| Hands-on with the Chinese war machines in World of Tanks' patch 8.3 Posted: 16 Jan 2013 09:00 AM PST Filed under: Interviews, Patches, Previews, Free-to-play, Hands-on, World of Tanks To keep a burgeoning community of 45 million registered users happy, the developers behind World of Tanks know to keep the content coming. After the overhauled graphics, physics, and sounds brought about by patch 8.0 last September, we're already on the cusp of version 8.3. It's out tomorrow, and that means 17 new tanks for the as-of-now-underserved Chinese tech tree."The Chinese are a middle-of-the-road tree," says Paul Hobbs, content manager with Wargaming.net. "They don't excel in any one attribute. They have high firepower, a fair amount of maneuverability, and decent armor and aim speed." | The Art of Wushu: The right martial arts school for you Posted: 16 Jan 2013 06:00 AM PST Filed under: PvP, PvE, Opinion, Free-to-play, Sandbox, Age of Wushu, The Art of Wushu Normally at Massively, we start off a column by linking to relevant community sites and information resources for a game. Things are a bit different with Age of Wushu, however. Aside from the main community site and the wiki currently under construction, there isn't much information about the game available in English.Running biweekly, The Art of Wushu will help you navigate the sprawling Wushu sandbox. This week, we'll be looking at the various martial arts schools in the game and which schools to select in order to fit your preferred playstyle. While we can't go over each school's intricacies in depth, we'll do our best to give you a brief primer on what you can expect as a member of a particular school. Full details are viewable on the official TERA website.

| The Daily Grind: If you could erase your memories of a game for a fresh experience, would you? Posted: 16 Jan 2013 05:00 AM PST Filed under: Culture, Opinion, The Daily Grind, Miscellaneous No matter how we attempt to come at our favorite MMO at a new angle, the truth is that it's impossible to fully recapture the wonder, the enormity, and the uncertainty that came with your first few days in the game. There was something special about all of that unknown, wasn't there? It's easy to fondly recall a time when you didn't know all of the mechanics like the back of your hand, but had to figure everything out one step at a time.I've seen a lot of people try to emulate the giddy high of those first days in a number of ways, which makes me wonder if a memory-wiping service would be embraced by some. It's kind of tempting to think about: completely erasing any of your experiences from a game, allowing you to try it for the first time a second time. So if this hypothetical service was a real thing, would you take advantage of rebooting your memories for a fresh take at your favorite MMO?

| Jukebox Heroes: Dark Age of Camelot's soundtrack Posted: 15 Jan 2013 05:00 PM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Dark Age of Camelot, Opinion, Jukebox Heroes, Music Dark Age of Camelot has a strange soundtrack history. The game came out with an official soundtrack in 2002 that is (a) wonderful, (b) absolutely worth buying, and (c) only marginally related to the actual in-game music. There are really terrific tracks on this, such as Breton Melody and The Rap, which I do wish I could share with you. Unfortunately, Universal Music Group is quite aggressive on keeping this CD's tracks off of sites like YouTube, so you will have to take my word for it that it's worth pursuing in your own time. Then, of course, there's the actual score that's heard in the game, and that's what we'll be focusing on today. The original score and the first expansion was composed by Rik Schaffer of Womb Music. Schaffer worked with the team to come up with a multi-track format so that DAoC could weave together songs based on where you were and what was going on all around you. "It's a really neat system that provides a real sense of atmosphere as you are playing -- almost like a movie soundtrack," said Producer Matt Firor in a 2002 interview. We've got a lot of musical ground to cover, so let's start moving! Continue reading Jukebox Heroes: Dark Age of Camelot's soundtrack

| Hyperspace Beacon: SWTOR's stunlocked Posted: 15 Jan 2013 04:00 PM PST Filed under: Sci-fi, Classes, Game mechanics, PvP, Opinion, Free-to-play, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Hyperspace Beacon How many times have you booted up Star Wars: The Old Republic to have a little fun in PvP only to be frustrated by certain mechanics? How many times have you been playing the Alderaan warzone, or worse, the Ancient Hypergate warzone, and you are about to cap the node but are suddenly impeded because your character has fallen asleep? Of course, you know there's an Assassin or Shadow there using Mind Trap or Mind Maze.Your first instinct is to set yourself free using your stun break, but it occurs to you that if you use your stun break, then the opponent is just going to use that ability again, and then you won't have any way to break free. However, if you don't break free, then he will cap the node you're supposed to be guarding. It looks to me as if your enemy just hit his I-win button. If it isn't already obvious, today I'd like to talk about stuns and other movement-impairing effects in SWTOR. Although it'd be really easy to write these abilities off as broken, I believe that there are some misunderstandings about the resolve system and a couple of simple fixes would make the system more palatable to the average player. | EVE Online gets 'ambitious' in 2013 Posted: 15 Jan 2013 02:30 PM PST Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Expansions, Dev Diaries, Sandbox Strap yourselves in: EVE Online is pushing the threshold in 2013, and there's no looking back. Two producer's letters today from the game attempt to outline the goodness coming for the game and its players in the coming months.Executive Producer Jon Lander puts it all on the line with his letter: "I think it is time to be a little more ambitious. Nothing crazy or away from the core spaceship game that is EVE, but something more inspiring for everyone." It's this ambition that's driving him and the team to produce "compelling themes" for future content that will take place across all of the game's systems. There's also a letter from new Senior Producer Andie Nordgren, who is now in charge of the product vision and roadmap for the game. Nordgren says that the team will create content for both "instigators" and "enablers" of sandbox fun, but the big priority for CCP is gearing up for the themed summer expansion.

