Free Revengeance VR missions will be available next week

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 03:30 PM PST

Remember that promise to PlayStation 3 players of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance that they would receive exclusive VR missions as downloadable content? And no, not that other DLC that was announced.

Well, starting next Tuesday, March 12, they will be available to you as a free download all the way through April 3. Featuring the look of the original VR missions from Metal Gear Solid (read that again, seriously), the pack will include 30 brand-new missions that feature unique challenges. Maybe you'll need some tips to make sure your skills are up to par?

Oh, if you've yet to pick up the game, you can now buy the game on PlayStation Network for $59.99. If that's your thing, of course. Anyway, I'm assuming there's nothing stopping me from just jumping on PSN and downloading this myself next week, you know,  just in case I do ever pick it up on PS3. If I can't, I'm pretty sure this will be coming to Xbox at some point anyway as a paid download. That's how these types of things usually go these days.

New Injustice trailer shows off the 'Red Son' pack

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 03:00 PM PST

The Injustice development team shared a video detailing the "Red Son" content players will be able to get for the upcoming fighting game. There will be alternate costumes for Superman and Wonder Woman based on their looks during the "What if" storyline for Superman. They've also created a new costume for Solomon Grundy to fit the theme as well.

This isn't just a costume pack, either. Players will get an additional 20 missions in the scenario mode based around the Red Son comic.

Below is another video from Injustice that shows off some of the story stuff from Lex Luthor if you're in the need for some more superhero fighting.

That Gore Verbinski Kinect game got canceled

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 02:30 PM PST

Hey remember when Microsoft announced during their E3 2012 conference that they teamed up with Gore Verbinski to make a Kinect game called Matter? Anyone? No? Yeah, well it's been canceled.

"Microsoft Studios is no longer pursuing this title," a company Microsoft representative told Joystiq. "We have no further details to share at this time."

Microsoft teamed up with the Pirates of the Caribbean movie director to make a game about a Portal 2 Core fighting future flying boxes with arms. Or something. I don't know. The trailer was weird then, and it's still weird now.

It's odd a Kinect game was canceled. I mean, I thought the Kinect was supposed to be the future of gaming! It's almost as if the Kinect doesn't ... Matter anymore.

Kickstarter: There Came an Echo stars Wil Wheaton

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 02:00 PM PST

Iridium Studios, who previously developed the Kickstarter-funded rhythm RPG Sequence, have unveiled their next project, and are once again turning to the crowdfunding site to help produce their game. In a departure demonstrating the studio's eclectic nature, There Came an Echo is neither rhythm-based nor RPG, but rather it is a voice controlled real-time strategy game, akin to Tom Clancy's EndWar.

It's not much to look at currently, but the fully customizable voice commands appear to work well in the prototype footage shown. For star power, Wil Wheaton has signed on to voice the protagonist Corrin, and Ronald Jenkees, Jimmy Hinson, and Judith de los Santos will all be contributing to the soundtrack. Really, all that appears to be missing is the artwork.

The funding total is currently just over $60,000 of the $90,000 goal with fifteen days left in the campaign.

Contra 4, Double Dragon Neon dev forms new studio

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 01:30 PM PST

[Update: The Yatch Club Games Twitter profile is up with a little shadowy sprite in the top left corner of the banner image. The Facebook page has even more shrouded figures. What does this mean?!? I know, but I can't tell you. It's pretty great though]

Yacht Club Games is the newest game studio in the world, headed up by none other than former WayForward developer Sean Velasco. Sean and the gang have some big announcements coming in March. I've gotten a sneak peek at some of them, and I can vouch for their potency. Sadly, there isn't too much more to say at the moment. The press release below will catch you up to speed on the rest.

In the meantime, take a walk down memory lane in the gallery, which has been supplied with some screenshots from Sean's past games (including A Boy and his Blob, Contra 4, Bloodrayne: Betrayal, Double Dragon: Neon, and many more), and begin anticipating your future with the Yacht Club. I think you're going to like it.

Latest Deadpool trailer looks appropriately juvenile

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 01:00 PM PST

If you're like me, then your most anticipated comic book-related videogame event of the year is none other than Deadpool: The Game. Making us even more excited is the latest trailer called The Game's Juvenile But Awesome that dropped today. This is the first really good, long look we've had of the game, and I'll just say this right up front: it doesn't disappoint.

