying to do justice to a legacy as large as Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse. Take in Mickey's rough patches in his last few games, and it's not hard to see why many fans would be so apprehensive to jump on board. Sega Australia knows this, and at the very least, seems sincere in trying to do right by the original. In this behind the scenes developer diary, the Sega Australia team is joined by the original Castle of Illusion director Emiko Yamamoto, and art director Takashi Yuda. The new class has their blessings, now lets see if they have their magic. If there are some glimmers of promise, it's that the new team understands that this can't be a straight remake (I'm sure fans would be happy with that), and are making measured efforts to add what the hardware of the time couldn't handle. Retro plus, as studio director Marcus Fielding puts it.
Crysis 3's multiplayer expansion heads to The Lost Island Posted: 30 May 2013 03:00 PM PDT Crysis 3 is getting some downloadable content in the form of The Lost Island. This pack will include four new maps, plus new weapons, and two new modes called Frenzy and Possession. Want to know more all about these new features? Yeah, I do too but the press release didn't elaborate. Instead, we just know the new content will be out on June 4 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC for $14.99. Don't get me wrong, Crysis 3 was enjoyable as was the multiplayer mode. But, uh, are people really still playing the multiplayer here?
Whoops! Mirror's Edge 2 listing popped up on EA's website Posted: 30 May 2013 02:30 PM PDT This morning, if you were to follow this link, you would have landed on a page that looks like the above screencap for a Mirror's Edge 2 help page on EA's official site. The page has since been taken down, but come on we know what's happening here. Mirror's Edge 2 is in all likelihood about to be announced at E3 in just a couple of weeks for at least next-gen consoles. Oh next-gen? Yeah if we were to believe this listing slip on Amazon.
| Xbox One visual designers used 'the blackest black' Posted: 30 May 2013 02:00 PM PDT I have been waiting for this moment. Microsoft has let the designers responsible for the look and feel of Xbox One out of wherever they're kept hidden to talk about how the new console was developed and what inspired them. Highlights include how the team applied the 16:9 ratio (and various fractions thereof) to the physical design of the console and Kinect sensor, how they used liquid black (aka "the blackest black," according to the article) to enable the hardware to, "melt into the background when being used," and the way integration of the design and engineering teams allowed for rapid iteration through dozens of prototype consoles and more than a hundred versions of Kinect. These sorts of articles generally give me a little bit of a chuckle because of how earnest and dedicated the designers are toward things the vast majority of people will never give any thought to in a product. But that's also the point, is it not? Good design can evoke ideas through form, convey the function of a device and instill an emotion without the consumer necessarily being aware of it. And while the approach may sometimes seem a bit silly, you also can't help but admire the pride they take in the work. The Beauty of Xbox One: A New Approach to Design [Xbox.com]

New Payday 2 trailer goes all sneaky mode Posted: 30 May 2013 01:30 PM PDT I never got around to playing PAYDAY: The Hiest, as it ended up being one of the victims of my every growing backlog. I might just have to make up for that with the sequel though. The latest trailer for Payday 2 is now up, showing off some of the game's more tactical options. Covering entrances for your mark, stealth killing guards, and disabling security cameras all seem on offer. At least, before cutting loose Heat style. If that tickles your insides, you can pre-order for the Lootbag DLC from retailers, which will net you a red dot sight for all you rifles, a unique mask, mask color, and mask pattern, in addition to some starting cash. If you're looking to put extra cash down for a special edition, the Career Criminal Edition will get you in-game discounts, printable blueprints, a digital soundtrack, two beta keys, and a heist guide through Steam pre-orders. And for your useless knowledge factoid of the day, I actually have the mask shown at the 1:14 mark. And yes, it's just as fun to use on people as you might imagine.
The sun never sets on Assassin's Creed IV's production Posted: 30 May 2013 01:00 PM PDT Another year, another Assassin's Creed, and another series of developer diaries to get the hype train moving. I think by now we can all agree that these developer diaries are more masturbatory than actually informative. That said, the first diary for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag actual delves just a little bit into some of the unique challenges of such a large international effort. Definitely worth a gander if you're looking forward to Black Flag. As game director Ashraf Ismail puts it, "Every minute of the whole week, someone, somewhere in this world is working on Assassin's Creed IV." Ubisoft is a well oiled machine it would seem. We'll just have to wait until October to see how well oiled.
