The Game Archaeologist's top MMO stories of 2012 Posted: 29 Dec 2012 09:00 AM PST Filed under: World of Warcraft, Anarchy Online, Asheron's Call, City of Heroes, EverQuest, Final Fantasy XI, Meridian 59, Culture, MMO industry, Ultima Online, Vanguard, Shadowbane, Everquest Online Adventures, The Game Archaeologist, Miscellaneous As another gaming year spins to a close, we here at the Institute for Digital Interactive Entertainment have been holding our archaeological department hostage with a trained buffy-tufted marmoset until it delivered a final report. After hours of begging and infected monkey bites, the head of that department, Prof. Justin Olivetti, Ph.D., handed us a scrap of urine-soaked paper with the following article inscribed. While the Institute strongly suggests that you ignore this report and instead work on your button-mashing exercises, the board of directors stated that all such papers must be posted for the public to see. This report is presented in the Yetbari typeface and contains a sequential series of items that number between 11 and 13. XL teases fans with another impressive ArcheAge trailer Posted: 29 Dec 2012 08:00 AM PST Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Trailers, Video, Game mechanics, MMO industry, New titles, News items, ArcheAge, Sandbox Ready for a new ArcheAge trailer? XLGAMES is in a coy mood, and the four-minute clip is a doozy that shows off everything from crafting and gathering to a giant kraken beast to some sort of player wedding. There are also glimpses of the game's crime and punishment system as well as the typically scrumptious shots of sailing ships and underwater exploration. ArcheAge creator Jake Song starts the clip off with a brief introductory spiel, and if any of you fine commenters are fluent in Korean, we'd love to know what he says! WRUP: Will you marry me, vicious leopard living outside of my house edition Posted: 29 Dec 2012 07:00 AM PST Filed under: Massively Meta, Miscellaneous Leopard, we've had a really strange relationship. I can remember how it started like it was yesterday, mostly because it was. You escaped from the zoo, I tried to get to my car, you nearly gnawed my leg off... at the time, I didn't think anything of it aside from "I need someone to help me; there is a leopard in my yard." But now, as I see you pacing the front lawn licking your chops at the thought of devouring me, I realize that we're meant to be together as a man and a savage jungle cat looking to consume that man for sustenance. So, vicious leopard living outside of my house: Will you marry me? Roar once for yes and twice for yes two times. This week's installment of WRUP is past the cut, complete with our plans for the weekend and the opportunity for you to sound off on your plans in the comments. Be sure to tune in for next week's installment, in which I recover from multiple leopard-induced lacerations and ask to spend some time away from the murderous cat-beast. The Daily Grind: When should character progression carry over? Posted: 29 Dec 2012 05:00 AM PST Filed under: Betas, Culture, Opinion, The Daily Grind, Miscellaneous Age of Wushu is still in testing right now, but that doesn't mean that your play right now doesn't count. Character progression is carrying over, and what you do from this point onward will matter. The game isn't alone, either; Final Fantasy XIV will be carrying over character data from open beta, and other free-to-play titles have kept characters around for the launch environment. If the beta is just a launch without any pricing, that's fine. (If it's persistent and you're being charged, that's not a beta; that's launch.) But Age of Wushu still has a fair bit more testing to go through, some of which could result in some rebalancing or changes. It's all normal stuff for testing, but knowing that what you do during this test will carry over means that you have to base long-term decisions on systems and elements that might change in the near future. Of course, "betas" are increasingly less concernned with development and more concerned with early play. So what do you think? When should character progression carry over to the launch version? Mid-beta? Early beta? Open beta? At launch and not a day before? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! Betawatch: December 22 - 29, 2012 Posted: 28 Dec 2012 05:00 PM PST Filed under: Betas, MMO industry, News items, Betawatch, Miscellaneous Are you ready for Origins of Malu? The developers of the sandbox certainly hope so, as the game's beta dates are being announced next week. That's not the only good news for fans of sandboxes over the past week, as Age of Wushu's developers responded swiftly to player outrage at some unexpectedly truncated purchaser benefits. They didn't restore the items lost by some players who deleted characters without realizing that benefits were being deleted as well, but it's something.Elsewhere in the world, The War Z is facing a potential name change (although it's being fought), and both Ragnarok Online 2 and Power Rangers Online have gone to open testing. But if you're more focused on big names, you can look forward to the beta schedule for Final Fantasy XIV, which has been spelled out in great detail by the developers and will be kicking off early next year. Need more beta goodness? Check out everything you could want to know just past the break with our full list, and if you see anything we missed, let us know in the comments! Tweeria is self-proclaimed 'laziest MMORPG ever' Posted: 28 Dec 2012 01:00 PM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Culture, New titles, Free-to-play, Browser, Casual If you like the idea of MMOs but don't want to actually have to do anything to progress in one, then Tweeria may be the answer to your weirdly specific situation. The game, such as it is, draws from your Twitter account to create a character and go on missions. Players go on raids, engage in PvP, loot, and level up based on everyday tweets.According to the game's developers, Tweeria's proven to be pretty popular, with over 14,000 registered users. The application reads your tweets, sees who you follow on Twitter, updates your profile, and posts tweets for you over the course of the game. The game's blog said that Tweeria began as a "private, non-commercial, and mostly experimental project," and was not prepared for the current level of popularity. There are some issues with player-submitted artwork and possible copyright violations that Tweeria's creators are trying to smooth over with future policies. City of Heroes fan videos pay tribute to the game's legacy Posted: 28 Dec 2012 11:00 AM PST Filed under: Sci-fi, Video, City of Heroes, Culture, Free-to-play The game may be cold and gone at this point, but City of Heroes still lives in the warm, beating hearts of its fans. Two players endeavored to create tributes to the game that would endure long past its expiration date, and Massively thinks they should be shared with the larger community. The first video, City of Heroes Remains, sees Paragon City being pummeled into the ground by a fiery meteor shower, only to be rebuilt by its heroes after the event. It's a movie-quality production full of special effects and stunning views of the city, set to a couple of perfect songs. The second video, Memories, is a longer, quieter look at the end. In it, a costumed crusader pays a final visit to City Hall where he hangs up his tights for good -- but refuses to let go of a backpack full of memories. We've got both videos for you after the jump, but be warned: You may need hankies.