Deadpool starts describing a dark and atmospheric scenario, then comes to the conclusion that that's lame as hell. This is when he cuts to an insane montage of himself shooting the sh*t out of everything and giving us a glimpse of his huge wall of guns. Does this mean there will be tons to unlock? Between all that, there's even a shot of Deadpool feeling Cable's... "man bazookas." I'll let just let that sit there.

Daniel Way is known for his run of the character being very hit and miss. I sincerely hope the game ends up being more hit than miss, and from what I've seen of the couple short trailers, that looks to be the case. But only time will tell come this Summer.

Project Awakened fails to meet Kickstarter goal

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 12:30 PM PST

In another reminder that Kickstarter isn't the surefire way to fund your game, the impressive-looking Project Awakened has failed its Kickstarter drive. Developer Phosphor Games raised $338,498 of its required target of $500,000. The game's future is uncertain now but given the trailers we've seen, it would be a shame for the Project Awakened to totally disappear.

It seems for every Torment: Tides of Numenera, there's a fresh new IP that fails to succeed in its bid for funding. Whilst crowdfunding has helped titles like Akaneiro and Skullgirls, there's a feeling that backers aren't prepared to put money into a project that doesn't at least have a recognized developer or IP involved. Hopefully that will change and crowdfunding will help get more new and fresh videogames made.

Torment: Tides of Numenera: A billion years in the making

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 12:00 PM PST

With the ridiculously speedy success of inXile's Kickstarter for Torment: Tides of Numenera, it's only a matter of time until we'll be diving into the role of the Last Cast-off, the title's protagonist. I got up to speed on what we can expect from the setting and the story when I spoke with inXile's Kevin Saunders and Colin McComb earlier this week, and you can see the full extent of the interview right now.

We chatted up quite the storm, so the rather intriguing premise and setting of the Ninth World may be a bit buried under a mountain of information. If you're just interested in what the hell Numenera is all about, then I've got you covered here.

Papo & Yo creator on risk, therapy, and future of gaming

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 11:45 AM PST

Last Sunday's Sup Holmes (now on iTunes) was a powerful one. The subject was Papo & Yo, one of the first openly autobiographical games to hit home consoles. Vander Caballero created the game based on his relationship with his his father. Themes include love, addiction, and  abuse, all explored through a dreamlike surrealism that draws parallels to Pan's Labyrinth or Life of Pi.

In our long, varied discussion, Vander revealed that as a child, videogames gave him an escape from a abuse but did not give him the tools to deal with the trauma he was set to endure. With Papo & Yo, he wanted to make a game that would have the potential to provide both escape and a therapeutic outlet to those who played it, while also sharing his life and experience with the world.

Watch Dogs loses its lead game designer to EA

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 11:30 AM PST

Upcoming Ubisoft title Watch Dogs has experienced a potential setback after the departure of lead designer Jamie Keen, who has defected to EA Gothenburg. VideoGamer.com is reporting that Keen, who was also a lead designer on Far Cry 3 apparently left Ubisoft Montreal to re-join EA in February this year.

It doesn't look like a big surprise looking at his previous positions, especially having worked on previous EA games such as Battlefield Bad Company and Syndicate. Hopefully this is a case of EA making Keen an offer he can't refuse rather than an indication of any potential problems with Watch Dogs, as I'm really looking forward to seeing how that game turns out.

Far Cry 3 writer suggests upcoming content

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 11:15 AM PST

Far Cry 3 was one of the darlings of the gaming world in 2012 and, according to lead writer Jeffrey Yohalem, Ubisoft plans to capitalize on its popularity.

In an interview with Joystiq, Yohalem said ""Yes," I'm working on something now that will be surprising, I think, when it's announced. But it definitely is a 'strike while the iron's hot' thing, and we'll see."

One of the possibilities for this content may be a new downloadable title called Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, as a game by that name has been registered in Brazil. Some DLC wouldn't necessarily be surprising, but an entirely new game would certainly fit the bill.

However, it's not as if Ubisoft has stopped supporting Far Cry 3. They just released a large patch to add many features that were requested by players.

