And now, thanks to a publishing partnership with Reality Squared Games, the industrial age fantasy game will have access to a wider audience.R2 Games already has other free-to-play titles in its portfolio, but City of Steam will be the first using the Unity 3D engine. R2 Games CEO Jared Psigoda stated, "I see a lot of potential in City of Steam. Mechanist Games' approach to making a game is something we're thrilled to be a part of. | Return to Ekrund now in Warhammer Online's live event Posted: 22 Jan 2013 08:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Events, in-game, PvP, Warhammer Online, News items A week ago, it was only a tease hinted at on Twitter. Now, it's a sure thing: The Return to Ekrund live event is on Warhammer Online servers. The event takes place in or around Ekrund, the tier one starting area for Dwarven Oathbreakers. Players can work through the many steps of the event to earn special rewards. Event tasks include safely escorting Dwarf historians, killing enemy Greenskins, piecing together puzzles, and more.Worried about turning into a chicken because your level is too high for a starting zone event? Don't be! Higher level players are tweaked in the RvR lakes (the PvP areas) and returned to a level fit for the area. However, don't expect to keep all your high-powered skills and your fast mount when you level down; you actually only get access to the skills, abilities, and tactics of that level!

| The Daily Grind: Would you buy a console to play an MMO? Posted: 22 Jan 2013 05:00 AM PST Filed under: Sci-fi, Business models, MMO industry, Opinion, The Daily Grind, Consoles, DUST 514, Miscellaneous Imagine there's an MMO you really want to play (for some of you, this is going to take a lot of imagination, but pretend, for just this question, that you actually like playing the MMOs you play). Maybe the game is going to connect to an existing MMO in a novel way, or maybe it's that $300,000,000 ultimate sandbox you've been hoping for. This theoretical MMO is just perfect for you, and you need to play it like yesterday.Except that it's coming out on consoles, and only on consoles for the foreseeable future. And it's a console you don't already own. Nooooooooooo! I picked up a PS3 partly for this reason -- to play PS3-exclusive games like Journey. But an MMO? That would take a lot more doing; it'd have to be a truly compelling world that offers something I can't get anywhere else. Whether or not it's your thing, DUST 514 is asking just this question of gamers, but it wasn't the first and it surely won't be the last. So what about you? Would you buy a console just to play an MMO -- if not DUST, then some other game?

| Check out ten minutes of Asta game footage Posted: 21 Jan 2013 06:00 PM PST Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Video, New titles, News items The folks at Asta: The War of Tears and Winds are probably hoping that Mists of Pandaria players will crave even more Asian World of Warcraft action as evidenced by a new video that shows off the game's looks and combat. Check out the new footage after the jump and see whether this might tempt you to put your current game down in the future. | Not So Massively: Jay Wilson steps down, layoffs at Gas Powered Games Posted: 21 Jan 2013 05:00 PM PST Filed under: Video, Business models, Culture, Game mechanics, Launches, New titles, Patches, News items, Free-to-play, Dev Diaries, Not So Massively, MOBA, League of Legends, Diablo III, Crowdfunding Gas Powered Games laid off 80% of its workforce this week as the studio's future became uncertain. CEO Chris Taylor revealed that if his Kickstarter campaign for new action RPG Wildman fails, the company will have to close its doors. Jay Wilson stepped down as Diablo III's Lead Game Designer to move on to other projects but assured players that the game will continue to be regularly updated. With less than a week to go until Path of Exile opens its doors to the public, two Massively freelancers recently tried the game and delivered their verdicts.Rise of Immortals released its new All Random All Mid game mode that promises short casual matches, while Dota 2 revealed its new Least Played mode that forces players to pick heroes they ordinarily avoid. | ArcheAge shows graphical frills thanks to Nvidia Posted: 21 Jan 2013 04:00 PM PST Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Video, ArcheAge It's not exactly a secret that ArcheAge is a good-looking game, but did you know just how good-looking it can get? Thanks to the magical, wonderful power of Nvidia graphics cards, now we can.XLGAMES and Nvidia teamed up for a video to show off the premium graphical effects that ArcheAge is capable of putting forth. The video continually turns effects on and off for comparison purposes, showing how much more defined the world can be with all of the effects turned on. | Leaderboard: Lord of the Rings Online vs. Star Trek Online Posted: 21 Jan 2013 03:00 PM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Sci-fi, Lord of the Rings Online, MMO industry, Opinion, Star Trek Online, Free-to-play, Leaderboard IP-based MMOs are both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, if they're done right they can be a gateway to the genre for those unfamiliar with MMOs as well as a fresh focal point for dedicated IP fans. On the other hand, IP-based games can take disastrous liberties with their source material that make for an off-putting experience. In some cases, they can also simply be bad games. For today's Leaderboard we're pitting a couple of genre heavyweights against one another to see which proves more popular. Lord of the Rings Online and Star Trek Online aren't the only IP-based MMOs out there, but they've both been around for a while and are both reasonably successful. Which do you think does a better job of translating its source material into a fun MMO? Vote after the cut! Continue reading Leaderboard: Lord of the Rings Online vs. Star Trek Online

