| New Mexico shooting? Lets scapegoat videogames! Posted: 22 Jan 2013 03:00 PM PST It's implied that the headline to a news story contains the most important information from that story, right? That's not just a matter of opinion. That's a generally recognized fact, isn't it? So am I really seeing that NBC.com has used the headline, and not 1, not 2, but 3 opening paragraphs to discuss the fact that a 15 year old boy accused of shooting and killing mother, father, and siblings liked violent videogames? Seriously? Seriously. If you read more deeply into the story, you'll also find that the 15 year old was also raised in a home with his jailhouse chaplin (and ex-convict) father, who not only trained his son to use a variety of guns at a young age, but also transformed their property into a "halfway house" for other convicted criminals. The boy was brought up with a relative armory in his home, among ex-cons who were in some "halfway" state of reforming from unspecified criminal mindsets, and it's the videogames that NBC can't stop talking about? I'm no PhD, but I don't think it takes a whole lot of book learning to guess what may have really contributed to this child's comfort with gun violence, and his repressed anger at himself and the world around him. I'll be highly surprised if we don't eventually discover that this boy was abused by his family and/or some of those ex-cons. Sadly, if the mainstream media's pattern of witch hunting continues, I'll probably have to dig through paragraphs of crap about how much he enjoyed Pac-Man and movies about Gladiators in order to find that information, New Mexico teen accused of family slaughter loved 'violent' video games, police say [NBCnews.com] |
| Here are the 2013 IGF Student Showcase winners Posted: 22 Jan 2013 02:30 PM PST Now that we've seen the Main Competition finalists for the 2013 Independent Games Festival, it's that time when we check in on what the students have been up to. Judges narrowed down more than 300 entries to end up with the following list of Student Showcase winners:
Of the winners, Knights of Pen & Paper and Zineth immediately jump out as me as recognizable, which means there's further link clicking that needs to be done on my part. If you'd like to dig deeper, be sure to read over the announcement post, as it also lists the honorable mentions. |
| New character skins for Borderlands 2 now for sale Posted: 22 Jan 2013 02:00 PM PST Tired of the dozens of ways you can customize the look of your Vault Hunter in Borderlands 2? 2K Games announced today the availability of new DLC skin packs you can buy to shake up your style a bit more. Each of the playable characters has a new head and body skin available in each of three themes, which 2K has chosen to call, "Domination, Madness, and Supremacy," for a total of fifteen original, new designs. The DLC items are being sold with the head and body items together for $0.99 (or 80 MS points) each, and they look pretty cool. It's nevertheless weird to think about paying money for cosmetic items applied to a character you never see because the game is played entirely in first-person view. I get excited by the prospect of looking at my unlocked skins, but actually paying for more of them seems like a lapse in judgment. A Flood of New Borderlands 2 Heads and Skins Available... | Let's Fish! Hooked On hits PlayStation Vita next week Posted: 22 Jan 2013 01:30 PM PST When talking to another human being who doesn't play many videogames, I have to imagine trying to explain a title like Let's Fish! Hooked On would come across as mystifying. And in its own way, that's kind of awesome. It's a pleasant surprise, then, to see this latest fishing game from SIMS (Sega Bass Fishing) arrive on PlayStation Vita on January 29, 2013. The PlayStation Blog has the details, reporting that Hooked On will release for $19.99 via PlayStation Network. There's a full story mode in World Tour, but if you're in it purely for the arcade-style fishing action, a Challenge mode with online rankings will satisfy that desire. |

| Bass and Treble are next in Bandai's D-Arts Mega Man line Posted: 22 Jan 2013 01:00 PM PST After rockin' some kickass Mega Man X figurines for a while, Bandai decided to return to the series' classic roots with an OG Mega Man and Rush combo this past December. And because little boy blue was just so gosh-darn popular, his rival Bass was bound to crash the party. D-Arts Bass is confirmed for a June release at a price of ¥3990 (~$45), and he will include his trusty canine companion Treble. No American release has been announced yet, but Bandai has been on the ball in bringing all the Mega Men westward via Bluefin. If you haven't purchased any D-Arts figurines, Mega Man or otherwise, whip out that wallet as soon as you can. These aren't model kits or resin statues, but rather some of the highest quality action figures I have ever seen. The sticker price may seem rather high, but sleep easy knowing that these figures more than demonstrate their worth. Trust me. News: Figure-Oh No. 180 [Plastic Joint via Protodude's Rockman Corner] |
| Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories comes to PSN today Posted: 22 Jan 2013 12:30 PM PST Because you spent every waking moment gorging on Disgaea: Hour of Darkness since its digital re-release on last week, NIS America is dishing out seconds. Tactical role-playing game Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories is set to grace PlayStation Network. While the better regarded Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days is already available for PSP and Vita, Cursed Memories costs just $9.99. That's quite the steal for a game you could potentially spend hundreds of hours with. Look out for it later today. Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories Hits PSN Today [PlayStation Blog] |
| Skiing/snowboarding PC game SNOW sounds terrific Posted: 22 Jan 2013 12:00 PM PST While I'm of the opinion that we could use more snowboarding games regardless of what specific form the gameplay takes, with SSX still relatively fresh on our minds, it would be nice to see a high-profile title founded in realism. Perhaps Poppermost Productions will fill that void with its free-to-play, CryEngine 3-powered PC game SNOW. I had never heard of this prior to today, but it sounds highly promising. The Stockholm, Sweden-based studio is partnering with notable freeskiers Tom Wallisch, Tanner Hall, and Russ Henshaw in an attempt to nail realistic gameplay for its open-world title. "We are extremely fortunate to have such amazing athletic talent on our team," said CEO Alexander Bergendah. "They will provide us with unmatched insight into their world, and offer gamers experiences that they've personally designed." Apparently, a public beta test is coming soon. Better keep an eye out! | Divekick is coming to the PS3, PC, and Vita Posted: 22 Jan 2013 11:30 AM PST Iron Galaxy Studios and Shoryuken.com editor-in-chief Adam Heart have been hard at work getting Divekick together for a formal release. It appears as if an agreement has been made, and the game is getting a full release on the PS3, PC, and PlayStation Vita later this spring. This version will contain online support, a full campaign, and other features. For those of you who haven't heard of Divekick before, it was initially a Kickstarter-fueled fighter that turned to publisher support, and it uses two buttons. After first being dismissed as a simple parody, people actually started to take a liking to the game, and there's a decent hardcore scene around it. As someone who's been interested since the beginning, I can't wait to see how this pans out! |
| What do you think of the Metal Gear Revengeance demo? Posted: 22 Jan 2013 11:00 AM PST The Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance demo is now up on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. The demo is based on the Tokyo Game Show demo we saw last year, and sees Raiden fighting cyborgs, Geckos, and the dog robot with a chainsaw for a tail. We've been looking forward to this new entry to the Metal Gear universe long before it was even a Platinum Games project. Now we're just under a month away from the February 19 release in the US. While I intend on playing the ever living hell out of Revengeance when it's officially released, the demo has left me a bit turned off. My attempts are parrying attacks seemed to work only half the time, leaving me frustrated more often than not. I need to give the demo a few more spins, as others didn't seem to run into my problem when I brought it up on Twitter. It probably also doesn't help that I'm just coming off of a big high from DmC's combat system, which I adore. What do you think of the Revengeance demo? |
| This Month in the Community: Coldcocked Posted: 22 Jan 2013 10:30 AM PST [Every month or so, we on the Dtoid Community Team throw together a round-up of everything happening in and around the community! We'll scour the C Blogs and Forums for awesome posts, recap our latest community playdates, highlight community podcasts, and give you the low-down on any NARPs you may have missed.] It's winter here in the mighty USofA, and if you're like me, anything below 40 degrees means you're staying the hell indoors. Thankfully, the Destructoid community is here to keep me company! Dtoid had a wonderfully active month in the C Blogs, Forums, "real world", and on the front page, so let's take a look at everything you've been up to! COMMUNITY BLOGS Nine C Blogs received the front-page treatment since we last spoke! Between Bory Borham's in-depth analyses of the newest Metal Gear Solid trailers to ChillyBilly's story of compulsive collecting gone bad to TriplZer0's five stages of backlog grief to Cutie Honey's unique recap of the games he played in 2012, the sheer variety of the things you wonderful people are coming up with never ceases to amaze me. Without a doubt my favorite blog of the year had to be the CblogRecaps crew's 2012 highlight reel, though. If you haven't checked out this compilation of almost every quality blog written in 2012, you're missing out! And speaking of missing out, if you're not up-to-date with all of our faptastic community podcasts... well, what the hell is wrong with you?! Check out all the aural badassness contained within these pages:
