Saddle up! Wavy Tube Man Chronicles to hit Windows 8 Posted: 12 Nov 2012 02:30 PM PST
I have always enjoyed games that are a little out there in terms of its story, and who aren't afraid to break that fourth wall so hard that it leaves in shambles. That's why whenever I hear anything about an game from Twisted Pixel, my ears perk. Twisted Pixel has decided to take The Gunstringer's spin-off DLC, The Wavy Tube Man Chronicles and port it over to both Windows 8 and Windows RT platforms. That's right, you can get your Twisted Pixel fix on the go...so long as you have a Surface tablet. This Mad Dog McCree inspired rail shooter places you in the role of Wavy Tube Man Jr. on a mission to save his father from death's cold and marionetted fingers. On your mission through time, you will encounter a variety of enemies from no-good outlaws to warriors of the future; and all using Twisted Pixel's glorious "graphiz" technology. No word on a set release date for it on the Windows Store, but the price for this little slice of hilarity will be $1.49. It is still cheaper, and possibly more entertaining, than that Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford cowboy romp. |
Sequel to PC Mega Man clone Rosenkreuzstilette is out Posted: 12 Nov 2012 02:00 PM PST
Are you familiar with "doujin soft"? They're essentially Japanese indie games, and although most are of the fan game variety, major publishers tend to leave them alone. As it should be! Fan games aren't harming anybody! In 2007, the doujin group [erka:es] released Rosenkreuzstilette, a straight-up Mega Man clone with a European Gothic atmosphere. Instead of Robot Masters, you fight German witches, and instead of mechanical grunts, you battle ghosts and monsters of the Castlevania persuasion. At its core, you'll find familiar Mega Man level design and obstacles, but that's not a bad thing. The sequel, Rosenkreuzstilette Freudenstachel, finally released on October 20, and it's more girl-on-girl pew pew pew action as you'd expect. There are also several game references and cameos throughout, such as a level based on Super Mario Bros. and a mini-boss who looks like Sardius from Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts. Sounds like a blast to me! A digital copy of Rosenkreuzstilette Freudenstachel can be purchased here for ¥1365 ($17.19), and you can also buy the original here for ¥1260 ($15.84). In-game dialog is in Japanese, of course, but I've got a hunch that you'll be able to find your way around just fine. [via NeoGAF] |
Breach and build castles in Stronghold Kingdoms Posted: 12 Nov 2012 01:30 PM PST
The Stronghold series has a lot more downs than it has had ups, starting off strong in 2001 with the first in the series, and then going on to spawn quite a few sequels and spin offs that, for the most part, failed to impress. The last installment, Stronghold 3, was the worst of the bunch, as you can probably tell from the review we gave it. Now we have Stronghold Kingdoms, and on paper it sounds more than a bit off-putting. It deviates quite a bit from the standard formula, being both an MMORTS and a free-to-play title. However, two years of beta testing, and the solid core principle of building and defending sturdy castles makes it at least worthy of notice. The video might be bordering on awful, but somehow it still left me intrigued. You can check it out now on PC, or grab one of the premium boxed versions, if that's your thing. |
MSI reveals the newest G series gaming laptop, the GX60 Posted: 12 Nov 2012 01:00 PM PST
MSI is ready to release its newest gaming laptop, the GX60, on to the masses later this week and this one is packs a punch. Looking at the specs for this thing is just making me salivate a little. Powered by a AMD Trinity A10 Quad Core processor, this laptop also features an AMD Radeon HD 7970M GPU, which boasts stereoscopic 3D capabilities, as well allowing for multiple simultaneous displays. Pack in a Blu-ray reader, 1920x1080 anti-reflection screen and built-in Steel Series gaming keyboard and you have yourself one little beast of a gaming laptop. MSI has priced the GX60 at $1299.99, which isn't too bad considering all of its high quality components. That being said, building your own PC on a budget has never been easier. I've always been the type of person that if I can save a bit a money by going a different route, I will. But that is still a nice laptop. |
Get schooled on Guardians of Middle-earth's classes Posted: 12 Nov 2012 12:30 PM PST
Feast your eyes on this, the third episode of the Guardians of Middle-earth tutorial series. This one is all about the five Guardian classes in the multiplayer fantasy romp -- based on archetypes from the books -- and what happens once they get their arse handed to them. Nothing particularly interesting is revealed in the tutorial, let alone anything new or surprising. It's going to take a lot to get me to get off my PC and playing a MOBA on a console; certainly a lot more than attaching it to a popular literary IP. It's launching next month on Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network -- just in time for The Hobbit. |
The DTOID Show: Mass Effect 4, Source 2, & Adam Sessler Posted: 12 Nov 2012 12:15 PM PST
A new Mass Effect game is in the works, and the exciting part is that it's gonna be running Frostbite 2. Black Ops II comes out tomorrow, and it's got some rather fussy terms of service. Plus, Nuketown's now included with the season pass. Some kids from 4chan took a tour of Valve's headquarters and got confirmation that Source Engine 2 is being made, from Gabe Newell himself. The Tomb Raider collector's edition looks rather fancy, and hey, who's this new guy at Revision3? Why, it's ADAM SESSLER! |
Marvelous: 'Should Half-Minute Hero 2 come to the West?' Posted: 12 Nov 2012 12:00 PM PST
I had personally written off Half-Minute Hero 2 as something that simply wouldn't be available to me unless I decided to import. While we'll need to keep our expectations in check here, there is a chance the game could leave Japan. Marvelous Tweeted on the official Half Minute Hero account asking if HMH 2 should come to the West. There's a link to a one-question survey which says: "Half Minute Hero still has a ways to go before we can bring the sequel to our fans overseas. But, if the Time Goddess were to help us out a bit, how many of you would buy Half-Minute Hero 2: Yusha 30 Second on day one?" I think you know what to do. Be honest! NVIDIA updates GeForce drivers in time for Black Ops II Posted: 12 Nov 2012 11:45 AM PST