Another day, another Deus Ex trademark registered

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 11:00 AM PST

We've had a flurry of activity about recent trademarks concerning the Deus Ex franchise which turned out to be the movie and a re-classified Australian version of 2011's Deus Ex Human Revolution. Now, a sharp eyed tweet has pointed us towards domains being registered for Deus Ex The Fall.

Domain registrations aren't a true indicator of a game's existence; a studio will register a dozen domains to mask the true title and there's plenty of viral sites that will be registered too. This could be a tie-in-novel, animated movie, iOS title ... there's plenty of options there. Also, Eidos Montreal are going to be real busy with the Thief reboot for a while yet.

That being said, The Fall conjures up all kinds of images in my brain; the secession of the states and the formation of the NSF, the beginning of the Grey Death, the bombing of the Statue of Liberty. My guess is that Deus Ex: The Fall would be an apt title indeed.

Human Defiance wasn't the name of the next Deus Ex, but this might be [@superannuation, image]

Dead Space needs a break, SimCity launch woes and Thief!

In another casual discussion from Dtoid's virtual news room, I'm joined by Jordan Devore and Spencer Hayes to discuss the deflated rumor of a Dead Space development hiatus (one we kind of wish were true).

Plus, SimCity's rocky launch demonstrates once again that you can't count on anybody to successfully launch an online-only game and the gang discusses the recently announced Thief reboot.

Suda 51's Liberation Maiden soaring to iOS

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 10:30 AM PST

Well, this is unexpected. Liberation Maiden has arrived on the iTunes App Store in New Zealand. One of my favorite titles of last year, the Grasshopper Manufacture shmup originally launched on 3DS as a part of Level-5's Guild01 compilation before making its way to other territories as a stand-alone downloadable release.

Liberation Maiden is available for $6.49 NZD on the App Store, which would be slightly less than its asking price on the Nintendo eShop. It's likely we can expect a worldwide release within the day.

Far Cry 3 has received a massive patch

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 10:15 AM PST

Ubisoft has released a new patch for Far Cry 3 which implements a number of features requested by players. Among the biggest changes are the addition of a new difficulty mode, "MASTER," and the option to reset liberated outposts so that they may be challenged again after finishing the campaign.

There are also new HUD options allowing for the toggling of most of the visual information elements. Multiplayer map makers now have the option of running beta tests of their stages before sending them out to the world to play, while players are now able to search for maps by author. Players are being given more time to vote on skipping a map also, and the idle kick timer has been plucked from private and custom matches.

That's a nice little update, packing in expansion of the content with some user features I can see people being very happy about. Good show Ubi.

My hopes and dreams for the new Thief

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 10:00 AM PST

I'm bursting at the seams with hopes and dreams at the moment. It must be a spring thing, though looking outside my window, I'm hard pressed to imagine that we're entering a new season. It's positively gloomy outside, clouds blocking out all light and smothering everything in a bleak shadow. Speaking of shadows, many of my hopes and dreams are aimed directly at Thief, a title that no doubt many of you are sparing a thought for at the moment.

It's a franchise that, I feel, has done right by us even when it changed quite a bit with Deadly Shadows, and it's rather wonderful that it's risen, or rising, from the dead after we feared it gone forever. We're approaching nine years since we last saw a new game in the series, and a whopping 13 years since the high point of Thief II: The Metal Age, so things have changed. I've changed. And what I want out of the new Thief isn't necessarily simply a return to what made me adore the first three games, though that certainly wouldn't be a bad thing either.

First MLG competition of the year begins next week

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 09:45 AM PST

MLG's Winter Championship will begin on March 15 and run until the 17, with $170,000 worth of prize money up for grabs. The featured games are StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm, League of Legends, and Black Ops II. MLG sure is pushing Black Ops II as an eSport, despite the era of FPS competitive games seemingly behind us.

The competition will take place at the Dallas Convention Center and tickets to go live and in person are available through the MLG store. Streaming will be free up to 720p HD, but if you want some of that sweet 1080p action, you're going to have to upgrade. Can't say much about the Black Ops or League of Legend commentators, but the StarCraft II ones are the cream of the crop, including Day[9], DJ Wheat, and Husky.