Killzone 4 dev: PS4 'easiest platform to develop for' Posted: 30 May 2013 12:30 PM PDT Killzone 4 is the flagship first-person shooter for the PlayStation 4, and this latest promotional trailer features some of the developers behind the game talking up the power of Sony's new console. The team talks about how they can do more with the visuals, and how the system is the easiest platform they've ever developed for. Michiel Leeuw, technical director on Shadow Fall, also details how you'll be able to play the game while it's downloading at the same time. You'll download the first level, play it, and then the other levels will download right behind it. The future is now! We're going to be seeing way more of Killzone 4 at E3 in just over a week. Excited?
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic available on iPad Posted: 30 May 2013 12:00 PM PDT Knights of the Old Republic, Bioware's cherished Star Wars title, has just been released for the iPad. The much loved title is 10 years old which seems good enough reason to receive an iOS release. IGN have managed to get their hands on the port, which they say still holds up despite some issues with character movement. The iPad version will cost you $9.99/£6.99. I'm keen to try this version of KOTOR out (after "borrowing" my dad's iPad first); I have concerns about how easy your character control will be but to be honest I'm almost expecting to have those issues from a touch screen port. The game's real strengths lie in it's characters and the story that unfolds. Now if Bioware were to organize a port of the buggy yet superior KOTOR II: The Sith Lords, then they'd have a definite sale here.
JP Luigi 3DS XL bundled with Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Posted: 30 May 2013 11:45 AM PDT I'd happily take the whole thing. All of it. The upcoming special Luigi 3DS XL (which Hamza says looks like a pattern for panties) comes to Japan on July 18, and it will come bundled with Mario & Luigi: Dream Team and a 4GB SD card. That's a pretty attractive offer, panty pattern or no. Nintendo Japan says that this will be priced at 22,800 yen, which comes out to about $225 after conversion. Given that the current price for a Japanese 3DS XL is about $200, it seems they're paying just a tad bit more for the game.
New Final Fantasy XIV Job Actions video sure is flashy Posted: 30 May 2013 11:30 AM PDT The relaunch of Final Fantasy XIV as A Realm Reborn is only a couple of months away, after the original version failed all that time ago. In order to drum up some excitement and interest, a new video has been released demonstrating some of the spells and skills available to the various classes. They sure are pretty to look at, even if I'm not completely sure what they're actually using in this video. I played Final Fantasy XI for quite some time, and hearing all of these familiar sound effects again gets me a bit warm and tingly inside. I'm pretty optimistic for the MMO relaunch, if for nothing else than to bask in the wonderful aesthetic that I loved so much about FFXI. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn releases August 27, and you can sign up for the beta here.
Bloomberg: Sony is looking to sell entertainment division Posted: 30 May 2013 11:20 AM PDT Bloomberg reports that, according to people familiar with the matter, Sony is currently looking to break off at least some of its entertainment division and sell it. They're reportedly working with Morgan Stanley and Citigroup on a public offering in a move that could help them raise cash and boost their stock price. Third Point LLC CEO Daniel Loeb is pushing for Sony to sell up to 20 percent of the entertainment division. This move would allow Sony to hunker down and focus on their electronics business. The Japanese company has been down, with Samsung winning in the TV space, and Apple dominating in the mobile/tablet market. With the PlayStation 4 around the corner, it's probably a good time to be focusing on the electronics side of things.
TUG: About my Kickstarter & the need for science in games Posted: 30 May 2013 11:00 AM PDT [Peter Salinas -- one of the social scientists working at Nerd Kingdom -- hit up our Community Blogs recently to share a bit about the thought process behind their new game TUG. Pretty neat stuff! For more information on the game, check out the TUG Kickstarter, which passed its funding goal earlier this week.] Hi! My name is Peter Salinas and I am a behavioral scientist that studies socio/cultural and psychological stuff in videogames. I have been a lurker of Dtoid and a member of the community for some time. What has always kept me here is the independence of the site and its ability to push harder each year, with more obstacles placed in its path, and still never sell out. For me, this is what is most important within the culture of the Dtoid community... well, that and all the dick and fart jokes. *high five* I wanted to share with you a project I have been working on with a team of brilliant minds that could use your support -- or at least a moment of your attention. TUG is an open-world, sandbox role-playing fantasy game that is being developed on the foundation of human understanding and the motivation of dynamic play and interactions. To say our project has stirred up some questions would be a gross understatement, so I wanted to try to clear some things up in the hopes of garnering genuine support of what we are doing.
