Frog Fractions: The most interesting game I played today

Frog Fractions: The most interesting game I played today screenshot

Jonathan Ross sent me the link to Frog Fractions this morning. I didn't give it enough time at first, believing it to be some weird browser-based educational game. Then I saw it brought up on Twitter and quickly realized there was much more going on here.

To say as little as possible while still piquing your interest, I'll quickly note that I'm in the text adventure section right now. Jeez, I suck at interactive fiction. You might have heard a thing or two when word spread among gaming blogs in the last few weeks, but we'd rather be late than never show up at all. Hopefully Frog Fractions is new to most of you.

It's the game that keeps on giving. You owe it to yourself to play.

Hotline Miami devs reveal new game plans on Sup Holmes

Hotline Miami devs reveal new game plans on Sup Holmes screenshot

Last Sunday on Sup, Holmes (full podcast version available now!), two men drank boxed wine and talked to me about making videogames. Those two men were Dennis Wedin and Jonatan Soderstrom of Dennaton Games, the creators of Keyboard Drumset F*cking Werewolf and Hotline Miami. As the night went on and the alcohol began to flow, I witnessed some nocturnal admissions that still delight me to this day.

Probably the biggest admission was that Dennaton's got a few new concepts for their next project, and that one of them is a 2D action platformer. Their plans are far from final, but Dennis has already started on the artwork, which was exciting news in and of itself. It sounds like Jonatan is really focused on making sure the game isn't gimmicky (like so many other indie-budgeted platformers) but is still unique from a design perspective. If Hotline Miami is an example of what these guys do with an arcade-style action/maze game as a skeleton, I can't wait to see what they do with Contra as a template.

Thanks again to Jonatan and Dennis for being on the show, and tune in this Sunday at 1pm PST/4pm EST for more Sup, Holmes magic. We've got James Montagna from WayForward on the show to talk about his work on the new Adventure Time and Shantae titles. Should be a hoot!

The DTOID Show: GTA V, Elder Scrolls Online & Navy SEALs

Here's today's action-packed Destructoid Show!

Bethesda has released a big ol' video about The Elder Scrolls Online, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is allowing the internet teenagers to livestream their online gun-shooting right from their gaming system of choice, Silicon Knights is being forced to destroy all their Unreal Engine 3 games, and some Navy SEALs got in trouble for working on Medal of Honor: Warfighter.

The big news? Well, the cat's out of the bag about Grand Theft Auto V, and it sounds awesome.

SmileGate developing Marvel MOBA for Asia

You're already dreaming up the possibilities, aren't you?

A multiplayer online battle arena game centered around Marvel characters sounds too good to be true -- and perhaps it is -- but it's happening. Disney Interactive has tasked Korean developer SmileGate with the project which is looking at a 2014 release in Asia, reports MMO Culture.

Project PK, as it's known currently, could presumably see a worldwide release under the right conditions. One would think there'd be considerable interest in such a game, anyway.

The Network Roundup: The wonders of the cosmos

Today celebrated the birthday of famous astrophysicist, astronomer, and cosmologist, Carl Sagan. To me, he will forever be the guy that could make anything sound amazing, and our world feel so small. There have been many who have tried, but there'll never be someone who could communicate the wonders of space and science quite like the late, great, Carl Sagan.

We may not be crossing the universe, but there were some great things going across the network. From the amazing figures from Miyazawa Model show, to Wii U wonders, this muddy ball we call Earth can still be interesting.

Did you hear Xbox 360 USB storage was upped to 32 GB?

Did you hear Xbox 360 USB storage was upped to 32 GB? screenshot

Even though the latest Xbox 360 dashboard update was pushed last month, Microsoft didn't really feel the need to let everyone know that they doubled the USB storage limit from 16 GB to 32 GB. Apparently this was known (I myself had no idea, despite participating in the beta for said update), but Joystiq received confirmation today from Microsoft that this is a feature here to stay. This is what they had to say:

Yes. The more our customers use their profile and download digital content, the larger the file size necessary to store that content and move it between consoles gets. Therefore we increased the size of the memory to enable our customers to take more of their Xbox profile with them on the go.

So, there you go! If 32 GB isn't enough on-the-go storage for your needs, just remember all you have to do is download a sh*t ton of content and use your profile a lot to get Microsoft to double it again. But do you really need more than that?

New Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed Wii U vid out

New Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed Wii U vid out screenshot

We know that Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is coming out on more-or-less every platform this Holiday, but it appears that Sumo Digital has paid special attention to the Wii U version as shown in the racer's latest trailer released today.

Along with exclusive multiplayer modes, Racing Transformed on the Wii U will also allow players to switch screens from their TV to their gamepad seamlessly (if the video is portraying the switch accurately) and even control vehicles via the gamepad's motion control feature.

