Firefly Universe Online continuation revealed as a hoax Posted: 06 Jan 2013 09:00 AM PST Filed under: Culture, MMO industry, News items, Miscellaneous, Crowdfunding Did you think that the promise of Firefly Universe Online coming to life seemed a bit too good to be true? Or at least a bit unlikely? Because as it turns out, cynicism was the right attitude to take for this particular bit of news. The entire announcement that the game had the go-ahead to proceed was nothing more than a hoax. So we still won't see this particular version of the Firefly MMO project come to fruition, although not for the reason that many people expected. As argued by Kotaku, the hoax was perpetuated by The Yes Men, a strongly anticonsumerist group that apparently thought the best platform for this particular parody was a relatively obscure science fiction show. At this point it's not clear exactly what statement the group was attempting to make, although some sort of spoof on Kickstarter seems the most likely target. Either way, hopes for a Firefly MMO remain unrealized -- and at this point if such a game ever does get approved, we won't believe it's real until it's on the shelf. One Shots: Cleared for takeoff Posted: 06 Jan 2013 07:00 AM PST Filed under: Screenshots, EVE Online, Culture, Guild Wars 2, One Shots, The Secret World, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Miscellaneous Virtual animals exist to serve us as transportation, neutral landscape scenery, or the occasional target practice. Here at One Shots, we encourage the additional practice of harvesting as many virtual livers from them as possible on the off-chance that a quest-giver demands them.Reader John sent in this inspiring screenshot of a new friend he made in Star Wars: The Old Republic: "While Alderaan may be long and perhaps arduous as a planet, it has some absolutely gorgeous sights, and flying on the strange manta-ray beasts that carry you from base to base can be a wonderful experience." What other wonderful experiences exist after the jump? If you scroll past this post without clicking, you'll be driven mad with always wondering. Upcoming Age of Wushu wedding system detailed Posted: 06 Jan 2013 06:30 AM PST Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Game mechanics, MMO industry, New titles, News items, Free-to-play, Sandbox, Age of Wushu Looking for something to do in Age of Wushu besides kung fu fighting, crafting, or PvP? You could always get married.MMO Culture has a brief look at the wedding system that just made its way onto the game's Taiwan server. The marriage mechanics include a proposal, some sort of engagement process, a dowry, and a wedding banquet. Apparently there's also an NPC who handles proposals and functions as the Ming Dynasty equivalent of a singles website. It's worth noting that Shaolin players can only propose after they've obtained the Secular Disciple title. Thus far there's no word on when the marriage system will show up on Age of Wushu's western servers. The Daily Grind: What obstacle keeps you from playing an otherwise promising MMO? Posted: 06 Jan 2013 05:00 AM PST Filed under: Culture, Opinion, The Daily Grind, Miscellaneous The other day on the podcast we were talking about how there are just some MMOs we can't get into due to one or two very specific factors. Maybe it's the visuals, the animations, or perhaps the method of combat. Perhaps you can't get past the goofiness of one of the races or can't master the control scheme. What's frustrating is that you openly acknowledge that the game looks otherwise solid and that you'd probably enjoy it.I've experienced many of these moments. I would love to play DCUO, for example, but I loathe the character creator and the controls. That's a dealbreaker, ladies! EverQuest II repelled me for years due to its plasticky, uncanny valley looks, even though I knew it would be a deep, rewarding title. What obstacle keeps you from playing an otherwise promising MMO? And were you ever able to overcome that? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! In honor of the momentum that's building, the team revealed the Bugbear Sniper battle miniature, a howling deathbringer available at "Crowdforger level $700,000." The Phoenix Project aims to become a spiritual sequel and recreation of the game for players and by players, with a new trailer showcasing concept art as well as serving as a statement of purpose.Formed by several regulars of the Save CoH movement, The Phoenix Project is the work of Missing Worlds Media, a studio composed of several independent designers, programmers, and artists united by their love of the lost game. The game is still very early in the concept stages, but the studio has already announced that it will be built using the powerful CryENGINE 3. The Tattered Notebook: Tips and tricks to start the new year in EQII Posted: 05 Jan 2013 01:00 PM PST Filed under: Fantasy, EverQuest II, Opinion, Free-to-play, The Tattered Notebook Hellllloooooo fellow Norrathians! It is I, MJ -- the intrepid explorer, with a penchant for lightning and fire. And am I excited to be here!Right about now you may be noticing a slight change in authorship of your favorite EverQuest II column. You aren't seeing things; through a marvelous confluence of events (and no, I don't mean kidnapping Karen Bryan and locking her in a dank cell in Freeport!), I have the opportunity to share my love of this game with you alongside another Norrathian denizen, Jef Reahard. And any of you who have seen me gallivanting about EQII's many lands on Massively TV every EverQuest Two-sday can attest to the fact I really do love this game. So it is with no shortage of glee that I begin my first Tattered Notebook entry. Feastday, Blossoming 7, of the year 3897 Throughout my most recent journeys, I have noticed that there is a good chunk of population that has either returned to the lands after a lengthy absence (not unlike yours truly a few years back) or is pretty new. For both groups, there are a number of little things that may be unknown or forgotten; heck, I've played for a long time and am still discovering these things! So today I am going to share with you a few of the tips and tricks I have learned for a smoother Norrathian life. The Mog Log: 2013 for Final Fantasy XI and XIV Posted: 05 Jan 2013 11:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Final Fantasy XI, Expansions, Patches, Previews, Opinion, Consoles, Final Fantasy XIV, The Mog Log I'd like to say that 2012 started out with a lot of promise, but it really didn't. Looking back at my predictions for Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV a year ago, I see they weren't perfectly accurate, but they certainly fit well within the margin of error. Very little happened over in Final Fantasy XI's development, and Final Fantasy XIV managed to continue not wowing anyone, albeit partly because of the several delays to version 2.0 that now have it releasing around the middle of this year.If you haven't noticed a theme yet, here it is: I'm worried that by the time it does launch, no one will care any longer. But I'm getting ahead of myself. While I've split things up between recaps and forecasts in the past, in this case it's virtually impossible to do so. A lot of what has been done this year is banking entirely on the strength of what will be happening next, so Square was selling 2013 in the midst of 2012. So let's look at the past year for both games and the year to come, with an extra helping of hope and speculation for 2013.