Live show: Dragons Prophet open beta celebration Posted: 30 May 2013 10:45 AM PDT [Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch King Foom play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.] After taking a little over a week off from playing Dragon's Prophet, I couldn't be happier to jump back in this evening on Mash Tactics. The reason for taking the time off, and for my severe dragon capturing withdrawal, was to not have to lose another high level character due to the inevitable character wipe, that comes with a launch into open beta. Well, the wait is over, the open beta is upon us, and there will no more wipes, allowing me to really sink into the game, and get truly invested without worry of another reset. QotD: How do you feel about the next generation of console gaming?
This week's Humble Weekly Bundle is all about Telltale Posted: 30 May 2013 10:00 AM PDT Not content with spoiling us with another awesome Humble Bundle, this week's Humble Weekly Bundle is pretty awesome, offering a whole load of Telltale Games' adventure titles. Back To the Future, Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse and Wallace and Gromit's Grand Adventure are all included, along with the Puzzle Agent games, Poker Night at the Inventory and Hector: Badge of Carnage. As always, the Humble Bundle is pay what you want but if you pay over the average (at time of writing just $3.93) the you'll unlock Destructoid's 2012 game of the year The Walking Dead. That's a heck of a lot of gaming for a few dollars, even though at this stage Humble Bundles are really just filling in a lot of the blanks in my Steam library.
Razer unveils world's thinnest gaming laptop Posted: 30 May 2013 09:33 AM PDT [Update: Razer also announced a new version of their 17" Razer Pro series, detailed below.] Razer have unveiled an ultra-slim, gaming laptop called the Razer Blade. The specs are seriously impressive; a 14" HD screen, a 4th generation Intel processor, and a NVIDIA GeForce 765 graphics processor. That's some serious horsepower for a gaming laptop. Also included is 8GB of DDR3 - 1600Mhz RAM and 128GB SSD drive, which can be upgraded to either 256GB or 512GB. It's the form factor that's most impressive to me; I really like my Samsung despite it's bulky frame but I do wish I had a more svelte laptop. Considering it's tiny dimensions, it's impressive that Razer have fitted so much in there. Our esteemed Dale North was really impressed with the 2012 model of the Razer Blade but he realized the price was out of the range of most gamers. Starting at $1,799, the Razer Blade 14" might be a bit more palatable but still out of the range of some gamers. However, it might be the perfect sweet spot between portability and performance.
Molyneux's GODUS allows players to overthrow their god Posted: 30 May 2013 09:30 AM PDT Peter Molyneux's at it again, but this time, his lofty game idea hinges on the behavior of Bryan Henderson, an 18-year-old university freshman from Scotland. Henderson won Molyneux's Curiosity contest by clicking the game's final cube, and has been rewarded by being deified in GODUS, the next project from Molyneux's studio, 22Cans. The gig pays too, as Molyneux says that Henderson will receive a "significant" portion of the profits that GODUS rakes in. However, the position comes with one Mount Olympus-sized catch -- players will be able to overthrow him. After a certain period of time, other players will be able to usurp Henderson's throne, and take a cut of his salary. Molyneux hopes that this caveat will keep Henderson a fair ruler instead of leading to a predictable god-complex. Despite his mighty status, there will be limitations to Henderson's reign. "These [powers] are within the confines of game balancing. Some of them are moral decisions, some may be territorial decisions" Molyneux states. "He can't kick everyone in the world. He can't suddenly decide that everyone's games get deleted." Regardless of the reaction to their ruler, Henderson sounds like he's up for the challenge. "If anyone tries to overthrow me, they'll have to give me everything they've got" he says. Godus Players Can 'Overthrow' Their Virtual God Bryan [Wired]
Japan is getting a new Wii U GamePad battery pack Posted: 30 May 2013 09:15 AM PDT If you're a Wii U owner that's frustrated with the battery life on your GamePad, then there might be some relief on the horizon. A new Wii U enhanced battery pack will be released in Japan in July, promising between "5-8 hours" of usage. After a quick survey of Destructoid's writers it seems that the normal battery life of the Wii U GamePad is 3 to 4 hours, depending on the game and living room size. The battery pack is priced at ¥3,150, which is approximately $31. Also getting a battery upgrade is the humble Wiimote, which is getting a new rechargeable battery pack and charger. Whilst both these battery packs are confirmed for a July release in Japan, there's no word yet on a North American or European release date. Japan is also seeing the release of the white Wii U Premium Bundle which will retail for the same price as the black Premium Bundle of ¥31,500 ($312). Again, no word on a possible release outside of Japan.
