| The Nexus Telegraph: WildStar style Posted: 24 Dec 2012 09:00 AM PST Filed under: Sci-fi, Opinion, WildStar, The Nexus Telegraph There's no two ways about it: The way that WildStar looks is just plain going to turn some people off. And while I'm hesitant to say those people are wrong, exactly, I think they're missing the mark something fierce. When the game's first trailer hit, the look was what immediately attracted me to the game. Not that it had a whole lot of competition; back then, we knew the name, we'd seen a couple of vague concepts, and we had a wonderfully animated trailer. Picking the last item out of those three was almost just choosing the more substantial option. But I won't lie -- I loved the visual style, and when it became clear that the game was bearing that out all the way along, that just made me pleased as could be. Some aren't as fond of it, that's for sure. But I can think of some good reasons for the game to look how it does and at least one major flaw in the arguments against the look. I might be wrong, but heck, I'd be doing a disservice not to speak my mind on the subject. Continue reading The Nexus Telegraph: WildStar style

| The War Z's trademark suspended, name change likely Posted: 24 Dec 2012 08:00 AM PST Filed under: Betas, Horror, MMO industry, New titles, News items, Legal The decision comes on the heels of The War Z being pulled from Steam, as well as a bevy of fraud accusations from the game's disgruntled userbase. | Snail addresses Age of Wushu brouhaha, Elite mounts to stay Posted: 24 Dec 2012 07:30 AM PST Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Business models, MMO industry, New titles, PvP, News items, Free-to-play, Sandbox, Age of Wushu Yesterday we reported on a significant brouhaha in the Age of Wushu pre-release community. Snail Games has since posted a lengthy message on its forums in response. There were two major points of contention from a customer perspective. First was the removal of a permanent mount from AoW Elite packages. "We will be giving all Elite package members the permanent mount that we promised," the company says. "In fact, it should be sent to all Elite package accounts by the time you read this."The other major issue stemmed from the fact that Elite edition customers didn't know that their pre-order bonus items were only good for the first character on the account. Snail says that, as of now at least, that restriction will remain due to technical issues. Age of Wushu was never made for players to have more than one character or for players to delete the character they decided to make. We had brought it up before and did not (at the time) see the need in specifying that if you get the items on a character and delete that character, those items are gone.[Thanks to Adam for the tip!]

| The Stream Team: Peace on Earth edition, December 24 - 30, 2012 Posted: 24 Dec 2012 07:00 AM PST Filed under: Polls, Massively Meta, Livestream, Miscellaneous, The Stream Team I don't know about you, but I am pretty glad the world didn't end, either by a butterfly flapping its wings or by World of Warcraft shutting down (your top two votes!). Despite all the troubles in it, I'm still pretty fond of this place. After all, this is where the MMOs are! And Massively TV. Of course, there are many other reasons, not the least of which is this very special time of year.On that note, The Stream Team wishes you all a wonderful holiday season. May your homes and lives be filled with peace, happiness, and lightning-fast internet! Oh, and also the sound of this week's streams... | The Daily Grind: Can you overlook a bad UI? Posted: 24 Dec 2012 05:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Game mechanics, MMO industry, New titles, Opinion, Free-to-play, The Daily Grind, Age of Wushu So I've been playing Age of Wushu pretty heavily despite its not-ready-for-prime-time translation and its hackneyed interface. To be fair, it is still beta, and the martial arts sandbox isn't officially slated to launch in America until February. That said, character progression is carrying over and I'm paying for a VIP account, so I view it as more of a pre-release thing than a beta thing, personally. And I've heard a lot of players complaining about the UI. It's complicated, you can't move it around or customize it, and it's generally the antithesis of the streamlined interfaces we've seen in polished themeparks over the past few years. All of that hasn't put a damper on the novel game mechanics, though, and in spite of the fact that I wish the game would get a full UI makeover, I'll probably be playing it well past launch. What about you, Christmas Eve crew? Is a bad UI a dealbreaker when it comes to your MMO enjoyment, or can you overlook it as long as the rest of the game is good?

