| Massively Interview: TERA's Patrick Sun on free-to-play Posted: 11 Feb 2013 09:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Business models, Interviews, MMO industry, Free-to-play, Massively Interviews, TERA Action-MMO TERA officially went free-to-play last week, and with the transition came a number of questions regarding payment tiers, transition plans, and En Masse's vision for the future of the game. Will TERA turn into a "pay-to-win" graveyard, or will it be another shining example of how to do free-to-play just right? We sat down with associate producer Patrick Sun to find out. | The Nexus Telegraph: Unpacking WildStar's big reveals Posted: 11 Feb 2013 08:00 AM PST Filed under: Sci-fi, Game mechanics, Endgame, Opinion, WildStar, The Nexus Telegraph There are times I both love and hate being a journalist. Case in point: the recent WildStar hands-on that Bree got to play with. I knew about it a while ago, and got a peek at most of the reveals, which was great. But I had to sit on that knowledge, which was not so great. Also I couldn't go myself, which comes down less to the job of a journalist and more to the fact that I live on the other coast, but I still didn't like that. But we aren't here to talk about that. We're here to talk about a groundswell of new information that we got from that experience, and while I don't want to step on Bree's toes at all, there's a lot of stuff that deserves further discussion. And we know that the developers want this game to launch in 2013, which means that as of right now we are looking at a ticking clock. I'll talk about that later. | Kislyi calls for 'second F2P revolution' in DICE speech Posted: 11 Feb 2013 07:00 AM PST Filed under: Business models, Events, real-world, MMO industry, News items, Free-to-play, Consoles, World of Tanks Wargaming.net CEO Victor Kislyi took the stage at last week's DICE Summit to talk about the ongoing evolution of free-to-play. He's what you might call an expert on the subject given that the company he founded features 1.2 million peak concurrent users as well as 1,400 employees and 12 offices world-wide.Kislyi's 40-minute speech featured World of Tanks, but it also made mention of the firm's recent acquisition of Day 1 Studios. The move was made with an eye towards cornering the console F2P market, something Kislyi says that traditional console makers would be wise to do as well. "They keep their own prejudice and they keep to their old ways," he said. "If they keep holding to their old way, single-player box ideas they may pretty well drop." You can view Kislyi's DICE speech in its entirety after the cut. Continue reading Kislyi calls for 'second F2P revolution' in DICE speech

| First impressions of Neverwinter's beta Posted: 11 Feb 2013 06:30 AM PST Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Screenshots, New titles, Previews, Opinion, Free-to-play, Hands-on, Massively Hands-on, First Impressions, Neverwinter Neverwinter is all the rage these days among MMO fans as the promise of a Fourth Edition D&D MMO in the Forgotten Realms setting has many old-school tabletop gamers jumping at the opportunity to get into the early testing stages. Thanks to last week's short press beta and this weekend's first early head-start glimpse, I was able to play through the game for a few days to get a feel for what to expect when the game launches later this year.We first heard rumblings of a Neverwinter MMO in 2010 and got to see a live demo of it at E3 2011, just before Perfect World Entertainment took over Cryptic Studios. It was a very early build, but I was so excited to see a comprehensive drag-and-drop dungeon builder that seemed to work beautifully. Even during the demo, I was daydreaming about what I could do with this thing and the adventures I could have with my friends. Of course, that all changed when Cryptic announced a complete overhaul to the original incarnation of the game. Luckily for us, this meant that the dungeon-creating RPG was turning into a full-fledged MMO. Continue reading First impressions of Neverwinter's beta

Last year we interviewed the developers about their particular approach which makes for a good read if you want to get caught up on the concept of the title. There is no word as to when the closed beta will commence. [Thanks to Dengar for the tip!]

| The Daily Grind: Do you retry MMOs you didn't like the first time? Posted: 11 Feb 2013 05:00 AM PST Filed under: Sci-fi, Opinion, Free-to-play, The Daily Grind, Star Wars: The Old Republic Star Wars: The Old Republic is kind of a love/hate game for me. I love the IP, particularly the Expanded Universe portions of it which BioWare fleshed out to great effect in both TOR and its original Knights of the Old Republic title. On the other hand, I'm a sandbox and virtual world junkie, and it's my opinion that BioWare didn't set out to make a proper MMORPG as much as it set out to marry an MMO business model with single-player mechanics. All that aside, TOR is one of those games that I keep track of, and every so often I'll play for a couple of hours on the chance that I'll enjoy it a little better than I did the last time. What about you, Massively readers? Do you return to MMOs you're not crazy about in the hopes you'll find something to like?

| EVE Evolved: Looking back at previous Fanfests Posted: 10 Feb 2013 03:00 PM PST Filed under: Sci-fi, Video, EVE Online, Culture, Events, real-world, MMO industry, New titles, News items, Opinion, World of Darkness, EVE Evolved, DUST 514, Sandbox The annual EVE Online Fanfest is a massive event that brings together players from across the world to discuss the serious business of internet spaceships. It's three days of in-depth developer talks, sneak previews of what's to come, and roundtable events that let players discuss their ideas and feedback directly with developers. The EVE communty may not be as large as the community of games like World of Warcraft, but thousands of players pay a considerable sum of money each year to fly to the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik for the event.Fanfest started out as a very small and personal affair with just a few dozen people in attendance, but it's grown to absolutely massive proportions in recent years. This year's event promises to be bigger than ever as it will be celebrating EVE Online's 10th anniversary and the impending release of CCP Games' MMOFPS DUST 514. It's a special milestone for CCP and EVE fans alike, and tickets for the event have already sold out! If you didn't manage to snag a ticket, you should still be able to enjoy parts of Fanfest as key talks and events will likely be streamed live as in previous years and videos will be uploaded after the convention. In this week's EVE Evolved, I look back at the highlights of the past two EVE Fanfests and the social aspect that makes it one of the best experiences and EVE player can have. | Star Wars: The Old Republic drops patch 1.7 on Tuesday Posted: 10 Feb 2013 10:00 AM PST Filed under: Sci-fi, Events, in-game, Game mechanics, Patches, News items, Free-to-play, Star Wars: The Old Republic It's almost time to see what you can do about your reputation in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Patch 1.7 is bringing the new reputation system as well as the new Relics of the Gree event to the live servers on Tuesday, February 12th. The maintenance window for the patch is five and a half hours, although as with most major patches, there's always the chance that it'll run a little longer because of unforeseen issues. If you've still got more questions about what the reputation system will add to the game, a recent development blog answers those questions. Notably, this patch has not been up for testing on the test server, possibly to keep the event a bit more of a secret. Whatever the case, players will get to put their hands on the changes in just a couple of days, so get ready to travel across the galaxy and get some props from galactic reputation. [Thanks to Jose for the tip!]