Compile Heart's latest RPG Fairy Fencer F is such a tease Posted: 30 May 2013 09:00 AM PDT Compile Heart has served up a morsel of gameplay footage for its upcoming fantasy role-player Fairy Fencer F. And, well, it looks like a Compile Heart game. Despite looking very much like just about everything else the studio has put out in recent memory, Fairy Fencer F is something of an interesting release, if only for its impressive pedigree. Developed by the Hyperdimension Neptunia team, the PlayStation 3 title features artwork by Final Fantasy illustrator Yoshitaka Amano and music from Nobuo Uematsu and the Earthbound Papas. Fairy Fencer F is scheduled to launch on September 19 in Japan.
Limbo coming to the PS Vita on June 4 Posted: 30 May 2013 08:45 AM PDT You're probably plagued by the oddly specific problem of loving to die in videogames, but hate being tethered to the general area of your console. Lucky for you, Limbo is arriving on PSN for PlayStation Vita next week, freeing you up to indulge in some dying on-the-go. Approaching the three-year anniversary of Limbo's initial release on Xbox Live Arcade, the game has finally been optimized for handheld devices. While it's a departure from the original format, Playdead promises that the experience isn't compromised. Limbo will be available for the PS Vita on June 4 for $14.99. The chills you get from that giant damned spider don't cost extra. Limbo Comes to PlayStation Vita June 4 [PlayStation]
Level-5 announces a trio of mobile role-playing games Posted: 30 May 2013 08:30 AM PDT Ni no Kuni studio Level-5 is developing a set of three role-playing games for mobile platforms, Weekly Famitsu reports. Part of the company's 15th anniversary celebrations, the trio of titles features a few high profile names alongside some diverse concepts. Wonder Flick is a loot-based role-player directed by Level-5 boss Akihiro Hino and featuring a soundtrack by legendary Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu. There's also Maijin Station, a railway sim boasting artwork from Yusuke Kozaki of Fire Emblem: Awakening fame. Finally, Chikyu Kaimetsu teki B-kyu Kanojo is a more traditional RPG set in a post-apocalyptic world where most of the men have died off, leaving behind a wasteland full of beautiful female mercenaries. Because of course. All three games will be coming to iOS and Android devices later this year. Level-5 announces three new smartphone RPGs for 2013 [Polygon]
Nintendo's Wii U tour comes to Anaheim this month Posted: 30 May 2013 08:00 AM PDT Nintendo's six-city tour with Wii U in tow comes to Anaheim, Calif. Downtown Disney will see this free attraction pop up from May 26 through June 23, and will give visitors hands-on opportunities with games like LEGO City Undercover, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate from Capcom and Need for Speed Most Wanted U from EA. Given its timing, I wonder if they'll also include some of the games they'll show off at E3 here in a week or so. There will be a mock living room with Nintendo characters on hand for photo opportunities. They'll also be handing out gifts. You'll find more details on the tour here.
Luftrausers goes color while Vlambeer goes live stream Posted: 30 May 2013 07:45 AM PDT On last Sunday's Sup Holmes (now on iTunes) we were joined by the unflappable Rami and J.W. of Vlambeer fame. The reveled the path of near-cancellation and eventual success of Ridiculous Fishing, the origins of their unique style, the impact that their conflict-friendly interpersonal relationship has on their development process, their rapid prototyping process, their collaborators (including Zack Gage, Davey Wreden, and many others), Microsoft's current failures at courting small developers, tips on making fun videogames, and perhaps most importantly, the latest scoop on their upcoming projects. First we have Luftrausers, which is about to blow on the PS3, PS Vita, PC, Max, and Linux. We learned that the game can be "won" in less than a minute if everything comes together perfectly, but few will ever achieve this feat. Most will play the game for hours, gaining new weapons, tackling waves of enemies, discovering new idiosyncrasies on every play through, all while blowing stuff up at a constant rate. It's never the same game twice. We also learned that Vlambeer has turned to some of their favorite developers to help create custom color palettes for Luftrausers. The default game will still be presented in sepia tones, but there will be a series of alternate visuals included in the package as well. Sounds like a deal! Perhaps the most exciting was the news that Vlambeer is hard at work on their next release. They wouldn't tell us much about it, but we do know that they'll be streaming much of the development of the game live, involving fans with the process as they go. While you may not land yourself a king's position on the development team any time soon, you can bet that no good idea will be left wasted, so you might as well get involved and see what happens. Thanks again to Vlambeer for joining us on the show, and tune in this Sunday when we welcome Graham and Chris from Drinkbox Studios (Guacamelee, Mutant Blobs Attack) to the program. It's going to be pretty good.