| Age of Wushu removes Elite benefits unexpectedly Posted: 23 Dec 2012 04:00 PM PST Filed under: Historical, Business models, Game mechanics, News items, Free-to-play, Promotions, Sandbox, Age of Wushu So, enjoying Age of Wushu? Enough to purchase the game's Elite package with all its attendant benefits before launch? That's great, but if you bought it on the premise of having a permanent mount, you're going to be sadly disappointed. Snail Games USA has announced that the unlimited mount previously announced for purchasers has been removed, replaced by an increased quantity of gold and a few temporary mounts. While it's an understandable balance concern, it's also somewhat upsetting for players who have already purchased the package partly on this basis. This comes in the wake of another announcement by the company clarifying that Elite/Deluxe edition rewards are only given to the first character you create. Deleting and remaking your character will not result in your rewards being resent. This has further angered several players, as this statement was not made until after many players had begun recreating characters without prior knowledge of this policy. The post announcing that these items are one-time-only explains the philosophy behind it, and encourages all players to do ample research before creating a first character for this exact reason. | EVE Evolved: Baiting players is hilarious fun! Posted: 23 Dec 2012 03:00 PM PST Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Culture, Expansions, Game mechanics, Professions, PvP, Endgame, Opinion, EVE Evolved, Guides, Sandbox I originally planned to put together updated ship setups for EVE Online's newly revamped Caldari, Minmatar, and Amarr Tech 1 cruisers this week, but I've honestly been having far too much fun baiting people in highsec with last week's Vexor setup. I'm having such hilarious fun doing it that I just had to dedicate this week's column to the dirty art of the bait-and-gank! There's absolutely nothing more amusing in EVE than baiting a ship twice the size of yours into attacking you for an "easy kill" and then turning it into a very expensive smoking wreck. The basic idea of baiting is simple: Get yourself flagged as a suspect by committing a minor crime like theft, fly around waiting for someone to attack you, and then tear him to bits. Before Retribution, you were flagged as a valid target only to the individual people you stole from, but once they attacked, you were safe to engage. Now you're flagged to the whole of EVE, making it easier to get a bite but also a whole lot riskier to engage in a crowded area. It's hard to pick and choose your fights when the whole universe is gunning for you, but when you get a good bite, there are some insanely fun fights to be had. In this week's EVE Evolved, I give some top tips on how to safely bait players in high-security space, where to find the best targets, and what ships are most effective. | Mark Jacobs' City State Entertainment releases some sort of teaser Posted: 23 Dec 2012 11:00 AM PST Filed under: Trailers, Video, MMO industry, New titles, News items What's Mark Jacobs been up to lately? Conspiring with fellow devs at City State Entertainment, that's what. The team is made up of ex-staffers from Mythic (which Jacobs co-founded) and Troika, and they've just released an extremely brief teaser clip to whet our appetites for... whatever it is they're making.About the only thing we can say regarding the teaser is that it features a trinity motif, which might follow along from the three-faction PvP from Jacobs' celebrated Dark Age of Camelot MMO. See for yourself after the cut. [Thanks to Heath and Matthew for the tips!] Continue reading Mark Jacobs' City State Entertainment releases some sort of teaser

| Rise and Shiny: Goodgame Empire Posted: 23 Dec 2012 09:00 AM PST Filed under: Screenshots, Video, Business models, Game mechanics, PvP, Opinion, War, Free-to-play, Browser, Casual, MMORTS, Rise and Shiny, Livestream Goodgame Empire, by Goodgame Studios (makes sense, huh?) is a pretty casual MMORTS that sports some nice art, tempting cash-shop items, and the accessibility that still comes with Flash-based MMOs. Despite the beating that Adobe's baby took over the last year, Flash-based games do still offer some great benefits. Primarily it's the ability to play a Flash-based game from almost any configuration of PC that makes it worth it, but that's a delicate line to toe. Often Flash-based MMOs have issues and crash browsers. I had no such issues with Goodgame Empire, but that's probably due to the lack of intense, real-time animations. The game looks great. I love stylized games, and love it when all of the art within a game fits together. Many Flash games look fantastic; Goodgame Empire does too. All of the tiny units, map icons, and bits of UI match each other and look fun. But great art does not save the game from suffering from some common MMORTS blues.
