Steam Box controller may measure your 'arousal' Posted: 05 Mar 2013 03:30 PM PST BBC recently got a chance to talk to Gabe Newell about the upcoming Steam Box, Valve's upcoming attempt to bring the Steam platform into the living room. Mr. Newell mentioned that a big hurdle at the moment is deciding on the right type of controller for the system. One possibility is a controller with sensors in it, in order to "be able to directly measure how aroused the player is - what their heart rate is, things like that - in order to offer them a new experience each time they play." He mentions Left 4 Dead as an example, which could possibly ramp things up considerably if the controller senses that the player is a scaredy-cat. The article also mentions that Valve is planning to give out prototypes to consumers in order to gauge their reactions to it in "the next three to four months." Regardless of whether or not the Steam Box can tell how aroused I am, consider me on board with the whole idea. Valve readies prototype Steam Box video game console [BBC]

Edge of Space trailer shows rocket shark, tanooki-squid Posted: 05 Mar 2013 03:00 PM PST If there are two things I love, they are Terraria, and outer space. So naturally, I have been waiting impatiently for every bit of news about Starbound. However, it seems that Handyman Studios may be beating Chucklefish to the punch with their Steam Greenlight title, Edge of Space. The trailer above shows off a few things that Terraria fans should already be familiar with, including exploration, building, and combat against wacky creatures. Some additions to the formula include pets, mechs, and of course, different worlds with distinct biomes. To be honest, something about the art style doesn't sit quite right with me. It may be that the styles for the foreground and the background are too dissimilar, or it may be that the character sprites seem too large. Regardless, I'm still interested to check this out. Edge of Space is currently in beta, and can be pre-purchased now on Desura for access to the beta, at a discounted price of $9.99. If you'd like to see it on Steam, you can vote for it on its Greenlight page.

Puzzle game Dungeon Hearts hits Steam and iOS soon Posted: 05 Mar 2013 02:30 PM PST Dungeon Hearts, a game that combines JRPG elements with match-three puzzle gameplay, is set to hit both Steam and iOS devices later this month on March 28th. I'm curious as to how exactly the gameplay will shake out, since the description mentions balancing "between offensive strikes and defensive maneuvers." I can barely tell what is going on in this trailer, but I suppose that's what they could be doing. I'm certainly interested in Dungeon Hearts, so long as there is a colorblind mode option in the game. You hear me, Devolver Digital? Us colorblindies would like to play your game, so let us!

Mojang considering PlayStation version of Minecraft Posted: 05 Mar 2013 02:00 PM PST iGamer spoke with Minecraft lead designer Jens Bergensten who revealed the possibility of a PlayStation version of their popular game. “Microsoft has an exclusivity deal for consoles. When it runs out we’ll consider Minecraft for PlayStation, but Wii U is very unlikely.” Shame that a Wii U version might not happen, especially as the GamePad would lend itself really well. And while Jens didn't exactly specify if this would be coming out for the PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Vita, it would be ridiculous for them to not do some kind of Cross-Buy option were it available for both. The full Mojang interview can be checked out in the newest issue of iGamer. [iGamer, via Edge-Online]

This Witcher 3 interview proves that beards are sexy Posted: 05 Mar 2013 01:30 PM PST In an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, CD Projekt revealed the reasoning behind the decision to give the previously beard-less Geralt a beard in The Witcher 3. Michał Platkow-Gilewski of CD Projekt said that they "asked all the girls here, what’s the sexiest thing about the guys in the office? They all said the beards are the sexiest." Okay the real reason is that "time has passed," but I'm going to keep citing that first quote to anyone who asks. The interview goes into some juicy game bits too, specifically why they chose an open world in such a story-heavy game and how they plan to make it work. CD Projekt has a lot of hard work ahead of them to live up to everything they promise, though judging from this interview, they seem to be on the right track. Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable is going on sale Posted: 05 Mar 2013 01:00 PM PST We've been given the heads up that Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable will be getting a temporary price reduction through April 2, 2013. While the original price is something I absolutely would have paid if I owned a PlayStation Vita, $29.99 does sound a bit more reasonable -- at least from a "normal" person standpoint. I haven't seen the change take effect just yet, and I have a feeling many of you who were going to buy EDF 2017 Portable would have done so already, but something to watch out for, certainly. Share the good word. Also, that screenshot is possibly the most EDF image I've ever seen.

