Retro City Rampage still has a secret Posted: 01 Jan 2013 12:00 PM PST
Retro City Rampage was one of the most interesting releases of 2012. Written and designed largely by one man, the game was in development for years, leaving hungry fans to lay in wait. Xbox 360 and Wii owners may still be waiting, as RCR is yet to hit those consoles. That will start to change tomorrow when the game finally sees release on XBLA. It will be interesting to see how well the game sells on the platform that was once thought of as the best bet for indie developers. It will also be interesting to see if the influx of new players will help to unravel all of RCR's secrets, including the shoe car seen above. It looks like a great choice for traversing a field of man eating plants. Also, a reminder to those of you who like Destructoid-- You can alter your appearance in RCR to look like me, Jim Sterling, Conrad Zimmerman, Max Scoville, and a variety of other higher profile members of the gaming enthusiast community. It's pretty neat! |
Zeno Clash II will emotionally disturb us this spring Posted: 01 Jan 2013 11:00 AM PST
The long-awaited sequel to Zeno Clash is finally set to arrive this spring, according to lead designer Carlos Bordeu. Three screenshots are on the official site, showing off the bizarre, new character designs and some new areas of the world, give us a taste of things to come when the game arrives on PC, XBLA, and PSN. Name a game world that feels like Salvador Dali made it. Zeno Clash is the only acceptable answer. Its creature designs and environments are both unnerving and gorgeous, pairing well with its cryptic story that deals with infanticide and insanity. I was in love with it and even enjoyed its less-than-ideal melee combat. With more experience and funding, I suspect ACE Team will expand on the original's twisted world and polish the fighting system. Zeno Clash 2 is one of my most anticipated games going into 2013 and these new screenshots only stoke that fire. |

[Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch King Foom play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.] With my trip to CES 2013, coming up at the end of the week, things are going to be pretty laid back on Mash Tactics for the next few days. I really can't think of a better time to continue working on my backlog. Hang out with us tonight, as I work on finishing Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. As amazing as this adventure has been, after forty hours, I'm ready to move on to other games. Can we kill it off during our four hour show this evening? Come by and find out! Destructoid's community blog highlights of 2012 Posted: 01 Jan 2013 08:00 AM PST
[The hard-working gents on your Cblog Recaps team put together this fantastic list of their personal favorite blogs of the year. Special thanks to ChillyBilly for the header! Want to see YOUR blog get mentioned on the front page in 2013? Go write something! --Mr Andy Dixon] There are plenty of videogame blogs here in the blogocube. Part of what makes Destructoid a unique slice of Internet pie is its wonderful community. The community seems to attract a wide range of interesting and talented people. The community blogs (or Cblogs) are a place where this is demonstrated on a daily basis. There are amazing writers, artists, musicians, you name it, that write blogs there. Some of the better ones even end up on the front page! So, please join us in our pretentious choosing of the best of the community blogs in 2012! It's been a weird year for me, but one of the things I really enjoyed about it was Destructoid, and specifically being on the Recaps team. It was my first full year, and it was lovely. There's a bit of work involved, but I love reading all the blogs and I think it's gotten me to interact with more people. I'm constantly blown away by the things I see in the community. The sheer amount of talent, creativity, and general awesomeness is astounding. Gunpei Yokoi remembered. A well-written, well-researched tribute to one of the most important people to ever be involved with videogames. locketheleisz's wonderful tribute to Gunpei Yokoi. If you don't know who that is, then I suggest you read this blog ASAP. This might be my personal pick for Blog of the Year. Dark Souls enthusiast, virtual train rider, and PAX HostMaster General, knutaf is the dude with the sandwiches. And blogs. He once stole a pallet of decoder rings; he is Asura's wrath; he is my unknowing soul-sista, he is Occams Electric Toothbrush. A man of discerning tastes; a lover of crying babies; and a most competitive introvert; his name is Corduroy Turtle. If these 3 fine young gentlemen put their minds together, they could do great things, I think. Or at least talk about doing great things for our entertainment. Dedication is something I see all over the Cblogs. We have many people dedicated in one way or another. The fine folks who do FNF as well as specialized things like TF2sdays, co-run by our beloved mann in hats, Swishiee. When dedication crosses a line, you people like Chris Carter, a.k.a. Magnalon, whose Quests make me wonder how he can still have time to be a regular contributor. In a similar feat, lostleader stuck with his new year's resolution, and finished 60 games in 2012! Another great example of dedication is Altum Videtur, who was doing an impressive job keeping track of the Cblog stats, and blogging about them. Sir Tobii is all over the place, doing thangs, but many of us know him for his amazing Podtoid posters, which are hilarious. I mean, seriously. Go look at them. Whether writing about writing, late night thoughts, Mass Effect 3, or just plain-old Recappin', StriderHoang is a ninja with words. Well... that might be a crappy analogy. But ya know ninja... Strider... whatever. Read him. Likewise, Wrenchfarm is always on point. His writing is consistently of high quality. I don't know how else to put it, the guy is damn good. Destructoid is about videogames, sure, but the people are the important part. The fact that we can be people to each other and not just shitty Internet jerks is special. These folks were brave enough to open up, and the community responded in kind. <3 How my face must have looked. A certain spam post, no? No. Thank you for making me laugh, Dao2-SKP. Ouch; I hurt my tongue trying to pronounce that. A sequel to the most popular choose-your-own-adventure game based on E3, by the comment watcher himself, Sean Daisy. UsurpMyProse had some humorous blogs, too, and more importantly, blogs with dads in them. Handy isn't just a funnyman, he's also a good writer. But he is one funny man. His blogs will have you rolfing and his Fanart Flops will leave you reeling. I'm still not sure exactly what happened here, but I'm glad to have been lured in by the most Orwellian writer of all time. A few more bloggers for whom I couldn't think of a "category", but still want to highlight: -crackedbat. His ode to the DS is sad and well-written, and his tale of what happens to promoted bloggers will have you laughing, as well as second-guessing. It was a great year for the community, and I thank you all for making my time here enjoyable. I can't wait to read all the things you write in 2013! Cheers! Happy Holidays everyone! It has been a pleasure to spend another year in your fine collective company. Dtoid is my home on the Internet, and I consider you all my (very strange) family. This marks my first full year as a recapper and I can't tell you how proud I am to be on the team. I love drinking your brain juice and breathing in the fumes of your creativity. Week after week, I continue to be amazed at the sheer dedication, imagination, and camaraderie that defines our community. So here we are. I’ve barely been a recapper for a week, and yet here I am writing an end-of-year Cblog Recap for all the wonderful people of Dtoid. I’m not exaggerating when I say that it is truly Warning, the following is going to be sappy as fuck. Shut up, it’s my first time so I’m allowed dammit! Oh man. 2012 was a wonderful year for me. I feel like I've grown much closer to the Destructoid community this year, for a number of reasons. For starters, I got to know so many things about many of you in all of your 10 Things blogs; thank you to everyone who contributed something! Then I was on my very first podcast! Shout-outs to the Secret Moon Base gang for having me on their show twice, it was a lot of fun! Finally, I went to my very first gaming convention at PAX Prime, and that was definitely the most fun I've had in a very long time! Shout-outs to everyone I met at PAX, and especially to knutaf for being an awesome dude and letting me stay at his place! It was a wonderful year to be a Dtoider, and I hope next year is just as great. Holy crap, what a year. What an amazing year. Being the new guy on the block was pretty scary for me. Silver Dragon was (and still is) a total boss of recapping and those are huge shoes to fill. As promised I did the worst possible job I could of it too. This year was really.... well shitty for me. Some of the hardest most painful things happened to me, but you all were here for me and lifted me back up (whether you realized it or not), with tons of support and a flood of awesome blogs.
Our Recaps go up everyday, with Topsauces and all. It's a good way to see what happened if you don't feel like going through the entire roll yourself. We work hard to give everyone a look, but the more the merrier. So comment and fap all you can. Even one comment can help encourage someone to write more. Thanks for a great 2012. and here's to an even better 2013! |
Bayonetta, Denjin Sakura, & more in SSF4:AE and SFxT mods Posted: 01 Jan 2013 05:30 AM PST
When Capcom officially endorsed Street Fighter X Mega Man, funding the free-to-play fan project and assisting in marketing and distribution, they took a huge step towards blurring the barriers between content creator and content consumer. Though many still found a way to be hostile towards the company for the move ("Argh! They stole a fan game instead of making a new Mega Man game themselves! What villainy!"), most were able to see that, despite some poor business and PR decisions in the past, there are folks that Capcom that respect and care about Capcom fans. I wonder how it would go over if Capcom started endorsing free, fan-made character mods as well? While it would probably be quite a pain in the ass to get the rights to Dr. Doom (less so for Bayonetta and Lollipop Chainsaw, as I'm sure Sega and the WB wouldn't mind the free publicity), a rebalanced version of the Denjin Sakura mod seen below is something Capcom could likely release for Super Street Fighter 4: AE without too much trouble. Though I'm sure plenty of fans would publicly complain about the move ("SSF4:AE is not Mugen aaaah so upsetting!") I'm sure they'd also download the content in a heartbeat, giving them an excuse to boot up the game again and remember why they are Capcom "fans" in the first place. Is there a downside to this I'm not seeing?