Tales of Xillia Limited Edition available for order now Posted: 30 May 2013 07:30 AM PDT Namco Bandai saw that we all went nuts for the Tales of Xillia Collector's Edition, so they're announcing a Limited Edition for North America. I hope that makes sense to you. There's no Milla figure in this Limited Edition, but it does have a special case, a character profile booklet, a music CD, and two DLC costumes. It will be limited to all first-run copies, and will be priced at $59.99 when at release, set for August 6. This Limited Edition is now available for pre-order at participating retailers. And no worries if you've already pre-ordered the game -- you'll be automatically upgraded to the Limited Edition.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy HD on App Store now Posted: 30 May 2013 07:00 AM PDT Capcom says that Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy HD is now on Apple's App Store, ready for you to download for your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. You'll get the first three games -- Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Justice for All, and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trials and Tribulations -- for your pocketable device, all upped to HD, and with touchscreen controls added. Bonus: A new Everyone Object mode allows you to object to anything you'd like in your daily life with phrases from the series. You can tweet or email out images, too. The first two episodes of the first game are free with the download, and additional episodes can be bought individually for $5.99/£3.99/€4.99, and the other two games will be in-app purchases, priced at $6.99/£4.99/€5.49/. I think you're better off buying the whole bundle, priced at $16.99/£11.99/€13.99. Any objections?
Game of Thrones opening sequence recreated in StarCraft Posted: 30 May 2013 06:30 AM PDT Using the StarCraft II Cutscene Editor, YouTube user Tolkfan created the video above, which takes us across the continents of Westeros and Essos in a recreation of the opening sequence for Season 1 of HBO's Game of Thrones. The fictional geography lesson begins with the Terrans in King's Landing, then heads north to Winterfell and The Wall, before finally panning east to Pentos. Bonus points awarded for the dragon-like Zerg near Daenerys's location and the rings in the beginning that were created using an invisible spinning pineapple. While this isn't quite the coolest videogame representation of Westeros, that music always gets me ready for some good old fashioned political intrigue.
Nintendo Download: The Denpa Men 2, Zelda, bundles Posted: 30 May 2013 06:00 AM PDT Hold the phone. Drop your baby. Spit your milk. Pee your pants. There are a few new games for this week's Nintendo Download that you may be interested in, but none of them can touch 3DS Gummy Bears Mini Golf. System seller. GOTY. Freakin' benchmark videogame. Also for the 3DS this week, The Denpa Men 2: Beyond the Waves lets you get your RPG on ($11.99). And in keeping with the RPG theme, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons are also available this week, priced specially until June 20 at $4.99 each. And Project X Zone has the Imperial demo coming up on June 4, so look out for that. On the Wii U side, there's discounts aplenty. Buy either Ghosts 'n Goblins or Mega Man X and get the other half off. This deal runs through June 6. Just Dance 4 is also on sale.
Double Fine announces Kickstarter for new strategy game Posted: 30 May 2013 05:45 AM PDT Double Fine made history last year with the Broken Age Kickstarter, bringing in over $3.3 million after asking fans to help fund it. Today, the industry darling developer announced a new Kickstarter campaign with hopes for a repeat performance. Massive Chalice promises tactical battles similar to those found in X-COM or Final Fantasy Tactics, taking place over the course of many lifetimes. As a result, individual warriors will gain experience, age, and eventually die, but not before leaving behind offspring with similar traits. As is often the case with Kickstarter games, no gameplay has been shown, but Double Fine's pedigree will likely carry this campaign to success with ease. As of this writing, only minutes after the launch of the campaign, Massive Chalice has already attained over $75,000 of its $725,000 goal.