Pirate Assassins, Ninja Turtles, and a Rebooted Thief Posted: 05 Mar 2013 12:30 PM PST
The long-awaited Thief reboot has been announced officially, the embargo's up for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and there's a whole mess of news about it. The next Tomb Raider movie aims to stick close to the new game, which drops today, Deus Ex: Human Defiance appears to be the title of the movie adaption (not a sequel) and can we please stop Paul W.S. Anderson from making more goddamn Resident Evil movies? Oh, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have a new game, and they're ugly in it, because they're mutated adolescent reptiles. Obviously.

Strike Suit Zero now has a cockpit view and better saving Posted: 05 Mar 2013 11:30 AM PST Born Ready Games has responded to community and critic feedback with a new patch for Strike Suit Zero which introduces a first-person cockpit view for all ships, multiple difficulty levels with the added promise that some difficulty spikes have been addressed, user-made checkpoints (!), and a revamped targeting system. The patch also has fixes for more of the remaining bugs, which you can see below in the full patch notes. I passed on Strike Suit Zero initially due to a lack of leisure time, not a lack of interest, but hearing about these improvements makes me believe that was probably for the best. This is starting to sound like the game it should be, which means I'll need to grab a copy here shortly. Read more... |
SimCity players experience long waits to play Posted: 05 Mar 2013 10:30 AM PST SimCity was released today, and due to the controversial need to always be connected to EA's server in order to play people have been experiencing long waits just trying to get in. In order to play SimCity you have to login to Origin, and since everyone is ready to jump in and play it's caused the servers to break for many users as seen from Origin's Twitter, EA's forums, Reddit, and Total Biscut. There are seven different severs, so the issue may not affect some players. Personally I haven't experienced any issues on the North America 2 server. While multiple servers might seem like it would solve the login issues, the downside is that you have to connect to the same server to keep playing the same city. All of your save games are stored on EA's servers, and if you can't connect to the same server you'll either have to wait or start a new city somewhere else, and some players are even reporting that their save games are being lost. Feel free to jump in the comments with how things are going for you, and expect our review to be up later this week.

The story behind Time and Eternity's revolutionary look Posted: 05 Mar 2013 09:30 AM PST When the PlayStation 1 and N64 came out and rough, polygonal, 3D character models became the norm, it took me a while to realize what was wrong. Playing certain games would creep into the uncanny. It took me a surprisingly long while to realize it was because characters I was used to seeing in 2D were now morphed and molded into awkward looking 3D, which could never look right. Sure, original characters might look good, and the transition between certain sprite characters (the more cartoonish Mario, et al) didn’t produce the same effect, but playing anything with licensed characters from a strong 2D background was a bit unsettling. Review: Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller - The Hangman Posted: 05 Mar 2013 09:00 AM PST I never thought I'd ever say this after the '90s, but there are simply too many interesting adventure games to keep track of. Back in 2011, I had been keeping close tabs on Cognition: An Eric Reed Thriller, after it ticked all the right boxes: A supernatural thriller, made by the team behind the King's Quest fangame, The Silver Lining, with Jane Jensen attached to the project as a story consultant. It all seemed very much my cup of tea. Unfortunately, by the time the first episode launched last October, I'd forgotten all about it. With the launch of the second episode at the end of January, and with the first episode's launch on iPad last week, I thought it was time to rectify this gross oversight. So here I am, in early March, writing a review for a game from October. Dedication, people. Read more... |
Go all in with Total War: Shogun 2 Gold Edition Posted: 05 Mar 2013 08:30 AM PST The "Gold Edition" repackaging of Total War: Shogun 2 with the game's two expansions, Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai, is now available for purchase in North America and will find its way to Europe and Australia this Friday, March 8. Rise of the Samurai turns the clock back even further, some 400 years before the sengoku period, with a full campaign based on the Gempei War. Fall of the Samurai, on the other hand, journeys forward to 19th-century Japan. The latter add-on is big -- like, $29.99 big -- so you're getting quite a bit here for the $39.99 Gold Edition. If the upcoming Total War: Rome II has renewed your interest in the franchise, this seems like a great way to dive in while saving some money in the process.

