Wings over Atreia Twelve things to be thankful for in Aion
I can't really help it. I was trying to pen an article or a guide about any of a number of features in Aion, but my mind kept wandering back to the spirit of Thanksgiving. This time of the year I just get to feeling so extra thankful for those things that make life better, easier, and more enjoyable. So instead of fighting it, I decided to go with the flow and just share some of the top things I am grateful for in Aion.

As luck would have it, once I started this top 10 list, I kept thinking of more things, as you no doubt noticed by the title! I am sure I could keep adding, but the article had to stop at some point, so I ended my list at 12. Take a look at what made the cut and see if anything from your own list made it on mine.

Captain's Log: Star Trek Online's Season Seven shakedown

It's been a week since Star Trek Online launched Season Seven, and some of the mechanics revolving around the new Reputation systems are beginning to unfold. The day Season Seven was released, many players were caught off-guard by the fact that a dilithium reward was missing from the Strategic Task Force missions. These missions became affiliated with the new Task Force Omega Reputation system with the patch. The outcry was so immense and so loud that within 30 hours of the patch, Star Trek Online's Executive Producer, Daniel Stahl, updated the game's blog to reflect that a dilithium reward (albeit a reduced one) would be added back to the STF missions.

Since then, quite a few players, including me, have had the opportunity to give the Romulan reputation system a try, and we've seen some highly unanticipated results. Join me past the jump as I discuss the Season Seven shakedown.

Final Fantasy XIV shuns F2P to 'regain the trust of our players'

Final Fantasy XIV shuns F2P to 'regain the trust of our players'
So Final Fantasy XIV has temporarily gone dark while Square works its revamp magic. What will it look like when the servers come back? That's hard to say right now, but one thing we can tell you is that the company won't be jumping on the free-to-play bandwagon right away. Producer Naoki Yoshida recently told VG247 that sticking with a subscription model is all about honoring past commitments.

"One of the promises we originally stated was that we would release the game with a subscription model," Yoshida explained. "Players will be able to play it 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days in the year if they paid a subscription fee. So to regain the trust of our players we must of course fulfill this promise. Right now we believe that to be more important than any kind of business decision."

He went on to say F2P isn't necessarily the way forward for every game. "Depending on what kind of game you have -- it's hard to say which model is better. Is free-to-play better? Are subscriptions better? It just really depends, and it's hard to say which one is better."

Flameseeker Chronicles: Guild Wars 2's Lost Shores recap

      NO REALLY THO SHUT UP
I won't be the first one to point this out, but almost as annoying as his eagerness to tell the citizens of Tyria about his new tourist destination (he was so eager that he actually interrupted himself -- constantly) was Subdirector Blingg's use of the phrase "most unique."

No idea what I'm talking about? Then you likely didn't get a lot of hands-on time with Guild Wars 2 over the weekend. While Southsun Cove and the Fractals of the Mists are still around for your enjoyment, you missed out on the Lost Shores event itself.

Some people will dispute whether or not you actually "missed out." They'd argue, I suppose, that there wasn't a ton of missing out to do. We differ on that point. Anyway, jump below the cut to catch the skinny on this weekend in in Guild Wars 2: the good, the unfortunate, and the maddening.

The Stream Team Giving thanks edition, November 1925, 2012
Thankfulness. We all know that it isn't just for one day a year, but that doesn't diminish the significance of the holiday! Not to mention, it's a day off to game all we want while indulging in great food! So let's take a break from our busy lives and really reflect on all those reasons we have to be thankful: sandboxes, focus on emergent gaming, more sandboxes, livestreaming... did I mention more sandboxes?

Honestly, I am more thankful for family, friends, and a totally awesome job, but I am not ashamed to admit that I am also grateful for this pastime of ours, the community it has introduced me to, and the close relationships I have built because of it. I am thankful for a variety of games to fit many individual tastes, a surge of indie developers willing to push the envelope and try new things, the increasingly amazing graphics, and the chance to livestream it all for you on Massively TV!

Yes, folks -- I am grateful for the The Stream Team and all the amusing antics that happen live, right before your very eyes. And this week has plenty of shenanigans on the schedule, including two games in beta, so be sure to tune in! In between the live versions, you can take a peek at past streams. And feel free to share what you are thankful for in the comments past the break as well as cast your vote for the best holiday food.

The Daily Grind: What one thing would you change about your favorite MMO?

The Daily Grind - What one thing would you change about your favorite MMO?
I returned to DC Universe Online a couple of weeks ago, and the game is hitting most of my MMORPG sweet spots. There's a huge world, lots of stuff to do, and even a few non-combat bells and whistles (with more on the way).

There's one thing that sticks in my craw, though, and that's the game's sub-standard quest journal. It's functional, but it lacks the ability to show completed quests. It also doesn't allow for quests to be deleted, and both of these omissions play havoc with my OCD. What about you, Massively readers? Is there one particular gotcha in your favorite game that you'd change if you could?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

EVE Evolved: How would you build a sandbox?

            EVE Evolved title image
Themepark MMOs and single-player games have long dominated the gaming landscape, a trend that currently seems to be giving way to a resurgence of sandbox titles. Though games like Fallout and the Elder Scrolls series have always championed sandbox gameplay, very few publishers seem willing to throw their weight behind open-world sci-fi games. Space simulator Elite was arguably the first open-world game in 1984, and EVE Online is currently closing in on a decade of runaway success, yet the gaming public's obsession with space exploration has remained relatively unsatisfied for years.

Crowdsourced funding now allows gamers to cut the publishers out of the picture and fund game development directly. Space sandbox game Star Citizen is due to close up its crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter tomorrow night, adding over $1.6 million US to its privately crowdfunded $2.7 million. The creator of Elite has also launched his own campaign to fund a sequel, and even the practically vapourware sandbox MMO Infinity has announced plans to launch a campaign. While not all of these games will be MMOs, it may not be long before EVE Online has some serious competition. EVE can't really change much of its fundamental gameplay, but these new games are being built from scratch and can change all the rules. If you were making a new sandbox MMO from the ground up and could change anything at all, what would you do?

In this week's EVE Evolved, I consider how I'd build a sandbox MMO from the ground up, what I'd take from EVE Online, and what I would change.

At the end of every week, we round up the best and most popular news stories, exclusive features, and insightful columns published on Massively and then present them all in one convenient place. If you missed a big MMO or WoW Insider story last week, you've come to the right post.

If you thought the Western AAA MMORPG was dead, think again. Last week, many of the biggest MMO studios launched expansions and content updates to compete for your Thanksgiving-weekend time and cash. Guild Wars 2, Star Wars: The Old Republic, RIFT, The Secret World, Star Trek Online, and even a few older games like EverQuest II and Vanguard dished out some yummy post-launch dessert. And don't forget about PlanetSide 2, which is prepping for its Tuesday release, and Star Citizen, whose crowdfunding period ends tonight.

It's all behind the break in this special edition of Massively's weekly MMO roundup.
