| The ecstacy of Smooth McGroove's VG a cappellas Posted: 25 May 2013 01:00 PM PDT I've tried my very best to avoid sharing too much of Smooth McGroove's kickass a cappella arrangements. Not because I think he's lost his Midas touch, but because I didn't want to be held responsible for making heads explode out of sheer delight. But I couldn't hold back any longer and decided to cram his past two months of work into a single post. Please listen at your own risk. If you still haven't subscribed to the channel of this singing sack of facial hair, hit up each of the seven songs posted on this page and soak 'em in. He's covered the Moon theme from DuckTales, the Chemical Plant Zone theme from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, "Corridors of Time" from Chrono Trigger, and others. You wanna talk variety? He even arranged an obscure track from Touhou Koumakyou ~ the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, a bullet hell PC shmup from 2002! Enjoy the Saturday night entertainment, duders! | Retro game music bundle: I'd buy that for a dollar Posted: 25 May 2013 12:00 PM PDT We've covered a lot of these game music bundles in the past, so I'll cut right to the chase. This one features some never-before-released albums along with an exclusive Duke Nukem remix collection featuring Jake "virt" Kaufman, Disasterpeace, and a ton of other talented artists. If the exclusive remix CD wasn't enough, there's also a remastered version of the Myst soundtrack along with tons of Duke Nukem, Jazz Jackrabbit, and even some more recently-released retro soundtracks. |
| Pac-man, the cocky, pinstripe suit-wearing noir hero Posted: 25 May 2013 11:00 AM PDT A hyper-stylized version of Pac-Man that exaggerates the violence of the rather tame arcade original? Yeah, we've gone down that road before. "Goodnight Sweet Pakman" may be no different in that regard, but I can't stop watching the opening 40 seconds over and over again. That A Night at the Roxbury head bob gets me every single time! Goodnight Sweet Pakman [YouTube] |
| NEOGEO X getting a 15-game 'Mega Pack' collection Posted: 25 May 2013 10:00 AM PDT The NEOGEO X is a curious piece of hardware. On one hand, it's a bit pricey for what it offers, especially considering that you can't pop in actual NEOGEO AES cartridges. On the other hand, goddamn, is it a sexy-looking piece! The system came pre-loaded with 20 titles (plus a limited 21st game card for Ninja Master's), but a new "Mega Pack" scheduled to release across North America on June 25 will expand that library by 15. Coming out on the same day are five previously announced "Classics" packs that break apart the "Mega Pack" collection as follows:
Every pack will include a travel charging cable and a system update that offers control tweaks, audio fixes, and even a new save state feature. According to Amazon, the "Classics" will each run $24.99, while the "Mega Pack" will run $79.99. Amazon also curiously lists the release date as June 6, but I'd trust the official press release over that. |
| Pokemon Fusion is so hot right now Posted: 25 May 2013 09:00 AM PDT Web developer and Product Guy Alex Onsager made a website that allows you to fuse Pokemon together to make new Pokemon. As of right now there are about 121 different compatible Pokemon, putting the potential combinations into the thousands. The app has put a flame to the collective ass of the Pokemon fan art community, and the results have been amazing. Path, by Teenage Pokemon character designer Astrobats, is a personal favorite. Alex collected a bunch of his favorite fusions here, but there are a whole heck of a lot more on Tumblr. It seems like combining Cubone, Zubat, Paras, and Magemite with anything is guaranteed creepy fun. Why not make some fusions and report back in the comments? |
| Amazon graduation deals feature discounted Gears, Riptide Posted: 25 May 2013 08:00 AM PDT Are you a graduate of this fine year? Well, congratulations to you! But even if you're not, you may still want to head on over to Amazon's Graduation Deals page, as they've discounted titles like Gears of War: Judgment, Dead Island: Riptide, Black Ops 2 and even some accessories. Gears of War: Judgment and Dead Island: Riptide Special Edition are each currently listed at $39.99, and a 12-month subscription for Xbox Live Gold is priced at $47.81. Other notables include discounted Dualshock 3 controllers, Arkham City: Armored Edition and WWE '13. There's no listing as to when these deals are over, so act fast. |
| New Awesomenaut Ayla voiced by Ashly Burch Posted: 25 May 2013 07:00 AM PDT The insane 2D MOBA Awesomenauts has been trucking along for a full year, continuously being updated with new characters, maps, and other goodies -- on Windows and Mac, of course. Developer Ronimo Games is not through with the game yet and has prepared a brand new character for you all happy people. During a special TwitchTV livestream yesterday, the devs pulled the lid back on Ayla, the spunky devil girl who can encase herself in a massive psychokinetic rage sphere for heavy close-range damage. And who voices the young lass? None other than Ashly Burch (mistakenly credited as "Ashly Durst") from Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin'? Ash already has experience portraying clinically insane children, like Tiny Tina in Borderlands 2, so this role is the perfect fit for her. You can catch the first part of the livestream above, while the rest can be found over here. Awesomenauts Ayla Livestream Part 1 [YouTube] (Thanks, Luis!) |
| This TowerFall trailer actually makes me want an OUYA Posted: 25 May 2013 06:00 AM PDT Matt Thorson, creator of some of the best indie games out there, has just released a new trailer for his upcoming OUYA game, TowerFall. Looking to capture the same intensity of late night local multiplayer play sessions as Smash Bros. or GoldenEye, it's an "Archery Platformer" that has you competing with up to three of your friends for victory in a deathmatch arena. Arrows will slightly home in on opponents, but you need to be careful because ammo is limited. There are also treasure chests containing powerups around the map, which are no doubt going to be highly contested. It seems like a really intense and enjoyable experience, though it is temporarily exclusive to the OUYA. Mr. Thorson has said he wants to bring it to the PC, so us non-OUYA users will just have to wait. |