BioShock Infinite characters perform duet on soundtrack

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 09:15 AM PST

Who among you is picking up the "Ultimate Songbird Edition" or "Premium Edition" of BioShock Infinite? If you're in either one of those camps, I'm sure you know that there's a shiny (digital) copy of the soundtrack waiting for you in your exclusive edition. Would be nice to know what's going to be on said ablum, huh? Right on cue, Irrational Games was kind enough to give us a detailed breakdown of exactly that!

Featuring 28 tracks, series composer Gary Schyman has returned to create a sonic experience to complement the atmosphere that BioShock is known for. He's done a stellar job in the past, so I can't wait to hear what he brings to the table this time around.

Also shown by Irrational today is a snippet of a duet by Booker DeWitt and Elizabeth's voice talents (Troy Baker and Courtnee Draper, respectively) on the track "Will The Circle Be Unbroken," which is included above for your listening/viewing convenience. It's pretty pleasant, so I'd give that listen if I were you.

Guide: DmC: Devil May Cry: Vergil's Downfall DLC

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 09:00 AM PST

Vergil's Downfall is finally upon us, and after some Bloody Palace tips, I figured it would be a good idea to revisit DmC. When you think about it, tons of people let their games collect dust in a corner somewhere, waiting for potential DLC to come along -- but when they return, they don't find the experience to be a familiar one.

Vergil is sort of similar to Dante at a base level, but his add-on is completely different from the main campaign. Here are some tips to help acclimate yourself to Dante's brother.

Journey wins big at the BAFTA Game Awards

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 08:45 AM PST

Looks like the folks at thatgamecompany might need a new trophy cabinet after Journey picked up five BAFTA Game Awards last night at the ceremony in London. The PlayStation Network title won awards for Artistic Achievement, Audio Achievement, Game Design, Online Multiplayer and Original Music.

Journey wasn't the only downloadable title to win awards; fellow PSN title Unfinished Swan won two awards for Game Innovation and Best Debut and Telltale Games' The Walking Dead won awards for Best Story, Best Mobile and Handheld Award. Elsewhere, iOS puzzler The Room won the award for Best British Game.

Arkane Studio's Dishonored however won Game of the Year with Far Cry 3 and XCOM: Enemy Unknown winning Best Action and Best Strategy Awards respectively. Gabe Newell was also there to be inducted into the BAFTA fellowship alongside other videogame luminaries such as Will Wright and Shigeru Miyamoto.

Along with the trailer comes the announcement that a demo of Army of TWO: The Devil's Cartel will be arriving on March 12, giving you two weeks to make a purchasing decision before the game launches on March 26.

You should feel bad, but games don't want you to

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 08:00 AM PST

You monster.

Outside of the casual and educational spheres, violence abounds in games. Even Mario is violent, albeit not gratuitous. Combative, at least. Much of the game is purely avoiding obstacles, but eventually some form of cartoon, innocuous violence will be necessary for progression, be it dumping turtles in lava or tossing a mustachioed bomb on his royal, explosive tuches. And that's fine. Cartoon violence is one of the ways we handle it, render it inert -- unless a childhood full of Loony Tunes, Tom and Jerry, et al did a number on me -- but that idea is complicated in the realm of purportedly "serious" games in which violence is more....violent.

In his Tomb Raider review, Jim mentions how after the first few hours of the game it sets out to make your adversaries seem as abominable as possible, “to make us hate the antagonists.” He also mentions how the viciously skilled Lara and generally fun gameplay “undermines the whole narrative about the impact of taking human life,” which was the concern that came over me when I played through the Tomb Raider’s first three hours late last year. The killing is too good. Now they have to justify it.

Garry's Mod has earned $22 million to date

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 07:45 AM PST

Garry's Mod, the thing that let's you do all the weird things to Source games like Half-Life 2, has earned about $22 million since it was released over seven years ago. Creator Garry Newman of Facepunch revealed the figure when asked by a fan, but he also added that a lot of the profits have gone to taxes.

"Over 7 years GMod has made about 22 million dollars," Garry shared. "We get less than half of that though. Then the tax man gets a bunch of that. Then when we take money out of the company the tax man gets a bunch of that too."

A lot of Garry's Mod success has been through word of mouth, and the regular features update it gets. Plus, it's only $10. Facepunch is currently working on a Linux version of Garry's Mod, and they're considering a move to Valve's SteamPipe system as well.

