New combat trailer demonstrates Mabinogi 2 Arena battles Posted: 05 Nov 2012 09:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Trailers, New titles, News items, Mabinogi, Vindictus Mabinogi 2 Arena, Nexon's recently revealed companion to Mabinogi and Vindictus (AKA Mabinogi Heroes in the east), takes a good fight and makes it the centerpiece of the game. Slated to launch later this year, the action MMO allows players to fight in arena combat as well as spectate others' matches. While a previous video showed off some character models and environments for the upcoming game, Nexon's latest official trailer gives folks a taste of the actual combat moves players can expect. The video shows off both 1v1 and one vs. many scenarios; various kicks, throws, slaps, and slices are exchanged between characters as well as inflicted upon nondescript practice dummies. Footage also demonstrates battle atop dinosaur-like and mechanical mounts, with the pet/mount dealing its own damage. Check out the action after the break. Crafting-focused sandbox Greed Monger launches Kickstarter campaign Posted: 05 Nov 2012 08:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Video, Game mechanics, MMO industry, New titles, News items, Free-to-play, Sandbox, Crafting, Housing Perhaps it's from Kickstarter gaining in popularity, but MMORPG addicts... er, fans... are seeing a surge in the number of indie games in development, especially sandboxes. And joining the crowd of crowd-funding is Greed Monger, a new title that heralds its primary focus as crafting.According to the Kickstarter page, Greed Monger is being developed for both PC and Mac. Other features include non-instanced housing, no global chat, a player-driven economy, no predefined skill trees, community events, and animals that only drop crafting materials. On top of that, every finished item that exists in game is player-crafted. The game will be free-to-play, with the team's future development funds coming from purchases of land parcels, not cash shop micro-transactions. Check out a basic demo video after the cut. For more details, as well as screenshots depicting housing and a video showing off a castle that the highest contributors can acquire, check out the game's campaign page. Star Citizen well ahead of crowd-funding schedule, stretch goals added Posted: 05 Nov 2012 07:00 AM PST Filed under: Sci-fi, Game mechanics, MMO industry, New titles, News items, Sandbox Chris Roberts' Star Citizen is one of the more successful gaming-related crowd-funding projects to date, and even though there's still two weeks left until the Kickstarter drive closes, the title has already exceeded its $2 million goal by almost $800,000.What's going to happen to that extra money, then? It's partly up to the game's community. The Star Citizen site boasts a new poll with additional stretch goals. Choices include more ships, star systems, NPCs, an enhanced FPS mode, Linux and Mac clients, and some sort of tactical command mode for capital ships. As of press time, new flyable ships and additional star systems were leading the vote. The Daily Grind: Do you use peripherals for MMOs? Posted: 05 Nov 2012 05:00 AM PST Filed under: Opinion, The Daily Grind, Miscellaneous I've got a few assorted input peripherals scattered about my PC gaming rig. There's a joystick and throttle setup, a G13, and some sort of G-something keyboard that has way more buttons than I actually use. Oh and there's one of those console-style PC controllers as well. While these gizmos come in handy for various single-player titles, few if any of them see much use when I play MMOs. I have used the keyboard's G-key macro functionality for those games where you simply never have enough hotbar space (looking at you Age of Conan and EverQuest 2), but that's about it. What about you, morning folk? Do you use peripherals for MMO gaming, and if so which ones and what for? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! Daybreak action MMO aims for global release Posted: 04 Nov 2012 06:00 PM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Trailers, Video, Business models, New titles, News items, Browser Chinese developer Linekong is bringing Daybreak to the global market. "That's great," you may say, "but what is Daybreak?" Daybreak is an action MMORPG to which players can connect either through a client or browser. The game currently has four classes, all gender-locked: the Knight, Hunter, Puppet Master, and Mage. Among other features are a handful of PvP modes, upgradeable mounts, pets that evolve, and bosses both in dungeons and the open world. Despite that action moniker, Daybreak currently doesn't allow players to attack while jumping or swing their weapons while running. A fatigue system for entering dungeons and other in-game systems is augmented by heavy