A new Final Fantasy IX side quest was discovered

Posted: 27 May 2013 02:30 PM PDT

Our Lord of Lords Jim Sterling considers Final Fantasy IX to be his favorite game in the series. I wish I could share in his exuberance -- though I own a physical copy of FFIX, I've yet to actually play it. This newest discovery, however, may push me to tackle my massive backlog sooner rather than later.

Above is a side quest that eluded FFIX players for 13 years -- it's not even mentioned in the official guidebook! It's available on the fourth disc, and the end result is the Protect Ring, which halves elemental damage on top of offering a bunch of other treats. Just follow the steps in the YouTube description to clear the quest.

In an age where everything you could ever want to know about a game is just a Google search away, it's refreshing to know that there are secrets left uncovered. It makes me wonder what else we've yet to unearth in our favorite games of yesteryear.

eBay Germany supports Wii U's lack of restrictions

Posted: 27 May 2013 01:00 PM PDT

Whoever manages eBay Germany's Facebook page must be a huge Nintendo fan -- or at least is a master at capitalizing on current gamer worries and frustrations.

It's apparent that Xbox One is charting a dark path, and the jury's still out on whether PS4 will follow suit. That leaves Wii U as the only machine we know for certain is not saddled with the same level of anti-consumer "features." With that in mind, eBay Germany took to Facebook to post a picture of the Wii U ZombiU bundle with the following caption:

-Keine Gebraucht-Spiel-Sperren
-Keine Online-Pflicht
-Kein Gedöns

Translated, it reads, "No used-game locks, no online requirement, no fuss."

Ice cold!

Nintendo Download Europe: Link, he come to town

Posted: 27 May 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Big doings across the pond this week, as the The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons / Ages arrive on the 3DS Virtual Console. These Capcom-developed Game Boy Color adventures are two standalone parts of an overarching tale. Nintendo has made it easier to enjoy the complete experience by temporarily pricing each game at €4.99 -- it'll climb up to the normal price of €5.99 after June 20.

Also coming to the 3DS eShop are The "Denpa" Men 2: Beyond the Waves (£8.99 / €9.99), sequel to The "Denpa" Men: They Came by Wave, plus the tunnel racer SpeedX 3D Hyper Edition (€1.99). You'll also be able to grab Mario & Sonic at the London Olympic Games (€39.99).

On Wii U, the balls-hard Ghosts 'n Goblins (€4.99) hits the Virtual Console, but if you already own Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, you'll be able to snag it for €2.49 through June 6. Toki Tori 2 is also getting discounted to €11.24 through June 6, while Chasing Aurora is permanently dropping to €6.49. And finally, the Wii gets some love with The King of Fighters '98 for 900 points.

Jimquisition: When The Starscreams Kill Used Games

Posted: 27 May 2013 08:00 AM PDT

The Xbox One will kill used games and control second-hand sales, and some people think that's great. Jim Sterling is not among them.

While members of the gaming media attempt to see the positive side of murdering the used game market and snubbing retailers, all Jimquisition can see are greedy, cowardly Starscreams, waiting to sieze power and do terrible things with it.

Because that's what they do, and we have no reason to believe otherwise.

Crypt of the NecroDancer is a roguelike/rhythm mash-up

Posted: 27 May 2013 07:00 AM PDT

If I ever find myself locked in a dungeon, dancing will be my escape; this is what the trailer for Brace Yourself Games' Crypt of the NecroDancer has taught me. The game -- "a hardcore rhythm-based roguelike" -- is a veritable new one, as far as I can tell. In it, you'll perform actions to the beat in procedurally-generated dungeons. Just ... watch the trailer. It'll make sense.

If you have any concerns about the music quality itself, know that notable game composers DannyB and Alec Holowka are attached to NecroDancer. And since you can also load your own MP3s into the game, there shouldn't be anything to worry about on that front.

Dust: An Elysian Tail has been released for Steam

Posted: 27 May 2013 06:00 AM PDT

Did you spend any time this weekend playing the newly-released PC version of Dust: An Elysian Tail? If not, that seems like a damn fine way to spend your Memorial Day.

The 2D action-RPG is out now on Steam for $13.49 with achievements, cloud saving, and gamepad support -- no Games for Windows Live, despite the publisher being Microsoft Studios. You have until the end of the month to save 10 percent on Dust before it jumps back up to $15, so keep that in mind. Another good score for PC gamers, wouldn't you say?