Awesome, right? Go give them a listen if you know what's good for ya! Dtoid's Artists Wanted and Bloggers Wanted have both enjoyed an incredible turnout for their latest assignments, too. Dozens of you shared your favorite videogame moments of 2012 with us, and nine of you bared your souls for our "self portrait" art assignment. New editions of both are coming soon! And that's it for the C Blogs! Thanks for all your hard work, everyone! FORUMS, WE HAVE THEM It's a new year, and that means brand new lists of stuff Dtoiders consumed! In 2012, Dtoiders completed a total of 2,523 games. Digtastik has already started up the 2013 Completed Games thread, so get to listing! Remember, if you finish 25 or more games in a single year there's a nifty badge in it for you! For those interested in listing other forms of media, Tarvu's got you covered with the 2013 Completed Films, Books, and Television Shows thread. The Forums version of Secret Santa has finished up! If you'd like to see what people got check out the Seacrest Santa 2012 thread. Jon Bloodspray wants to know what your New Year's resolutions are. Mine are top secret, so then nobody else can give me shit when I fail them. The Werewolf games on the Forums could use some more players, whether you're a veteran or a noob. Check out the thread for info on how to play or to look back at previous games! MAGFest XI happened at the beginning of January! This was the first gaming con I have been able to attend, and it was an absolute blast getting to meet you guys! Changston deserves big props for taking the lead on organizing things this year. The next major US event is PAX East 2013 from March 22nd to 24th, and N7 has a thread up if you're planning on going! Finally, don't forget that planning for Friday Night Fights starts in the Forums! If you're interested in hosting or joining a game with other Dtoiders, look for the weekly threads for the platform you prefer and jump on in! COMMUNITY PLAYDATES So as it sits I'd like to take this chance to re-educate everyone how Friday Night Fights work. "But Spencer" you might say, "didn't M. Randy Dixon just post an awesome guide a few days ago?" Shut up, sometimes it's best to reiterate things in rhyme. Let's do that: There once was a website so fair The venues were non-exclusive Alright, that fell apart but you guys get the idea. Go play games with your fellow community members! It's good for you. NARPS As Mxy and Jo just mentioned, MAGFest happened!! Some other things too... but mostly MAGFest! I wasn't able to attend, but I was tweeted at with pictures of crotches, so I'm guessing it was one hell of a party. If you went, you should share your stories in the comments! Changston and TheTino (that right, Tino?) put together a NARP in central Jersey, but as of now, there's no Cblog and no pictures. These classy gents know a thing or two about NARPing, so it's a safe bet everyone had a great time. Start planning your spring and summer NARPs now people! Get out of them emailers and into the forums and cblogs to get as much exposure as possible. Let me know if you ever want help or suggestions! Andy and I may even be working on something for this summer, so stay tuned! DTOID EUROPE Last month marked Dtoid UK's annual DecNARP, from which I was sadly absent due to my being in the line of duty in the hospitality industry during the festive period. Woe. Luckily community members JJMcCallum, iceblight and TheToiletDuck were there to chronicle the weekend and they have a lovely write up over here. For an idea of what they got up to, here's a summary from JJMcCallum:
So there you have it. Head on over and give it a read! For the newbies amongst us or anybody in need of a reminder, planning for events such as this one happens in our forum thread or the Google Groups mailer. Come and say hi! ---------- And that's it for this edition! Got any ideas for making this feature better? Please sound off in the comments! Until next time! <3 |
| Quantic Dream registers domain that references 'PS4' Posted: 22 Jan 2013 10:00 AM PST Superannuation has been on a roll lately with spotting curious domain registrations. As posted on Kotaku, it's been discovered that Heavy Rain developer Quantic Dream registered singularityps4.com back in November of last year, following the same URL naming convention used for the prior game's website. Currently, the studio has its PlayStation 3 title Beyond: Two Souls (pictured above) in development and, seemingly, this other project for Sony's unannounced PlayStation 4. Superannuation picked up on the fact that Quantic Dream founder David Cage has cited the book The Singularity is Near as inspiration for the team's Kara tech demonstration. Not to trash Beyond, but I was significantly more interested in seeing the ideas presented in the Kara demo expanded into a full game. Could such themes of artificial intelligence be explored on Sony's upcoming console? It seems entirely plausible. A Mystery ‘PS4’ Project Revealed?