Podtoid 255: Semen Milking Squeeze of the Dragoness Posted: 30 May 2013 05:30 AM PDT Jonathan Holmes has very real butt trouble in this week's episode, but that doesn't mean he gets it gently. Instead, Dr. Sterling uses his poopology degree to try and diagnose the problem, before Holmes is whisked away to be the living prisoner of an underground time capsule, where he shall know a new god. Elsewhere, the gang gets caught up reading some of the most horrific sounding sex game descriptions. It's really horrible. Also, Xbox One gets talked about a little more, a choice is made between Magneto and Anita Sarkeesian, and something about Fire Emblem. As ever, you can subscribe to us on iTunes and RSS, buy our Android App or download directly!
Intense FPS Intruder's new dev video talks about voice Posted: 30 May 2013 05:00 AM PDT The realistic-enough first-person shooter Intruder has a new developer video up detailing how voice communication works and OH MAN this game finally has textures! Everything prior to this has been an untextured white-out of a game, but now there's finally some color and guns looks like guns! That's just as exciting as what they're actually demonstrating in the video. Intruder uses "3D voice," which means that you can't hear a teammate talk to you unless you're within a close proximity. Whispering is also important, since enemies can also hear your voice chat. There are also walkie talkies that allow direct communication across maps, but you need to be holding them in order to use them; your gun cannot be out while using walkie talkies. Now, just don't be a jerk and use Ventrillo or something instead of the in-game voice.
Tokyo Game Show 2013's main visual: Limitless Evolution Posted: 30 May 2013 04:30 AM PDT Tokyo Game Show has released their main visual for 2013 this morning. As expected, it's some weird robot/game girl from illustrator Ippei Gyoubu. He's been responsible for the key art for TGS since 2010, and he never lets us down with the strangeness. This year's main visual character is "the core of games," and wears a variety of devices. She's going to transform herself into "something beyond the reach of imagination" to represent this year's slogan: "Games: Limitless Evolution." TGS, please never stop being weird. TGS have partnered with Tokyo Otaku Mode to send information from the show overseas to us. They'll also work support overseas visitor to this year's event, adding a lounge for them at the show. That'll be nice. I'll be going again this September to cover TGS for Destructoid. It should be a really good show this year as Japan will be showing off their latest wares for the PS4. Can't wait.
Rayman Legends is great, but you already knew that Posted: 30 May 2013 04:00 AM PDT There aren't many games out there where you just know you're going to buy it after the second you see it in action. Rayman Legends is one such game, and I've played it on every platform it's coming out for now. Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, and yes, even the PlayStation Vita version which was just announced. The demos I played were all based on underwater levels like the one you see in the video above. The stealth aspect was pretty neat, as you can't just go running through it without a care in the world like other levels. Then I got to play musical Mariachi Madness stage that was a lot of fun, but super difficult to master. My hands-on time wrapped up by fighting this giant crazy robotic dragon that's going to require a lot of communication with your friends if you find yourself playing through it cooperatively. Communication in the form of "stop f*cking up and do what I say goddammit!" Trust me, it's fun. Rayman is largely the same on each platform with some minor differences here and there. The important thing is that they all have wonderful visuals, the gameplay is solid, and the entire concept is so damn charming. Really, it's a no-brainer picking up Rayman Legends when it's released on September 3 in the US and on August 30 in Europe.
EA's Online Passes free on Xbox Live Posted: 30 May 2013 03:45 AM PDT [Update: EA has commented about the price, indicating that all previous Online Passes will become free on both XBLA and PSN "over the next several weeks."] It seems that EA wasn't just thinking about the Xbox One when it mentioned dropping the ever-so-popular Online Pass system that punishes consumers for purchasing a game used by adding an extra fee. On Xbox Live (sorry PS3 owners!) many of the Online Passes have been made completely free, as this NeoGAF thread details. How long they'll remain free is currently unknown. Maybe this is a goof on their part, or maybe EA is shifting all of their focus and servers to the Xbox One, meaning that these games may not even have an online mode for much longer. Regardless, if you own or plan to own any of these games used, now might be a good time to snatch up this oh-so-generous deal. How nice of you, EA. EA makes some online passes free on XBL [NeoGAF]
Theatrhythm OST finally coming, spans five discs Posted: 30 May 2013 03:30 AM PDT Theatrhythm is still one of my favorite games for the 3DS, and probably even my iPhone. It would make sense, given the game's focus on music, that a soundtrack album would have be released, but it's eluded us... until now.