EA is shutting down online for these sports games soon Posted: 01 Jan 2013 05:00 AM PST
There can be a sense of urgency to buying games, knowing that if you wait too long, some of the functionality may no longer exist. Whether it's the servers getting physically shut down or simply a dwindling community of online players, sometimes, waiting for that great price drop might not be the right move after all. Electronic Arts is retiring a number of titles this month, starting with this selection on January 11, 2013:
This is followed by The Sims 2 (PC/Mac, and TheSims2.com) on January 14, in addition to Trenches II (iOS) on January 19. While I personally have never dabbled in online play for any of these games, I feel your pain if you have. Think of the lost Achievements and Trophies! Once you've come up with an idea, just post it (or a link to it) in the comments below. You have until this Sunday, January 6 at 11:59 PM Pacific to submit your entry, and the contest is open to anyone with a US mailing address (because shipping costs). Aww Yiss: MF'n Devil Survivor 2 anime trailer Posted: 01 Jan 2013 02:00 AM PST
I'm with our sister site Japanator in wondering why they didn't start with the first Devil Survivor game to make an anime, but that won't stop me from being excited about the upcoming Devil Survivor 2 adaptation, set to launch in Japan this spring. I suppose the sequel has a bigger stage for a story. The characters also might be a tad bit more interesting. Famitsu has a proper teaser trailer for us this morning, complete with flowy hair, wide-open eyes, and broken Tokyo landmarks. DS2 is a great game with a solid story that should make for good watching. Plus, high-set boobs are important for good anime. Devil Survivor 2 is set to kick off in April 2013. |

The Daily Hotness: Goodbye, 2012 Posted: 31 Dec 2012 03:59 PM PST
Man, time flies. What was your favorite moment of 2012? I provided you a handy video that compiles everything that happened this year into four minutes so, you know, you're welcome. I don't have a favorite moment because I don't actually exist. On the last day of 2012, Zynga shut down eleven games, Fez is coming to more platforms, we discussed wingsuits and how they took over the year, and a lot of other amazing things happened on 12/31/2012.
