Check out several sites and companies' Christmas cards Posted: 25 Dec 2012 11:00 AM PST
Every year, game companies and other game sites like to send out holiday cards to their various contacts -- not that out of the ordinary. Sometimes these cards are your basic season's greetings, but other times they go above and beyond, with wonderful art and other clever flourishes. I'd like to share a few such cards in the gallery below. LEVEL-5 contributes a photo of a Ni no Kuni-themed cake and signatures from various staffers including CEO Akihiro Hino. Awesomenauts' Ronimo Games provides a twisted number by the game's artist, Gijs Hermans. Metroid fan site and Harmony of a Hunter album distributor Shinesparkers offers not one, not two, but three different cards. And finally, Roger Barr and Team Bobo prove once again that Abobo is every holiday icon rolled into one. This post was a fairly last-minute thing, so I regret that I wasn't able to gather a larger collection. Regardless, I hope you had a great Christmas! |

Uh, what? Wii U GamePads are also region locked [Update] Posted: 25 Dec 2012 05:00 AM PST
[Update: The Japanese message above reads, "The update cannot be completed with an overseas Wii U GamePad." In other words, it seems that you can use an imported GamePad to play games, you simply can't apply firmware updates without the original. Apparently, GamePads have their own firmware that is unique per region, hence this uncommon hurdle.] Apparently region locking the console wasn't enough: Rocket News has learned that Nintendo has gone a step further and region locked the actual GamePads as well. In reality, unless you have a lot of relatives visiting from out of the country, bringing in their GamePads for a console that currently only supports one GamePad, I don't see this being an issue. If Nintendo ever ends up updating the Wii U to support two GamePads though, it's something to be aware of if you're traveling. Either way it's an odd find, and I'd be interested in hearing a justification for it. Wii U GamePad [Rocket News via GoNintendo] |
Merry Christmas from Dtoid: now what'd you get? Posted: 25 Dec 2012 04:00 AM PST
Today is Christmas Day, the day we celebrate America's favorite lover, Cool Christmas, bedding beautiful women around the nation and refusing to pay child support. Cool Christmas says condoms are a scam. Just listen to him. He's cool. Cool Christmas. Of course, the main reason for the season is getting scads of free loot, so tell us what the BLOODY HECK you got, why don't you? Also, check out below to find out what the Destructoid creative family received, in all their wonder and glory. Merry Christmas, boys and girls! Chris Carter: Resident Evil Archives Volumes 1 and 2, Koopa Troopa stuffed animal, and my wife got a Hello Kitty X Street Fighter book that's totally awesome. Tony Ponce: I didn't get any game-related stuff from my family, but I did get a pretty pimp night robe. I bought myself some gifts recently though, like, uhhhh, back issues of Nintendo Power. And my Dtoid Secret Santa (Max) sent me 8-bit sunglasses and a DuckTales / Darkwing Duck crossover graphic novel co-written by Warren Spector. Josh Tolentino: Pajamas! Christmas is about giving, so rather than talking about what I got (Pajamas), I gave my 13 year-old nephew a sweet 3-game combo of Mass Effect Trilogy, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and Modern Warfare 3 (with an OK from his parents, of course). Best yet, I also secured a promise from his non-gamer father (the extent of his gaming experience is FIFA to give Journey a try. Fingers crossed! Patrick Hancock: Virtue's Last Reward and XCOM on the gaming front. Oh, and a little game called Shining Force III for Sega Saturn! Booya! And a motherflipping SUPERBALL!!!! already bounced it in the street as hard as I could. Also I am 7. Jonathan Holmes: I got the latest Adventure Time DVD. It's called Jake Vs. Memow. It comes with a hat that I haven't taken off since. I also got The Jerk starring Steve Martin. I know most of the lines to both that TV show and that movie by heart, but it's nice to have them around, particularly so that I can let other people borrow the. I can't believe how many people have never seen The Jerk. For games, I got Persona 4: Arena, Kirby's Epic Yarn, and Journey: Collector's Edition. I'm particularly excited to play the games on the Collector's Edition that haven't been released elsewhere. I heard they