| The Mog Log: A year of columns in review Posted: 26 Jan 2013 09:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Final Fantasy XI, Culture, Opinion, Consoles, Final Fantasy XIV, The Mog Log Three years is not a lot of time to do anything. I'm continually surprised by the fact that I've been writing about video games professionally for three years of my life, which is admittedly only 10% of my life to date but still seems astonishing. This also marks the start of the third year of The Mog Log, which means that I've been talking about moogles and cat-women professionally for a tenth of my life.I use thoughts like that to keep me warm at night. As always, the anniversary mark is about the time when I look back at the column thus far and see how well it's done as a whole. Last year I wanted to really switch up what I did with my coverage for Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XI, and I think that by and large it worked pretty well. So let's do the usual thing wherein I look back, you take a trip down memory lane with me, and we all walk away feeling smarter. Or, if that doesn't sound interesting, you could just go look at some cat pictures. Continue reading The Mog Log: A year of columns in review

| WRUP: Not another post about Sagrada Familia edition Posted: 26 Jan 2013 07:00 AM PST Filed under: Massively Meta, Miscellaneous Contrary to what you might think, this post really isn't about Sagrada Familia. It's more about the fact that I decided to foolishly purchase a Nanoblocks set attempting to replicate the sight of this massive structure. This was revealed to be an intensely poor decision after about five seconds, for reasons including but not limited to a lack of stability, a poor choice of colors, and decisions about assembly that require a level of manual dexterity that even I don't naturally possess. After several hours of work, the completed project sits on my desk, a reminder that the next time I'm curious about this sort of thing I should just try assembling some LEGO blocks with a set of tweezers. But the mistakes of the week can be overridden by the glories of the weekend, and this week's WRUP is just past the cut. Check out our weekend plans and let us know what you'll be up to over the next two days in the comments. Continue reading WRUP: Not another post about Sagrada Familia edition

| The Daily Grind: Have you ever sat on a game before playing it? Posted: 26 Jan 2013 05:00 AM PST Filed under: Culture, Opinion, The Daily Grind, Humor, Miscellaneous So The Secret World was on sale on Origin this week for $10. Since it's buy-to-play at this point, that's well within the realm of prices where I start nodding and saying that it's a good deal, and the next thing I knew, I had bought the game. And I installed it. And now I've... well... I don't know exactly. I'm not playing it yet, but there's no real reason not to. It's not as if I'm worried about wasting my free month or something. But I bought it, and I own it, and now I'm just sitting on it. Sometimes we buy MMOs knowing that we'll start playing them soon but not right now. I let Guild Wars 2 sit for a long while before I got in and started playing. So today the question is whether or not you've ever bought a game and then sat on it for a while before playing it? Including if you literally put the game box on a chair and parked there for a couple of hours, I suppose. Everyone has rituals.

| Betawatch: January 19 - 25, 2013 Posted: 25 Jan 2013 05:00 PM PST Filed under: Betas, MMO industry, New titles, News items, Betawatch, Miscellaneous This week has been a week for games to let down their hair, dress comfortably, and throw open the doors for open beta. SMITE, Path of Exile, DUST 514, and DK Online all threw open the doors to new waves of beta testers, while Firefall is hosting an open beta weekend event. While The Elder Scrolls Online isn't actually in testing yet, the game is accepting signups for beta now. Meanwhile, City of Steam and the much anticipated ArcheAge have both picked up publishers, ensuring the release of the latter and helping the former reach a wider audience. Scarlet Blade has entered its closed beta or closed alpha test, depending on who you ask, featuring a variety of women fighting one another with large guns and outfits composed of electrical tape. There's plenty more going on in the beta field, though, so you can check past the break for the full list. If you see something we may have missed or know of a game that crept into launch sneakily, let us know down in the comments. Continue reading Betawatch: January 19 - 25, 2013

| Storyboard: One of us is going down Posted: 25 Jan 2013 04:00 PM PST Filed under: Culture, Opinion, Roleplaying, Storyboard, Miscellaneous You and your group of roleplaying companions need something new to do. You've grown tired of sitting around talking about problems in the outside world or engaging in a non-stop soap opera drama wherein someone is always sleeping with someone else inappropriately. By complete coincidence, you and your companions all appear to be heavily armed and armored, leading to an excellent suggestion -- you should go out and get involved in a conflict! A fracas of some kind! What a concept!Sarcasm aside, long-running conflicts are a lot of fun when handled right. While I've talked about them in brief before, today I want to look at a handful of common conflict types and offer some tips about how to run them without tears. If you think drama can spill over into OOC channels when it's just a matter of pretend romances being spurned, you don't even want to know what happens when the knives come out. | DayZ standalone version jacks up graphics, player customization Posted: 25 Jan 2013 02:00 PM PST Filed under: Betas, Horror, MMOFPS, Post-Apocalyptic, Dev Diaries, Miscellaneous The race to a DayZ standalone version release is on, and creator Dean Hall is feeling excited and confident about the progress being made. Hall posted a list of improvements that the team is currently working on, from graphics to customization, and gave an update regarding the testing process.DayZ standalone's graphics are clearly improved from the ARMA II-modded version, and Hall includes side-by-side comparison photos of a town to show just how big of a difference the new engine makes. He said that the team is working on vehicle, character, and weapon customizations, although players will find that the real avatar customization will come while engaging in the game proper. One notable entry on Hall's list is the fact that the team is building the servers to be "MMO-like" so that hacking and cheating will be markedly more difficult. He also said that while external testers haven't been invited into the beta yet, this will happen once the full server/client architecture is completed.

