Rise and Shiny: Runes of Magic Posted: 11 Nov 2012 09:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Video, Culture, Game mechanics, Opinion, Free-to-play, Casual, Humor, Runes of Magic, Rise and Shiny, Livestream I first played Runes of Magic a long time ago, as in years. In fact, I played it a bit during beta and right after release. I have a fond memory of being on a voice program with our very own Shawn Schuster and a few other podcasters and bloggers as we ran around playing. I named my character something to do with Slayer, or perhaps that was Shawn, and we had a pretty good time. It was, at the time, one of the higher-quality free-to-play titles out there.Since then the game has undergone many, many changes -- too many changes to recap here. If you really want a summary of the game over the past few years, check out our own Jeremy Stratton's former column, Lost Pages of Taborea. I had Jeremy join me for my last night of gameplay before writing this piece to help clear up some confusion I had about the game. And for some powerelveling. Oh yes, powerleveling. The Daily Grind: Which dungeon is the most replayable? Posted: 11 Nov 2012 05:00 AM PST Filed under: Culture, Opinion, The Daily Grind, Miscellaneous, Dungeons If MMO features were furniture, then dungeons would be the family couch that shows an immense amount of wear and tear from all of the butts that have traversed its terrain over the years. Perhaps it's not as beautiful and exciting as it was the day you brought it home from the store, but there's something to be said for familiarity and comfort as well. Some dungeons get more wear than others, and usually this is due to one of two factors: better rewards or a more enjoyable experience. A great dungeon has impeccable design, a smooth flow, and memorable moments that make players continue to want to come back for more. So if you had to pick a dungeon that's the most replayable or the instance that you wouldn't mind running again and again, which would it be? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! The Mog Log: It's the end of Eorzea as we know it Posted: 10 Nov 2012 01:00 PM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Events, in-game, Lore, Endgame, Opinion, Consoles, Final Fantasy XIV, The Mog Log It's not really a Final Fantasy game without a good apocalypse, and Final Fantasy XIV is getting just that. We've been watching the slow roll of the end of the world for months now, and as the last few days tick down before the shutdown, it's becoming amply clear just how bad the world is going to get. Everything will burn, everything will fall, and it's down to the last few defenders to fight for the ashes of Eorzea. And, well, it'll all get put back a couple of days later. But that's not the point. While the game has been flirting with the apocalyptic prophecies circling around the Seventh Umbral Era since launch, the announcement of A Realm Reborn and subsequent changes set the stage, and since then the game has quite happily pushed the idea that the end is nigh. Speaking as someone who was quite disappointed when similar changes just skipped from "everything's fine" to "after the end" in other games, I was curious to see what Final Fantasy XIV's implementation would look like. And while it's not quite over, I've seen enough to call it -- not perfectly, but very close. Some Assembly Required: Player-generated content at SOE Live Posted: 10 Nov 2012 11:00 AM PST Filed under: EverQuest, EverQuest II, Events, real-world, Game mechanics, Vanguard, Free-to-play, Roleplaying, Free Realms, Massively Event Coverage, DC Universe Online, EverQuest Next, Some Assembly Required, PlanetSide 2, Sandbox, Housing By now, everyone has made it home from SOE Live... yes, even that one fellow who kept disappearing, seduced by the one-armed bandit. As my first foray into the annual self-described "family reunion," I wasn't sure what to expect. I'd hoped there would be some news to pass along. If nothing else, a tidbit or two about any title -- be it EverQuest II, PlanetSide 2, or DC universe Online -- would justify my trip out there to me. But what I got wasn't just some news; it was great news!Although the lights of Vegas are fading from memory, the hope for player-generated content burns brighter than before. From keynote addresses to panels to interviews, Sony Online Entertainment's focus on emergent game play and various sandbox features showed a dedication to gaming beyond just the hack-and-slash treadmill grind. Can we hear a hallelujah? With so much news coming out of the convention, there wasn't time or space to do much more than just report on the facts. Here, I have the opportunity to sum things up and even add my own impressions of the event! I might even toss in an anecdote or two to illustrate what made this such an incredible experience that I am hooked and will return each year.