Ranked: The five best Castlevania games Posted: 05 Mar 2013 08:00 AM PST Castlevania is a very personal series for me. I grew up with the franchise from the very first game's wondrous release, through my utter confusion with Simon's Quest, all the way full circle to the newest iteration of the franchise, Lords of Shadow -- Mirror of Fate. Symphony of the Night was there for me during one of the toughest times of my childhood. My wife and I bonded over the original Castlevania, and it was one of the first games we ever beat together. I have a million of these stories, and for good reason. The art of Castlevania is always beautiful, the music is practically unparalleled, and the series itself moved the entire industry forward on a number of occasions. These are five of the best games the franchise has to offer. Read more... |
PAX East 2013 event schedule now available Posted: 05 Mar 2013 07:45 AM PST The schedule of events for this month's PAX East has finally arrived and you can check it out right now on the official PAX site. The more rigorous planners among you can now begin furiously plotting how to make the most of your time. If I may be so bold as to suggest a couple of excellent choices, our very own Dale North will be appearing on two panels during the event. On Saturday morning, he'll be talking about the modern Japanese role-playing game on a panel entitled, "Do JRPGs still matter?" From there, he moves directly on to a discussion of the less glamorous aspects of turning your love for games into a career writing about them in the "Why would you WANT to be a video games journalist?" panel. I know that if I were going to be attending PAX East with all of you, I wouldn't want to miss those. PAX East Schedule [PAX Site] [Image]

Watch Lara Croft die over and over again in Tomb Raider Posted: 05 Mar 2013 07:30 AM PST The new Tomb Raider is out in stores today and marks the beginning of a fresh new take on the series. One of the things Crystal Dynamics wasn't afraid to do was let Lara get brutally killed time and time again. Like, seriously. I had to look away at just the second death scene here! Thanks once again to David The Barbarian for the video. Check out his YouTube channel if you're looking for stuff from the weird side of the Internet.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance originally went cat crazy Posted: 05 Mar 2013 07:15 AM PST Cats. Who doesn't love them? As many of you may recall, the demo for Metal Gear Rising Revengeance had a solitary cat that many of you referred to as "Ninja Cat." That was only one of many adorable creatures that were supposed to be in the game originally. Above, compliments of Platinum Games, you'll find a video showing off just how many feline friends were going to join Raiden on his adventures, intermittently throughout the game. In the end, Platinum only went with Ninja Cat, who is impervious to Raiden's ninja skills or attacks. Maybe it's for the best. Wait, nope, everything is better with cats. Thief's focus ability will change how stealth works Posted: 05 Mar 2013 07:00 AM PST Thief (originally titled Thief 4) is a series reboot of the seminal stealth series. It will come to PC, PS4, and the next Xbox in 2014. It started as an Assassin's Creed-inspired third-person action game, but returned to its first-person stealth roots after Eidos Montreal tweaked it for three years. Of its tweaks, the most noteworthy addition to the series is the Focus ability. Like Hitman: Absolution's Instinct ability, Focus is Thief's way of letting the player navigate the environment and get out of combat encounters. Focus highlights interactive objects, pipes you can climb and candles that can be extinguished. Focus can also stun or kill enemies, depending on how much is used in combat. Bones crack like in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes films or Sniper Elite V2. Focus can be upgraded after a mission, along with supplies and equipment, giving a greater radius to its effect. Stealing objects and pickpocketing refills the ability's resources, but Eidos said it is still playtesting this. "The big difference today is that players don't want to play the same sections over and over again," producer Stephane Roy told Game Informer. "Our job is really to make it so that when you are seen you have options to move through or stumble the guards and then jump back in the shadows." Read more... |
Humble Bundle has Super Hexagon and more Posted: 05 Mar 2013 06:45 AM PST For the next two weeks, the Humble Bundle with Android 5 (have there really been that many?) will offer pay-what-you-want pricing on Beat Hazard Ultra, Dynamite Jack, Solar 2, NightSky HD, Super Hexagon, and Dungeon Defenders plus all of its DLC. To get those last two, you'll need to beat the average purchase price, which is under $6 right now. Although this has an Android hook to it, Windows, Mac, and Linux versions of these games are also included. You can't forget about the soundtracks, either -- there's one for all but Dynamite Jack in this bundle. To date, the Humble Bundles have brought in more than $10.7 million for charity. Go ahead, pat yourselves on the back.