Posted: 30 May 2013 03:00 AM PDT It's always refreshing to be introduced to a game mechanic that you've never quite seen before. It's even better when that game takes said mechanic and elevates it to something pure and sublime, something that, to borrow a cliché, can always be replicated but never exactly duplicated. In a few ways, The Swapper reminded me of Super Metroid. Not in terms of gameplay (this is a puzzle game, not a Metroidvania), but rather its cosmic setting, similar-looking map overlay, and oh yeah doors that look exactly like those in Super Metroid. It takes some serious gall to create an allusion to such a classic game, since doing so immediately brings to mind thoughts of top quality and legacy. Luckily, The Swapper can get away with it just fine.
Killer Is Dead getting premium edition version Posted: 30 May 2013 02:00 AM PDT Deep Silver has revealed Killer Is Dead will be getting a premium edition. It will include a bonus "Beauty & The Beast & The Lingerie" download, the "Temptation of Miss Vampire" gigolo mission, one extra episode and a reversible cover. It will also include a "peeping tool" which helps our hero prepare for gigolo missions. Because of course. It won't, however, cost more than the regular edition, so this is more like a series of rewards for buying it brand new. Game is slated for a rough "summer" North American release, and is due for Xbox 360 and PS3.
Rain for PS3 gets a new trailer and screens Posted: 30 May 2013 01:00 AM PDT Rain, a PS3 adventure starring an invisible boy who can only be outlined by rainfall, has a new trailer and screenshots today. They're worth gawping at, because this is shaping up to be one stylistically pretty game. If Sony did one thing right this generation, it was making sure the PlayStation Network had titles like this. I'm excited to see if Rain is as good as it looks, but either way, I'm glad the PSN has interesting and gorgeous little things like this on it. I hope the PS4 continues the trend.
Things go boom in the latest Company of Heroes 2 trailer Posted: 30 May 2013 12:00 AM PDT The latest look at Company of Heroes 2 shows off just how action packed this real time strategy game is. There's action, explosions, and death all around you in the battlefield. There's so much action here that the trailer even says you should check this one out before you play "the next big FPS." Oh, snap! Company of Heroes 2 will be out on June 25 for the PC.

20 minutes supercut of videogame references in movies Posted: 29 May 2013 09:00 PM PDT Here's the ultimate supercut of videogame related references from dozens upon dozens of different Hollywood movies. Not movies based on games, just movies that referenced games in some way. Whether it was just a random throwaway joke, or some kind of brawl within an arcade, this supercut seems to have compiled nearly all of them together. Granted, there was no Grandma's Boy clip. What the hell?! [Via The Awesomer]
| K.K. Slider covers Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky' Posted: 29 May 2013 08:00 PM PDT YouTube user Alex Romero made this little mashup featuring K.K. Slider in place of Pharrell Williams in Daft Punk's "Get Lucky." Nothing mind blowing, but if you enjoy K.K. Slider's demonic voice and the Daft Punk single, then you're in for a good time. | Posted: 29 May 2013 07:00 PM PDT Deadpool is off visiting the Marvel HQ to promote the Deadpool game. You know, because the Marvel headquarters totally needs to be reminded about his game. Still, it makes for some nice funny bits as he harasses the various employees. As for the game itself, Highmoon Studios today revealed their little vision of Wolverine. Surprise, he looks like Wolverine, yellow spandex and all. Deadpool has a nice little welcoming message for the leader of the X-Men below. |
League of Legends 'A Twist of Fate' cinematic is amazing Posted: 29 May 2013 06:00 PM PDT Here's your chance to watch your favorite champions from League of Legends battle it out in a high-quality cinematic trailer. It's over four minutes long, and it's really well done. The main character here is Twisted Fate, but other champions like Annie and Ryze are involved. Riot also released a behind the scenes look at the creation of the trailer. They expressed that doing a CG trailer "allows us to bring our champions to life. It allows us to get up close and personal with our champions in a completely unconstrained way." The quality is really good, so I would love to see them make more stuff like this.
| The Daily Hotness: Super Guitar Bros. Posted: 29 May 2013 04:59 PM PDT I saw these guys perform at the most recent MAGfest, and immediately wanted to buy a CD. They didn't have any. They just have these videos. This is one of them. If you haven't heard these guys yet, watch everything of theirs. You're welcome. Today Fraser reviewed The Night of the Rabbit, Hamza showed us a punny new shirt, Dale fibbed a bit on how far along Final Fantasy XIII Versus is, Tony showed us a video detailing all the differences between the US and Japanese versions of Super Mario Bros 3, and a bunch of other things happened.
