Cute, sexy, disgusting fun with Skullgirls' M. Cartwright Posted: 28 Dec 2012 02:00 PM PST
Last week's Sup Holmes featuring lead animator on Skullgirls and Silent Hill/Scott Pilgrim/Lesbian Spider Queens from Mars illustrator Mariel Cartwright is now on iTunes and YouTube, which is a miracle. Mariel told me a few weeks before doing the show that she was shy, and had never done a video interview before. Honestly, that had me a bit worried. An hour-and-half-long live video interview isn't the easiest way to undo a phobia of appearing on camera. All my worries were in vain. Mariel was a charmer from beginning to end, dropping inside info on some potential plans for Skullgirls (with talk of tons of DLC characters), how she managed to score work on Silent Hill: Shattered Memories as her first job in the industry, what it was like having a Disney animator as a father, what she thinks of accusations that Skullgirls is sexist, and plenty of other moments of revelry. If the team at Lab Zero knows what's good for them, they'll ask Mariel to do more video interviews down the line. She's electric. Thanks again to Mariel for hanging out with us, and make sure to tune in this Sunday at 1pm PST/4pm EST when we welcome Gordon Midwood of Lilt Line and Derrick the Deathfin (a game you can win!) to the program. I'm worried about this episode too, so I'm sure it will be great.
The DTOID Show: Adam Sessler's 2013 Gaming Predictions Posted: 28 Dec 2012 12:30 PM PST
It's our last Destructoid Show episode of 2012, so filling in for Max today is Adam Sessler, whose name I am in no way ashamed to peddle so long as it drives views to this post! (Plus, who doesn't love a good predictions episode?) Today we break down our predictions, hopes, and gaming resolutions for the year 2013. We also discuss the addition of multiplayer to Tomb Raider, take a look at the new gameplay video for DMC: Devil May Cry, and try not to laugh at the OUYA's dev kit unboxing video. Last but not least, Team Deathmatch has officially been axed from Diablo III PvP in favor of something that doesn't suck.
Hotline Miami and game mechanics versus narrative Posted: 28 Dec 2012 12:00 PM PST
Have you played Hotline Miami yet? I hope so! For as much as I feel the satisfying gameplay is the primary draw, there are some interesting things going on with the story -- enough to allow for multiple interpretations of what the game is actually "about." Here's one such analysis, by Chris Franklin. Warning: there are spoilers throughout. While the over-the-top violence has perhaps taken the center stage of these discussions, Franklin offers an insightful examination of the hospital level and the contrast between the two playable characters and what they each represent in terms of game design. I played through Hotline Miami so quickly that I never stopped to think about these themes, but he brings up some interesting points I don't find myself disagreeing with. Worth a watch.
Ring in the New Year with Mega Man Christmas Carol Remix Posted: 28 Dec 2012 11:00 AM PST
Mega Man fans are in for one last treat in 2012 -- another Mega Man Christmas Carol fangame! After the first and second iterations, Sprites Inc. is back with a third title, which is a remixed version of the first one with the new engine. Christmas Carol Remix features five difficulty levels, three characters, new content, and achievements, all on top of a remastered version of the first Christmas Carol. Of course, sick holiday chiptunes make a welcome return. You can download it for free here -- just be aware that the creator is constantly tweaking the game with balance patches and bug fixes.
Knuckles rocks the spotlight in Archie Sonic #244 Posted: 28 Dec 2012 10:30 AM PST
Archie Sonic continues as we count down to the "When Worlds Collide" crossover event in April! Following last month's issue, Sonic the Hedgehog #244 begins with a confused Knuckles looking for whatever is left of his people in the Echidna city of Albion. As he searches the ruins, he discovers an incapacitated Sonic and crew, who were soundly beaten to a bloody pulp by Metal Knuckles. Meanwhile, the Warner Bros. legal hounds furiously bite the tips of their pens as Thrash the Tasmania Devil graces comic pages once more. Sonic #244 ought to be in subscribers hands' now, but stores won't be stocking copies until January 2. Check out some sample pages below. As an added bonus, Archie has also sent me the variant cover of April's Sonic Universe #51, featuring Proto Man and Knuckles. This cover marks part two of the "When Worlds Collide" arc, while the Bass / Shadow cover I shared the other week marks part three.
See the OUYA developer console unboxed, disassembled Posted: 28 Dec 2012 10:00 AM PST
Despite not normally being too into unboxing videos, I'll admit, I was eager to see what the OUYA dev kits looked like. A work in progress, this early model is being sent out now to those developers who ordered one. I'm having flashbacks to the days when translucent controllers were commonplace. The main highlight is the size of the unit, which is said to be about as small as a Rubik's Cube. We've seen the renders, but yeah -- this thing is tiny. Stick around to the end of the video to see the OUYA disassembled. Check out that adorable fan!

Tomba! 2 could be coming to PSN soon Posted: 28 Dec 2012 08:45 AM PST
MonkeyPaw Games tells us that they're currently in talks with SCEA to bring Tomba! 2 to the PlayStation Network. They're looking at a direct port that they hope will be PS Vita ready on day one. That would be nice! I'm guessing we'll see it soon, and here's why: Gamers in the U.S. got Tomba! as a PSOne release this past summer, but Europe was left hanging. That's not the case anymore as both Tomba! and Tomba! 2 have been released on the European PSN. They got lost in the holiday shuffle, but now they're up for our European readers, priced at £6.99 / €7.99. Both are Vita-ready. In related news, MonkeyPaw says that Class of Heroes II has been dlayed until next year, as Gaijinworks is tweaking the UI and other features. A new release date will come shortly. Check Gaijinworks' webpage for updates.