emphasis on the cash shop, at least on the game's current Chinese server. Skip below the cut to check out some trailer and gameplay videos for yourself. MMO Week in Review: The Mouse House Posted: 04 Nov 2012 05:00 PM PST Filed under: Massively Meta, Week in Review, Miscellaneous At the end of every week, we round up the best and most popular news stories, exclusive features, and insightful columns published on Massively and then present them all in one convenient place. If you missed a big MMO or WoW Insider story last week, you've come to the right post.If you ever wanted to see what a geek supernova looks like, you only had to pay attention to the internet as Disney announced this week that it purchased LucasArts and is making several new Star Wars films. Of course, MMO gamers are certainly wondering how this might impact the several Star Wars-themed properties we enjoy (or have enjoyed). Will this added focus on the Star Wars franchise be the shot in the arm that SWTOR needs on the verge of free-to-play? The rest of the week's top MMO stories are beyond the cut. EVE Evolved: Merging EVE with DUST 514 Posted: 04 Nov 2012 03:00 PM PST Filed under: Betas, Sci-fi, Video, EVE Online, Culture, Game mechanics, Launches, MMO industry, New titles, PvP, Opinion, Free-to-play, MMOFPS, EVE Evolved, DUST 514, Sandbox When console MMOFPS DUST 514 was first announced, players were cautious of the game's ambitious goals. Developers promised that DUST battles would decide the ownership of planets inside PC MMO EVE Online, and that this would tie into system sovereignty and ultimately ownership of entire regions of space. We expected the two games to have separate communities and economies that would interact only when EVE players hired DUST mercenaries to take over sectors of particular planets, but we couldn't have been more wrong. Two years later, CCP blew our expectations out of the water with details of how DUST and EVE will be practically joined at the hip. We learned that the two games would share the exact same corporations and that ISK would be transferable between games. We also got a glimpse of the incredible plans for realtime integration, with EVE ships able to deliver air strikes to planets and DUST players able to shoot down ships in orbit with ground cannon. But have those ambitious goals stayed in focus during development, and what can we expect from DUST when it launches early next year? In this week's EVE Evolved opinion piece, I look through the public information on DUST 514's launch integration with EVE Online and speculate on how the link may evolve after release. Guild Wars 2 reserved names to be released on Nov 8th Posted: 04 Nov 2012 11:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Guild Wars, Events, in-game, News items, Guild Wars 2 Way, way back in time, when Guild Wars 2 first launched, character names in the original Guild Wars were reserved for those who had linked their accounts. Originally, the intent was that those names would be reserved for the headstart weekend and launch day, then released so that if someone had been sitting on Legolas Greenleaf but didn't claim it, that coveted name could be put to use. In response to a veritable flood of account issues and support tickets, however, ArenaNet postponed the release of those names -- until now. Well, not precisely now, but November 8th. Previously reserved names will be put up for grabs on the 8th at 5:00 p.m. EST. That means if you've been putting off getting one of your own reserved names onto a new character, mark your calendars! Rise and Shiny revisit: Asheron's Call Posted: 04 Nov 2012 09:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Video, Asheron's Call, Game mechanics, Opinion, Rise and Shiny, Livestream, Sandbox, Dungeons, Anniversary Another week of this column makes me amazed at how yet another older title, this time Asheron's Call, got so much right and yet remains so under-appreciated. A lot of this dismissal of past MMOs comes from the simple fact that humans do not enjoy something they have seen before, at least not the same as they enjoyed it when they first found it. In other words, we loved games like Asheron's Call, but they have fallen out of favor because we have moved on to bigger, newer, shinier things. After all, most of us don't sit around a fire and swap stories for entertainment anymore; we watch television. Although, damn, a fire sounds nice doesn't it?The warm feeling that I might feel from an evening swapping tales in front of the hearth is the same one I get from older titles like Asheron's Call. These elder titles have a charm built in, thanks to dated graphics that remind us of younger years and times of discovery. But there's something else going on here. These older games, games like Asheron's Call, are still really good.