If you're gearing up to play Call of Duty: Black Ops II with one of those fancy GeForce GTX cards, there's one more thing you'll probably want to get out of the way ahead of that. NVIDIA has just released a driver update which could dramatically improve performance. The update should help with a bunch of other titles as well. NVIDIA mentions Assassin's Creed III, Skyrim, and Battlefield 3 among games titles which ought to run better with the patch. So, yeah, you might want to get on that if you plan to get your military kill on tonight. Midnight looms. Equip Your PC for Battle: Faster GeForce Drivers Arrive in Time for Call of Duty [NVIDIA] |
A look at Wii U exclusive features in NBA 2K13 Posted: 12 Nov 2012 11:30 AM PST
2K Sports released this new video showing some of the unique features players of the Wii U version of NBA 2K13 will be able to look forward to when it launches next week. Given special attention is the Gatorade Biometric Scanner, which displays player fatigue in a special view achieved by holding the Wii U GamePad up to the screen. It additionally features touch controls for issuing commands to players. It's a pretty good use of the GamePad, I'd say, and really shows how effective the device could be for players most interested in the management aspects of their sports sims. Way to go, 2K Sports Gatorade! |
Microsoft: No plans to bring Direct X 11.1 to Windows 7 Posted: 12 Nov 2012 11:00 AM PST
Since the worldwide release of Windows 8 back in October, an interesting question has popped up concerning the newest version of its 3D API: Will DirectX 11.1 be made available for Windows 7 users? The answer from Microsoft's Daniel Moth on the Visual Studio support forum was, "DirectX 11.1 is part of Windows 8, just like DirectX 11 was part of Windows 7...at this point there is no plan for DirectX 11.1 to be made available on Windows 7." This is no real surprise considering that Microsoft has done this before with its last API update, DirectX 11. During the initial launch of Windows 7, DirectX 11 was not available for any previous versions of Windows. Since then, Microsoft has made it available for some older versions of the OS. DirectX 11.1's major feature is the native support of stereoscopic 3D for games, a feature that previously was only available to you if you had the right graphics card. 3D gaming has never really interested me and if this is the best they can do for DirectX 11.1, I'm not going to be upgrading my OS any time soon. 'The Lost Shores' Guild Wars 2 event starts this week Posted: 12 Nov 2012 10:30 AM PST
It's another big month for Guild Wars 2 as ArenaNet prepares to kick off a one-time world event for the game dubbed "The Lost Shores." The official site offers a glimpse at this new storyline, which will begin at 12:00pm Pacific on November 16 and carry through the rest of the weekend. It seems there's a Karka (i.e., giant crab monster thing) invasion to be thwarted. Also new to the MMO are Fractals of the Mists mini-dungeons that become increasingly difficult as you push forward, a beta PvP map called Temple of the Silent Storm, "Lost Shores" items at the Black Lion Trading Company, and new ascended gear and infusions. Those of you who would like to get into Guild Wars 2 for the first time ought to find a friend who owns the game and proceed to bug them incessantly -- they'll have the opportunity to send out three invites for a free trial weekend starting on November 15 at 9:00am Pacific. |
Minecraft builds past 8 million sold mark Posted: 12 Nov 2012 10:00 AM PST
Markus "Notch" Persson has confirmed via Twitter that the PC version of Minecraft has passed the 8 million sold mark. "The PC version of Minecraft just passed 8 million sales!" Tweeted Notch. "My face is making grinning sounds, so I assume it's grinning!" I'm sure his grins sound like dollar bills rubbing together. Wadding together. His entire facial muscle structure is made up of currency fibers. 8 million is nuts for a game that dropped about this time last year. Congrats, Notch.

Thomas Was Alone now available on Steam Posted: 12 Nov 2012 09:00 AM PST
Mike Bithell's minimalist platformer, Thomas Was Alone, has just been released on Steam. Above, you can witness a new trailer for the title, featuring quotes from a number of respectable outlets (and this one) which praise pretty much everything about it. Rightly so. Thomas Was Alone is incredibly fun to play and I'm probably going to play it again now that it's up on Valve's service. That game is generally priced at $9.99, but you can save ten percent if you purchase during the game's introductory period. Go check it out! As for the trailer, well, I think I did it better. |
Crytek CEO talks about the next Crysis, moving to F2P Posted: 12 Nov 2012 08:30 AM PST
Ahead of the five-year anniversary of Crysis, Eurogamer spoke with Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli about the future of the franchise, where the studio is headed with free to play, piracy, and why they didn't make Far Cry 2. A few points of discussion were particularly interesting to me, though the full interview is worth reading. Previously, Yerli commented that Crytek was in the process of transitioning from packaged goods into an "entirely free-to-play experience." Is this still the case? "The truth is much more complicated," he told Eurogamer. "There's a transformation period for the industry. I believe free-to-play is our inevitable future. I believe there are F2P titles out there that can be story-telling, that can be co-operative with your friends and can be competitive with your friends." Continuing, he said that "the most important aspect is there is a psychological transformation of the customers and the publishers that has to happen before everything is F2P on every platform. We are promoting these steps with other titles we're doing right now in our company. Crysis, we do have a plan for a F2P version of Crysis, but how this looks and when this will be done, whether this is the next one or the other next one, is to be decided." Yerli put all of this in context, noting that "effectively Crysis 1 and 2 and 3 are just about breaking even." As for the next Crysis, "Normally in this time right now we would already have pre-production going on. But because we want to make this something much more radical and new we are looking at it as a bit more of a long term thing. It's too early to talk about it for these reasons." |