There are no Guild Wars 2 expansions in the works Posted: 05 Mar 2013 06:30 AM PST Speaking to IGN, Guild Wars 2 director Colin Johanson stated that there are no expansions planned for the game at the current moment. While they haven't completely ruled any out, don't expect any soon. Johanson states, "expansions are definitely something that we’ll potentially look at in the future. We don’t have a timetable on it. We’re open to it, but I think our major focus as a studio is making the living world concept as strong as possibly can for the players that we’ve got." He also notes that it's "unlikely" that there will be a Guild Wars 3, because Guild Wars 2 will evolve, until it "becomes Guild Wars 2.5 or Guild Wars 3." This is pretty great news in my mind. If you keep getting free content updates for this subscription free MMO, you never have to worry about paywalls into new areas. Since ArenaNet has been keen on supporting the game well into launch, it looks like you'll have plenty to do. No Guild Wars 2 Expansions [IGN]

Pay what you want for bridge-building sim Bridge It Posted: 05 Mar 2013 06:15 AM PST IndieGameStand is running a sale on Bridge It, a game that looks exactly what it sounds like. It's a pay-what-you-want deal, with the minimum set at $1. The fascination with simulation games hasn't caught on with me in any meaningful way, but the description for this one sounds devilish enough that I might just have to give it a go: "Set in the picturesque surroundings of sparse deserts and dense forests it is your task to strategically design and construct an engineering masterpiece. Watch in eager anticipation as unsuspecting motorists, heavy freight trains and tourist riverboats approach. Will your solution stand up to the test or will tons of mangled steel be sent plummeting into the river below?" Paying more than the average (a couple bucks, at this point) unlocks the game's add-on pack, while paying $10 or more throws in access to Pixelry and the next game on IndieGameStand. 10 percent of proceeds from this promo will go toward Equality Now, "an organization that advocates for the human rights of women and girls around the world."