| Wakfu changes North American publishing away from Square Enix Posted: 15 Jan 2013 01:45 PM PST Filed under: Fantasy, MMO industry, Free-to-play North American fans of the sandbox MMO Wakfu may be interested to hear that the game will be switching publishers in the West as announced in a press release earlier today.Square Enix will be handing full responsibility and control of the game in North American markets over to the game's developer, Ankama Games, starting March 1, 2013. This control includes community management, customer support, promotion, sales, marketing, and all other live operation duties. All characters and progress will not be affected by the transition. Our own Beau Hindman gave Wakfu his "The Bestest Ever" award for 2012 and the game has earned respect among many sandbox fans for its unique gameplay and mechanics. But recent layoffs at Square Enix had us all wondering how its MMO division would be affected. Despite claims to to the contrary less than a month ago, this is now a thing that is happening. Be sure to read through the updated FAQ on Wakfu's website for more information. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

| The Secret World offers snazzy game apparel Posted: 15 Jan 2013 01:30 PM PST Filed under: Horror, Sci-fi, MMO industry, Free-to-play, The Secret World It's often seemed unfair that we were able to dress up our characters in The Secret World with all manner of fashionable attire and yet couldn't be that cool in real life. That's about to change, as Funcom's partnered up with WeLoveFine.com to offer a line of official TSW gear.As you might expect, t-shirts make up a bulk of the store's offerings. These include straight-forward logos of the game's factions as well as humorous mock-ups of in-game places. Fans of the Innsmouth Academy can now register for classes with an official hoodie of this fictitious school, and there are two messenger bags that would be perfect for toting your homework around.

| SWTOR adding Gree event, galactic reputation system Posted: 15 Jan 2013 01:00 PM PST Filed under: Sci-fi, Patches, Previews, Free-to-play, Star Wars: The Old Republic Star Wars: The Old Republic may not be our only hope, but that doesn't mean it's not a viable date candidate. The dashing bachelor is sprucing up its resume with the addition of two new features to the game in the near future: a galactic reputation system and a recurring event starring the Gree. The Relics of the Gree event will take place sporadically on the endgame planet of Ilum. It's there that a giant Gree starship will be discovered, explored, and possibly conquered. BioWare says that players can "earn exclusive Gree technology" in the form of cool new gear. The galactic reputation system might be a powerful incentive to level up all over again. The system adds to the game a new rep grind, which can be leveled up by doing Gree, Voss, or military missions. Reputation points are shared across all characters and count toward the titles and rewards from reaching higher ranks.

| Wizardry Online launch delayed until Jan 30th Posted: 15 Jan 2013 12:00 PM PST Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Launches, Free-to-play, Wizardry Online If you had plans to skip work tomorrow to play on Wizardry Online's launch day, you should probably go ahead and earn a paycheck instead. SOE announced that it's moving the release date for the hardcore MMO from January 16th to January 30th.The delay of two weeks was a necessary step, according to the company: "As we head into final preparations for launching the game, we have decided to move the launch date in order to allow us extra time to ensure we're delivering the most epic gameplay experience possible to our players." Community Manager Piestro elaborated on the delay later in the announcement thread. "The transition from beta to live requires integrating with a good number of other systems. We are also planning to launch on Steam which complicates matters and requires other sorts of implementation work. Specifics aren't necessarily meaningful to those who aren't familiar with our internal systems, or particularly valuable. That being said, we aren't wasting this time and are definitely looking to see what else we can accomplish. More news later this week I'm suspecting."

| Flameseeker Chronicles: The game at the end of Guild Wars 2, revisited Posted: 15 Jan 2013 10:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Endgame, PvE, Opinion, Guild Wars 2, Flameseeker Chronicles, Dungeons I tend to dislike the term "endgame" because I suspect most people have scribbled out their own definition of the word and that anyone who dares to use it in reference to anything outside of that definition is summarily dismissed and excommunicated. I'm never quite sure what it is I'm being excommunicated from, mind you, but there's definitely a feeling of being suddenly, inexplicably, apart. Alien. Other. Anyway, I hope we can agree that endgame is what happens at the, well, end of the game -- after the game has been, in some way, finished. We all know that this is ludicrous, right? As long as you're playing the game, the game is not ended, and expecting that it will change substantially enough to be classified in a new way is kind of silly. But people persist in using the term, and they persist in differing over when, precisely, the endgame starts. Does it start when you've hit the game's level cap, if there is one? How about when you've finished the game's storyline, if it has one? You might've noticed that I'm kind of endgame agnostic. Regardless, let's go ahead and talk about Guild Wars 2's.