Mojang's open beta for Scrolls kicks off next week

Posted: 27 May 2013 05:00 AM PDT

The card-centric strategy title Scrolls will be available in an open beta capacity for PC and Mac starting June 3, 2013. This is Mojang, so you'll need to pay up -- £13/€15/$20, in this specific case -- to play the work-in-progress game. Here's a launch trailer to catch you up to speed.

Did Mojang fans at large ever come around? I seem to recall Scrolls garnering criticism for being what it is, which felt inevitable coming off of Minecraft. I'm not particularly into card games either, but I did enjoy Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes and I am seeing a bit of that here.

Blow: Microsoft's lying about Xbox One cloud power

Posted: 27 May 2013 04:00 AM PDT

Microsoft has been making a big deal about the "infinite power of the cloud," claiming it'll make the Xbox One more powerful, with enhanced, superior games. Jonathan Blow, the man behind Braid and The Witness, disagrees, going so far as to say Microsoft's lying to us.

"More cloud processing BS," Tweeted Blow, slamming Microsoft's claims. "Someone please call their bluff on this.

"Also, someone please ask if these fabled 300,000 servers are real hardware, or just the total size of Windows Azure (which then implies XBL would only ever get a portion of that). To put it more concretely: a journalist could compute the installation and yearly maintenance cost for 300,000 servers, and then ask Microsoft where that VERY LARGE chunk of money is coming from (And how it could possibly make business sense for a game console)."

Answering questions from his followers, Blow further explained why he feels Microsoft is spinning us a line of crap.

Xbox One will be region locked, because of course it will

Posted: 27 May 2013 02:30 AM PDT

Because the Xbox One wasn't pissing off potential early adopters enough, here's a bit of an obvious one for you -- Microsoft has confirmed the system will be region locked. At this point, such news was a foregone conclusion.

"Similar to the movie and music industry, games must meet country-specific regulatory guidelines before they are cleared for sale," said Microsoft, with its increasingly characteristic vagueness. "We will continue to work with our partners to follow these guidelines with Xbox One."

The Xbox 360, works with partial region locking, leaving it up to the publisher whether or not a disc is tied to a single territory. The PS3, by contrast, seemed to get along just fine without region locks (save for like, one game), despite what Microsoft weakly says about having to comply with regulations.

At this rate, I think I'm more pissed off by that weakness than the actual anti-consumer spittle being dribbled into the Xbox One. Microsoft's milky, buck-passing, damp little attempts to give out non-answers and impalpable half-statements are making this whole situation more aggravating. If the system is as gleefully pro-corporate as it sounds, the least Microsoft could do is have the balls to own up to it.

"Wah, wah, don't pick on us, music and movies do it tooooo!" Piss off.

Gamers make it clear to Sony they want a DRM-free PS4

Posted: 27 May 2013 01:30 AM PDT

While Microsoft continues to flop around following the revelation of its Xbox One user restrictions, gamers have sensed an opportunity to suggest Sony steal some free PR points, campaigning for a DRM-free PlayStation 4.

Sources have suggested Sony is watching the fallout of the Xbox One reveal very closely, and using it to inform its own decisions. That in mind, NeoGAF decided to communicate with key Sony personnel on Twitter and request en masse a PlayStation 4 free of online access requirements and anti-used games systems.

Using the hashtags #PS4noDRM and #PS4UsedGames, gamers are messaging the likes of Shuhei Yoshida and Scott Rhode with their concerns.

The response so far has been huge, the idea spreading from GAF to all manner of online communities. In the writing of that last sentence, another twenty #PS4noDRM tweets were twitted.

Mario movie has a pseudo-official comic sequel

Posted: 26 May 2013 07:00 PM PDT

The Super Mario Bros. movie 20th anniversary celebration continues! After holding a special midnight screening of the pleasantly schlock film, during which John Leguizamo delivered a special pre-recorded message to attendees, Super Mario Bros. The Movie Archive officially kicked off a brand new venture: a sequel webcomic!

Following discussions with Parker Bennet, one of the film's writers, SMB Archive founders Ryan Hoss and Steven Applebaum have penned a script that explores what happened after the movie's cliffhanger ending. With art by Joshua Ballze, president of Jurassic Con, we're getting the sequel that we never asked for yet secretly wanted to see happen just for kicks and giggles.

The first chapter has gone live, and from the cover art, it looks like Shy Guys will be making their debut soon. Does this mean we can expect Wart to be the Big Bad this time around? I can't believe I'm actually talking about this. It's an actual thing!