Review: Dynasty Warriors 7: Empires Posted: 05 Mar 2013 06:00 AM PST When it comes to milking a franchise, few companies are as impressive in their zeal as Tecmo Koei. This is a company that has not only released seven Dynasty Warriors games (with an eighth on the way), but managed to produce two major spin-off properties, each with their own sequels, and gets away with releasing two spin-off versions of every main installment it produces. Each Dynasty Warriors sequel gets two followups that copy most of the assets and add a few new pieces of content -- Xtreme Legends and Empires. We've already reviewed Xtreme Legends for the seventh installment, which introduced new characters and scenarios, but now Koei's back with the Empires variant -- a strategic take on the main game that charges players with uniting the kingdom through politics and force. As excessive as the Dynasty Warriors releases are, fans usually find the variant spin-offs interesting enough to give them a pass. However, with Tecmo Koei seemingly averse to spending money or exerting any effort lately, its usual tactics have become less easy to overlook, a problem wholly evident in Dynasty Warriors 7: Empires. Snoop Dogg has a rhythm fighting game on the way Posted: 05 Mar 2013 05:45 AM PST Yes, this is a real thing that is happening. 505 Games and developer Echo Peak have teamed up with Snoop Dogg to create Way of the Dogg. It's a rhythm-action fighting game stars America, a guy who's out for revenge after his girlfriend was brutally murdered. He goes to Snoop Dogg's temple to train, and to learn "the way of the Dogg" in order to get his revenge. Way of the Dogg is set to come out later this year for Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, iOS, and Android. The game will be out alongside Snoop's new album and film, Reincarnated, set to release on April 23, 2013. Videogames!

Ridiculous Fishing casts its line March 14 Posted: 05 Mar 2013 05:30 AM PST Vlambeer has announced the release date for Ridiculous Fishing, which will be arriving on iOS March 14. I was fiddling around with the game on my iPad over the weekend, and it's some highly addictive stuff. If you've played the original Flash release, Radical Fishing, you can probably see why (and now would be a good time to check it out if you haven't). But the iOS version, with its tilt and touch controls, feels so much better and packs in a lot of new guns, lures and fish to catch. Can't wait for next week! March 14th. Ridiculous Fishing. Be There. [Vlambeer]

RetroN 4 plays NES, SNES, Genesis, and ... GBA?! Posted: 05 Mar 2013 05:15 AM PST Ahead of a full reveal later this month, Hyperkin has begun talking about its latest system, the RetroN 4. This bad boy has slots for NES, Super Nintendo, Genesis, and Game Boy Advance cartridges, as well as six controller ports (two for each console) and HDMI output. Both NTSC and PAL games are supported, in addition to Bluetooth; the RetroN 4 is said to have a redesigned wireless controller. Finally, there's a "digital user interface which opens a wide variety of modern gaming features such as selecting systems, button reassignment and other features" that will be announced on March 23 at the Midwest Gaming Classic. I've yet to come across any images of the console, but based on its predecessor, I'm not expecting it to look pretty. That's okay, though -- assuming it all works, and most games are compatible and run well, I'll take functionality over form.

My five biggest concerns about Assassin's Creed IV Posted: 05 Mar 2013 05:00 AM PST Assassin's Creed is my favorite franchise of the Xbox 360/PS3 era. I know that's an increasingly unpopular opinion, but this series gripped me from the very outset. The wonderful combination of conspiracy theory intertwined with historical events, all wrapped around an open-world experience that encourages exploration is what enticed me in the beginning, and it's what keeps me coming back for more. That being said, I don't view the Assassin's Creed games through rose-tinted glasses. Just the opposite, I hold these titles to a very high standard. One that I believe reciprocates the potential that they have. To this day, Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood are the only games that I look back on with completely favorable opinions. With the official reveal of Assassin's Creed IV came a ton of information on the direction of the game. As is almost always the case, just about everything looks promising as of right now. It's yet to be seen how it all translates to the final product. As a veteran and enthusiast of the franchise, these are my major concerns about Assassin's Creed IV. Read more... |
Why are the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles so ugly?! Posted: 05 Mar 2013 04:45 AM PST Okay, maybe I'm being too critical here. I can't help it though, considering I grew up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I was that kid. That kid who had all the action figures including the dumb non-TMNT figures, all the clothes, and obsessively watched the show. With all that said, Activision and Red Fly's take on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles looks so ugly. They don't even match the look of the new Nickelodeon Turtles, which this game is supposed to be based around. Still, I'm going to try Out of the Shadows at least before completely dismissing it. It's not often we get a four-player co-op TMNT game. Well, good ones at least. Read more... |
Lara's big day: Tomb Raider launch trailer Posted: 05 Mar 2013 04:30 AM PST As you likely noticed, Tomb Raider released throughout much of the world today. This reboot has been talked about at length, both in terms of Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics' marketing push and its fair share of controversies. It's nice to finally have nothing stand between us and the game -- to let it speak for itself. If you haven't been keeping tracks, reviews have been mostly positive, with our own awarding the game an 8.5 out of 10. Although the Tomb Raider series has never been able to grab me, I have a feeling this might be the one that breaks through. Are any of you in a similar boat?