Although I've never really cared much for Sonic racing titles, Racing Transformed doesn't actually seem too bad; maybe the 10-player multiplayer mode will prove a hit among kart fans until the inevitable release of a Mario Kart U.

Worth-playing shmup Sine Mora out now on Steam

Worth-playing shmup Sine Mora out now on Steam screenshot

Digital Reality and Kalypso have released the gorgeous horizontal shoot-'em-up Sine Mora on Steam today for $9.99. There were certainly some of you who called for a PC version to happen, so here's hoping that wasn't just talk.

While I enjoyed my time with Sine Mora as someone who doesn't frequently play shmups, I didn't continue playing for much longer after completing the story. That said, the original $15 asking price of the Xbox Live Arcade edition still seemed worth it, in retrospect.

Beyond the obviously nice visuals, the story had some memorable moments that were worth experiencing. Neat game, overall! I'm glad to see it come to other platforms.

New batch of Earth Defense Forces 4 screens surface

New batch of Earth Defense Forces 4 screens surface screenshot

Siliconera posted a whole mess of new screenshots for Earth Defense Forces 4, showing off the Air Raiders, a sort of support class providing health and targeting benefits to teammates while using air strikes, automated turrets and mines to fight.

In addition, there are a few shots of a new Hector robot with guns on both arms.

Those Air Raiders sound like they'd be a lot of fun to play with, but I so often wind up playing EDF games alone that I doubt I would get a whole lot of use out of it. Something tells me a lone Air Raider wouldn't hold up too long.

Friday Night Fights

New to FNF? Read this! Each week, a bunch of us Dtoiders get together to play videogames online! It's a 100% community-run event, so feel free to join in or even host something yourself!

The planning for FNF starts in the forums, where community members sign up to host matches and post their pertinent details (game, time, Gamertag, etc.). Then, every Friday, reminder posts go up in the community blogs thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers, and I recap it all here on the front page to give it a bit more exposure.

To join in, simply send a friend request to the match host! If you'd rather host something yourself, sound off in the comments section below!

Still confused? Check out our FNF FAQ! Big thanks to Dtoider ChillyBilly for all these awesome headers!

BioWare asks for feedback in next Mass Effect installment

BioWare asks for feedback in next Mass Effect installment screenshot

Casey Hudson, Executive Producer on the Mass Effect series, took to Twitter last night to ask fans what they would like in the next Mass Effect title saying, "We're in early stages of designing a completely new Mass Effect game. What would you want to see in it?" No surprise here that the next entry is sort of officially announced.

The universe is so enormous that it was always expected to go beyond the initial first three games. Hopefully all the fan feedback very early on will help BioWare to avoid any future "controversy." Only time will tell. I myself have yet to finish Mass Effect 3, but I still get a say, right? What I want is the ability to play as a Turian, because humans are lame and boring. What would you guys want to see?

Halo 4 Spartan Ops Episode 2 gets a shiny new CGI trailer

Halo 4 Spartan Ops Episode 2 gets a shiny new CGI trailer screenshot

As Microsoft promised, we'll be getting free post-launch episodes for Halo 4's Spartan Ops in the coming weeks (maybe months?). Episode 2 is arriving this Monday, and to precede that we have some amazing CGI work. I have a funny story about that. When the opening cutscene for Halo 4 started, I really thought it was live-action. No shame.

Anyway, I couldn't honestly tell you what was going on in this trailer, as I'm only about an hour in Halo 4's solo campaign and haven't touched the co-op stuff yet. Apparently that weird artifact you found is taking control of systems on the UNSC Infinity, and you'll probably be heading back down to the planet to fix things. Yeah, I'm still clueless on what's going on.

Atlus and Level|Up hosting fighting game tournament

Atlus and Level|Up hosting fighting game tournament screenshot

If you're in or near Walnut, California the weekend of the 17th later this month, you can attend or participate in an Atlus fighting games tournament at Super Arcade being hosted by Level|Up in association with, of course, Atlus. The two games they will be bringing along are Persona 4 Arena and King of Fighters XIII.

Prizes will be given out to attendees, tournament winners, and those of you watching at home on the official Twitch stream. Grand prize winners will receive a custom-made arcade stick made by Mad Catz and customized by Atlus. Second and third place winners will receive Persona 4 Golden Solid Gold Premium Editions and regular editions, respectively. For full details on the event, head over to the official news post on Level|Up's blog.

Oh, and Persona 4 Arena is now up on the Xbox Games on Demand. So, if you still haven't picked it up, you definitely should. It's easily one of my favorite titles of the year.