Additionally, the team is looking to into creating a new PC game. It's a game Garry has wanted to start on "for ages," and they're trying to get a team together in the office to start work.

InXile talks Torment, story details, and crowd-funding

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 07:30 AM PST

Twelve years ago, Black Isle Studios crafted a plane-hopping, tragic adventure set in the Planescape Dungeons & Dragons setting. With a nameless, amnesiac protagonist who had been both a hero and a villain, the developer explored the question, "What can change the nature of a man?"

Planescape: Torment remains one of the most intriguing and metaphysical role-playing games, and fans -- of which there are many -- have been clamouring for some sort of sequel for about as long as the original has existed. Though Wizards of the Coast still hold on to the IP, clutching at it and refusing to let go, the themes and philosophies behind the game can not be held by any company.

Thus, a thematic sequel, Torment: Tides of Numenera, is being developed by a team of Planescape: Torment and Dungeons & Dragons veterans at inXile. The project's Kickstarter begins today, and I had a wee blether with designers Colin McComb and Kevin Saunders about the crowd-funding route while I tried to ferret out more information about Torment from them.

Review: DmC: Devil May Cry: Vergil's Downfall

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 07:00 AM PST

Ninja Theory had a lot to prove with DmC: Devil May Cry. Not only did they have to appease their fans, but they had to live up to an already existing passionate fanbase, who had come to expect a level of quality worth to the Devil May Cry name.

Depending on who you talked to, they either succeed, or they failed. Personally, I felt like it was somewhere in the middle. While DmC wasn't even close to the franchise pedigree, it was still very much a serviceable action game, and Ninja Theory's best offering to date.

Which brings us to the newest downloadable content after Bloody Palace, a brand new story starring Dante's brother Vergil. Vergil's Downfall is more of the same, and your mileage will drastically vary on how much you enjoyed DmC: Devil May Cry in the first place.

Torment reaches its Kickstarter goal in less than a day

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 06:45 AM PST

InXile's newest roleplaying game and spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment, Torment: Tides of Numenera, has been seeking funding on Kickstarter for well under a day. After three hours, it had already secured half of its $900,000 goal. It's now fully backed.

Sitting pretty at $935,000 at the time of writing this (and likely a whole lot more when you start reading), I think anyone wondering if people really care about Planescape: Torment any more have their answer. I suspect that the project won't struggle to reach its stretch goals either, meaning that the extra writers and art that inXile mentioned desiring will become a reality.

I spoke with Kevin Saunders and Colin McComb from inXile a day ago about the project and their experiences with Kickstarter, so keep an eye out for that later today. They were cautiously optimistic about the potential success of their latest crowd-funding attempt, and now they're probably feeling pretty damn good.

So, who has backed this thing already?

Microsoft is interested in using Kinect tech for tablets

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 06:30 AM PST

Some of us aren't so keen on using Kinect for playing most types of games, but that's not to say the technology doesn't have its applications elsewhere. Can you imagine Microsoft integrating Kinect with laptops or tablets? Chief research and strategy office Craig Mundie can. "You want to be as cheap as possible and physically as small as possible," he said this week at Microsoft's TechForum. "My dream is to get a Kinect into the bezel of something like this [Surface tablet]."

For laptops, "It's not gonna happen tomorrow, but we can see a path towards that sort of thing," he commented. The company isn't quite there yet, however: "There's a whole bunch of problems, not just miniaturization, in designing the sensors so they actually do what you expect them to do in all of the environments." Frankly, I'd rather energy be spent here than on cramming Kinect into games that are better controlled with a gamepad.

Review: Mass Effect 3 Citadel

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 06:00 AM PST

It’s been a while—over seven years, in fact—since Mass Effect was first announced. At the time, it was being pitched as a classic 1970s sci-fi flick that you could play. Your decisions, they said, would have dramatic effects on the final outcome, and your progress would transfer between games—a pretty unique concept at the time.

Now, the degree to which the series lived up to its very lofty goals is very much up for debate, but with Citadel we’ll see the alleged end of the narrative portion of the trilogy. Regardless of how you feel about the combat or the ending to ME3, the multiplayer additions or whatever else – it has become one of the most talked-about series ever. I think they’ve added something worthy of that original vision.