Become a manager in Blood Bowl: Star Coach Posted: 05 Mar 2013 03:45 AM PST More Blood Bowl? More Blood Bowl. I just love typing that name. This time around, Cyanide will be appealing to fans of management sims with Star Coach, a new game heading to Windows, Mac, and tablets in Q2 2013 with cross-platform multiplayer. "There are many ways to play Blood Bowl and lots of extensions already developed," said Cyanide CEO Patrick Pligersdorffer. "Blood Bowl: Star Coach will interest both fans of football management as well as pure Blood Bowl enthusiasts. Players will encounter all the typical emotions and depth of play of a management game as well as the fun and originality specific to the Blood Bowl universe." Given the premise, these first screenshots are about what one would expect to find. However, the announcement did mention a replay mode that shows the action "in full 3D." Yes, please. Read more... |
Former Bulletstorm developer on move toward smaller games Posted: 05 Mar 2013 03:30 AM PST
Now that’s what I like to hear. Too often in AAA development do you get an evident materialization of the old “too many cooks spoil the broth” adage, and kitchen sink game design. Talented folks leaving the comfortable, bombastic world of Bulletstorm and the gritty, emotionally repressed world of Gears of War to try something wholly new and exciting can only be a good thing in my book.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 demo available now Posted: 05 Mar 2013 03:15 AM PST The demo for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 is available today on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and includes the "Legends of the Majors" mode. In the demo, this mode will bring the player back to 1961, which of course everybody knows was the year of the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale with Arnold Palmer. You may also know Mr. Palmer for his tasty mix of iced tea and lemonade. The demo also contains the Quick Tournaments and Connected Tournaments game modes. Ever since I played one of the earlier PlayStation 2 Tiger Woods games, I've been hooked. I'm not even a big fan of the sport, but the gameplay is so incredibly solid that I find myself enraptured by playing it. I haven't played in recent years, so hopefully this year's outing is solid enough for me to jump back on the train.

Jerry Bruckheimer Games is no more Posted: 05 Mar 2013 02:45 AM PST Do you remember Jerry Bruckheimer Games? You would be forgiven if you didn't. After we first heard that the studio would be partnering with MTV in 2007, and then that it had acquired talent from Microsoft and Ubisoft in 2009, it apparently dropped off the radar. In fact, after more than five years since its inception, Jerry Bruckheimer Games has not been credited with producing a single title. Originally, it was described as a "game incubation studio," where the team would come up with ideas for games, then send those ideas to other development studios to actually put the games together. While this is likely to be the last we ever hear of Jerry Bruckheimer Games, it would be interesting to hear what kinds of ideas the studio produced, even if those ideas will never come to fruition. Next-gen Thief revealed, coming out in 2014 Posted: 05 Mar 2013 02:15 AM PST Game Informer has revealed their next big cover story and it's for Thief! The series has remained in the shadows for quite some time now, but Eidos Montreal is finally ready to reveal the return of their stealth franchise. The next game will star Garrett once again, and sees him returning to the industrial metropolis known as the City. The City is getting hit hard by a plague, and is under control by a political tyrant called the Baron. Sounds ... familiar. Thief will be out for the PS4, PC, and "other next-gen platforms" sometime in 2014. You can read up on everything about the new Thief in the April issue of Game Informer arriving within the month to subscribers. April Cover Revealed: Thief [Game Informer]