| Touring the Art of Blizzard at Gallery Nucleus Posted: 25 Jan 2013 01:00 PM PST Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Horror, Galleries, Culture, Events, real-world, Launches, Lore, MMO industry, News items, Massively Event Coverage, Promotions, Diablo III The exhibit, hosted by the local Gallery Nucleus, kicked off with a well-attended Saturday night reception that drew in visitors more accustomed to Fel Reavers than fine art. Attendees covered the full range of demographics, wearing anything from Horde hoodies to shiny stilettos (since people in costume were let in for free, it's important to note that we're referring to the shoes, not the daggers). Massively and our sister site WoW Insider were on hand to take in the spectacle. So what did we see? Continue reading Touring the Art of Blizzard at Gallery Nucleus

| Age of Wushu delays launch to 'spring 2013' Posted: 25 Jan 2013 12:30 PM PST Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Launches, MMO industry, Sandbox, Age of Wushu Time to put on your lemon faces, folks, because this news is going to make you pucker up: Snail Games has announced that Age of Wushu is delaying its launch. The release, which was originally scheduled for February 1st, has now been moved to a more nebulous "spring 2013."The studio says that the delay is the result of testing: "Based on player feedback and data from the second closed beta, we have decided to revise the launch timing to spring 2013. This will allow us to better address community feedback and continue to update the game. When a more precise update on the release timing is available, we will share that information."

| Take a look at character creation for all Asta races in new videos Posted: 25 Jan 2013 12:00 PM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Video, Previews, News items Character creation. For some players, it's the boring part of the game that you have to click through quickly in order to get on with the hitting. For others, it's half of the reason you're playing the game at all. If you're of the former camp, you're probably not going to get much out of this series of high-definition videos detailing character creation for all the races in Asta: The War of Tears and Wind. But if you're in the latter camp, you've got some viewing ahead of you.All six races from the game have character creation extensively displayed, including both genders for the dimorphic races getting separate treatment. Each of the races also has some unique features, ranging from the horns of the Dragon race to the tusks of the Oni race to the spine apparently constructed from flexible tubing of the Fox race. (Or maybe the female model is just posed oddly.) While there's no word yet on release, you can still look longingly at all of the videos and start thinking about what you'd want to play if and when the game comes overseas. | Prepare to celebrate the Canthan New Year in Guild Wars Posted: 25 Jan 2013 10:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Guild Wars, Events, in-game, Lore, News items It's time to celebrate the new year! What, why are you rolling your eyes and saying that happened weeks ago? This is the Canthan New Year we're talking about in Guild Wars, a chance for Canthan citizens and less-fortunate Tyrian adventurers to take part in games and festivities while hoping to please the celestial animals for a fortunate new year. And this time around, there are more than a few surprises waiting in the wings even for veteran players. This year's festival starts at 3:00 p.m. EST on January 31st and runs through February 7th, the start of a new policy for the game that will keep all events running for at least a week on fixed dates every year. Players will be able to aid in the preparation of the celestial animal feast, have their fortunes read, and play games on the Shing Jea Boardwalk. There will also be racing events in the Rollerbeetle Racing Arena and combat events in the Dragon Arena if you prefer. And there are special minipets to unlock as well as the promise of a mystery reward if the Celestial Animals are pleased with their meal. So even if you thought you were done with celebrating another year, you might want to pop back into Guild Wars and get back to the celebration.

| Second Wind: Taking another look at TERA Posted: 25 Jan 2013 09:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Opinion, Free-to-play, Hands-on, TERA, Second Wind I am beautiful. Seriously, I'm the best-looking game character that has ever pretended to live. Not only am I gorgeous, I'm lethal. With my massive lance, heavy shield, and ridiculously tight dress, I can make short work of pretty much any foe with the stones to come at me. I am as dangerous as I am attractive, and that is saying quite a bit. This is TERA. Launched in the west by En Masse Entertainment back in May, the fantasy MMO promised gorgeous graphics, fast-paced action combat and a different way to experience a now-familiar formula. Lured in by pretty trailers and compelling class descriptions, I picked up the collector's edition of the game just before release. I played for a few weeks, streamed it a couple of times, and promptly forgot it existed. When my initial 30 days expired, I never subscribed for more. But now TERA is going free-to-play. And since En Masse was kind enough to give me (and everyone else) a couple of free weeks of playtime before the F2P transition, I figured now was as good a time as any to revisit the title and see if removing my wallet from the equation would be enough to keep me engaged. The answer? Perhaps. Continue reading Second Wind: Taking another look at TERA