Promoted blog: Let us solve a Metal Gears!? Posted: 28 Dec 2012 07:30 AM PST
[Dtoid community blogger Bory Borham goes way deep into the Metal Gear Solid universe with this write-up, and maybe even uncovers some secrets concerning the series' next iteration! Fascinating stuff! Oh, and be sure to check out Part 2 in our Community Blogs once you're done with this one! --Mr Andy Dixon] Before we get started here, let me say that you are now entering spoiler city. If you haven't played every Metal Gear game and you don't want to be spoiled absolutely rotten, turn back now. Hell, depending on your definition of a spoiler, we may even learn more about Metal Gear Solid V than you are comfortable with. So yep... you've been warned. Before we start, make sure you've watched the trailer for Ground Zeroes. But wait a minute... MGSV!? When did we start using Roman numerals? And Ground Zeroes... like more than one zero? We'll get back to all of that later. Anyway, enter our Mystery Man. He's a tall man, but his face is intentionally hidden from our view. When we eventually get glimpses of his face, it's all burnt up. If he's a new character in the Metal Gear universe, why bother hiding his face in the first place? Right? He is likely somebody we have already seen before. Cue Tall, Dark, and Handsome (aka the Mystery Man): Perhaps Ground Zeroes sees the AI Network start to become aware? Maybe JD needs more testing? The ever-growing power of this AI Network would surely put Zero at unease, if it didn't obey him. Is Zero the Vanzetti to Big Bosses Sacco? Are they both in urgent danger? Is the AI Network's first priority to clear away the Patriots, just like the Patriots' first priority was to clear away the Philosophers? History does always repeat itself in the Metal Gear world. Or do you think Zero himself is still in control and launching Big Boss into infamy to be hunted like a dog? My money is on Zero not being such a bad guy after all, but that's just me. What do you think?
Retro City Rampage comes to XBLA on January 2 Posted: 28 Dec 2012 07:00 AM PST
Retro City Rampage will be flying onto WiiWare some time in January, but the XBLA version has a much more definite launch date. Direct from creator Brian Provinciano himself, you will be able to download the XBLA port of the pixel-tastic open world carnival on Wednesday, January 2. The extra dev time brings it up to speed right out of the gate with the patched builds currently on PSN and PC. The announcement history of this game has been super weird. It was originally announced for WiiWare as well as "undisclosed consoles." Then the XBLA version was revealed and scheduled to be the first responder on the scene. Then the PSN versions busted in and cut to the front of the line. How strange is it that the later a platform was unveiled, the closer to release its version of RCR wound up being? Stranger things have happened.
Yoshi is the world's greatest dad Posted: 28 Dec 2012 06:30 AM PST
My favorite track off brentalfloss' Bits of Me is definitely "Baby Mario & Papa Yoshi," a ragtime arrangement of Yoshi's Island's "Athletic." In the song, Yoshi decides to take care of the future Mushroom Kingdom hero instead of eating him. However, the music video, animated by Sean DePew, goes a step further and suggests that Yoshi served as Mario's adoptive father right up through adulthood. And how does Mario repay this love and generosity down the road? By dropping Yoshi in a pit just so he could reach a higher platform. What an ungrateful brat. First episode of The Walking Dead free on Xbox Live Posted: 28 Dec 2012 06:00 AM PST
The daily deals this month on Xbox Live have been hit or miss, but this one most certainly falls into the former category. Episode one of The Walking Dead can be downloaded for free on Xbox 360 until December 31, and if you like what you play, the remaining four episodes are 200 Microsoft Points a piece today only. That's $10 in total for the entire run, which took our Game of the Year as well as the Jimquisition's. If you haven't already snagged The Walking Dead on another platform, highly consider seeing what the fuss is about by partaking in this excellent deal.
Tomb Raider will indeed have multiplayer Posted: 28 Dec 2012 05:30 AM PST
Due out tomorrow for subscribers and on newsstands January 8, issue #145 of OXM has the big reveal of multiplayer in Tomb Raider. Little is known about what this will entail, though this component is being developed by Eidos Montreal, not Crystal Dynamics. On the game's official blog, the latter studio writes: "Inspired by the overwhelmingly positive response to co-op play in Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, we'll have many more details about Tomb Raider's multiplayer offering come CES in early January." I know some of you are by and large over multiplayer in previously single-player games, and I am too, but I'll want to see if they're doing anything new here before writing it off. More recently, the Assassin's Creed series ended up being a pleasant surprise. I'd love to see something that hasn't been done countless times already.
Awesome animated recreation of Zelda 1 boss battle Posted: 28 Dec 2012 04:30 AM PST
I'm surprised I haven't been paying all that much attention to Read Only Memory, an animated collaboration between Shamoozal and GoNintendo that has been running since July 2010. Shame on me, because this stuff is great! Basically, they are sub-minute-long shorts that recreate memorable scenes from Nintendo games or explore other elements of Nintendo culture. The latest episode above, which caps off the second season of the show, adapts Link's battle with Aquamentus, the boss of the first dungeon in the original Zelda. They're short and charming, and you ought to give 'em all a view. Go Shamoozal's site to catch up on all the previous episodes, and be sure to follow Shamoozal on Facebook.