Nintendo issues first major 2013 Wii U system update Posted: 05 Mar 2013 02:00 AM PST Nintendo has made an update available for all you Wii U owners out there that adds "system stability improvements and other adjustments to enhance the user's experience". Jargon aside, basically, all I've found it to fix is some occasional freezing after quitting some games -- specifically Runner 2, which froze every time I quit. This 30MB update is a small taste of the larger update coming later in April, which really will fix UI load times. I can't wait for that one personally, because sometimes my menus will take 10-20 seconds to load per transition, which can get pretty annoying. Wii U system update [Eurogamer]

Next Tomb Raider film will be based on latest reboot Posted: 05 Mar 2013 01:30 AM PST We've known for a little while now that Tomb Raider would be making it back to the big screen, and now we know it will be based on the new reboot of the game series thanks to a Variety interview. This won't be a repeat of the Angelina Jolie takes where the license is just handed away blindly either, as Crystal Dynamics is working closely with GK Films to develop the movie. “They are working from this new take that we’ve given them,” Gallagher of GK Films told Variety. “It’s a good partnership. We’re seeing the challenges through the same lens. “It was important for both of us to have a cohesive version of the franchise. We didn’t want to see a film version that was a continuation of the old ‘Tomb Raider’ films.” That all sounds pretty promising. The next Tomb Raider is out today and I think it would lend itself quite well to the big screen. Check out our official review to see how the new game turned out. ‘Tomb Raider’ Reboot Intros Younger Lara Croft [Variety]

Word puzzler SpellTower arrives on Android this Thursday Posted: 05 Mar 2013 01:00 AM PST Corgi King and Captain of the Destructoid Army, Dale North, is all about SpellTower. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't fond of the little guy myself. The manic word search puzzler is so hot that it was even able to breathe down Angry Birds' neck for a short while. Seriously, hot tamale. Creator Zach Gage has just informed me that the long-awaited Android version will be arriving this Thursday, March 7. It'll have all the same features as the iOS version, including local Wi-Fi multiplayer, and will be compatible with 1800+ Android devices, such as Amazon Kindle. If you've forgotten what SpellTower is all about, check out the trailer below. Trust me when I say that it can get quite intense. Read more... |
Rumor: Dead Space franchise may be on indefinite hold Posted: 05 Mar 2013 12:26 AM PST [Update: Gamasutra reached out to Electronic Arts and the rumors of an announced Dead Space 4 being cancelled are "patently false."] According to a report from VideoGamer.com, the Dead Space series is no more -- at least, for the time being. A source familiar with the project told VideoGamer that Dead Space 4, which had been in pre-production, was canceled after Dead Space 3 did not meet the lofty sales goals EA had in mind (reportedly five million). This would basically put it in the same dream-like state that Medal of Honor is in right now. Honestly, a lot of us saw the writing on the wall. What gets me is that EA demanded that many aspects of Dead Space 3 to be re-worked to "broaden the appeal of the series", including the vanilla "all inclusive" ammo mechanic to accommodate for micro-transactions, and the more action oriented feel. Then, if this report is correct, it cancels the series after meddling in it. Great work, EA.