God of War: Ascension will have a co-op horde mode

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 05:45 AM PST

God of War: Ascension's fourth multipalyer mode is Trial of the Gods, a two-player co-op (or solo) mode where you have to face five increasingly difficult waves of enemies. The twist here is that you're racing against the clock while fighting the monsters.

Every beast you kill adds time to your clock, and you'll get bonus time depending on how fast you defeated a wave. Once all five waves are cleared, you'll have to face off against some kind of boss. Any experience gained in Trial of the Gods mode will also go towards upgrading your character in the multiplayer versus modes.

The Caves and Cliffs Multiplayer Map Pack arrives on March 19, 2013, and will cost you 400 Microsoft Points.

Want to know what these maps look like? Well you can't, because we were only provided with these two lame-ass screens in the gallery that don't show anything of substance. Thanks. That's helpful.

Talking JRPG Time and Eternity with Dark Souls producer

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 05:00 AM PST

I met with Kei Hirono, producer on Dark Souls and the upcoming RPG Time and Eternity, at a local hotel. From the ornate, spacious lobby I was guided by an amiable PR fellow around a couple of twists and turns, up a 10-stair, out of commission escalator -- and around a corner to a cozy, severed alcove with several burgundy chairs and low, ambient lighting. Hirono was eating lunch. Some sort of sandwich. It smelled delicious and I had to curb my own hunger. Another afternoon where I haven’t made time to eat yet.

Time and Eternity is at first glance a typical JRPG. I don’t think the announcement trailer, complete with over enthused, comically amorous narration necessarily does it any favors. But then things get complicated, as my talk with Hirono rejects certain aspects of the genre, while retaining others. In some sense, this is like an anti-Tales -- also a Namco Bandai production -- which has my attention.

The players involved outside of Namco Bandai have my attention as well. Time and Eternity is being developed by the very-JRPG-ish Imageepoch, in conjunction with Japanese animation studio Satelight (Macross). The music comes courtesy of composer Yuzo Koshiro, known for his work on Streets of Rage, Ys, Etrian Odyssey, and more.

The Walking Dead Season 2 looking at Fall 2013 release

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 04:45 AM PST

[Update: The article original stated Fall 2014 based off the Eurogamer interview, but as it turns out Season 2 of The Walking Dead is on track for a Fall 2013 release. So sometime this year. Rejoice!]

Eurogamer caught up with Telltale co-founder and CEO Dan Connors after the studio won best story at the BAFTA Game Awards last night and found out we have some time before season two of The Walking Dead is ready.

"We're aiming for fall next year," Dan told Eurogamer.

Dan reconfirmed the news that Telltale has something planned to hold us over until season two arrives as well.

"We'll probably have something to announce fairly soon about what we're going to do," Dan replied when asked about whatever they have planned here, adding that "It'll be different."

Dan also commented on the PlayStation 4, and that he believes season 2 could be on Sony's new console, it just depends on timing. He added that Telltale intends to support everything else as they have, all the way down to the phones.

No plans for more Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 04:30 AM PST

Crystal Dynamics creative director Noah Hughes was asked by OXM if there are any plans to continue the rather terrific Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. Here's what he had to say: "Guardian was a great opportunity to explore things that we may not have done in the pillar franchise titles, but in that case it was co-op. There are no plans to do anything in that series but it was a great opportunity to do something a little bit outside of the core."

If you've played the game, I think you'll agree that such a response is unfortunate. It was one of the better couch co-op games of this console generation and it also appealed to those who aren't necessarily fans of Lara Croft.

Hughes continues by saying "With Guardian of Light, the tone and the story supported side-by-side play in the campaign; this time around [in Tomb Raider], it's less appropriate and we tried to do more of a complementary experience, hoping it would have a lot of replay ability and people can just jump in and have fun. Those are just two of our explorations into multiplayer in the Tomb Raider universe, and we are anxious to see what else we can do in connected play."

EA now says not all games will have microtransactions

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 04:00 AM PST

Electronic Arts was in hot water recently on their views of microtranscations coming to everything they do in the future. Well the company looks to be backtracking a bit as EA's CFO Blake Jorgensen clarified what they meant at the 2013 Wedbush Transformational Technology Conference this week.

"I made a statement in the conference along the lines of 'We'll have microtransactions in our games,' and the community read that to be 'all games,' and that's really not true," stated Blake.

