| Leaderboard: Cinematic trailers - awful or awesome? Posted: 28 Jan 2013 09:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, MMO industry, New titles, Opinion, Leaderboard, The Elder Scrolls Online So ZeniMax released a spiffy teaser vid for The Elder Scrolls Online last week. The six-minute clip had it all: dank dungeons, luscious locations, and enough daredevil gravity-defying combat to fill an entire summer's worth of action films. The only problem, to hear some folks tell it, was that none of the thrills, chills, and gratuitous violence on display will be possible in the finished game. The video was a cinematic, you see, and even though there's a decent amount of TESO gameplay footage floating around the internet already, the trailer served as something of a rallying cry for fans who'd rather see the cinematic's budget go toward a gameplay trailer. What say you, Leaderboard readers? Are MMO cinematics an awful waste of development dollars or do you enjoy them for what they are? Settle the score once and for all after the cut. | The Stream Team: The shadow knows edition, January 28 - February 3, 2013 Posted: 28 Jan 2013 06:00 AM PST Filed under: Polls, Massively Meta, Livestream, Miscellaneous, The Stream Team Will he or won't he? This week, eyes turn towards Punxsutawney Phil, that celebrated weatherman covered in fur, to learn whether winter is getting kicked out the door or it will stick around with feet propped on the coffee table like a bad houseguest whose welcome has long worn out.Our fate lies in the shadow, and only the shadow truly knows! Or does it? Maybe Phil has a little under-the-table agreement going with his shadow and the results are totally precalculated. Perhaps the groundhog and his shadow want only to mess with us, toying with our hopes and emotions. Resist this type of tyrannical manipulation, I say! Resist by ignoring the threat (or promise) of the weather and focus your energies on watching Massively TV. After all, you can rest assured that The Stream Team would never mess with you like that. Lead you off a cliff, however, is an entirely different matter... Continue reading The Stream Team: The shadow knows edition, January 28 - February 3, 2013

| The Repopulation to feature instanced, open-world, and player city housing Posted: 28 Jan 2013 05:30 AM PST Filed under: Betas, Sci-fi, Game mechanics, MMO industry, New titles, News items, Sandbox, Housing MMO player housing usually comes in one of two varieties: instanced or open-world. The Repopulation, on the other hand, will feature both as well as a third option tied to player-owned cities. The instanced housing will be available to everyone, though players of different factions will be restricted to different housing neighborhoods. Open-world housing will be limited, of course, but players will also be able to buy and sell the plots. Player city housing will feature a similar plot system that is administered by the owner of the city in question. Above & Beyond Technologies has authored a new blog post explaining The Repopulation's housing systems in further detail. Read all about it at the game's official website.

| The Daily Grind: Are your alts unique characters? Posted: 28 Jan 2013 05:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, EverQuest II, Classes, Opinion, Free-to-play, Roleplaying If you were to look over my army of EverQuest II alts, you'd see that seven of them boast identical visuals and single-letter variations on the same name. This is due to the fact that I wanted to try a bunch of EQII's classes while roleplaying a single personality. Most of these guys were made many years ago, and the sad fact is that I don't roleplay much anymore, but if I did I'd have what amounts to Norrath's biggest jack-of-all-trades since technically there's a single dark elf out there who's a Shadowknight, a Guardian, a Berserker, a Bruiser, a Dirge, a Brigand, and an Assassin. And that's not even looking at all his tradeskill professions, either. What about you, Massively folk? Assuming you care about roleplay, are your alts unique characters or are they class-based variations on the same individual?