| Captain's Log: Star Trek Online enlists Denise Crosby for secret project Posted: 21 Jan 2013 01:00 PM PST Filed under: Sci-fi, Events, in-game, Patches, News items, Opinion, Star Trek Online, Free-to-play, Captain's Log, Anniversary Sometimes it's a little tricky to write about an MMO right before content releases. There's usually a definite slump in developer interactivity as the team prepares for what will inevitably be a very busy time. Star Trek Online is no exception to this rule, and this is one of those weeks. We're still about two weeks away from celebrating Star Trek Online's third anniversary. To date, we have only a few ideas about what the anniversary celebration might entail, but not much else has been revealed by the team at Cryptic. However, that doesn't mean nothing has happened. Quite the contrary! There are a few things to talk about this week, including some fun news that actress Denise Crosby has been tapped to participate in the game. So join me past the break as I touch on some of the fun stuff in STO that we're hearing about! Continue reading Captain's Log: Star Trek Online enlists Denise Crosby for secret project

| Dave Brevik defends the cost of Marvel Heroes' Ultimate Pack Posted: 21 Jan 2013 12:00 PM PST Filed under: Super-hero, Business models, MMO industry, News items, Free-to-play, Marvel Heroes The idea of spending nearly $200 on a free-to-play title before it releases seems counterintuitive. Still, if you want the Ultimate Pack for Marvel Heroes, that's precisely what you'll need to do, a move that's sparked enough controversy for Gazillion's CEO Dave Brevik to comment on the pack. While Brevik admits that the price is quite hefty, he emphasizes that it's a substantial long-term discount for players and isn't so unusual when you consider the variety of other games offering collector's editions at similar price points. He points out that he's already spent much more than that playing League of Legends through a variety of small purchases. Brevik also takes the time to defend the game from other criticisms regarding its interface, graphics, and story, arguing that he is happy with the game in its current state while stressing that it is currently a beta. He also mentions that the pre-purchase packs are entirely optional and much of the content within can be earned within the game. Marvel Heroes is currently on track for a release in the spring of this year.

| Chaos Theory: ARG expands The Secret World Posted: 21 Jan 2013 11:00 AM PST Filed under: Horror, Real life, Events, real-world, Opinion, Free-to-play, The Secret World, Chaos Theory If there is one thing that many MMOs have in common, it's in-game events. Just about every title has a least one event, often centered around holidays, where players do special tasks in-game and receive special gifts. The Secret World is no different, most recently running an apocalyptic event with Mayan zombies for players to trip over. But who says all events have to actually be in-game? Certainly not Funcom.Among the other hooplah over the supposed end of the world last month, The Secret World fans were participating in the game's latest Alternate Reality Game (ARG). Set out in the real world, the ARG let anyone -- player or not -- experience the ambiance of TSW investigation missions by solving a set of conspiracy-laden tasks and receiving in-game rewards. While the first ARG was via Facebook, this one utilized email, a special website, and even text messages and tweets. Some missions were solo events, while others required the world-wide community to band together to complete. And there's nothing like a common goal to bring folks together (even in some unexpected ways!). Didn't have a chance to play all the way through? It's not too late; the situation room is still open. Go ahead and put your thinking cap on and prepare to be drawn into a world of conspiracies, whether you play TSW or not. Continue reading Chaos Theory: ARG expands The Secret World

| A newbie in Heroes of Newerth: How patch 3.0 improves the MOBA experience Posted: 21 Jan 2013 10:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Game mechanics, Patches, Previews, Free-to-play, Massively Interviews, Massively Event Coverage, MOBA My first experiences in the MOBA genre went something like this: "What do you mean last-hitting and how come these towers keep shooting me? I'm a hero, for freak's sake!" to which my teammate would respond, "Quit feeding and die in a fire." It was a confusing and tumultuous time. Thankfully, the genre has taken a turn for the better, adding more in-depth tutorials, bot matches, and various other aids to help new players transition into the game and beef up the competitive numbers.Heroes of Newerth is no exception. S2 Games is preparing to globally launch (yes, everywhere at the same time) patch 3.0 on January 31st, 2013, and it will include a lane full of visual enhancements, bots with customizable AI, and a stronger emphasis on teaching new players the ropes. Could HoN establish itself as the MOBA for new players of the genre? We trekked to a demo in San Francisco last week to find out. | The Nexus Telegraph: Sci-fi commonalities to expect in WildStar Posted: 21 Jan 2013 09:00 AM PST Filed under: Sci-fi, Game mechanics, Opinion, WildStar, The Nexus Telegraph There are certain bits that sort of obscure this fact, but when you get down to it, WildStar is a science fiction game -- a science fiction game taking lots of cues from more fantastical offerings and Westerns, but still science fiction at its heart. And that means that it has certain expectations from potential players, just like fantasy games are expected to have elves and superhero games are expected to have someone who is only distinguishable from Superman by the lack of a logo. Here's the thing, though: Science fiction covers a pretty wide range of setting, so some of those expectations may or may not come to pass with the game. Today I want to talk about some of those reasonable guesses, the sort of thing that you just think has to be in a science fiction game. Is WildStar going to feature these elements? I'm not sure, but I can make some guesses (which might be proved wrong before the week is out, but guessing is fun like that).