Evidently, what he initially meant was that all their future mobile games will have microtransactions, as all their mobile offerings will be free-to-play. Oh, don't worry though, EA will continue adding to the $60 cost of console and PC games.

"You're going to see extensions off of products like Battlefield Premium which are simply not microtransactions. They are premium services, or additional add-on products or download that we're doing ... it is essentially an extension of the gameplay that allows someone to take a game that they might have played for a thousand hours, and play it for two thousand hours. We want to ensure that consumers are getting value."

As exciting as next-gen can potentially be, I worry about how much more chopped up our game experiences will be. I don't want to live in a future where more game will have over $500 of content to purchase.

Company of Heroes 2 arrives June 25

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 03:30 AM PST

Company of Heroes 2 has been set for a June 25 release date in both North America and Europe. Have to say, I'm really happy for Relic Entertainment on today's news. Things were shaky thanks to the THQ fallout, but I think Relic has found a good home with Sega.

"Our acquisition by Sega has given us the chance to work with a new partner that has a great track record of working with long standing PC franchises," said executive producer Jonathan Dowdeswell. "It gives us great confidence to know that we have a well aligned team working to bring the best experience we can to gamers around the world."

What I've played of Company of Heroes 2 was pretty great, and I think fans of the series are going to really like this one. We'll know for sure in just a few months.

Review: Dollar Dash

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 03:00 AM PST

For the most part, I dig Bomberman-likes. Even though they only come once or twice a year these days, there's nothing quite like powering up a party game and blowing up friends for a few hours.

Dollar Dash is very much a Bomberman-esque title, in that it pits four players in an arena like setting with traps and power-ups, but it tries to mix things up a bit with a special game mode that involves carrying cash to a parked car for points.

Sadly, it's not really enough to make a mark on the genre.

Prepare for zombie war in Zombie Tycoon 2

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 02:45 AM PST

Back in 2009, the small Canada-based Frima Studio developed a quirky little title named Zombie Tycoon where you assumed the role of mad scientist Brainhov and undertook his quest to rule the world with formula Z-fueled zombies. The developer is back with Zombie Tycoon 2: Brainhov's Revenge for PS3 and PS Vita on April 30, 2013.

This time around, Brainhov's former apprentice, Orville Tycoon, has now turned on his master and plans to wage war to claim the world for himself. You can choose whose side to be on, with each one having different characteristics. Brainhov's zombies are fast, frantic, and ravenous, whilst Orville's are slow and bumbling, but more powerful.

Frima promises a decent single-player campaign, though only small details of the multiplayer were divulged at this moment. There's a a one-on-one deathmatch to destroy the opponent's tower, with the ability to control two zombie packs and a monster unit. Leveling up and controlling buildings will also be a feature in the game. Finally it's another Cross Play, Cross Buy title, which means you can invade PS3 & Vita users if you so wish.

Hatsune Miku Project Diva F gets a last lengthy trailer

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 02:00 AM PST

Folks who are fans of both Vocaloids and music games, but not fans of handheld games, have been pretty much out in the cold for the whole of the Hatsune Miku Project Diva series to date. After all, the games have been PSP and PS Vita-exclusive. Even their PS3-based Dreamy Theater spin-offs required ownership of the original portable versions to play.

Despair no more, ye homebound. Sega's bringing Miku to PS3 in the form of Hatsune Miku Project Diva F. Not to be confused with the Vita-based Project Diva f (Japanator's Chris Walden reviewed that one), this newly uppercased installment boasts new songs (for a total of 39, naturally), new costumes, and spiffier graphics. And it's out this Thursday, March 7th.

In case you're still in need of convincing, Sega's got a lengthy 12-minute roundup of most of the game's songs. Check it out above. And if you never knew where the so-called "Nyan Cat" song comes from, you might be in for a surprise.

Arma 3 Alpha now available

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 01:00 AM PST

The Alpha version of Arma 3 is now live on the Steam store. Players can check out the game ahead of release and help provide feedback on some of the limited content they can mess around with. There are four showcase missions (Infantry, Vehicles, Scuba, and Helicopter), some weapons, vehicles, two multiplayer scenarios, scenario editor, and mod support.

The map you'll be playing on is Stratis, featuring around 12 miles of terrain. The final map of the Mediterrean island of Altis will offer over160 miles to put things in perspective.