were great. I also bought myself DreamMix TV World Fighters, a Japanese Smash Bros. clone that features Solid Snake, Megatron, Simon Belmont, the wolfman from Bloody Roar, and many others. That ought to be good. Jim Sterling: Got some neat stuff from the wife off my babyish Amazon wishlist, chiefly a big ol' Terminator endoskeleton figure and a NECA Left 4 Dead Smoker figure. Also, Return of the Living Dead on Blu-ray, because yes! Oh, and some 3D glasses for the new TV at last. Can't wait for fifteen minutes of 3D Dynasty Warriors followed by an hour of headaches! Big thanks to Podtoid/Jimquisition fans who were also lovely enough to send me a Harley Quinn Arkham City figure, and Sealab 2012 on DVD, as well as Mat Jones for buzzing along season one of The Venture Bros. Jonathan Ross: I got a shirt from Banana Republic. Kyle MacGregor: Set of oil paints and 999. Darren Nakamura: My wife and I got each other a Nexus 7. Been playing Jetpack Joyride on it. Allistair Pinsof: I got some clothes from Uniqlo (for Dale North cosplay on the weekend), kitchen gadgets, Need for Speed Most Wanted (PC), and a Nexus 7. This is my first time seeing our site on a tablet and it is boo-tee-full! Merry Chrimbus, everyone! Mxyzptlk: I got a nexus 10 (which I got early so I've been already using it the last couple of weeks) and a Batman hoodie. Also my brother and his girlfriend bought my MAGfest pass for me. Niero: Drunk. Dale: Happy Corgi Christmas! I got a Staub Cocotte with a little piggy on top -- I love it. Candy? For sure. I'm already fatter. Oh, and corgi magnets and a corgi pillow. Bigger gifts include A 70" Sharp TV and Definite Technology 8060 speakers. I'm spoiled! |
Xbox Live discounts Rock of Ages and more today Posted: 25 Dec 2012 03:00 AM PST
Xbox Live's "Countdown to 2013" continues, and another round of deals is ready to go today on this glorious Christmas morning. Hydro Thunder is now 400 MSP (normally 1200), Rock of Ages is 200 MSP, Mini Ninjas Adventures is 400, Leedmees is going for 200, and Fruit Ninja Kinect is discounted to 400 MSP (with DLC reduced to 80). As for recommendations, if you're a huge fan of Hydro Thunder, you really can't go wrong, but just keep in mind that some of your enjoyment is probably going to be nostalgia based. Rock of Ages and Fruit Ninja Kinect however, I can outright recommend, as I heartily enjoyed both of them. Daily Deal [Major Nelson] |
Far Cry 3 patch optionally removes most of the HUD Posted: 25 Dec 2012 02:00 AM PST
If you were clamoring for a less intrusive HUD for Far Cry 3, you can have it: if you're a PC owner that is. Just download the latest patch, go to the options menu, and look for the new HUD toggle options under "Gameplay." Currently there's no word on a timetable for the console version of the game, but I can't imagine too much of a holdup. Considering that this same 1.04 update fixes a number of glitches as well, Ubisoft would probably want this out sooner than later. I'm personally excited for this patch, because like the Elder Scrolls series, I love running around with a minimalistic HUD, forging my own stories. It would be nice if all open world games shipped with this feature, but I'll take a patch any day. |
Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z development consoles detailed Posted: 24 Dec 2012 11:00 PM PST
Remember Ninja Gaiden Z?That weird spinoff game where the chief goal is to kill the franchise hero Ryu Hayabusa? Although details on planned platforms have been scarce, leading some to believe it was a next-gen project, it seems as if the game is slated for the 360 and PS3. based on a job posting by co-developer Spark Unlimited. If there really are no plans for a Wii U release, it would be pretty disappointing if Tecmo Koei already dropped support following the launch port of Ninja Gaiden 3. Whatever the case may be though, I hope it honors the new 3D franchise and kicks the difficulty up a notch. Current job listings [Spark Unlimited] |
The Daily Hotness: Santa Destructoid is on his way! Posted: 24 Dec 2012 03:59 PM PST
I hope you've been good this year, because I heard it through the grapevine that Santa Destructoid should be hitting your home very shortly. What'd you ask from him this year? Things were slow around these parts today, but we heard Retro City Rampage is coming to WiiWare in January, Grand Theft Auto V has screenshots with sharks in them, and PSN is having huge winter sale shenanigans.
