Funcom overhauling Fusang PvP in The Secret World's Issue #4 update Posted: 12 Nov 2012 08:30 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Horror, Game mechanics, MMO industry, PvP, News items, The Secret World The days of zerging Fusang missions for AP, SP, and black marks are numbered, according to Funcom's latest dev blog. The Secret World's senior PvP designer explains some significant changes heading our way in the game's Issue #4: Big Trouble in the Big Apple update."[The] new reward scheme incentivizes conflict a lot more, since now you have to actually hold on to your objectives in order to gain rewards," writes Rasmus "Bjorndal" Harr. "This also means that zerging is discouraged, since you ideally need to have players spread out in several groups to be able to quickly react to events." Players will no longer receive black marks for completing Fusang PvP missions, and Funcom is also adding PvP vendors to the zone that sell upgrades for the turrets and custodians that guard each facility. Furthermore, the devs are implementing an underdog mission to assist undermanned factions as well as cross-dimensional Fusang battlegroups. That's not all, either, as Harr has plenty to say about matchmaking and currency changes. Read all about it at the official TSW website. The Stream Team: RUSH edition, November 12 - 18, 2012 Posted: 12 Nov 2012 07:00 AM PST Filed under: Polls, Massively Meta, Livestream, Miscellaneous, The Stream Team I can't help it... I have Rush on the brain. Not even Sandy and her airport-closing ways could detour me from heading out to see what is possibly the greatest musical trio of all time (I say possibly because I didn't personally hear what was going on back during Aristotle's time!). Anyone who knows me knows I live, breathe, and think music. And that is great music. It didn't matter that my extremities went numb from the cold; it was worth every minute. The energy, the interaction -- nothing can beat that! It's kind of like Massively TV! Of course the show itself is great, but being there live to watch the antics of The Stream Team and be a part of the audience interaction can't be matched. So to make sure you don't miss any shows, here's the schedule for this week. And to fill that time in between performances, there is also a handy guide for the previous week! Weigh in with your opinion about what music you prefer and what you'd add to games. The Daily Grind: Will you be playing SWTOR for free? Posted: 12 Nov 2012 05:00 AM PST Filed under: Sci-fi, MMO industry, Opinion, Free-to-play, The Daily Grind, Star Wars: The Old Republic So Star Wars: The Old Republic's free-to-play conversion is almost upon us. What about you, Massively readers? Will you be playing SWTOR for free? MMO Week in Review: History repeatin' Posted: 11 Nov 2012 05:00 PM PST Filed under: Massively Meta, Week in Review, Miscellaneous At the end of every week, we round up the best and most popular news stories, exclusive features, and insightful columns published on Massively and then present them all in one convenient place. If you missed a big MMO or WoW Insider story last week, you've come to the right post.November 15th is an inauspicious day for Star Wars MMO fans. Veteran gamers will remember it as the day SOE launched Star Wars Galaxies' infamous New Game Enhancements, better known as the NGE, which inserted themepark elements into the beloved sandbox and caused an exodus of players. Seven years later to the day, Star Wars: The Old Republic will undergo its own enhancements in the form of a massive free-to-play conversion and 1.5 update that hope to reinvigorate the shrinking playerbase and repair trust in the development team, which just split up with Mythic. I'm going to resist the obvious Han Solo "good luck" quote and instead point you toward the rest of this week's top MMO stories, tucked handily behind the break. EVE Evolved: History of the Interstellar Starbase Syndicate Posted: 11 Nov 2012 03:00 PM PST Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Culture, Events, in-game, Game mechanics, Guilds, Lore, PvP, EVE Evolved, Sandbox Today's EVE Online is packed to the brim with warring alliances smashing each other's property to pieces, but it wasn't always like that. In EVE's early days, there were so few players that much of nullsec was wasteland and you could often go 40 jumps across the lawless regions without seeing a single soul. Conquerable stations were added for players to fight over in 2003's Castor expansion, but they were few and far between. It wasn't until player-owned structures were first introduced with Exodus that nullsec really started out on its path to full-scale colonisation and all-out war.The first player-owned structures introduced were Starbases, which offered not only a place to stash your loot and ships but also a whole new industry based on reacting moon minerals together. Moon minerals have been a major point of contention in nullsec balance discussions over the years, but most alliances weren't all that interested in moons when the industry first appeared. Starbases took all day to set up, refueling and emptying them required constant hauling, and just scanning all the moons in a region for minerals was a massive undertaking. In the summer of 2005, player Count TaSessine saw this problem as an opportunity and grabbed it with both hands as he formed the Interstellar Starbase Syndicate. In this week's EVE Evolved, I look back at the history of one of EVE's early alliances, its creator's dream for a civilian nullsec, and the changes that eventually led to the alliance's destruction. The end comes to Final Fantasy XIV Posted: 11 Nov 2012 01:00 PM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Trailers, Video, Events, in-game, Lore, News items, Consoles, Final Fantasy XIV As of 1:00 a.m. EST today, the Final Fantasy XIV servers started the game's final event before the relaunch. At 3:00 a.m. EST, they shut down. Immediately following the shutdown, the last trailer for the game's current version was posted, showing the outcome of the final battle against the forces of the Garlean Empire by the unified Grand Companies of Eorzea. And if you've been following the game's story in any fashion, you'll probably want to see how it all ends. It's worth noting that the cutscene is both fairly long and lacking in context -- if you don't know the most recent lore of the game, you're not going to catch everything that's going on. But if you've been watching the final defense of the Eorzean city-states from inside the game or on the sidelines, you deserve a front-row seat for the last clash of armies. And even though you know how it ends, it's still going to pack a punch. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in!] Continue reading The end comes to Final Fantasy XIV The end comes to Final Fantasy XIV originally appeared on Massively on Sun, 11 Nov 2012 16:00:00 EST.