If you're on the fence about Arma 3, you can wait until March 14 when Bohemia Interactive releases the free Alpha Lite version of the game. It'll be the same as the main Alpha, just without multiplayer and modding. Plus, you'll need an invite from someone in the actual Alpha to get this free version.

Wow. I totally forgot this was happening. So yeah, King Leonidas from the movie 300 is in God of War: Ascension as a multiplayer character. You can play as the King of Spartans only if you pre-order the game from GameStop.

Pre-ordering Ascension from any other retailer will get you The Mythological Heroes Pack. This will let you play as Perseus, Orion, Odysseus, and Achilles.

Working replica of Dr. Light's capsule is so boss

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 12:00 AM PST

Most of the pieces on display at the Mega Man Boss Tribute art show running all month at San Francisco's Gauntlet Gallery are of the 2D drawn / painted variety. But the X series incarnation of the good Dr. Thomas Light was represented in a rather novel format.

Andrew Butterworth decided to make a 3D replica of Light's hologram capsule and have an actual "hologram" appear within. The "hologram" is nothing more than an After Effects animation projected against transparent glass, but the effect is nonetheless impressive.

Andrew claims that attendees will notice an Easter egg hidden in the animation loop that would be familiar to hardcore Mega Man X players. My money is on Light's Ryu costume!

Some classic game songs with a Middle-Eastern twist

Posted: 05 Mar 2013 11:00 PM PST

I've listened to plenty of videogame musical covers in the seven years I've worked at Destructoid. Yet, this is the first time I've heard of a musical cover montage with a Middle-Eastern twist to them. There's even some games covered here I'd never expect, like Alley Cat.

Resident Evil: Mercenaries shambles to eShop this week

Posted: 05 Mar 2013 10:00 PM PST

Resident Evil:The Mercenaries 3D is making its way to the 3DS once again, this time as a  downloadable on the Nintendo eShop. Capcom has announced that the title will be arriving on the platform later this week for just $19.99.

Despite providing an enjoyable experience, The Mercenaries 3D was hampered just by virtue of what it was: a bonus mode priced like a full retail game. Now, with a new home and a more palatable price tag, perhaps it will find an audience that's more appreciative of the limited fun it has to offer.

EA looking into Oculus Rift support for Frostbite engine

Posted: 05 Mar 2013 09:00 PM PST

Imagine it now: You're in a fighter jet playing Battlefield 4 and getting shot up. You have to bail out but see this as your chance to do that one jet trick, succeed, and proceed on with the battle with your newly acquired jet. Now imagine that scene as you have the Oculus Rift strapped to your face.

How cool would that be? Well Electronic Arts thinks it would be cool, and they're looking into getting all future Frostbite engine based games working with the virtual reality headset. MTBS3D forum's found out EA was looking into the Rift, and since then EA's Frank Vitz, head of the Frostbite creative team at DICE, confirmed that they're looking into it.

"I am really eager to see how the Oculus Rift works with Frostbite," stated Frank. "There are multiple titles in the works that would be awesome with the Rift. Of course it will be the responsibility of each game team to ensure that their game works in S3D and with the Rift if it proves to be viable."

No promises, but we at least now know that EA is considering Oculus Rift support.

Malicious Rebirth gliding to western PlayStation Vitas

Posted: 05 Mar 2013 08:00 PM PST

Malicious arrived on PlayStation Network last summer and it sounds like its enhanced PlayStation Vita port isn't too far behind. Alvion has confirmed Malicious Rebirth for western release and is currently trying to rush their localization team to bring the title to North American and European audiences.

It's unclear just how long that could take, given the original title took nearly two years to make the journey across the Pacific. Here's hoping the wait isn't quite as prolonged this time around.

Darkstalkers Resurrection physical release has dual subs

Posted: 05 Mar 2013 06:00 PM PST

Darkstalkers Resurrection is slated for a global release on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live next week. Unlike other territories, however, Japan will be receiving a physical edition of the enhanced fighting compilation astride the downloadable versions.

Thinking about importing a copy? Well then, good news! According to Siliconera, a Korean product listing asserts that the title features an option for English subtitles. It remains unclear just how extensive the translation will be, but it sounds like a nice addition regardless.