Chinese Wii U GamePad clone is better than the real thing Posted: 05 Mar 2013 12:00 AM PST China made a knock-off a consumer electronics device? Whoa! Jane, get me off this crazy thing! In truth, it's not surprising that the Chinese copied the look and style of yet another gaming console or portable -- anyone up for a round of WiWi golf? -- but at least we know where such contraptions sit on the quality scale. When said contraption manages to outperform the device it's copying, that's a whole different story. JinXing Digital's S7300 GamePad 2 certainly looks like and is obviously named after the Wii U's GamePad controller, but the similarities end there. Rather than being a controller for a base console, it is the console. This Android-powered portable is packed with tech in a form that's actually thinner than the Wii U GamePad. The S7300 also has a five-point capacitive screen and can connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi, 3G, or Ethernet, and it can output a 1080p feed through HDMI for the full home console experience. Best of all, it can be purchased for as low as $140, which beats the pants off the Wii U GamePad's $150 tag. Of course, no Chinese hardware clone is complete without a pack of emulators -- and despite a misleading image of Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the JXD page, Wii emulation is not among them. Still, that means you have access to a wider variety of retro gaming with this than with Wii U's current Virtual Console lineup of Balloon Fight and F-Zero -- not that I condone illegal emulation, but I'm just saying. I'm actually tempted to buy one of these babies for myself! If nothing else, the S7300 GamePad 2 suggests that a Nintendo console-portable hybrid might not be such a bad idea in the future. Resident Evil: Revelations 360 and 3DS comparison video Posted: 04 Mar 2013 11:00 PM PST Nintendo Everything decided to directly compare the upcoming Resident Evil: Revelations HD re-release to the original 3DS version. Which one is better? You decide as you insult each other with your platform preferences in order to win the Internet! On a more serious note, both versions are fine. The 3DS version was pretty powerful for a handheld title. The console and PC versions are shaping up to be pretty nice, as well. Speaking of the HD versions, they'll be receiving new content such as Infernal mode. This new mode increases the difficulty, and remixes enemy and item placement. Take a look at how Infernal works in the video below. Read more... |
Schilling looking to dismiss lawsuit over 38 Studios loan Posted: 04 Mar 2013 10:00 PM PST Curt Schilling has requested a judge throw out the lawsuit against his now-defunct development house. Following the dissolution of 38 Studios, the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation accused Schilling and his business partners of fraud, racketeering and conspiracy. The embroiled 38 Studios founder calls the agency's claims "implausible" and has filed for dismissal, asserting the company repeatedly disclosed financials to the EDC. Ostensibly, the state knew the loan wouldn't cover Project Copernicus' development costs. "Given the EDC's admissions concerning 38 Studios' disclosures to the EDC's executives, attorneys and financial advisor, it is impossible for the EDC simultaneously to claim that the 38 Studios defendants supposedly defrauded the EDC," the motion reads. After crossing swords with Governor Lincoln Chafee, Schilling believes the lawsuit is driven by political motivations and that the state didn't do enough to save the company in its hour of need. Savor this album of Sega Genesis-styled jams Posted: 04 Mar 2013 08:00 PM PST Tuesday morning music madness gives props to the Sega Genesis! I will not rest until I convert all you SNES-loving heathens (I don't really think you are heathens) into soldiers of the Genesis nation. The war rages on (no it doesn't)! Vurgon is the first completed album by Ario, who only started making tunes a mere six years ago. The seven-track chiptune production makes full use of FM synth, that magical quality of sound that made Genesis music so gosh-darn lovely. And with alien gibberish like "Glaustarr" and "Clankendrung" as song titles, Ario's album could easily work as the soundtrack to a new 16-bit space shmup. Want this bizniz? Give Vurgon a download below, for however much you wish to splurge. Ario - Vurgon [Ubiktune] Read more... |
Mock-up: This is how Wind Waker could play on the Wii U Posted: 04 Mar 2013 07:00 PM PST The folks over at Cubed3 have put together a very impressive mock-up video of how the upcoming re-release of Wind Waker could play once it's prettied up and released on the Wii U. Keep in mind that absolutely non of this is official and the graphics are just the GameCube version. They go over a wide variety of control schemes, from using just the GamePad and its buttons, to stylus movement a la Phantom Hourglass, and even include Wiimote + Nunchuck controls. There's some great ideas in here, especially using the GamePad as the Tingle Tuner. Definitely check out their ideas, along with explanations, on their website. I trust Nintendo to do a solid job with this re-release, and I hope that some of these ideas are integrated into Wind Waker Reborn, releasing later this year.