| MMO Week in Review: Speak quickly, outlander, or go away Posted: 27 Jan 2013 05:00 PM PST Filed under: Massively Meta, Week in Review, Miscellaneous Those of us who predicted The Elder Scrolls Online would never make its fall 2013 launch estimate might turn out to be wrong after all: This week Zenimax opened beta signups and posted a riveting six-minute cinematic for the game, prompting both awe and concerns over the game's Elder Scrollsiness. Your mileage may very, but I thought it at least captured the right tone for the PvP setting the game hopes to embrace. Hit the jump for a look at this week's other top MMO stories. I promise, no one will be shooting arrows at you as you go. Continue reading MMO Week in Review: Speak quickly, outlander, or go away

| EVE Evolved: Expanding on wormholes Posted: 27 Jan 2013 03:00 PM PST Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Expansions, Game mechanics, Lore, Patches, PvP, Endgame, PvE, Opinion, Races, EVE Evolved, Sandbox It's no secret that I'm nuts about wormholes! Last week I looked at the reasons why EVE Online's Apocrypha expansion was such a big success and rejoiced at the recent announcement that CCP will be developing similar laterally designed expansions from now on. In the announcement, developers wrote that they would ideally have liked to iterate on Apocrypha's wormhole gameplay for several releases, which got me thinking about how that gameplay could be expanded on now. Wormholes were a massive catalyst for exploration, small-scale colonisation, industry and PvP, but would it be possible to recapture that magic in an expansion? The Sleeper storyline certainly evolved with the Incursion expansion as it became known that Sansha forces were able to control wormholes and had invaded Jovian space, but that story sadly didn't translate into gameplay for people living inside wormholes. There's no risk of running into the Sansha home system on your travels, and Sansha forces will never lock down a wormhole system and attack your starbase. That feels like a bit of a wasted opportunity to me, and I worry that a new wormhole expansion could similarly pass up the opportunity to add interesting new gameplay. Adding more hidden wormhole systems and combat sites would be fun for a while, but the underlying wormhole mechanics and NPC capabilities are already common knowledge. In this week's EVE Evolved, I look at various ways that a future wormhole expansion for EVE could recapture the magic of Sleeper space. Continue reading EVE Evolved: Expanding on wormholes

| Colossal 3000-man battle rocks EVE Online Posted: 27 Jan 2013 01:15 PM PST Filed under: Sci-fi, Video, EVE Online, Culture, Events, in-game, Game mechanics, Lore, PvP, Endgame, News items, Sandbox What started out as a few EVE Online alliances forming up PvP fleets last night rapidly evolved into one of the largest PvP battles in the game's history. Reports indicate that a total of over 3,000 players may have been involved in the colossal battle in the lowsec system of Asakai in the early hours of this morning, with hundreds of corporations taking sides in the conflict. The battle officially centred around a Liandri Covenant staging starbase in the Caldari faction warfare system of Asakai, but things rapidly got out of control as practically every major alliance with a capital fleet threw its own forces into the mix for a bit of fun and the chance to kill a titan or two.The system peaked at around 2,800 players fighting simultaneously, just 300 short of beating 2010's world record battle in LXQ2-T. Lag set in with around 700 players in the system, but EVE's Time Dilation feature kept the server running amicably up into the thousands of players. At the peak of the battle, the system was running at just 10% normal speed and people were experiencing several-minute delays on module activations. Dozens of valuable capital ships and supercapitals were destroyed, in addition to several titans worth several thousand dollars each. A few players filmed parts of the action and have shared footage of the slow-motion battle on YouTube. | Path of Exile developers discuss open beta success Posted: 27 Jan 2013 12:00 PM PST Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Launches, News items, Free-to-play Open betas are stressful for developers. Not just because it's the moment that the game is suddenly available for public discussion and evaluation, but also because it's time to see how well the infrastructure holds up under an onslaught of new players. Path of Exile's development team recently went through that stress, and in a new letter to the community, players and onlookers alike can see how the game weathered the transition. Here's the quick summary: Very well.At the time of the letter, the game's peak concurrency was at 56,700 players, more than had been expected but very close to what the servers could handle. The game struggled a bit with patch downloads due to the CDN system immediately after launch, and there have been some crashes with various realms, but by and large the team seems happy with how the game is going and with overall sales figures. If you want more of the hard details on what a 30-hour open beta launch day looks like, read the full letter. And then get back to clicking things for money and loot.