| Dtoid TV Weekend: This is not a Memorial Day post Posted: 25 May 2013 05:00 AM PDT Every time there's some kind of event happening relevant to me and I choose to post about it, I get, "Waaah, we're Europeans," or, "Waaah, there's more to the Earth than just America." And you know what? You're right. Which is why I'm not going to make any mention of this weekend being some kind of holiday. Not doing it. What this weekend truly represents is an opportunity for you to hang out with us over at Dtoid TV. It kicks off right now as Jordan and I leap into New Super Mario Bros. Wii for some madcap local multiplayer. |
| Netflix accessible to Xbox Live Free members this weekend Posted: 25 May 2013 04:00 AM PDT As many fans of the series already know, Arrested Development has been revived by Netflix for a fourth season, which is set to premiere this Sunday. To celebrate, Microsoft is allowing those with an Xbox Live Free Membership to access the Netflix app on Xbox Live. The app will be accessible to those who have a Netflix subscription in the following countries this weekend: U.S., Canada, U.K., Ireland, Brazil, Mexico, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Chile, Colombia and Argentina. Anyone here anticipating season four? |
| Microsoft: Xbox One reports 'inaccurate and incomplete' Posted: 25 May 2013 02:00 AM PDT Microsoft, by way of mouthpiece Major Nelson, has criticized reports on its Xbox One used game policy as "inaccurate and incomplete," seeming to miss the fact they're based entirely on Microsoft's own statements -- which have themselves been inaccurate and far, far from complete. "The ability to trade in and resell games is important to gamers and to Xbox," said Nelson, vaguely. "Xbox One is designed to support the trade in and resale of games. Reports about our policies for trade in and resale are inaccurate and incomplete. We will disclose more information in the near future." Reports are inaccurate and incomplete? Whose fault is that, Microsoft? In the days following the Xbox One reveal, Microsoft's representatives have floundered and flustered, seeming to lack a unified statement for a topic an idiot should've known would come up. The company's been contradictory and noncommittal for days -- of course reports are going to reflect that. Nelson's statement absolutely does not help, either. These ambiguous non-comments are just adding to the obfuscating noise that has been the past week of quasi-information. Clearing up inaccuracies by saying more of the things that led to any inaccuracy isn't exactly a way to get an accurate message out there, folks. I'm shocked Nelson called this a clarification. The only thing it clarifies is that Microsoft has a pathological need to talk directly out of its arsehole. |
| Latest Anamanaguchi music video sends pizza into space Posted: 25 May 2013 01:00 AM PDT You may have heard that chip rockers Anamanaguchi have a new album, Endless Fantasy, in the works. The musical neon riders previously uploaded a video for the song "Meow" off the album, and now they follow up with one for the title track itself. If you like watching girls sending hot New York slices up into the stratosphere via weather balloon, I think you are gonna love this. Oh, and they've also got the whole album streaming on YouTube. Yeah, son! Get all up on dat! Anamanaguchi -「ENDLESS FANTASY」 [YouTube via Tiny Cartridge] |
| Mega Man X pew pews onto Wii U eShop on May 30 Posted: 24 May 2013 10:00 PM PDT Do you know why the above trailer is so amazing? Because X throws a Hadoken at Vile's ride armor at the 0:22 mark like he just doesn't give a f*ck. Of the games in the Mega Man X series, the first is definitely the best. Some clowns like to bestow that distinction upon X4, but those people are wacky tobacky and I don't listen to 'em. I stick my fingers in my ears and go, "NUH NUH NUH NUH NUH!" This coming Thursday, May 30, the SNES masterpiece arrives on Wii U's Virtual Console. Unless it relates to EarthBound, there probably isn't much reason to announce any VC game's release date ahead of time. But this is Mega Man X, ladies, so it earns special privileges. |
| GameStop stock drops following Xbox One reveal Posted: 24 May 2013 07:00 PM PDT As if the fallout from the Xbox One reveal on Tuesday couldn't get any weirder, along comes news that GameStop stock ended the trading week down 19%. The company's share price had been dropping steadily throughout the week, at one point hitting a low of $30.94, and now sits at $32.11. Following the Xbox One presentation, representatives were a bit cagey on whether or not the console would be able to play used games or if there was some kind of fee involved. We later learned that Microsoft is hoping to broker a deal with retailers that will allow publishers to earn a cut of used sales while the game discs themselves undergo some convoluted deactivation / authentication process that still hasn't been explained properly. All this resulted in fear for GameStop's future, hence the stock plummet. I understand that GameStop isn't everyone's favorite entity, but losing the biggest used games supplier in the world, should that come to pass, would be catastrophic. As it stands, small businesses and individual resellers are already going to be up the creek without a paddle. GameStop stock doing down, Wii U sales going up -- it must be Topsy Turvy Day! | The Daily Hotness: One hundred billion dollars! Posted: 24 May 2013 04:59 PM PDT In a recent interview with OXM, Microsoft made the bold statement that they expect all next-gen systems to sell a total of one billion units, which is why they must focus so much on the non-game related functionally of the Xbox One. The genius! So apparently Microsoft has figured out that if their next console does this many of things, and people want that many of things, then they will sell about a billion of their Xbox One things. Because reason and math. This all makes sense the less you think about it. Today, more whispers hit the rumor mill, as its seems Microsoft will be demanding a cut of used games sales from retailers. Wii U sales also enjoyed a nice little bump following the Xbox One announcement, and Ashley Burch is the defender of all things mousey in this week's HAWP. Brett stands in defense of Microsoft's reveal, Chris has a few thoughts on platform fandom, and the minds behind Euro Truck Simulator are back to their mundane-into-magic tricks again with Chemical Spillage Simulation.
